    Really cool project. If I can suggest: there are far better knots than overhand to use in applications where you're going to support someone's personal body weight -- especially since this is not a hitch but a stopper-knot scenario. I think the best knot to use would be the Ashley knot. Another good way to go would be the double figure-eight which is a bit less bulky. A single figure-eight knot is a great knot, and even less bulky than the others, but if it's bounced around it does have some risk of unbinding (often used in sailing where you don't want a line to get drawn through whatever it's been passed into, but you'll eventually want it untied).

  • @oakartist3369
    @oakartist3369 4 роки тому +67

    Great video, I have lots of safety concerns though, I’ll start with: freehand cutting on the tablesaw...very dangerous. You’ll end up with a terrible kickback and might lose fingers in the process. My cousin had to have part of his intestine removed after a tablesaw kickback doing something similar.

    • @ZeldaplusSmallville
      @ZeldaplusSmallville 3 роки тому +3

      there's a lot of different things it depends on as to whether or not free-handing is safe on the table-saw. the way he did it in the video wouldn't have kicked back the material in such a way that would have impaled him because he wasn't holding the sticks with the ends pointed directly at the saw blade, instead, it was the center of the sticks; not to mention, he had both hand's on the sticks at all times.
      Also, it depends upon the type of wood you're using and/or the power of the saw. Working in a mill, the saw would be much stronger and you should never really free-hand anything on them, especially since you could probably just use a band-saw instead since the scenario is in a mill. I've worked for a stair company, and in the shop there were holes in the wall behind the table saw, obviously from wood just shooting like bullets.
      But these standard table saws that basic carpenters carry around or have at home that plug into a 20amp circuit most-likely aren't going to kick a piece of wood back at a person so fast that it impales their tissue, unless of course it shoots something toward the eyeballs.
      Now, I don't work at the mill. I mostly do finish trim carpentry, and I freehand a lot on the table saw simply because I don't have a portable band saw. The blades on the regular 15amp table saw, like the one in the video, will stall due to lack of torque far sooner than overpowering you and kicking you or the material back.

    • @jamesspadaro7722
      @jamesspadaro7722 3 роки тому +4

      @@ZeldaplusSmallville Complete nonsense. There is no advantage to freehanding (really, you can't at least fit a miter gauge alongside your jobsite saw?) - the cut is less straight AND less safe. What's the point?
      And *maybe* it won't kickback, but if you've been a finish carpenter then I'm sure you've *seen* kickback. It's extremely violent and not something worth playing around with. For the cuts you describe, use a miter saw then. There's one of those on every jobsite I've ever seen.

    • @ZeldaplusSmallville

      @jamesspadaro7722 3 роки тому +1

      @@ZeldaplusSmallville It probably isn't, I agree. But it's also very volatile and hard to predict. What's the point of taking the chance? What are you gaining? Oh, right, crappy not-straight crosscuts. Miter saw is literally *right* there. Same with a miter gauge. Laziness and shoddy work to save... literally no effort.

    • @ZeldaplusSmallville
      @ZeldaplusSmallville 3 роки тому +1

      @@jamesspadaro7722 I have two miter saws I carry around with me, you can’t take a piece of door casing that’s 3 1/2” wide by 85” long and cut that down the line on a fucking miter saw. You’re loopy dude.
      If the walls out of plumb and I have to rip the casing the fit the wall, sometimes it can be over 3/4” out of plum and you can’t use a skill saw and you damn sure can’t take a miter saw that only reaches out 15” and safely cut down 85” inches of trim material.
      You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.
      All I have to do is drop a line and follow it on the table saw like I do on the bandsaw. It saves time and money and you’re not going to get impaled by a piece of trim material.
      Want me to post a video of me doing it for you so you can learn a thing or two?

      Not really. Think about it like this, the rope in the middle is the one actually holding up the structure. The other ropes are tied really tense to keep it stable.
      It's essentially like if you hung a chair from a tree.

    • @archaicplanet
      @archaicplanet 3 роки тому

      This is exactly the type of Physics that you learn in school, so no it's not illegal. The chair is being held up by the strings since they're all stretched out as much as possible. If you apply force on one side, the strings on the other side will stretch but since it's at its max tension, it'll go back to equilibrium. Same as what happen when you apply force evenly, the string inside will try to stretch but since it can't, the chair remains stable.
