Exactly. When we watch golf, we're watching the 8~10 players (+ Tiger, of course) who are playing GREAT that week . . . meanwhile, another 50+ golfers are playing "mediocre" (for them), which means better than the best player in your club . . . every week. A pro, plays good-great, on 40+ different courses every year, muscle pains, bad nights of sleep, whatever. Sam is a PRO!
Honestly, watching Sam (and always Rick) struggling playing golf is what humanizes it, and reminds me that bad shots don't make the player bad. Two classy guys for sure.
(6 handicap here) This is literally the most educational golf video I've seen in a long time. This teaches a lot about what it takes to be a good player. I really enjoyed seeing the difference in shot set-up habits between his level of play and a regular player. Just curious how good his putting would be if he was on his 4th day of playing the same course and was familiar with the greens. (pro tournament style) Thank you so much for this and please try to get more videos in this style.
4 tournament days but it also depends on what tour he’s on. If he’s on one of the bigger tours, they play practice rounds and are on the property several days before Thursday.
Also I feel like normal people courses don’t have the insane breaks that the tour courses have. My courses at home have so many straight putts it’s ridiculous. No complaints from me though lol

Tracer shots are dumb graphics for kids. Puts me off watching modern golf. Well that and the absurd driver head size. Between the huge driver heads and the tracer line it looks like a looney tunes cartoon.
I caddied on the American PGA tour in the early 90s. One of the players I was working for went and played a round with me a regular public course one day. He shot 61! He was just a guy who struggled to keep his tour card, not a guy who was winning on tour.
@@57Jimflynn ... nope. My friend who has a card gives me a shot a hole...I play off four. He often drives the par fours that I hit a wedge into. Birdies for halves anyone?
"It's been a few days since he's hit a ball, and no warmup." Ah yes! The REAL weekend-warrior public course test! Lol. Seriously though my local course is 9 holes, no driving range. For league, you basically get off work, go straight to the course, "warming up" consists of half-assedly stretching and swinging a club around while you have a few sips of your first beer while you're waiting for your turn on the first tee. It's real blue-collar stuff lol.
100%. I have played with couple guys that have played in PGA events. At couple local golf clubs. One played in a British Open. Dude got out of car, swung a speed stick few times, then shot 65 with 2 bogeys. Whole other level.
I grew up and played with him in a junior golf tournament in Florida and man he was prodigy back then shooting 5 under at USF the Claw course. Just straight up beat everyone. It was a sight to see.
Seems like a very genuine guy, looks like he'd be lots of fun to be around. Also the things I'd do to shoot 4 under in my course is immeasurable lol. He made it look easy even when he says his game was garbage.
Sweet job man!! Completely ruined watching the video with your comment showing he got 4 under as a banner across the video. Well done mate, appreciate it.
how good is he, just amazing, and so so easy to listen to as well. A very humble man and it is also a credit to you to have quality golfers giving their time to be on your channel
This was soooo good to watch. The level of consistency and his self-honestly was very refreshing. I watched in awe, and can only say that "I so mispent my youth". Marvelous golf on an unknown public course. Oh, and Rick, you would make a semi decent caddy LOL
Loved watching how a tour pro dissects a course that we play. If he played the same course again in good weather he’d probably shoot 62 now he has a feel for it. Seems like a really chill dude too.
Really enjoyed this video as I have often wondered how a pro would perform on my local course. Rick you hosted this perfectly. Complements to Sam as he demonstrated that professionalism in golf isn't just being able to hit it long, but in maintaining a courteous, calm, and positive demeanor. I think he also had the foresight to play casually, and not hyper focused to mirror how most amateur's play.
Rick is the only reason why I'm back playing golf, I stopped for 5 years and he made me feel the excitement for the game again. He reminded me why I loved the game so much and his enthusiasm is transcendent! Amazing channel Rick!!
These type of videos of tour pro (or ex) professionals playing with cheap clubs or local golf courses are my favourite. Brings home just how phenomenally good these guys are. Keep them coming Rick!
Yeah I know nothing about golf, and all golf shots and swings look identical to me normally. But these videos really make it obvious - even to an idiot like me - just how good they are. Just how much better pro golfers are than regular golfers. Also I love the thing he does with these videos and he uses his editing software to show you the path of the ball in a big red line. Whenever I've watched golf on TV, they never seemed to have that, and instead always just seem to track the ball in the air even though with a shot like that, there's no reference points in the frame to tell you where the ball is or where it's going and how fast it's going, the shape of the arc, etc. So I dunno if modern day golf presentation on TV already does this thing Rick does. But if they don't, they desperately need to, because it demonstrates far more clearly what's going on I'm glad I found this channel. I never knew golf was so fascinating. I might actually try and play it again (well, I have never played on an actual golf course, I've only ever been to a driving range, and I was never any good at it, but I'll try again now)
I’d really be lucky to get 67 on the front 9 on some of these courses you guys play. Fantastic skill and a gentleman. Thanks for all the great content.
This is a terrific idea and I love the way you display the flight path as a second view. I would really love to see more of this “pros on the average course” stuff and you do that interaction extremely well my friend. Great video!!
Sam shot a 58 on my home course in Orlando (course record, of course!). That's an average of 3.22 strokes per hole folks! My brain cannot comprehend such a thing, but he's just that damn good.
Thanks so much for doing this! Much like a lot of golfers, my buddies and I always discuss how a tour pro would do on a regular course. This was fantastic!!!!
This was fun. All of golf should be filmed this way. Was Waaaaaay more fun to watch. You really feel like you were out there with them chatting it up and the off angle shots. SUPERB Rick!
These events could absolutely put a cameraman with every duo and stream it to a members only website where you pay extra to be inside the duos. They'd make STUPID money. Really surprised it hasn't happened yet.
@@GearycoI think that a pro golfer might find that distracting, especially in a tight match with money on the line. Same reason why it’s only on a special occasion that it happens in other sports. A major league pitcher would not want to be miced up on every single start, that would get extremely irritating
Enjoyed this one, Sam seemed down to earth and not too full of himself. He seemed to have a healthy dose of humility, which will keep you in check on the bad days. I know, because I suck at golf but at the same time am driven to get better at it. Great video!
It’s crazy at watch this man be disappointed in a round that 99% of the commenters wouldn’t even dream of ever having. Awesome video, hope you can get more tour players to do these
Hey, Rick! This is a great idea. I’d love to see more videos of tour pros playing normal golf courses, maybe even a par 3 course! Also, speaking for myself it’s fun to watch you play as well with the pro. Keep these videos coming, they’re fantastic. Sam is an incredible golfer and I look forward to following his career.
What impressed me most is that he didn't lose a single ball or take a single penalty on a course he'd never played before. That alone separates the men from the boys
What impressed me the most is that I never felt like he was going to make a bogey (except for the par 3 one). Every time he got a par, he had a birdie opportunity and the par was an easy tap in. He was so in control! Man’s got game!!!
Guus, you are so right! He never really was in any trouble at all and he made golf look so easy on what I would find to be a long, difficult course. I can’t wait to get back out there- and not look anything like him!
A few years ago we had a couple of former University of Georgia team golfers come and play our semi-private course in middle Georgia. They had never played it before and both did pretty well. It is a par 71 course from the white tee playing 6750 yards. One of them shot 67 and the other shot 65. Mind you, it was a warm, late summer afternoon so the ball flew a bit better through the air. Having a nice cold beverage after the round, one of them commented that he thought the course wasn't that tough but course management was the key since there are so many risk/reward opportunities that a few bad decisions would cost several strokes. I mentioned that course management is the only way I play. It was a fun day for all.
That was one of your best. Love watching a tour pro play what to us mortals is normal course golf. And coming away at -4. So cool. Thanks to all involved.
Sams a Great sport for doing this. In Difficult conditions with no warm up he made a 4 under look ridiculously easy. Just shows how good a tour pro is compared to us mere mortals.
Definitely became a fan of Sam... Enjoyed watching this and the easy going style . I played every sport an American kid could and golfing by far is the toughest sport. Keeping emotions in check is all mental.
Rick can do a whole series of this and it would be phenomenal. Very difficult to do but still. Crazy how effortless that round was for him. Their games are just on another level
A course I used to caddie at had a good number of pro players hanging around and I caddied for a handful of them- they are definitely playing a different game than us
@@quiksix25 A lot of people will tell you the difference is their short game, but as you saw, when the greens are not perfect, it is still not easy. For me on an average course the main difference is just the accurate distance off the tee. A low amateur would score about the same if they dropped their ball in the same spot. The difference comes more on the harder tracks where the penalty for missing the fairway or green is greater and there are more unlevel lies, and the greens get faster. At that point they really are playing a completely different game, and it is one most amateurs never even get to play. Even if you do play one of the championship courses, it isn't set up in championship shape and it the tees are rarely at the back.
@@TheToledoTrumpton I agree to a point, one thing I noticed was that they take max 3 strokes when they're anywhere near the green, and usually 2 (saw more than a few chip ins as well)- as you can guess though these aren't your average courses, they host a PGA event every year RSM Classic
Yes… any tour level players are just so good!! To me what makes them so good, isn’t the great drives or shots into the green. But how they navigate trouble. I mean … he’s literally stymied under a freaking bush.. and makes a Ho-hum par! Ridiculous!!
I’ve played 10 rounds so far I’m hooked already, I’ve followed so many of your videos and each week got better and better, 2 weeks ago I broke 100 and was over the moon now to break 90 Thanks for all your help
5 months later, I'm 10 and able to play 15 holes. At the age of 9 I was only able to play 12 holes- haven't played since August 2021 tryna get my Papa to get us both out playing 15 holes-
@@broketables way to go buddy! On the last three holes, ride along with your papa and take a free drop near the green to practice a tricky pitch and then putt. Exercise to get stronger and more endurance to be able to play those last three in your downtime. Push ups, squats and other body weight exercise in higher volumes will get you over that hump in just a few weeks.
Great fun Rick. The learning curve when watching and listening to a pro's analysis and shot formation decisions is always a a tremendous insight for my own game. I would recommend all amateurs save up and pay for a pro to pay 9 or a whole round with them every now and again as the learning curve is exponentially better than lessons on a practice range.
A quick story that this reminds me of. In the early 1980's Seve Ballesteros played an exhibition game in a course close to me in Ireland. It was the day after he won the Irish Open. The course is about 6900 yards from the tips, so with equipment changes probably played then like a 7200, 7300 yard course plays these days. It's hosted all of the biggest Irish amateur tournaments, so it's not a cakewalk. I'm sure it was set up fairly tough, it must have been the biggest day in the club's history. Anyway, without his regular caddie and focusing more on chatting with the spectators, he casually knocked it around in 68, four under. Bit of an eye opener.
Great video. Absolute kudos to Sam Horsfield (and Haydn) for being up for this and having a smile on his face the whole time. Always wondered how the Pros would fare around the VERY different conditions we encounter every week that are so alien to them - agree that if you can get them, this should be a series.
Out in Tyler TX right now and even the country club out here has dead spots. It’s murder. Though the dry conditions make for nice long drives that just roll out a good ways.
At my club a PGA professional in a Scottish PGA event recently broke our course record and shot a 60 around a par 72 course with a standard scratch of 73
Watched Sam play high school golf in central Florida...many kids want to play in the pros but he was one everyone knew had a great shot at it. It's great to see Sam doing so well.
Wow. That was so much fun to watch. Things I picked up: 1) His attitude was so positive, relaxed YET focused. 2) His swing was ridiculously repeated over and over and over and over. And over. He hits a baby draw. Over and over. And over. Wow. And hit one cut shot - on demand. Again, wow. 3) His attitude is so freaking positive but I said that before. 4) His 4 foot putts are MONEY. Those were probably WAY more important than his superb ball striking!❤
The camera work made this so enjoyable to watch. I don’t even like golf. Great concept tho. Pro’s playing regular courses. I’d watch another one. Bravo.
What a nice guy Sam was, his shots were so pure every time. I think I need to make sure that my clubs aren’t damaged in anyway because my ball never does what Sams did 🤔
you could give him damaged clubs and he would do the exact same thing though.... its not the clubs, its how you use them. put it into perspective with this. you can take one of the cheap golf sets out of a local store and they are better than the highest quality clubs that the pros were using 50 years ago..... but even with those clubs, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer and all those other pros were smashing the courses. you just need to practice, practice, practice..... dont think or worry about the club too much, it does not make that much difference.
Took up golf three years ago to replace my weekend work as rugby union referee, love your chat through the technical seasons and challenges, they help my game understanding a lot. Fingers crossed that the lessons help me lower my handicap to somewhere under 15. Just need to add a driver to my bag now….
If you have the time to practice, and put on some more muscle, you can hit a 6 iron 220 yards like me-off the fairway like tens of thousands of other amateurs. I'm in my 60's and I occasionally use a 2 wood off the tee, but muscle back irons are 'my bag.' And stiff steel shafts since I started age 10. 2 iron; 6 iron and 8 iron are mostly what I use, find clubs you are naturally good at. True. Decent handicap you already have. I would like lessons, but never had the time. The trick of course is the short game to lower your handicap, from 150 yards including putting. Work in the sand traps, too. I learned from playing with my Dad, the Dallas, TX city amateur champ for 5 years in a row, then Ft. Worth for the 3 years we lived there, then hosting his own tournament annually at Incline Village for fun.
Great video is this. Very educational for someone starting golf or someone who's played it all their lives. Love how Rick tells Sam what to do and what approach to take and he just listens and takes it on board and respects that Rick knows the course, such a cool guy. Well done Rick!
What a hell of a video. Tour pros expect so much from themselves. I noticed his scores didn't feel better as he couldn't get his shots to the back parts of the green on deeper pin locations. Still an amazing player as he played that course for the first time and still shot 4 under. Crazy!
Yes, I was surprised how he hadn't even walked the course and was able to place his ball at will for the most part. Probably would have played even better in good weather.
Amazing to see how our typical golf courses, and their level of preparation drastically effects the level of golf, especially the green speeds. Playing stimp of 13 or 14 is your usual and then playing our muni styles of 9 has got to be frustrating
One thing I noticed about sam’s swing is how stable he is with his lower body. Almost no movement in the backswing and then just explodes through the swing
This goes to show you how golfers at any level aren't happy with their game at times. Sam shoots a four under 67 and still isn't happy with it. But by doing this will make him a better player next time he hits the links. Same goes for us amateur players as well. Great video as usual Rick. Keep them coming. Happy golfing to you all!
I played for 25 years and my biggest goal was to get better control of backspin on my approach shots but couldn't ever get more than just a quick one hop stop and never any backspin. Then I played on a pro course just after a tournament and everything became clear that I was just on crappy courses all my life. Every approach on that pro course spun back completely off the green and even as much as 20 yards of backspin. I had taught myself a bad habit without even knowing it.
Great video Rick. I think it really settles a lot of the curiosity of how Tour guys would fare around a regular course and probably really helps even good amateurs understand just how good the Tour Pros are. I have always been a good amateur player, playing off as low as +2 this year, but more realistically somewhere between 2-3, and friends always ask why I hadn't been tempted to 'give pro golf a go' and I've always said that I am about 8/9 shots on average not good enough. I think the standard is about +5/+6 to even think about it. Sam seems like a really down to earth nice guy too and a hell of a golfer.
I grew up around the fringes of the county scene, played scratch golf etc. 1-+2 handicap golfers were 10 a penny around Warwickshire, there was a lad Chris Evans in my age group who was the best to tread the fairways and then Andy Sullivan who was 2 years younger. Chris playing off +2-+4 done nothing, Sully made it and dozens I grew up with like myself do not play anymore. The levels between good amateur, great amateur and low level pro (below challenge tour) is scary.
Recently met and am friends w a +5 and he tried to make the tour and couldn’t. Possibly other aspects prevented him from cracking the pga tour, but maybe +5 isn’t quite good enough.
I got down to +2 when I was in high school and early in college; the gulf of difference from where I was to a tour pro is massive. I played a US Amateur qualifier with Webb Simpson at a challenging course with maniacal pin placements. He shot 67 and barely broke a sweat, I shot 74 and had to finish eagle-birdie to do so. Those guys make everything inside 10'.
@@nathansabula6355 yes! When i play with my old coworker thats about 30 years older than me i always shoot better but when i play with guys more around my level or worse that's how i play ...mental bullshit i tell ya hahaha
Years ago, my brother-in-law played a round at a public course in Austin, TX with a PGA Tour pro, Omar Uresti. My BIL (who is a scratch golfer) outdrove Omar on pretty much every hole, and they were tied after 8 holes at even par. Then Omar birdied the next seven holes, ended up shooting 65 (which was the course record at the time)... my BIL shot even par and got SMOKED 😂
@@toddinthemiddle He IS a legend... and a + handicap. Seeing the gulf between him and a journeyman tour pro was eye-opening. Most people can't comprehend just how good these guys really are, and they play courses that are more difficult by several orders of magnitude.
This is a great video. He rated himself as a 3/10 for the day. Just shows how the pros think. Much more upside and don't mentally limit themselves. Also, shows how they are realistic about recognizing what they think they did poorly.
@@schnauzerears912 on that course playing for fun his 3 is fairly accurate he couldent do much worse. This was the white tees at a local course that isn't hard
I used to play in Punta Ala, which is one of the toughest courses in Italy. Matteo Manassero used to come there in the summer to train when he was in his prime. The average score in Punta Ala for a scratch golfer is over 74, Manassero scored 65 on a regular basis.
This is strange, yesterday I was playing golf at my local club and thought "I wonder what a pro would score here... someone should make youtube series bringing pros to local clubs". Get out of my head Rick.
People think all pros are going to shoot sub 60, but they are conditioned to think that all pros shoot like the top pros for the week. When watching a tournament, they generally only show the top guys, so people assume everybody is knocking it to 10 feet from 180 every time. The general population's expectations aren't realistic, even for pros.

Me and my dad never keep score at our local course

Same here.
100% relate to this.
But if they don't, they desperately need to, because it demonstrates far more clearly what's going on
I'm glad I found this channel. I never knew golf was so fascinating. I might actually try and play it again (well, I have never played on an actual golf course, I've only ever been to a driving range, and I was never any good at it, but I'll try again now)

This course looks on easier side. Greens were average so it fucked up his putting. And rain. With better greens he’d have shot low 60s easy
@Praise Jesus, Repent or Likewise Perish repent spam
What impressed me the most is that I never felt like he was going to make a bogey (except for the par 3 one). Every time he got a par, he had a birdie opportunity and the par was an easy tap in. He was so in control! Man’s got game!!!
Guus, you are so right! He never really was in any trouble at all and he made golf look so easy on what I would find to be a long, difficult course. I can’t wait to get back out there- and not look anything like him!
It just shows how good these guys are compared to us normal Joes.
Was not impressed with his putting, though

Good to watch, Sam has a fantastic attitude and seems like a truly likeable fella.

He could have easily had 62, putts just didn’t drop , Sam is a really cool cat ! All the best in your career will be watching !
Wow. That was so much fun to watch. Things I picked up:
1) His attitude was so positive, relaxed YET focused.
@@orion7741 he was kidding
It's actually a pretty cool idea Rick, you should do more of this.

I wish I could golf like that on an off day, or on a great day! Thanks Rick for sharing Sam's (Pro) perspective.
One thing I noticed about sam’s swing is how stable he is with his lower body. Almost no movement in the backswing and then just explodes through the swing
Still can’t believe went to school with this guy. Hell of a player representing strong down here in Florida 🤙🏻🤙🏻
How are you? Can we be friends?
I played for 25 years and my biggest goal was to get better control of backspin on my approach shots but couldn't ever get more than just a quick one hop stop and never any backspin. Then I played on a pro course just after a tournament and everything became clear that I was just on crappy courses all my life. Every approach on that pro course spun back completely off the green and even as much as 20 yards of backspin. I had taught myself a bad habit without even knowing it.

So proud spotting a South African on the shiels channel. Maybe oneday I’ll make it too…
This was my favorite video in your lineup, Rick. Great content!
It's not really a regular public golf course. Its still a PGA Championship course at £60 a round.
It’s fun to play with people who are under par every round 👍🏻

My BIL (who is a scratch golfer) outdrove Omar on pretty much every hole, and they were tied after 8 holes at even par. Then Omar birdied the next seven holes, ended up shooting 65 (which was the course record at the time)... my BIL shot even par and got SMOKED 😂
