I don't think I've seen Kiryu cry this hard when someone died. he was completely helpless, and could do nothing but watch as his friend slowly died. now, it takes a lot to make me genuinely cry out emotion rather than just something sad happening giving a bit of sadness, this made me bawl my eyes out in sorrow and anger. it was like I could feel Kiryu's emotional pain seeping through me.
A lot of their interactions involve kiryu trying to keep rikiya safe or out of harms way. So the one time he wasn't able to do either and instead be the cause of it. That guilt and that feeling of "I could have done better" or "I caused this" probably clouded his mind. Kiryu is a character that has been in heart ache after heart ache and it eats him up a lot. That's why we usually see him alone smoking a cigarette or in some bar drinking. He's a really reserved individual cause letting other people in would involve association with him. Something he doesn't want as enemies can take advantage of as the plot of 3,5, and 6 show. I think that feeling of him doing more is why he was much more emotional with the death's of rikiya and tachibana. Tachibana for a different reason but the same general point of "you didn't need to die for my sake" or "it shouldn't have been you, it would've been better if it was me" as we know he's a very self sacrificing person when it's needed. That said. Rikiya was still just a kid. Someone who was a friend to kiryu and his orphanage. And on top of that. Looked up to kiryu. That's why he made sure to quote kiryu asking if he was a real man before dying.

I think something snapped in Kiryu with Rikiya's death, I can't imagine the guilt and sorrow, as he was watching a young life slipping away through his fingers, meanwhile, he was still alive, the adult one, the responsible one - the more I play yakuza the sadder Kiryu makes me, as he has been through so much and now I want to cry once again
From what I heard, the voice actor of kiryu said this death affected him more than any other death and that yakuza 3 was his favourite yakuza game other than 0
@@sarajamroz4070 think the difference with Rikiya’s death and everyone before him is that they were all still involved with the yakuza. Reina, tachibana, Yumi, nishiki, and kazama. Ironically, despite actually being Yakuza himself, Rikiya was more like just some child civilian, despite also already being an adult. His life barely began compared to the rest of them. By this point, Kiryu was pretty much free of the yakuza, only for a short while until new friends he made and himself were sucked back in a-fuckin-gain and he (and least he thinks he does) got a man who he considered probably not even just as a sibling but like a fucking son to him and he just broke. He can’t take this shit anymore (not to mention he was already fucking high on the fact that his children’s home was destroyed).

I believe that (spoilers for y6) Rikiya's death was one of the losses that convinced Kiryu to leave the orphanage, Haruka and Haruto behind; he felt responsible and couldn't handle losing his loved ones anymore, because of him - because it all tracks back to him somehow. He loved Rikiya just as much as his kids. Honestly, in this scene, I cried with him, it was so soul-crushing. Even if I understand that, I would like Kiryu to be able to stay with them in Okinawa in the end and just retire, find some peace at last. He has been through enough.
When I first played Yakuza 5, I sort of complained about Kiryus character model, and how they made him look so sad, but not anymore, I'd be sad too if I lived the life he did, and if I lost that many people. Poor Kiryu.
I often wondered, if Kiryu just embraced being Fourth Chairman, rather than running from it, if the people he loved would have been more safe. This due to having the whole Dojima clan at his direction for protection, rather than him being on the periphery, his loved ones only having him for protection, and the clan helping him only when things really would go to shit. I always thought he would ultimately end up doing more harm than good to those in his orbit trying to stay out of things, but then just getting involved anyway all by himself.

Tachibana's death scene was one of the most saddest but most bad ass moments in the series considering what Kiryu says afterwards. "I'll bury the Tojo Clan"
I cried to rikiya and I kid you not my tears were rolling to the ground. My mom even asked me what was wrong. I said "it's like watching a movie, you get involved with the characters and watch them grow in person just to die"
That’s why I play Yakuza at night. Especially during this scene. The first time I played it tho it was like 10 minutes before dinner and I screwed up because I wanted to get to one more save point for the night. Then this happened and I cried my eyes out and 10 minutes later I went down to eat lol. I’m surprised my mom didn’t say anything. She probably knew but didn’t say anything. If my dad wasn’t working at the time he would’ve probably noticed or heard me
The fact that he always refers to him as "Oya-san" (Father, very polite) and he suddenly drops protocol to call him "Oyashi" (Not as "boss", that is also pretty common within the yakuza, but as a very informal way to refer as oneself's father, like "Dad", "Pops", "Papa"...) sells it for me.
@@nuetella9764 I've read comments over years since Yakuza 4 released, and people say it didn't make sense to make Hamazaki somewhat of an ali by helping Saijima and then Kiryu. they say Saijima's one thing, but Kiryu it didn't make sense. which I can understand, the ending of Yakuza 3 was controversial even to this day. but people forget Kiryu ain't like other people, he's willing to forgive if that person can redeem themselves. but for Haruka she couldn't look at Hamazaki the same way.

Rikiya’s death hurt me the most and I’m glad it’s #1 because I cried the most when he died. I was shocked at first tho, it wasn’t until Rikiya called Kiryu “the greatest man he ever knew” until I couldn’t control myself anymore. I knew throughout the game Rikiya looked up to Kiryu saw him as a brother and Rikiya grew to be my favorite side character after Akiyama. I was sad and angry because Kiryu could’ve prevented that if he didn’t become careless and turn his back… that’s why I love Yakuza 3 so much and don’t understand the hate for it. Rikiya made that game iconic in my eyes and I just wish he didn’t have to die… after all he was only a kid and a few years older than me

Rikiya was one really funny and wholesome guy in Yakuza 3 any danger that he had to face hes ready to face it and give his life away to sacrifice himself so Kiryu can finally finish the thing hes dealing with, dude was a great character in this series and one of the characters' deaths that made me cry..
Seeing Shinji's death is even sadder when you realize that during the final part of Shinji's substory in Yakuza 0 (aka the first time him and Kiryu met) Kiryu tells him to "figure out a way to outlive him". Not only was Shinji (and Rikiya as well) just an overall great companion to Kiryu, he was nothing more than basically a kid; he wasn't able to build up enough experiences and memories of the world before his death, which hits really hard.
I thought that Tachibanas deaths as the saddest cause he was a friend and he was the first one to die in kiryus arms. So I feel like it had a harder impact on the character same with kazama
Makoto’s “You’re tired.” at her dead brother made me weep bro. That shit was so sad. When I finally get to Yakuza 3, I honestly can’t tell if Rikiya is gonna be as bad or worse, but EVERYONE and their mother says it’s worse.
@@batsau652 and I get that, but just imagining myself in Makoto’s shoes in this scene is almost too difficult. Imagine meeting your long lost sibling for the last time, and at the same time your eyesight starts returning to you, only to realize he’s dead.
Rikiya’s death is the saddest for me. A naive kid with a big heart who never had a chance to experience the world. It was such a cruel end for him. On a special note I think Kashiwagi’s should of been much more of a big deal a wonderful supporting actor and one of my favourite Tojo Clan members.
Jesus, and 10 years ago, Nier made me cry over minor characters (ecspecially a certain wedding scene and one little brother who completely lost it). This franchise also looks it would make me sob at unexpected times.😢
Ryuji is a good contender though, being honest. He just wanted to be an honourable man proving worth to himself by fighting who he felt was his worthy rival, and got screwed over by all the people he worked with.

Something that not many of community understand, is, in 0, the moment when Tachibana dies and Kiryu and Kuze have this conversation, Kuze's words after Kiryu leaves that he has turned "into real Yakuza" has much more meaning. The theme that plays at this cutscene(WHY SEGA, WHY IT'S UNRELEASED???) has grieving and sad start, but in time it changes into something menacing and very new. Because this is the moment when Dragon and it's wrath have been awakened, the moment, when Dragon of Dojima has truly born. After this scene, in next Kiryu's chapter, we can see that he is changed. Street brawler's and youngsters mentality has nearly died in him, and we can see no more glympses but nearly full scale silent, menacing yet honest and selfless character, that defines Kiryu in series later in his life.
Honestly Kazama and Yumi didn’t make me sad at all. Rikiya’s I saw coming because they made the same mistake they always do leaving a weapon in reach of the bad guys. Nishiki’s and Especially Tachibana’s though. Those killed me
I don't know what it was about kazama, yumi and tachibana's deaths that just didnt make me sad, nishiki's made me tear up but rikiya's full on broke me.
Oof, Haruka should have heeded her mother's words, otherwise Y6 wouldn't have turned out the way it did, like Yumi here having lost her happiness (kiryu).
Honestly, what's sad, and amazing is that when Kiryu cries, it's not presented as him being weak. But genuinely being so sad that he has to cry. He's stronger than most, especially that he feels guilty over the deaths of some of the people who was close to him.
The whole series with Tachibana, trying to save him, finding him, Kiryu about punching a hole through Kuze's face, then having him die just short of seeing his sister again. Then Makoto calling for him at first thinking he was still alive, then realizing through touch that he was gone. This after you spent the whole game trying to bring them together. This series knows how to rip your heart out and stomp on it when it wants to, LOL!

His and Rikiyas deaths made me cry. Someya you could tell how much he regrets what he did to Kiyomi and just how much he wanted to show her he changed. What a shame
Yakuza is a great video game Saga, but this video provided my only gripe with how dumb Kiryu is. He knocks out opponents with guns and starts talking, turns hus back to them and boom everytime they puck up the gun and shoot at Kiryu usually and someone else bites the bullet, sometimes they shoot someone else. Kiryu never learned, i know he doesnt kill people, but dude either pick up the gun yourself or incapacitate the guy you now you didnt kill. After the whole debacle of Yakuza 1 one would think he would remember cause it happened more than once. But then it happens in every game. Dude pick up the GUUUUUNNNNN LOL
Rikiya deserved better :( I'll never get why Kiryu never thinks to disarm his enemies after beating them. So many deaths could've been avoided if he disarms them and doesn't turn his back on them.
I swear to God. #1 death should be at #4 spot. (That’s because his sworn brother died saving him. While I felt that, it didn’t come close to Shintaro Kazama’s death, because his American twin George Kazama was there.) #3 death should be at #1 spot. (Nishiki and Yumi meant the world to Kiryu. After Shintaro Kazama and Reina; were those two. Nishiki was his favorite sworn brother; he was LITERALLY like a brother. Yumi was Kiryu’s acquaintance, but to her; he’s her crush. The whole plot was there to finish both Yumi for the false pretense and Nishiki for his bad side. Either way; how they started going on the dark side is saddening. Nishiki lost Yumi; his sister Yuuko is dead because of a fraud doctor not helping him; Matsushige and Shimano kept insulting and defaming him. Kiryu was in prison for 10 years. Became a villain only by killing Matsushige. Killed a Dojima patriarch because he raped Yumi by rage. Killed his teammate and friend Reina. Shindo is also killed there. Enters Ares just to lose; kills himself and Jingu for killing Yumi. Just looking at Yakuza 6 and 7 made me reminded of Yakuza 1 Kiwami. Nishiki’s voice was in Yakuza 7, his same plot from Yakuza 1 Kiwami was in Yakuza 7. Ended the same way yet Nishiki stayed as his side persona “Ichiban Kasuga”. Yumi had the same problem when Haruka decided to go Yumi route in Yakuza 6, see what happened? Kiryu sacrificed himself, just like Yumi. For these reasons; Nishiki and Yumi deaths are #1.) #2 death should be at #5 spot (this is an overlooked case. Kuze kills the guy that both Majima and Lee were looking to kill for. Kiryu is just devastated and doesn’t know the story. Makimura is blind because of him. And yes, Nishiki is alive there.) #4 death should be at #2 spot. (That was the very girl who helped Kiryu before. Only reason she snitched on him is because she fell in love with Nishiki, who fell in love with Yumi. Still, she was willingly the ONLY teammate of Nishiki’s. I was sad when she died.) #5 death should be at #3 spot. (This was Shintaro Kazama, the man who killed the parents of the children in the orphanage; Kiryu’s, Nishikiyama’s and Sawamura’s parents. The only one who killed him, wasn’t Nishiki, but Shimano. Nishiki only wanted to say “I did it” so that Kiryu could hate him.)

Yakuza 3 isn't hated, only the combat system at the beginning levels are hated. The rest is like your fine Yakuza.

Shinji is the man
Seeing Shinji's death is even sadder when you realize that during the final part of Shinji's substory in Yakuza 0 (aka the first time him and Kiryu met) Kiryu tells him to "figure out a way to outlive him". Not only was Shinji (and Rikiya as well) just an overall great companion to Kiryu, he was nothing more than basically a kid; he wasn't able to build up enough experiences and memories of the world before his death, which hits really hard.
I thought that Tachibanas deaths as the saddest cause he was a friend and he was the first one to die in kiryus arms. So I feel like it had a harder impact on the character same with kazama

Makoto’s “You’re tired.” at her dead brother made me weep bro. That shit was so sad. When I finally get to Yakuza 3, I honestly can’t tell if Rikiya is gonna be as bad or worse, but EVERYONE and their mother says it’s worse.

@@batsau652 and I get that, but just imagining myself in Makoto’s shoes in this scene is almost too difficult. Imagine meeting your long lost sibling for the last time, and at the same time your eyesight starts returning to you, only to realize he’s dead.

Rikiya’s death is the saddest for me. A naive kid with a big heart who never had a chance to experience the world. It was such a cruel end for him.
On a special note I think Kashiwagi’s should of been much more of a big deal a wonderful supporting actor and one of my favourite Tojo Clan members.
Jesus, and 10 years ago, Nier made me cry over minor characters (ecspecially a certain wedding scene and one little brother who completely lost it). This franchise also looks it would make me sob at unexpected times.😢

When you think of it Yumi’s death is the saddest because she’s Haruka’s Mother.
Ryuji is a good contender though, being honest. He just wanted to be an honourable man proving worth to himself by fighting who he felt was his worthy rival, and got screwed over by all the people he worked with.

well... Nishiki directly or indirectly caused the death of reyna, shinji, sera, kazama, an innocent woman, and other people, i guess he had too much blood on his hands to stay alive
And thus began the cliche i call "pulling a nishki" under this category we can find individuals such as Ryuji, Mine, Nishitani or Awano
I'd argue Reina's death was one of the saddest in the series, also Ryuji and Nishiki didn't deserve to die... ;_;

Something that not many of community understand, is, in 0, the moment when Tachibana dies and Kiryu and Kuze have this conversation, Kuze's words after Kiryu leaves that he has turned "into real Yakuza" has much more meaning. The theme that plays at this cutscene(WHY SEGA, WHY IT'S UNRELEASED???) has grieving and sad start, but in time it changes into something menacing and very new.
Because this is the moment when Dragon and it's wrath have been awakened, the moment, when Dragon of Dojima has truly born. After this scene, in next Kiryu's chapter, we can see that he is changed. Street brawler's and youngsters mentality has nearly died in him, and we can see no more glympses but nearly full scale silent, menacing yet honest and selfless character, that defines Kiryu in series later in his life.

I don't know what it was about kazama, yumi and tachibana's deaths that just didnt make me sad, nishiki's made me tear up but rikiya's full on broke me.
Oof, Haruka should have heeded her mother's words, otherwise Y6 wouldn't have turned out the way it did, like Yumi here having lost her happiness (kiryu).

Honestly, what's sad, and amazing is that when Kiryu cries, it's not presented as him being weak. But genuinely being so sad that he has to cry. He's stronger than most, especially that he feels guilty over the deaths of some of the people who was close to him.

The whole series with Tachibana, trying to save him, finding him, Kiryu about punching a hole through Kuze's face, then having him die just short of seeing his sister again. Then Makoto calling for him at first thinking he was still alive, then realizing through touch that he was gone. This after you spent the whole game trying to bring them together. This series knows how to rip your heart out and stomp on it when it wants to, LOL!
Shinji & Rikiya’s were the saddest. Both of em were men up until the bitter end.

Kiryu has lost a lot of people throughout the games. But he’s also been stabbed and shot even more
Yakuza is a great video game Saga, but this video provided my only gripe with how dumb Kiryu is. He knocks out opponents with guns and starts talking, turns hus back to them and boom everytime they puck up the gun and shoot at Kiryu usually and someone else bites the bullet, sometimes they shoot someone else. Kiryu never learned, i know he doesnt kill people, but dude either pick up the gun yourself or incapacitate the guy you now you didnt kill. After the whole debacle of Yakuza 1 one would think he would remember cause it happened more than once. But then it happens in every game. Dude pick up the GUUUUUNNNNN LOL

#1 death should be at #4 spot. (That’s because his sworn brother died saving him. While I felt that, it didn’t come close to Shintaro Kazama’s death, because his American twin George Kazama was there.)
#3 death should be at #1 spot. (Nishiki and Yumi meant the world to Kiryu. After Shintaro Kazama and Reina; were those two. Nishiki was his favorite sworn brother; he was LITERALLY like a brother. Yumi was Kiryu’s acquaintance, but to her; he’s her crush. The whole plot was there to finish both Yumi for the false pretense and Nishiki for his bad side. Either way; how they started going on the dark side is saddening.
Nishiki lost Yumi; his sister Yuuko is dead because of a fraud doctor not helping him; Matsushige and Shimano kept insulting and defaming him. Kiryu was in prison for 10 years. Became a villain only by killing Matsushige. Killed a Dojima patriarch because he raped Yumi by rage. Killed his teammate and friend Reina. Shindo is also killed there. Enters Ares just to lose; kills himself and Jingu for killing Yumi. Just looking at Yakuza 6 and 7 made me reminded of Yakuza 1 Kiwami. Nishiki’s voice was in Yakuza 7, his same plot from Yakuza 1 Kiwami was in Yakuza 7. Ended the same way yet Nishiki stayed as his side persona “Ichiban Kasuga”.
Yumi had the same problem when Haruka decided to go Yumi route in Yakuza 6, see what happened? Kiryu sacrificed himself, just like Yumi.
For these reasons; Nishiki and Yumi deaths are #1.)
#2 death should be at #5 spot (this is an overlooked case. Kuze kills the guy that both Majima and Lee were looking to kill for. Kiryu is just devastated and doesn’t know the story. Makimura is blind because of him. And yes, Nishiki is alive there.)
#4 death should be at #2 spot. (That was the very girl who helped Kiryu before. Only reason she snitched on him is because she fell in love with Nishiki, who fell in love with Yumi. Still, she was willingly the ONLY teammate of Nishiki’s. I was sad when she died.)
#5 death should be at #3 spot. (This was Shintaro Kazama, the man who killed the parents of the children in the orphanage; Kiryu’s, Nishikiyama’s and Sawamura’s parents. The only one who killed him, wasn’t Nishiki, but Shimano. Nishiki only wanted to say “I did it” so that Kiryu could hate him.)
