  • I was surprisingly bumped to Advanced on 3/31/24 and sadly lost all my footage that day as my X3 blew off my bike never to be seen or heard from again (RIP). This is my first day and first session riding with these absolutely insane riders. This was also a special weekend in particular as there were a bunch of MotoAmerica riders practicing for the upcoming races in mid May. Suffice it to say, I was wayyy out of my league. Still fun af though!

    I just turned 54 - me and a friend started racing a couple of years ago. We both didn't get any faster until we moved up to A-group. I learned more about corner speed and race craft on a Ninja 400 than I ever did on a 600/750/1000. My friend is now racing MotoAmerica at 53! Look for him in the 600 Supersport class at Laguna Seca. @@ssaafur As I got older with injuries (4 back surgeries in 5 years!) I was getting physically and mentally exhausted on the bigger bikes - so I went down to a Ninja 400 and racing became fun again where I could go an entire session or race at 95 to 100%. Plus, racing is expensive and the 400 is way more cost effective. Can go a race weekend on 1 set of tires and then a track day or two! I did probably 10 - 12 track days then felt comfortable to race novice class and came in 2nd in the 450 Superbike, 450 Superstock and light weight twins championship with AFM in Northern California. Now for 2024 I have to race in the expert class which will help me improve my lap times. There's guys in the expert class that do a 1:59 at Thunderhill Raceway on a Ninja 400 😮. I'm at 2:08's for reference so I have a ways to go. If you decide to race - most clubs have a new racer program where someone can walk you thru the process on your first race weekend. Good luck!

      I do track days at Thunderhill on my Ducatis. 1299 and V4S. I feel like I'm a lot slower because I don't want to yard sale my $35k bike. Rode my buddies CBR 600 for 2 heats and it felt like I was just too big for it. I'm 6-215 and anything under a liter seems too small. But I'm also really tired of tossing around those big bikes and the maintenance costs. I have a Huracan and it costs less to run than those two Ducatis.

    Great video and sound! Get to 3rd gear before you enter the chicane then get 2nd before you jump the rumble strip into the corkscrew. Get to 3rd gear before entering the second S turn and carry 3rd all the way to the last 2 switch backs. Depending on your speed you could carry 3rd all the way through or drop to 2nd before you make the sharp righ/left. You'll have better drive coming out in both scenarios and gain several seconds. Once upon a time not too many years ago I held an AMA Pro race Supersport license and won a lot of WERA regional races during that time. Before I got to that level I was humbled in the same way. One weekend early in my riding career I was bumped to Advanced at a Roebling Road trackday and couldn't believe how much faster the white background numbers were than me. Passing me out the outside of the last turn at Roebling at well over 100mph making me feel like I was standing still. It was demoralizing, but I kept pushing and within a couple years was running with them. Started with a two piece suit and everything.
    Reminisce about those days all the time - there really isn't a whole lot that can top the feeling of pushing a powerful motorcycle to the limits of traction on a circuit track.

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  2 місяці тому

      This is so rad. And even more so you got to that level of competition. It is extremely demoralizing when I'm pushing myself to what feels like the absolute limit when I have these dudes 30 years my senior just dancing around me without breaking a sweat. But keeping at it track day after track day, unlocking new secrets and raising personal limits I find I'm now staying about the midfield in advanced without pushing much when just 6 months ago I was struggling to maintain even an intermediate pace.

      It’s definitely in the maximum area depending on age. Doing lots of cardio exercise away from the track will bring it down. I started cycling 5 miles/day a few weeks before my season this year. I’m a month in now and its making a huge impact on how tired my legs get and my endurance is improving.

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  4 місяці тому +7

      For long periods of time, I don't imagine so xD I'm 33 so my max should be around 187 according to norms. After the session, I don't feel any pain or discomfort in my chest so as far as that goes, I'd say I'm alright. The heartrate will decrease almost instantly if I'm not pushing as hard or as soon as I pit, etc. I was very stressed this day as it was my first day in advanced, plus very used tires, plus motoamerica riders smokin me left and right haha I'm not surprised I almost hit 200 but I've heard some motorbike racers will hit this routinely during a race, especially if they're younger.

    Sir, if those are are Lee Parks Deerskin gloves, please consider getting something with sliders in the palms. I was fortunate enough that my only crash in a pair of Lee Parks Sumo R gloves came at Barber at Charlottes' web while I was moving at a slow rate of speed and it was a lowside. One of glove burst open but did keep me from getting skinned up.
    The bigger problem though is that that they "grip" the pavement rather than sliding. That sent me tumbling. In a more harsh crash, the lack of sliders would likely have caused my wrist to be torqued by the grip between the glove and the pavement, most likely leading to wrist damage.
    I learned my lesson and moved on to Alpinestars.
    I only spotted your glove in the very beginning of the video, so maybe I didn't identify the glove correctly.
    Best of success in your track adventures!

    You need to try use all of the road and put the bike upright faster while using that road to open up up your corner exits, you look very slow on corner exits, i think thats where you will find several seconds, use that road bro its there for a reason, also when you show the back camera you clearly see you contact patches at the apex are like a meter of the curb, try gettin closer to the inside before opening up the throtle, be safe and stay in advanced group, others will slow you down, advanced riders like a lil slower rider in theyre group, makes us help find passage points much better 😀

I will stay in advance for now, I like that it forces me to figure out what I'm doing wrong and improve. I would be happy with that first exposure. It's very interesting to compare this 600 and you ride to being in a "cage". In a way I would have thought your terminal V would have been higher on all of BMP short "straights". It did look like folks were "pinching" out of the kink T11 on the back straight. In the car I intend to be on the concrete about halfway down it's curbing. I would not be in a hurry to get over to the right into T12. I cheat it actually I stay more track center in the car as I approach that. Not that any of this may help a rider. My heavier car and 4 traction patches I can get to 1:40, when the slicks are optimal. I think I need a shorter diff, I am tallish for the motor. Almost to 100mph thru T10/11. Anyway looks like fun! • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! The bike telemetry such as tach, gear, throttle and speedo is with Dynojet's POD-300 that works with the PCV. Lean angle, gyro/accel, lap times, GPS/track map and true speed is captured with a Racebox Mini S. I also wear a heart monitor that works with Wahoo app on my phone. I have 3 different CSVs from those devices that I sync up and overlay using Telemetry Overlay and RaceRender. It's a long story but half the stuff was compatible with one and vice versa with other so I was forced to use both when first starting out. I've since worked with dev of Telemetry Overlay who added Dynojet support so technically I could put it all using that but I really like the custom gauge I made with RR (and the track map/position looks cooler too) so I just quickly import into my template, sync up data and export. The most time consuming part of my videos is reframing my 360 camera and doing the multi edit of my two cameras in Davinci Resolve.

    This stuff looks great, man! I have SO many questions about your HUD set up. I see what you have in the video description. I looked up the GoPro Telemetry Overlay and I see where it's using the camera's accelerometers. And I looked up RaceRender and I see how that's getting your GPS position on track (I think).
    Where is your heart rate coming from? It looks like RaceRender runs on your phone. And, your phone can track your heart rate. Are you running something like a smart watch, or are you running a chest censor?
    Going to dive through your videos. Hoping to see something on how you set up your HUD in the video feed! It's really impressive, man!
    Just a suggestion, if you have multiple camera angles, it may be useful to do a tiny picture in picture of the opposite camera. So, if you're showing the front ... have something somewhere that shows the rear view. You've already got the footage. A lot of car channels do separate footage for front, rear, feet, and dash. Your HUD footage is so detailed I don't think you need to worry about the dash. But, since you do already have front and rear facing cameras ... in my opinion, it would be nice to always be able to see both regardless of which is the main focus.
    Keep it up, man!

      @@wackolovesyou8203 It's definitely the nervousness and excitement. I mean it's physically exhausting to track a bike but for sure the adrenaline that's kicking in is what's making my HR skyrocket. My next time at Barber is on sunday and one of the things I'm gonna be working on is relaxing a bit and bringing the HR down. I think one major factor is I'm holding my breath in certain sections

    Follow their lines, you are trying to run the insides. That might work for blocking, not for the speed as you can see when they run away. They are running very far outside to enter the corners and using the whole track. It takes time. What is your age? From your max HR I am guessing in your 20's?

    • @alixvandurand

      I noticed that too, definitely need to rework how I run the whole track. I was also very sloppy because of lack of trust in the rubber. I wrecked in turn 7 last June so I'm still getting over that mental block and taking my time pushing my personal limitations. I'm recently turned 33, max HR is supposed to be 187 according to norms but I guess I'm not normal. I feel great after a session though, no discomfort, just like a did a heavy workout.

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  4 місяці тому +2

      I have an Arai Corsair X and there's a tiny crevasse between the pads at the sides of the visor and cheek area. I basically just have the small Go 3 (unmounted from the Pod) attached with the little magnetic stem mount and fit the stem into that crevasse. When I put the helmet on, it holds surprisingly well and I feel confident that during a wreck it won't come out.

    Is that heart rate monitor working well? A healthy person would not have almost 200 bpm doing a low intensity activity. If you are under 20 years old and have trained a lot of cardio, for example running marathons it maybe normal, If not, I would really go to a heart doctor.

      2008 CBR600RR, I baby it haha it has a cat delete full system, custom tune and front sprocket is -1 so it pulls like a 750. Barber is a slower track so I technically could go +2 on the rear but then it would be screaming too much on the freeways.

    • @Drewrides89

      Barber is definitely not a slower track, if you wanna run decent times then switch to 15/44,45 @alixvandurand

      @alixvandurand  3 місяці тому

      @@Drewrides89 stock gearing on 600RR is 16/42..so telling me to gear down to a 15/45 is a huge difference in acceleration (less top speed) and definitely shows barber is indeed a slower track. Pretty much every other track I've been to I've had to hit 6th with my current gearing. Barber, typically I don't go above 5th.

      @alixvandurand I've been riding that track for awhile man, most racers run 15/43 15/44 15/45 at barber but don't listen to me, just gave a suggestion, once you ride track long enough you will eventually understand gearing

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  3 місяці тому

      @@Drewrides89 What bikes are they riding cause 15/43-45 on a CBR600RR is definitely gearing for more acceleration/less top end. As I mentioned in my original comment, I'm running -1 on front (15T). I could go even further adding 1 or 2 on the rear but I'm really not trying to top out my bike at 135mph cause I still ride this on the street and I'd be hitting stupid revs just cruising down the highway. Besides, there's still a ton of other things I can improve on to get lap times down before needing to mess with my gearing further.

  • @ACEERZ
    @ACEERZ 3 місяці тому +1

    In the second corner, you are entering too slow, you decide to pick up gas earlie going more into lean angle while the circuit drops. your front looses alot of pressure because your earlie gas pick up. While forcing more speed and leanangle. Take care on that. Rest of this looks so far fine at your level. If your BPM is correct you have to slow down longer in the turns driving. Thats not like 80% driving - thats 110% lol 196 BPM. Keep Up. Good Grip

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  3 місяці тому

      You're talking turns 2 and 3 yes? You're saying to enter faster then maintain a little longer so I don't increase lean angle on the downhill coming out towards 4?

    • @ACEERZ
      @ACEERZ 3 місяці тому

      @@alixvandurand yea turn 2 and 3, if so get in faster, you can brake in later and you will be more safe while beeing faster. Because you are to slow you start acceleration earlie - front gets loose - and than you tighten the lane with a loose front beeing on the gas. Of course for you it feels easier and safer but if you think about forcing leanangle while going down with a more loose front, that makes no sense.
