I made a video about using a flip phone for 30 days about a year ago! It had its challenges. No GPS and not being able to Google things was hard. I used an old iPod to listen to music (which forced me to listen to old songs from the 2000s). I found myself calling people a lot more because texting was painfully slow. And not being in group chats meant I was somewhat out of the loop. But it was very refreshing getting off of social media and disconnecting. I began checking my phone every couple of hours instead of every 10 minutes. Can't wait to see what you take away from the experience Matt!

I see a bigger problem here: Our economy needs to change. We can not measure our growth at the GDP and force the consumers to buy buy buy!
There has to be a sustainable component to it! The feel good wealth of a community, nation, continent needs to be given value!
Because after all, our economy pushes the 4 or 5 releases of Apple, Samsung and others every year, as we need to consume and buy buy buy! :( This kills our planet. Very fast!

    • @Averro
      @Averro 4 роки тому +33

@Cesar Gomez this is totally fine, at some point an upgrade or buying something is totally fine. Even I gotta admit I upgraded from my iPhone 7 to the 12 Pro now, as I didn't want to change the battery for the 3rd time. My mother will be more than happy to to upgrade from her phone to my iPhone 7.
I personally (! (don't want to accuse anybody here)) see the problem in the Zara shopping cycle community, where every 2 weeks new products are being displayed and people really get those new products every time! Also Zara is just an example, which describes it pretty well tho!
It is time to take out the speed a bit, let the nature re-grow, maybe learn to fix something instead of just ordering a new one and so on!
      Happy to discuss! :)

"Why do I need this?" Well, you don't. You've been conditioned to think that you need to spend a thousand dollars every year on a new phone when the one you bought last year still works just fine. People are brainwashed to believe that they need this in their life as if they will be missing out on something. The same way people buy the new COD or Madden games EVERY YEAR. even though the games change very little if at all. You dont need a new phone every year. You're being conditioned to think that you do. I had an iphone SE for years without issue. The only reason I upgraded my phone and ipod was because they made it so neither of them would work properly anymore. They became obsolete. The phone wasn't working properly. the ipod wouldn't connect to itunes anymore. I was forced to upgrade. It's all a scam.

I used some Motorola phones for the past years like the G5 and the G7!
The only reason that I upgraded my G5 is that it's had a crack on the screen and was bleeding out color real bad so I got rid of it and got myself a G7. Both of them cost about $250ish bucks since I got them with being 3 years apart from buying them. And yes, they are my most expensive phone that I paid for and honestly it's not worth it... The G7 is my last Smartphone that I would buy before strictly buying these "Dumb phones" for cheap. I just want to use a phone AS a phone, Headphone jack to listen to music that I have it installed on the phone and calling personal people. I despise social media and thank god I don't have a Twitter or a Facebook! Too much fucked up shit on there to see that is filled with Assholes or morons. I'll gladly keep my sanity thank you.

I have that exact phone. Biggest challenge: people text me, I call them right back and they don't answer, and they don't even check their voicemail if I leave a message. Even my closest friends can't seem to remember that talking on the phone feels better than texting - tone of voice, and real-time back and forth of an actual conversation are an antidote to the loneliness everyone complains about, but they "don't want to bother anyone" by calling. You're not bothering someone who likes you by wanting connection with them! And to schedule anything, it takes less than 60 seconds while talking on the phone, but trading texts can go on for literally *days* and in that timespan, my availability changes. It's so much simpler just to have things scheduled than to try to keep juggling a bunch of maybe's. I have an old GPS in my car, and a chromebook for internet. Some things are actually more expensive with a flip phone because places like gas stations offer a discount if you use an app to pay, and you can't do anything that requires you to scan the data matrix.

There was a scheme a few years ago where the government were going to make sure that every person in the UK had access to a PC. Of course they don't need that scheme now as everyone has a smart or iPhone and that's what the powers that be want. @@SgtNicholasAngle I think the reason is that many people struggle to not use their phone for social media etc. even if they intend to quit is that it has become a habit. So using a device (for some time at least) that simply can't open these apps makes it easier to break the habits. I completely quit using reddit (only social media I ever used) but it wasn't as easy as just deciding on it, I still have a page blocker for it in my browser, because even after months the habit is strong, sometimes you need a bit of an extra tool to change your ways, and I guess the same goes for using a flip phone for some time.

I store phone numbers in it so I can "Talk" to people. I don't need to be connected to the internet everywhere I go. I can actually see where I'm walking because my face isn't focused on my phone. If someone calls I choose to talk or not. I can actually hang up on content I don't want. I have a PC lap top I use if I want to connect to the internet.
I don't have a need to take pictures of everything around me. That's what God gave me a memory for.
Get off you're "Smart Phone" and start talking to people again. Soak in the beauty of what's around you. You don't need to be in constant contact with everyone on social media. It's all fake anyway. Get real and start talking to everyone again.

Your livestyle may not require that you pick up email or texts while out of the house. My business does. I love tracking my workouts, having digital images that I take with my phone, taking notes, organizing my day, being able to transfer that data between my phone, Ipad, laptop. I dont do much social media, but my phone is the most useful tool. I dont have to find that grocery list that I put down somewhere in my house, or that important note or notes that somehow got misplaced. I listen to the news on my phone, have all my contacts in one place, deposit checks into my bank account (only at home) scan documents that I need, track where my car is when I park it in an unfamiliar parking lot, use it as a magnifier in a restaurant when I forget my glasses. The flashlight comes in handy too. So many things! But I walk by the beach with the phone in my pocket, and I listen to the ocean, watch the clouds float by and feel totally alive!

Eh, some years it's pretty much the same. iphone 6s-8 were pretty identical minus the improvements to the manufacturing side (waterproofing and whatnot), but the original iphone X and now iphone 11 are a massive step up. The 12 is less exciting because the 11 was so amazing. That's how engineering works. You save up improvements until you get a ton of awesome stuff and then you release it. The next cycle after such a massive improvement is going to be less impressive. The only thing I was really excited about was that 16 billion transistor M1 chip Apple made. It was seriously impressive.
I personally find great satisfaction watching the improvement of technology and keeping track of it. This is coming from someone that spends maybe $350/year average on cool new electronics. 2 years ago that used to be closer to around $250 but there are so many cool new things with tangible improvement from 5 years ago coming out!

Every evening that I went outside with my friends I brought with me an old Nokia with a number that I gave only to few people (parents and close friend). I've done this because I realize that every time I have a few dead minutes I spend them looking at the phone instead of THINKING (about anything). I think that we are not use to think anymore (even to light weight things) and this is very dangerous for our brain. Our modern phones have features that we can't live without (music, GPS, photocamera etc...) and it is anachronistic to get rid of them. We have to find a solution to be not distracted and use these powerful devices in an intentional way (I haven't find a way yet).

There’s no contract. I just buy a card and add minutes as needed. Oh, it also has an alarm clock and a timer. Cheap, convenient, meets my needs. If I socialize by phone, it’s by having a conversation. I feel no need of “following” anyone, and I certainly do not want others “following” me! I think that’s the most powerful thing about this experience. It used to be that if you wanted a camera or a GPS you went out and bought one of each. There are entire industries around those product segments. The smartphone offered a convenient way to package it all together. The only problem is that now the smartphone tends to place itself in the center of our lives. We rely on these things. That’s what makes downgrading such an interesting experiment.

Well I must say, having a smart phone has replaced my computer except for having to write documents. Having a portable GPS is a blessing too, god help me back in the day when I had to navigate using a map or printing directions on map quest to go to new places. Just turn off notifications and it will not interfere with your life in my opinion. My Samsung S8 is 4 years old now, works great, I got it for $200 2 years ago.

The key is simplify your inputs and distractions. I have a LG Smartphone that is 6 years old. I have zero apps except to get Chrome and Gmail. I don't play on-line games and only have Linked In , FB, and Instagram (For my photography). In addition, I still have a 10 year iPod for my gym time. I can communicate with who I want on my time and not be barraged by notifications and likes all the time. My phone gets turned off everynite around 730 and I don't miss it. I sleep well, eat healthy, gym time and many outdoor activities to maintain physical health. With tech, like anything, less is best. Manage what you can and keep it minimal. I just turned 56 and had excellent annual physical. My mental health is solid and I do my best to stay physically connected rather than thru media channels. Actually calling someone rather than texting. Being trapped into having the latest and getting the most 'likes' will destroy you financially and mentally. Peace and I wish all the best.
