I've recently gone back to Fireteam Elite after watching Romulus and the game really doesn't get enough praise. Just putting all the Alien licence aside, it's a fantastic co-op shooter with a wide range of classes, weapons and builds. I was very happy to hear about a potential sequel. But then as you said, it's brimming with Alien lore nestled into every corner. You can tell the devs were really passionate about including as many little bits of info in there as possible. I hope the sequel really expands upon that stuff.
I do generally like Fire Team, but I was also disapointed by what I see as a lack of polish. Some descisions like the absence of a good lobby system (take a look at the - sadly serving a life sentence in developement hell - game Heliborn for what I mean with a good, simple lobby system and that was done with a 4 man dev team) just boggled my mind and imo really hurt the game.
Dark Descent is great as a prequel to Fireteam because the ending of DD leaves enough survivors to imply that they reported back to the Colonial Marines' chain of command, and so between that intel and the Xenotechs you collect, that's why in Fireteam the Marines are able to fight the Xenos on something resembling equal footing. And that's cathartic as heck to see.
I'm gonna have to get back on Dark Descent. I spent a couple of hours of play time on that and it's actually pretty good! Just haven't had the time to get back on it.
This is the same reason I like the Star Wars Battlefront games so much. Games give an opportunity to unite all parts of a franchise which ultimately brings the fanbase together rather than apart because even the worst entries in our favorite franchises have something to love
Alien: Isolation, the only game that made as terrified as I was as a kid who watched the commercials for 'Alien' when it came out in 1979, and then later showed up on HBO. For me, i'd never liked the over-explanation Scott did with Prometheus/Covenant. I loved the Space Jockey being an actual Alien, not some 10ft tall pasty white humanoid with a helmet.
Personally didn't particulary like Isolation's gameplay. Never got far in it. I prefer the aproach Dark Descent took to stealth: "You can get loud and just shoot the bugs, but there's a price to be payed." As to the overexplanation, yeah, that's unfortunately a thing. It seems many people calling the shots in media were never able to wrap their heads around the - frankly rather simple - concept of "if you explain a mistery, it is no longer a mistery"...
@@Bird_Dog00 That aproach to stealth you described is almost 1:1 with the one in Isolation. And no being scared and/or frustrated that you can't kill the alien doesn't count as criticism, get gud and deal with him.

If you like the cannon-welding that Fireteam Elite does, I also highly recommend Alien: The Roleplaying Game by Free League Publishing. It does a lot to try and harmonize more than forty years worth of lore, while extrapolating a lot of it to create a universe that feels fleshed out and cohesive.
IMO, Fireteam Elite is very underrated. It doesn't have content for 100s of hours, but for a quick coop shooter to go through the story and maybe get some cool equipment in the horde mode afterwards - hell yeah! Especially with mods.
Some of my closest friends nowadays have come from AFE, and we still play more recent games like Helldivers and Starship Troopers: Extermination now that the game has gone into dormancy until the next released title or update. It truly is the Aliens game we needed, if not also the one we deserved.
Fireteam Elite is a great game, especially if you have a consistent group to play with. The story itself was pretty good and had a couple of good points where it surprised us. It would have actually made a great movie expanding the lore of both the purpose of the canisters and how evil AI can seem to be. We still play it occasionally after 200 hours.

Games are ideal as a convergence point for any established franchise. You showed Roughnecks as an example of the Starship Troopers franchise being expanded on and while the show is truly one of the best SST related media since the '97 movie it's actually the 2000 strategy games Terran Ascendancy that flawlessly blends the movie and novel into a distinct and consistent universe. You can even see some visual and conceptual inspiration taken from Aliens. The game went out of its way to show what the Bugs eat, how they reproduce, it gave us zombie troopers, hybrids, a building sized Queen etc. It's really a shame that the game is largely forgotten... It was a rare example of a self contained sequel to an established franchise that managed to combine and expand upon previous ideas while also delivering an actual resolution to the story.

@brianreddeman951 I agree, a little jarring, but I was here for most of it. About to re-download Alien Isolation so I can scream "GAME OVER, MAN" everytime Sheldon claps my buns. (It's my name for that game's xenomorph)
The William Gibson script for Alien 3(?) that was turned into a book was really nice. So too other books that explore the non-xenomorph side of the universe.
The Alien (TT)RPG is great in this regard too -- and in general. It's written by Andrew Gaska who writes Alien sci-fi novels, and he was tasked with writing the lore bible for the movie studio. So he seems to know what he is talking about and made a coherent mythos for the RPG, from all the rather scattered lore from the movies.
I was surprised with how much I'd end up loving Aliens Fireteam Elite. Also Hyperdyne always, most reliable weapons! I hate Prometheus so much for what it did to the franchise, but I do enjoy the Prometheus stuff stages. My problem is that, the "Fiefeld-morph" is too weak compared to how it was in the movie. In the movie, it was suppose to be some sort of morph-variation even looking much more Xenomorphy originally, and it is terrifying how strong it is. In the game, it just punches hard but goes down so easily. Once I'm done with A:FE, I'll jump into Dark Descent. PS. But never forget.. Inside Aliens Fireteam Elite lurks the original of Colonial Marines. Yuck! PPS. A:FE gives me the Space Station 13: Colonial Marines server feel too which I adore. Goddamn SS13 is amazing.
Fireteam Elite and Dark Descent are both so bloody good! the devs of both clearly know their deep lore (references to the Tech Manual for Fireteam and the Dark Horse comics in Dark Descent, Xeno-Zip!). I really hope we get sequels to both!
You can say the same thing about Fallout for Fallout 4 wasn't the best entry into the Fallout franchise. But that all changed when the Fallout TV Show came out and people where rushing to play it again or for the first time.
Oh my, yes, I watched Aliens first, but I was far too young. At 10 years old, this movie made me afraid of everything... including a xenomorph bursting out of me. 😄 Today, I just laugh at movie violence... there's enough "real" violence today to scare me. 😀 Wait, that's not funny... Now, aliens is my favorite action movie. I even bought the 4 set DVD (the original to Resurrection). I even liked Prometheus and Covenant. I'm in my 40s now. If these movies bother me, I really do have problems. 😄
I don't much care for the lore of Alien but I beyond love Fireteam Elite to death. I just wish there was more content. It would absolutely be a successful live service.
Damn i love this game. At first i was like "Ahh, a new alien shooter, neat, but whatever"... But gradually i grew more and more fond of it. It just feels so good to blast xenos in this game.
I still want a Colonial Marines take on Alien Isolation. You know, what Aliens Colonial Marines was supposed to be. The option to play first person without hud, fully functional weapons ammo counters, drop in/out co-op borderlands style... I guess, I'm still a little salty about how the promises made for Aliens Colonial Marines 18 years ago never came to fruition.
I’ve still got AFT: E installed and love to jump in for a run of Marines taking on Xenomorphs. Love this game and not sure why it didn’t get much hype.
Fire team elite was fun, the campaign was just so short. They should make almost a procedurally generated maps with objectives, that’s what I would like.
My usual move in alien's games is to lock myself in a closet and wait in fear of the xenomorph... for hours until I find the courage to advance through the level. Finally to move forward especially to the next cupboard in which to hide for the next hours ... I am far too receptive to the atmosphere of these games, it is psychological torture to play them. This is proof of their success. The worst was AvP 1, I finished the first level, I didn't even try the 2nd because I was so psychotic anticipating the xenomorph attacks... my friends laugh at me when we play one of these games 😅
Fire team elite was a great game don't get me wrong the Prometheus stuff I still feel should have been left alone as a bad idea, but for the game worked and I only ever played it alone. Dark descent as well was great could definitely do with a dlc, a few more weapons and enemies but I had no regrets completing it 3 times!
So...if anyone who has seen Alien Romulus, look for the Alien:Isolation save points in the film. The movie that tied the Alien films and one excellent Alien game together.
Alien Isolation 2 = You can now kill the alien, it takes management of your inventory and heavy expenditure to do it, but there are options to fight through the experience while still retaining the original horror survival experience. Additionally, add story choice based around synthetics in a ship or space station, a psychological thriller aspect to layer on top of the game culminating in fighting a once friendly synth team mate to some degree. Boom, Aliens: Isolation?
One of the best Aliens games. It was fun and I always went back to it. But they wanted some of that live service pie… and Fireteam Elite got left behind.
AFE was/is awesome. Though only gripes i have was that the playing solo with 2 android companions they are simple gunners and don't have the greatest AI , it would of been better if u could have some sort of interface to enable the use of other classes and set up specific actions. (think of your teammates in the mass effect series.) 2) have the aliens attack randomly rather than specific spawn points as when u know tthe game well enough you know when and how they are going to attack. 3) Make the motion tracker useful and more like the one in the movie rather then a boring white/grey color and have 1 member of the team actually pulling it out to see large numbers incoming. Great game overall . justt wish there was a bit more intereesting.suspensful moments.
I actually thought this is about Colonial Marines. Really says something when seeing that the game is lower-tier canon in the current roleplaying game. With that in mind, really hope Prometheus and Alien: Covenant gets decanonized, while Alien: Engineers gets recanonized.
Alien isolation should be called alien bad logistics. The whole game can be summarized like this: you need to go from A to B but the straight line is blocked, you need to go back to C or D to find a path to B, contrivances will try to oppose you and impede your progress, rinse and repeat until you get about 12hrs of game play. That game would have been great at just 6 to 8 hrs long.
I didn't know there were other crossovers besides AVP. Now I wonder what a Stargate-Alien crossover could be like. Might make humies want to work with the Replicators again.
Is "Fireteam Elite" in solo any good? Do you need to be online? How is your AI squad holding up? I don't think this would be my kinda game, but it's still interesting.
If Fireteam Elite ever gers a sequel, I'd like there to be a toggle between 3rd abd first person. I want to experience what Colonial Marines should've been
one thing i don't like much about fireteam is the difficulty changes. Rather than MORE enemies.. which i'd like.. they nerf the weapons, so on harder levels you have less ammo and weapons like the smart gun are just unhelpful. It does make you think more tactfully and is best with friends- however i feel like they could've been a playmode and harder could've introduced a larger wave, as dealing with more aliens is fun! I'm not a huge fan that the special aliens have so much more health, i feel like they should just have more of those also, unloading 3 clips into a drone feels bad, and well aimed shots from rifles should be a 1-2 hit kill, they could just stand to be a little more sneaky like the prowlers those bastards always get somebody!
The horror elements are so strong that I always kind of forget the Alien IP is a well thought out hard sci-fi universe. Hard to appreciate the horror of late stage capitalism in space when my heartbeat is pounding like a college drum line.
I've recently gone back to Fireteam Elite after watching Romulus and the game really doesn't get enough praise. @brianreddeman951 I agree, a little jarring, but I was here for most of it. About to re-download Alien Isolation so I can scream "GAME OVER, MAN" everytime Sheldon claps my buns. (It's my name for that game's xenomorph)
Games and media made by passionate, knowledgeable fans tend to have a better storyline and more tie in.
Alien came out in the 70s?!
Finally recognition for my beloved time killer
The William Gibson script for Alien 3(?) that was turned into a book was really nice. So too other books that explore the non-xenomorph side of the universe.
The Alien (TT)RPG is great in this regard too -- and in general. It's written by Andrew Gaska who writes Alien sci-fi novels, and he was tasked with writing the lore bible for the movie studio. So he seems to know what he is talking about and made a coherent mythos for the RPG, from all the rather scattered lore from the movies.
I was shocked to hear there's maybe a new AFE coming. Where did you hear/read this?
There was a fake leak
"Alien earth" we getting the fucking earth war bro's
This game is awesome! :) They really fused everything in this game!
Oh my, yes, I watched Aliens first, but I was far too young.
At 10 years old, this movie made me afraid of everything... including a xenomorph bursting out of me. 😄 Today, I just laugh at movie violence... there's enough "real" violence today to scare me. 😀
Wait, that's not funny...
Fireteam Elite is a lot of fun. Very tense and great multiplayer.
0:35 Gundam Zeta. Damn, what a way to die.
The best xenomorph variants were in the Kenner toyline and the AVP Capcom arcade game.
That's pretty neat. Thank you.
Alien Isolation and Aliens Fireteam Elite are two of the best games for the franchise.
2010 Aliens vs Predator is the game for me, my favorite of the ones based on those franchises.
Best Alien game is Alien vs Predator (2010) it has a voiced campaign for all 3 factions and the asymmetric multiplayer was an absolute blast.
CM 13 or 14 is the best aliens game, a space station 13 or 14 server that's modded to be the best aliens experience
I thought this video was going to be about AVP Extinction. Still Fireteam Elite looks interesting and i'm happy to get a good recomendation.
Fireteam is a great game!
you're forgetting the most in-depth game of them all.
Space Station 13 Colonial Marines lmfao
I wish they'd hurry up and work the predators into this new refined canon so we can get a proper Aliens vs Predator movie already.
4:06 I'll drink to that!
Alien vs predator on thr Atari Jaguar was awesome.
AFE was/is awesome. Though only gripes i have was that the playing solo with 2 android companions they are simple gunners and don't have the greatest AI , it would of been better if u could have some sort of interface to enable the use of other classes and set up specific actions. (think of your teammates in the mass effect series.)
2) have the aliens attack randomly rather than specific spawn points as when u know tthe game well enough you know when and how they are going to attack.
3) Make the motion tracker useful and more like the one in the movie rather then a boring white/grey color and have 1 member of the team actually pulling it out to see large numbers incoming.
Great game overall . justt wish there was a bit more intereesting.suspensful moments.
You can thank Gearbox. They messed up so BAD everybody else stepped up😂🤣🤣🤣.
Man, didn't expect to see Appleseed here.
Need to find a couple people to role with in Fireteam but now we've got SPACE MARINE 2 coming out.
Nooooo WE WANT ALIEN ISOLATION 2 dammit!!!!!!!😊
Oh man i thought this was going to be Colonial Marines
Awesome
Is "Fireteam Elite" in solo any good?
Do you need to be online?
How is your AI squad holding up?
I don't think this would be my kinda game, but it's still interesting.
If Fireteam Elite ever gers a sequel, I'd like there to be a toggle between 3rd abd first person. I want to experience what Colonial Marines should've been
Wil you do a video on the space station “Romulus & Remus”? I thinks it’s two different ships into one…
Nice.
Alien Isolation was it for me.
one thing i don't like much about fireteam is the difficulty changes.
A joker xeno hybrid would just be an alien
I need to replay fireteam elite someday.
Considering buying fire team elite. I used to play it on game pass but it isnt on game oass anymore
The horror elements are so strong that I always kind of forget the Alien IP is a well thought out hard sci-fi universe. Hard to appreciate the horror of late stage capitalism in space when my heartbeat is pounding like a college drum line.
How the hell have I literally never heard of this game
Starship Troopers: Terran Command does something similar for the SST franchise, though not to this extent
