Reallocating courts from tennis to pickleball really irks me, but I'm sure I would be thrilled if I was on the other side of the argument. Just hope tennis takes advantage of the growth again in the upcoming years with more kids picking up the sport during the pandemic.

Pickleball is a fun social sport. I have played a few times and my club is looking at building some courts on property. It's a simple (other than scoring) sport with a low skill barrier for entry. Literally can hit around for 5-10 minutes and be able to hold a rally, so I get why it's growing so quickly. The only issue I have with pickleball is they typically want to take away tennis courts for pball courts. In many cities to get tennis courts built there was a lot of effort into fundraising, design reviews and city permitting to get them built and to just swoop in and take some of that away sucks. If pball went through the same effort to get their facilities built I don't think anyone would have issues at all.

I don't have a problem with pickleball. I don't play it but I'm glad that there are many people who have taken to it. Sure, as a tennis player I can see it's limitations and personally decline. What I don't like is that since pickleball has been becoming more popular, it seems like resources that would have been used for tennis are being used for pickleball instead. It all started when my prior town re lined the tennis court so that pickleball could be played on them. The pickleball players always lowered the net and never raised it back for tennis. Now, the city I live in took out 4 of the 10 tennis courts and converted them to pickleball. Great, less tennis courts. Now, the Tennis Channel is running pickleball tourneys and I'm thinking about dropping my subscription to the TC. Tennis magazine running articles for pickleball? I thought the USTA published Tennis magazine. Why in the hell are they running articles on pickleball. What is their primary purpose?

My complaint as well. One of our local set of courts has Pickleball players camping out on the courts with lawn chairs to hold the courts for the whole morning. In the past, they put down tape on our indoor courts which tennis players tripped over. The tennis players just removed the tape before playing so they moved pickleball to the basketball courts. The basketball players complained. They eventually moved them to another facility and now they are out-of-sight, out-of-mind.

POP Tennis (paddle tennis) would have been a more natural progression from tennis for tennis players looking to transition to slower lower impact game, but Pickleball took off so fast because it is just so easy to pickup, and as PB grows the $$$$ grows. Was a news item a Canadian city that saw PB players on tennis courts, but the sound the plastic ball makes on the paddle and hitting the court just carried and was so annoying, the local community complained.

I am a tennis player since 10. Also a table tennis player. Love any raquet sport including European paddle. But pickleball is phenomenal. The inclusion factor post COVID makes its momentum. Literally I love it. I was teaching my wife to learn tennis but we play pickleball since the first time competing any type of player. It does not have gender or age. It is definitely more fun if you play doubles ( same as tennis playing singles). If you go alone to a pickleball park, there is a inclusion process that you play immediately. Tell me when in your life you go to a tennis court to play singles or doubles and someone cannot go, you definitely will not play. In pickleball it does not matter if you go alone or you are 2 or 3 you definitely will play. It is super fun and since the games last around 10 min or so you keep rotating and play with other people. I normally play for 2-3 hours. My knees are happier and I can play all days. I am 51. Definitely I can’t play tennis everyday. I love tennis/pickleball/ table tennis.

Any racket sport will see high level, physically demanding play from ping pong through tennis and should be respected. That said, imposing pickleball lines and play on to tennis courts is offensive and unnecessary. It's not that difficult to set up a badminton court. Perhaps it might be an object lesson to set up a badminton court on top of pickleball lines and see how pickleball players react.

I despise pickleball and I cannot wait for such a useless fad to fade away into obscurity. Pickleball players are the worst. They take over and destroy the local tennis courts. They have no etiquette, they take without asking, and they believe that they are entitled to ruin the sport of tennis. They need their own courts. Tennis courts are not pickleball courts, and tennis courts should never, under any circumstances, be converted into pickleball courts. At a playground, tennis courts and pickleball courts should be constructed as far away from each other as possible.

VERY interesting to this table tennis player. Sounds like Pickleball is the polar opposite to table tennis. Spin is not much of a factor (the rules seem to mandate racket surfaces that don't impart spin to the ball), so pretty much anyone can pick up a racket and start hitting the ball across the net. I found one night, to my chagrin, that the typical man/woman/kid off the street can't handle a standard table tennis racket with inverted sponge rubber on it - any small amount of spin on the ball (unavoidable) causes the ball to come off the racket in strange directions. (A shopping mall set up a table with barriers and left some bats and balls out for casual passers-by to have a go.) It takes some 15-20 minutes of coaching before said person can even return the ball across the net. People have recognized this, and have come up with variations on the sport where spin is attenuated to the point that the equipment is easier to handle - "classic hardbat", sandpaper, 42mm ball leagues (mainly in Japan and Korea, allows only pips-out rubber with thin sponge), and something very Pickeball-like called TTX (smooth plastic bats decorated with pictures) - the first three have avid followings in various parts of the world (even to point of having tournaments with significant prize money), the last has been almost universally derided these last few years despite ITTF pushing it pretty hard. At least they all share the same table (the 42mm ball variation uses a higher net).

I'm an avid tennis player but have been starting to play some pickleball this year. The learning curve for PB is not as steep as with tennis, IMO. So I feel that lends itself to having more people try and play PB. Also, my experience has been (as mentioned in the video) is that PB is more inclusive. PB players typically welcome new people and it's much more social. Tennis, where I live, is much more clique-ish. I'll go as far as saying that many people don't want others to be a part of their tennis groups because it takes away time from themselves to play. And I've witnessed on more than one occasion tennis players get into shouting matches and almost come to blows with other tennis players because of how long they've been using the public court. Locally, people complain that PB players monopolize the courts meant for tennis. But in reality, tennis cliques have been finding ways to monopolize the courts from other players as long as I can remember. In some ways the complaints I hear from tennis players about PB players is a little bit of "the pot calling the kettle black".

I’m in South Carolina and Pickleball is taking over. The main reason is that you can always find a group of 20+ people playing at anytime and they’re welcoming. You literally can’t find a pick up game of tennis. If you don’t plan a match with someone you’re not getting a game in.
Unfortunately not anyone can pick up a racket and play well. Private lessons are over priced at $60 for 45 minutes. Not that ppl really need them but you can get a PB lessons for half that price.

Was at a resort last week with a tennis club, 4 hard courts, 2 clay and 1 grass... one hard court had Pickleball lines as a trial; which was so popular, they are going to build set of 4 dedicated PB courts. My comment was the PB ball sound on PB paddle is so loud, guests might be annoyed...as in some jurisdications have that issue. PB community is quite welcoming, which is what I found, and you will see people playing who otherwise would not be involved in many physical sports, so it gets people moving. The PB players vs tennis background-PB players there is a definite difference in style, where PB guys like to "dink" (weird term) rally more, while I seen tennis players just hit the sh1t out of that whiffle ball... ha ha. POP Tennis (paddle tennis) should have been bigger than Pickleball, but ability to squeeze Pickleball into school and community gyms in winter is huge advantage.

Same thing is happening in Chile, but with Padel insted of Pickleball. More and more courts are being built for Padel, even some Tennis courts are being taken down for Padel ones. However once I tried Padel myself I understood why all the fuss. Padel is really, really easy to play, and it's also very very fun. It doesn't take a lot of technique to become quite good at it, so having no background in any other sport, playing 10 times will make you good enough to have fun on the court. I have the feeling Pickleball is the same, as far I can tell (no pickleball here). To be able to enjoy playing tennis you need to develop some of the basics and that takes a looot of time, and it can be frustrating for a lot of people. I think thats the main difference between tennis and both pickleball/padel, and that might explain why those are becoming so mainstream.
Now i play Padel once a week, and tennis 3 to 4 times a week. Would I ever switch to padel? No. Do I enjoy both? Yes. In fact, i think I'm better at Padel than I am at Tennis 🤣 (6 years playing tennis, and 9 month playing padel). Bottomline, I urge you to try Pickleball. Maybe you will be surprised 🙂.
    Cheers!

I think Pickleball is a simple sport that doesn't seem to require much technique or athletic ability to play. The balls look like wiffle balls and so you should be able to put a lot of spin on it and probably that's what makes it popular. I don't plan to ever play. I've been offered by pickleballers to play to bring over to the dark side but the thought of not running turns me off. If I really want to reduce my running, I would play doubles instead of singles. I really don't think there is an age limit in tennis, I've seen plenty of elderly players on the public courts. And they are in excellent shape. A lot of them play singles. Pickleball, however, is like playing checkers on a chess board. The boards are similar but the pieces and the movements are totally different. And the skill level and aptitudes are totally different and is so the complexity. More power to pickleballers everywhere but please stop hogging the courts when you play. You stay on court for three hours with your group cos it's not a demanding game and I've seen players of every shape and size. But you are supposed to vacate if someone is waiting for the court on the top of the hour in our area. Please honor the code of conduct.

I look forward to the day when tennis courts are full and the tennis players walk over to the pickleball courts to work on their tennis short game with tennis rackets, not piddleball sticks.
Tennis is to blame for their failure in not attracting more tennis players.
Pickleball players, STAY OFF THE TENNIS COURTS. It is a separate game. If you want respect from tennis players, try giving it first...do that by staying off tennis courts.
Pickleball is a great game. Fun for anyone, but it's NOT Tennis. So don't treat it as something it's not.
Tennis Channel is pissing off tennis players for one simple reason....$$$.
They know that once older tennis players hit their max physically, they will switch to pickleball. All it takes is 1 guy or girl from the foursome who plays regular dubs to switch over.
Will they do a spin off channel? Maybe. Does mini golf have it's own channel? lol. I don't think pball will have the viewing on TV that tennis has. P ball has more of a beach volleyball atmosphere imo.
As an avid tennis player and coach in his 40s, I played pickle once. Didn't like the post effect it had on my tennis strokes...but thats just me so i choose not to play it. I EASILY competed with the top players at the facility and took a big red faced gulp when i told them it was my first time playing.
Tennis is at a crossroads and pickle is winning.
Shorter courts, more players, shorter games, cheaper equipment. See the connection? more fee$$$s for the clubs. This game is all about convenience.
From a tv viewing standpoint....I think the game is VERY boring to watch...but very very easy to play....pro tennis is freaking amazing to watch... pro pickleball is not that impressive at all. If you already are decent at tennis, you can kill at table tennis, pickleball, racketball etc...but it doesn't go the other way.
    My three cents.

Where I play, Parks and Rec dept. took two tennis courts and converted them to 4 pickle ball courts. Pickle ball players keep asking my partners and me when we’re going to take up the sport. I always tell them that when my legs won’t move too well I’ll think of playing pickle ball. I still like to run and move around the court and get exercise. I practice with a young man who played 4 years of varsity tennis and just graduated. My clothes are drenched with sweat when we leave the court but it’s a lot of fun.

Tennis Spin was a bit PC in this video. I would have liked to hear his opinion. Are you upset tennis courts are being converted? Is pickle ball a dumbed down version of tennis? Will pickle ball hurt high level american tennis if kids are learning pickle ball instead of tennis? Just imagine the young junior who no longer has a local tennis court because it was converted to pickle ball. Will this be a barrier for the next Serena or Sampras? Can a young person have a successful pickle ball career? For me, pickleball looks like a dumbed down version of tennis. The long journey of mastering the strokes, movements, and strategy of tennis seems to be missing. I feel this builds character in young people. At the same time, I think the pickle player could argue that journey is there in this sport too. I would love to hear the experts weight in. I would like to see a thoughtful long term strategy put in place for how court space is provisioned for tennis and pickle ball that takes into account junior development in tennis and other questions rather than willy nilly conversion.

Played picjkleball for a couple of years, but none in the past 5 years. It was a bit difficult to unlearn some of my tennis instincts on the rules of pickleball, e.g., "the kitchen" and no volleying. Made a decision to stick with tennis, as I get better exercise and fitness from that. And, adding pickleball lines to tennis courts is a real nuisance. Its confusing for both sports. Kinda like, "fish, or cut bait". Have the playing surface dedicated to one, or the other, not both. I think that is forthcoming, though. Our Parks & Rec resurfaced the 4 tennis courts in one park and we now have 12 solely-pickleball courts. Helps with the court demand traffic on the weekends.

It is a fad. You play a few times you are an expert. How does this keep people engaged? What do they have to work on to improve? For example, you golf and the first thing you want to do is break 100. Then 90, 80 70 etc. You take lessons, you go to the range, work on bunker shots, putting, driving, etc. Getting better is a major part of any sport, and takes time. Pickleball is instant gratification. If you need to work to improve on pickleball, you probably need to work on walking. I would have no problem with it except they are taking over tennis courts. My area does not have a lot of courts and they are taken over by schools during seasons. What we have left is pickleball. Will there be a high school pickleball team?

Don't have any complains. Not many cities/counties have money for the new infrastructure. Rather convert existing into something new. Been done with pitches made to have football, American rugby and in some instances baseball crossed over. Also, in gyms, basketball court will have multi lines for other gym sports.
In the end, whatever you play is a good thing, tennis or pickle ball, because it keeps that heart running healthy. Less people going to hospitals, win for the whole community.

I've got nothing against pickleball (or any sport) but--the noise is horrible. The awful sound of that ball/paddle can travel a half a mile. It's like the sound of aluminum baseball bat (but that probably sounds better). The sound of a tennis ball being hit is a good sound (so is a wooden bat in baseball).
The game is very easy to learn--but after a while there is no real challenge and then becomes boring.
Tennis is far more popular world-wide and always will be. Pickleball likes claiming the fasted growing sport but that's mostly do to numbers. In my neighborhood we have about 100 tennis players and maybe 10-15 pickleball. Since covid tennis picked up about 15 players and pickleball about 5. That was 15% for tennis and 33% pickleball. I could say tennis picked up 3 times as many players as pickleball or pickleball can say they picked up twice the % as did tennis.
There were a couple other sports that "swept the nation" much more than pickleball supposedly is. Bowling was one of the most popular sports in the 50's. Racketball was projected to overtake tennis back in the 80's.
Tennis has been around a long long time. There have been times of it being wildly popular and times not so, but it has stood the test of time. Few sports adults can play are as challenging or offer the amount of exercise that does tennis.

If they have a kid who is looking for a long time sport and have time to develop I suggest tennis. Also more drop in play opps for pickle ball, that’s my main gripe with tennis now, having to coordinator players.

The tennis industry fears pickle ball!
    1) Paddles are durable being totally plastic &/or carbon fiber.
    2) You don't need to re-string paddles. So no string sales or stringers needed.
    3) Balls are hard plastic & don't require frequent replacing like pressurized tennis balls that wear out or go flat.
    4) Its so simple to learn & pickup, players don't need coaching.

Every sport that it's related to a racquet it's good for everyone whether it's table tennis, squash, paddle, or either pickleball, bacause people can start with one sport and then move to another one.
I don't think that pickleball is going to growth like tennis like having 4 grand slams because there is history and tradition over there, and also golden generations.
Also if there are still local tennis shops in the market is because of the string services, and pickleball does not use strings and changing ball it's not so frecuent. For that reason I see a mix with tennis shops selling other raquet sport supplies but tennis is leading.
The problem for tennis is that it is not easy to learn. You need classes, body preparation and time to really compete.

Wow, pretty negative comments from people that don't seem to have much experience playing pickleball. I enjoy playing both. I'm at a 4.5 level at both and divide my time pretty evenly. I prefer doubles in pickleball and singles in tennis. For those that say pickleball is not physically demanding you're wrong. Is it less demanding then tennis? Yes, but if you're playing at a higher level with people of the same skill level, it definitely works up a good sweat very quickly. Pickleball singles can be very grueling. I do agree that watching pickleball on TV isn't very exciting but I would probably say the same thing watching a tennis match with players I don't know or particularly care about. The things I like most about tennis is the variety of shots, point construction, strategy, mental aspect and just the feel of hitting a tennis ball. With pickleball I like the social aspect, fun factor, short games, speed battles, and tournament atmosphere. Hopefully people just keep an open mind and realize both sports can thrive.

We went early to get a court because it gets filled out pretty quickly throughout the day. When we got there, it was empty except for an elderly lady unpacking her equipment. Upon seeing us, she approached us saying that all the courts were saved for their pickleball club. Even though courts can't be saved, she made the argument that no other local tennis courts have drawn lines that cater to pickleball, and therefore we should have the etiquette to find tennis courts elsewhere. I knew she was in the wrong but because my son was nudging me to just give in, I wished the lady a good day and left; all in the meanwhile thinking, "what just happened?"

But, in San Diego, they are trying to take over the public non-profit run tennis clubs. All of these clubs have been around for decades, are self run and maintained without any community funds. But there’s a for profit company that wants the city to just give them a tennis court; otherwise have threaten to take over the club and have recently just walked onto courts with their nets and refused to get off. Put the time and energy into getting funding and get your own facility. Don’t take over a self-sustaining vibrant community tennis club.

For the better now it is quiet, the noise was on our side. There must be a lot of money behind this shit, they built a whole new exclusive club for them in the athletic park. Great for tennis players who cannot make money as a tennis player but succeeds in picka'ball, like the cover boy, but it is a bust to the local tennis communities. These people look through you as if you were a ghost as a tennis player..easy to get on court enjoy quickly, how can you compete with this crap while tennis remains a life long adventure, if you didn't have to compete for floor space and time with them by any means might be a great exercise and social event for many....
