Conquering Alaska's Most DANGEROUS Road: The DALTON HIGHWAY Adventure - Part 1 of 3

Part 1 of this journey takes us from the Dalton Highway sign in Alaska to the BLM Arctic Circle Campground. This is a drive through one of the most remote and striking landscapes in North America. The Dalton Highway, also known as Alaska Route 11, stretches over 400 miles from Livengood to Deadhorse near Prudhoe Bay, and is a vital supply route for the oilfields of the North Slope. This rugged road offers intrepid travelers an unforgettable adventure through Alaska's untamed wilderness.
Starting at the iconic Dalton Highway sign, you embark on a route that quickly transitions from the relative civilization of central Alaska to the vast, pristine expanses of the Arctic. The highway is largely gravel, with rough patches and steep grades that test both driver and vehicle. As you drive, you are surrounded by sweeping vistas of boreal forests, rolling tundra, and majestic mountain ranges. The road climbs and descends, winding through the formidable Brooks Range, where wildlife sightings are common. Caribou, moose, and even grizzly bears can be spotted along the route, adding an element of excitement and awe to the journey.
Approximately 115 miles north of Fairbanks, you reach the BLM Arctic Circle Campground. This modest yet significant site marks the point where the highway crosses the Arctic Circle at latitude 66°33′ north. The campground is a perfect spot to rest, reflect, and take in the surreal beauty of the Arctic landscape. Here, you can stand at the edge of the world, where the summer sun never sets and the winter night never ends. The Arctic Circle sign is a popular photo stop, and the campground itself offers basic amenities such as picnic tables and fire rings, making it a comfortable base for those exploring the extreme north. This leg of the journey encapsulates the spirit of adventure and the raw, untamed allure of Alaska.

I smiled for the entire video remembering the drive. Thanks so much for capturing the moment when we thought the road repair guys where going to dump a huge bucket of dirt on our van! From my view out the passenger window it looked like it was much closer.
