Those things have been around since the mid-70's. One of those 'guitar toys' that never really made a huge splash, but the popular rock guitar players who have used them over the years have done some nice, creative things with them. Kind of like the talk box. Not every guitar player owns one, but they sound cool and are fun to play with.
@@hifijohn True that, but I reckon one's only 'limited' by the extent of their imagination. Justin Johnson can take some as simple as an actual spade shovel and three piano wires and make it sound cooler than an entire blues band on a typical Saturday night in a Chicago blues bar.
The first person I remember seeing using one was Stuart Adamson on The Storm, totally blew me away! what an awesome sound. You'll always be remembered Stu.
Yes, the band A Flock of Seagulls in the song "If I had a photograph of you (Wishing)", Paul Reynolds used it and it sounded so good with the haunting effect which was so rich. 🎉
Sara Jory uses one on the Hank W.'s Mansion on the Hill. The prettiest song and tone I've ever heard.I heard her play it Live at the Tx. Steel Guitar Show.
There's a sound made with ebow in a song called Akira Yamaoka - Room of Angel at the very beginning of the song. If anyone can make that you're my hero.
Works well but the latest version seems to be made of really cheap plastic and doesn't feel at all long-lasting when you hold it or change the battery. (Make sure you install the battery with poles pointing forwards or you'll stretch the wires too much and rip them out -- it's all pretty tight.) As suggested in demo, it works beast and most easily on the 2nd 3rd, 4th and 5th strings. Far better when used with subtlety rather than going for balls-out howling. Experiment with moving the Ebow forwards and backwards relative to the pickup, you can get more graduated tones. Take time and practice when changing between strings - that's trickier than you expect unless you're happy with breaks and silences or sudden screeches as you play. It's great fun.
Since '70s, Kyoji Yamamoto (BOWWOW, VOWWOW) has been playing E-bow like wood-wind instruments as flute, shaku-hachi. Because of the name, everyone easily comes up with playing the guitar just like fretless strings. He even played classical flute tune on tv-show in Japan.
I had one of the original ones in the early '80s - chrome plated, no switch. They used to switch on when you brought them near the pickup magnet... and the amp transformer... The second gen one, they put a switch on, which saved a fortune in batteries and the chrome one went in the bin. Always found they worked best on a single coil neck p/up, with 10-46 strings - lighter and it's less controlled; heavier and it tends to be more of an effort to get the string ringing.
So... basically Gibson's "robot guitar" mechanism for one string, controlled by the player. Neat concept. It's essentially the principle behind a guitar's pickups applied in reverse (using a changing/moving magnetic field to move the strings rather than having the moving string change the magnetic field and sensing that change).
I've been playing for a long time and had no idea this existed. I just bought the Plus Ebow for 5$ in the box with the manual, CD, stickers and all but no battery. Cheap Bastards, LoL! Looks like its gonna be fun to play around with. Lester is going to sound awesome tonight!
sound great being played on an electric acoustic - warm and wooden not as harsh as the telecaster on this video. Dare I say it does sound more like a bowed instrument when played on an acoustic! Take it Back - by Pink Floyd uses an ebow through an acoustic
Although I like eBows, and still own, use caution when placing it. They say right over or near the neck pickup, but mine demagnetized my pickup once and ruined it. It happens quite often with these.
Anti Phase I haven't had it happen to mine but if i had to guess i would say they had the pickups set real close to the strings, I have my pickups set real low to improve dynamics and to make sure my strings don't sound out of tune and i haven't had issues with the ebow yet.
The way the ebow works is the pickups make a pull on the strings in one direction and the ebow makes a pulsating magnetic pull in the other direction resonating the strings.
I also don`t have issues, but I picked up Ebow recently, so I had to be sure. I have 2 guitars, one has humbucker in a neck and is set low as well, but another one has an 80-s single in a neck, and it`s output is very low, so it`s actually set relatively high. Seems like I may damage it
In this video he said you can get one for under $100. I was like "HELL YESS!"...Then I clicked the link down below which directed me to buy it from Amazon for $330. Did you post the link you intended to post? Just a friendly observation. Not a complaint. Your video was great!
you can use any pedals with these all they do is create a magnetic field between the string and ebow so any effect can be put through meaning you can experiment a lot ore and really make your own sound.
The new E-Bow has been advertised as (& is called) the Plus E-Bow. Hope you catch their little joke in naming it. :-) If you read the manual it does suggest using the neck pickup btw. Also comes with a little disc you can watch wit many techniques explained.
What's the difference between using this and using a cello bow? Does this only hit individual strings versus cello bow being able to get all the strings?
Hey I really like this video! I've tried using an Ebow in a ton of ways and this really inspired me. Have you ever tried using it on an acoustic guitar? This would really be cool :)
Great vid! Maybe you’d be down to play my guitar invention. I’m including this ebow clip in a montage of all the types of guitar fretboards and fx pedals. The grooves add extra note to pulloffs. new bends and Reverb. Pull any string over fretcorner
So what would the popular opinion be on the idea of recreating violin parts from more classical songs on the e bow, so say for instance i wanted to do an electric version of Amie by Damien rice, could i theoretically use this e bow to make a similar but distinctly electric version of the violin in the outro? Id presume from the name that, that would be at least part of the purpose, to simulate a bow for the electric guitar.
I love Tele's! I was curious is yours an old one, or was it reliced to look that way? What year is it? Thanks in advance for answering......Jim PS: I have a squire affinity, and a moded one with a mini humbucker in the neck position. I used to be more of a strat guy, but lately the telecaster is my go to guitar!
Actually I wasn't thinking about what's that funny thing he's holding in his hand, I was thinking more of what's that funny black Glad garbage bag he's wearing for a jacket.
Caifanes Mexican Rock Band The Best EBow solo ever!!! Ithink So...Searhc this: Album: El Nervio del Volcan Band: Caifanes Song: La Llorona (Based in a Mexican Scary Legend) Year: 1994
Muy buen aparato que se ocupa en este hermoso instrumento gracias ah un guitarrista de una banda nombrada caifanes llamado Alejandro Marcovich conocí este hermoso efecto me llamo mucho su atención saludos
The "new" EBOW with the two position switch is a real pain in the ass. You can do the same thing without the switch by positioning it at different points on the string...

Stuart Adamson comes to mind.
not surprising I have one its expensive and has a very limited use.just a novelty.

Stuart Adamson from Big Country is my favourite player of the Ebow.
The first person I remember seeing using one was Stuart Adamson on The Storm, totally blew me away!
what an awesome sound.
You'll always be remembered Stu.
All I think of when I see the ebow is Stuart Adamsom using it to great effect. Stuart Adamsom RIEP!
I cant afford anything more than a rubbish bag to cloth myself, one day I hope to upgrade to a potato bag :)
Perfect contrast to the golden mango slab guitar.
a floor volume pedal is a great thing to have with these, they allow the gentle fade in and out without moving the Ebow
Smashung pumpkins- there it goes
My personal favorite Ebow solo.
Yes, the band A Flock of Seagulls in the song "If I had a photograph of you (Wishing)", Paul Reynolds used it and it sounded so good with the haunting effect which was so rich. 🎉
There is a band called Neutral Earth (full album)- check out the ebow on the song- Just Below the Stars. Wonderful use of the device.
Sara Jory uses one on the Hank W.'s Mansion on the Hill. The prettiest song and tone I've ever heard.I heard her play it Live at the Tx. Steel Guitar Show.
I've been pressing delete now for a while but I'm losing my calm real hard.
The Great Cessation
Good one
Play through a compression pedal... it helps to 'tame' some of the wilder shrieks that the eBow can sometimes deliver unexpectedly.
Yes! Another’s reason why comp pedal is underrated
lool was that the halo 2 theme song?
There's a sound made with ebow in a song called Akira Yamaoka - Room of Angel at the very beginning of the song. If anyone can make that you're my hero.
Do you have a delay pedal? Cause you would need one to make that sound.
mkonig It's either a reverb or a delay.
Yamaoka's soundtracks are just fantastic.
It's delay AND reverb... will this do? ua-cam.com/video/7lbVwG1XBOQ/v-deo.html

Say since when does Ryan Reynolds play guitar?
Thank God I'm not the only one that thought that this was Ryan Reynolds
I would like the comment but it's at 69
I think Ryan Reynolds does actually play guitar
It's danny d
@@tibetbukan8360 I thought I recognized him from somewhere lol

Check out 7th Dream of Teenage Heaven by Love and Rockets, Daniel Ash uses the EBow on the album and it sounds superb, he also plays a Tele.
Really the best thing is to get one and experiment with it. I have one and run it through different pedals.
Just realized EBow means electric bow, as in a violin bow.
Why the green screen at 3:59?
+YouOriginal It happens a few time, I believe it's a video render problem.
Subliminal message. If you slow it enough, it says "Buy eBows."

halo theme comes on mind for some reason
Haha, I thought the same thing.

yep, Halo is the vibe I was thinking when jamming at the start :)
Although I like eBows, and still own, use caution when placing it. They say right over or near the neck pickup, but mine demagnetized my pickup once and ruined it. It happens quite often with these.
it happens only when your pickup height is set high.
how did you demagnetize pickup? Did it happen at once or did it decay slowly?
Anti Phase

Yes, it should work with anything but nylon strings.
Good job explaining how it works. Thanks for showing us what normal notes sound like tho. I think we'd all had forgotten completely around 3:30
looks like a stapler

listen to Phil Keaggy on "The Master and the Musician" Ebow master!
Cheers man ... just the review / demo i was looking for
Will it sustain a note forever? That’s the only thing I care about. If anyone knows, please reply. Thanks.
Yes.
As long as that battery's got juice, it'll keep the note ringing.
As long as the battery lasts or you die - whichever happens first, so no it won't.
Like Nigel Tuffnel says, you can leave and go out for a bite and come back and your guitar will still be going "Aaaaaahhh..."
Interesting you mention Phil Keaggy, that’s where I first saw one.
This effect makes me fucking chills...
Good to hear how it sounds... but disappointed that we don’t get any explanation about how it works, what technology it uses.
The melody in the begging sounds very familiar but I can’t figure it out. What’s he playing?
John Hampton I heard a couple notes of the Mandalorian in there
Im looking for a practical way to quickly alternate between picking and bowing.
I think that was done with a sustainer (kinda like a built-in EBow), but I'm not certain.
Ok. Now I have to look for somebody who will show how it works with the other 5 strings!
Mick ronson used that in the freddie mecury tribute concert
What's the difference between using this and using a cello bow? Does this only hit individual strings versus cello bow being able to get all the strings?
Yes.

Does it work kind of like sustainer?
That 1952 fender
great review, thanks!
Can you play a song with that device for us ? ie you are stuck on limited wailing sounds --how about a longer tune /riff lick or song?
This must have been around for a long time. I remember doom band Anathema using that a lot in the early 90s (Daniel Cavanagh)
Prior to 1983. The band Big Country used them on their first album.

What exact Tele is that? It sounds beefy!
I've been playing guitar for 20 years and I always thought this sound was only possible with a Fernandez Sustainer.

Is the Ebow as good as the FB-2 Feedbacker pedal?
Sounds very nice :)

rpoland has some guy who even used it on an accoustic guitar, Stefano Barone - Batman
those come in handy i'm gonna get myself one
is there a specific separate ebow for guitar and bass guitar. I'm a bassist and quite interested in it's usage
Look up "ebow bass guitar". Should be the same device.
I wanted one of those, my whole life, but they are expensive.
I mean for me, $100 can be expensive.
Check out the new Sound Stone sustainer - its only like 35 bucks new
Does it work on acoustic guitar plugged in ???
Is it only available in Australia or something?...
