Hi, Eric, I switched to diamond stones a while back except for my ultra-fine 10000grit, for which I still use a waterstone (as far as I can tell you can’t get a diamond stone that fine. I don’t have the knack for hand sharpening, so I have used an Eclipse-style jig. My big complaint about this style jig is repeatability. I find them incredibly fussy to get the exact same angle set each time. I have a Veritas MKII jig on order in hopes that I can get the repeatability of angle that I am looking for. I do my primary bevel on a grinDing wheel with a Wolverine jig and then switch to diamond stones (and the ultra fine waterstone for smoothing plane irons) for my secondary bevels. I have a side business restoring old planes for resale to the woodworking market (not for collectors) and find this combination works very well. Stu
You could probably forego the high grit stones and go to a stropping leather for probably equal or better results. Of course sharpening is one of those things that takes practice and you end up trying many things before you get the right combo for you. By the way, I just restored an old Stanley Bailey plane iron using the jig from my video and it did an amazing job and maintaining the proper angle. Your Veritas jig will make life a lot easier🙂.👍
@@EricSorensenCanada Following up on this: my Veritas MKII arrived today and I spent a couple of hours sharpening. This jig has more than met my expectations. I mentioned that repeatability of angle set was key for me. As I test I put a primary bevel on the blade for my No. 7, removed it and sharpened the blade for my No. 3, and then put the No. 7 back in at the same angle. More often than not the imprecise setting on the Eclipse-style guide would have resulted in enough difference that the blade needed significant rework of the primary bevel. The Veritas was pretty mush spot on. Some have said that they initially found the Veritas to be fussy to set up, but I did not find that to be the case. It was also easy to mis-fit a blade in the Eclipse style and have the blade come loose when sharpening. Not so for the Veritas. I got the full kit for the Veritas to have the narrow clamp for narrow chisels and the roller for setting cambered edges. I have not tried these yet, but if the work as well as the rest of the kit I will be well pleased.
Very nice update video on sharpening Eric! That Sharpal diamond whetstone looks like it would do a great job. I was wondering if that stone needs flattening at some point & how that's done? Just curious.....👍👍😉😉
Thanks Steve! Glad you asked... Nope, the diamond stones do not require flattening like the traditional whetstones. Also, if you happen to drop it, it won't break like a whetstone. Although it might dent your floor😬
Nothing more satisfying than sharp tools!reminds me that I need to sharpen a bunch of mine. Thank you Eric!
You got that right Anthony🙂. Cheers!
Yep , I have the same sharpal diamond stone , it sharp well 😊
Good system, thank you. 👍
Thanks! I just bought a Record bench plane on impulse for way more money than I should have spent and was worried about how to sharpen the blade.

Nice! Yes, it takes all the guess work out, and you will find you can get your blades and chisels sharp in a fraction of the time.
