I remember this weekend distinctly. I was working as an pit lane official for CART and when Dan crashed, they called "all hands" out on the track to clean up the mess (there was fluid and body parts everywhere). When we got to Dan's car. I thought it was an RX7 or a Nissan -- there just wasn't much of a car left. Without seeing the SCCA accident investigation results, my thought is something broke while he was running flat out and the car just turned into the wall and hit a TON! I didn't hear that it was a fatal accident until after the Indy Car race, when I was at the airport waiting for my flight home. Even if you don't know the driver, a fatal when you're working on track ALWAYS hits like a kick in the gut!
I was at this race in the pits helping with the #55 bob sobey pontiac entry...our biggest thrill was the seamingly amount of cheers bob got at driver introductions for being sponsored by Harley-Davidson. Way more than even paul newman recieved! Those were great days to be involved in trans-am racing!

fuel slosh. when hard braking and turning with low fuel, the fuel will slosh away from the pickup tube in the tank. think of the last sip from fast food cup with a straw . car almost stopped after the turns (fuel slosh) when the car straightened out after the turn it took off again. he was running on fumes.
What a pity the other American teams all threw tantrums over the whole 1988 season, which resulted in more engine restrictions and weight penalties for the Audi. Which was the only car in the whole field to be constructed from a factory shell, had only 5 cylinders & less horsepower than every other competitor. It’s advantage was not just quattro, but good old fashioned GERMAN engineering which made the Americans look like idiots. No surprises the following year the Audis were banned.
It's interesting that the Merkur XR4i's won every race barring one, in the previous season. No real tantrum there. I think Merkur's were European Ford's, that were sold on the American market.
