    (6 handicap here) This is literally the most educational golf video I've seen in a long time. This teaches a lot about what it takes to be a good player. I really enjoyed seeing the difference in shot set-up habits between his level of play and a regular player. Just curious how good his putting would be if he was on his 4th day of playing the same course and was familiar with the greens. (pro tournament style) Thank you so much for this and please try to get more videos in this style.

For league, you basically get off work, go straight to the course, "warming up" consists of half-assedly stretching and swinging a club around while you have a few sips of your first beer while you're waiting for your turn on the first tee. It's real blue-collar stuff lol.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 2 роки тому

      Yeah I know nothing about golf, and all golf shots and swings look identical to me normally. But these videos really make it obvious - even to an idiot like me - just how good they are. Just how much better pro golfers are than regular golfers.
      Also I love the thing he does with these videos and he uses his editing software to show you the path of the ball in a big red line. Whenever I've watched golf on TV, they never seemed to have that, and instead always just seem to track the ball in the air even though with a shot like that, there's no reference points in the frame to tell you where the ball is or where it's going and how fast it's going, the shape of the arc, etc. So I dunno if modern day golf presentation on TV already does this thing Rick does. But if they don't, they desperately need to, because it demonstrates far more clearly what's going on
      I'm glad I found this channel. I never knew golf was so fascinating. I might actually try and play it again (well, I have never played on an actual golf course, I've only ever been to a driving range, and I was never any good at it, but I'll try again now)

    A few years ago we had a couple of former University of Georgia team golfers come and play our semi-private course in middle Georgia. They had never played it before and both did pretty well. It is a par 71 course from the white tee playing 6750 yards. One of them shot 67 and the other shot 65. Mind you, it was a warm, late summer afternoon so the ball flew a bit better through the air. Having a nice cold beverage after the round, one of them commented that he thought the course wasn't that tough but course management was the key since there are so many risk/reward opportunities that a few bad decisions would cost several strokes. I mentioned that course management is the only way I play. It was a fun day for all.

    • @TheToledoTrumpton
      @TheToledoTrumpton 3 роки тому +2

      @@quiksix25 A lot of people will tell you the difference is their short game, but as you saw, when the greens are not perfect, it is still not easy. For me on an average course the main difference is just the accurate distance off the tee. A low amateur would score about the same if they dropped their ball in the same spot.
      The difference comes more on the harder tracks where the penalty for missing the fairway or green is greater and there are more unlevel lies, and the greens get faster. At that point they really are playing a completely different game, and it is one most amateurs never even get to play. Even if you do play one of the championship courses, it isn't set up in championship shape and it the tees are rarely at the back.

    A quick story that this reminds me of. In the early 1980's Seve Ballesteros played an exhibition game in a course close to me in Ireland. It was the day after he won the Irish Open. The course is about 6900 yards from the tips, so with equipment changes probably played then like a 7200, 7300 yard course plays these days. It's hosted all of the biggest Irish amateur tournaments, so it's not a cakewalk. I'm sure it was set up fairly tough, it must have been the biggest day in the club's history. Anyway, without his regular caddie and focusing more on chatting with the spectators, he casually knocked it around in 68, four under. Bit of an eye opener.

      If you have the time to practice, and put on some more muscle, you can hit a 6 iron 220 yards like me-off the fairway like tens of thousands of other amateurs. I'm in my 60's and I occasionally use a 2 wood off the tee, but muscle back irons are 'my bag.' And stiff steel shafts since I started age 10. 2 iron; 6 iron and 8 iron are mostly what I use, find clubs you are naturally good at. True.
      Decent handicap you already have. I would like lessons, but never had the time.
      The trick of course is the short game to lower your handicap, from 150 yards including putting. Work in the sand traps, too. I learned from playing with my Dad, the Dallas, TX city amateur champ for 5 years in a row, then Ft. Worth for the 3 years we lived there, then hosting his own tournament annually at Incline Village for fun.

Then I played on a pro course just after a tournament and everything became clear that I was just on crappy courses all my life. I think it really settles a lot of the curiosity of how Tour guys would fare around a regular course and probably really helps even good amateurs understand just how good the Tour Pros are. I have always been a good amateur player, playing off as low as +2 this year, but more realistically somewhere between 2-3, and friends always ask why I hadn't been tempted to 'give pro golf a go' and I've always said that I am about 8/9 shots on average not good enough. I think the standard is about +5/+6 to even think about it. Sam seems like a really down to earth nice guy too and a hell of a golfer.

    Years ago, my brother-in-law played a round at a public course in Austin, TX with a PGA Tour pro, Omar Uresti. My BIL (who is a scratch golfer) outdrove Omar on pretty much every hole, and they were tied after 8 holes at even par. Then Omar birdied the next seven holes, ended up shooting 65 (which was the course record at the time)... my BIL shot even par and got SMOKED 😂

      Omar probably needed to get used to the greens. I think that is the biggest thing for pros playing new golf courses.

    This is a great video. He rated himself as a 3/10 for the day. Just shows how the pros think. Much more upside and don't mentally limit themselves. Also, shows how they are realistic about recognizing what they think they did poorly.

    I used to play in Punta Ala, which is one of the toughest courses in Italy. Matteo Manassero used to come there in the summer to train when he was in his prime. The average score in Punta Ala for a scratch golfer is over 74, Manassero scored 65 on a regular basis.

      People think all pros are going to shoot sub 60, but they are conditioned to think that all pros shoot like the top pros for the week. When watching a tournament, they generally only show the top guys, so people assume everybody is knocking it to 10 feet from 180 every time.
      The general population's expectations aren't realistic, even for pros.

      I worked at a golf course for about 3 years and let me tell you. Rich old ladies are horrible. It seemed rather polarized now that I think of it. The ones that weren't mean were really nice. But most of them were mean.
