    Barolo wines are made from a red grape variety Nebbiolo, native to Piedmont region in Italy. For the past ten years I have noticed an increased interest and demand for Barolo wines, which has led to significant increase in their prices. However, there are still few gems available for a relatively affordable price and in this video we will look at five of them: Rivetto from Serralunga d’Alba, Domenico Clerico and Aldo Conterno from Monforte d’Alba and Vietti from Casteglione Falletto.

    All five are GREAT choices... Aldo Conterno is starting to climb up in price quite a bit. Vietti's Castiglione bottling for me is classic and I always have some in the cellar. During blind tastings, I know that Pira's wines can have brett at times (I don't mind it but some people detest it_.

    There is no talking about Barolo without mention of the late Renato Ratti. And of course the relative cantina. At L'Annunziata below La Morra il grande Renato (worthily followed by his son Pietro) has a wine museum in an old abbey.
    In any case, wonderful post... I subscribed and delighted to find your channel.
    Back in the day, my now 98 year old mom (from New York) taught English to plenty of names on your list. Talking about the mid seventies.
    I like Barolo... but the best and easiest of Alba wines is Dolcetto (no wood, no aging, just stainless steel and fruit). I hope you get around to introducing the world to this fantastically affordable variety.

    I recently purchased a bottle of Conterno Il Favot 2011 for around $40. It was a discounted price as I think an older Langhe Nebbiolo might put some people off. But it was wonderful. Awesome. Felt bummed when it was gone because I knew as a close out I'd never find again at that price. I'm a bargain Barolo shopper.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Рік тому +2

      Wow, great find! I will go further, I have spoken with a lot of wine professionals, and many of them are put off by Nebbiolo. 😬 But yes.. it is such a wonderful grape variety and even Langhe Nebbiolo can age so beautifully and give so much on nose and palate in terms of flavours and complexity. I also like to look for bargains in wine 🍷! 😉

    I have some Aldo Conterno, Vietti and Pira in my cellar, and I haven't any regrets buying these wines. I had once Clerico at a tasting - I wasn't impressed that much, but maybe I was in a bad mood or the wine in a difficult stage. But I think you gave very good recommendations!🙂 Maybe you should once look out for Fletcher - they have Barolos and Barbarescos, good quality at still reasonable prices. Hopefully they don't get too high! Cheers!🍷

    With this list I think you will enjoy Roberto Voerzio and Sandrone. That being said, Aldo Conterno Romairasco is still the best Barolo I have had, with Voerzio very close.
    I think the hidden gems are in Serralunga. The wines speak quality and true terrior, and are priced reasonably too. High quality single vineyards like Prapo and Lazzairasco are still under $100 USD. Names are Guido Porro, Germano, Luigi Vico (newcomer), Giovanni Rosso, etc. So much fun to try! The vigna rionda from Germano and Guido Porro are around $150, they are so tasty!

      Hi, Giacomo Conterno is a TOP producer in Barolo and in my opinion these wines should be drinking beautifully now and in the next (5-10) years. Both vintages are considered warm, so these wines might be more approachable sooner than wines from more classical vintages. But I have not tried Giacomo Conterno 2007&2011 recently, so this only my opinion. 🍷✨ Cheers!

    Funny how tastes & fashion change ... thirty years ago, Clerico, Aldo Conterno, Vietti, and Pira were all leaders in the movement to "modern" style Barolo, featuring some (and in the case of Clerico, a lot) barrique aging. They were some of the most expensive and hard to finds in the market. I would never have expected them to appear in a list of undervalued producers!

    Thanks for your video, but for my taste Domenico Clerico and Vietti are very overrated including their Barolo MGA. To my taste, the wines Cordero di Montezemolo - Barolo Monfalletto and Paolo Scavino - Barolo are very good and tasty. Paolo Scavino also has very good Barolo MGA, but their prices are quite high. I started the wine hobby 3 years ago and I only have 283 wines tasted, rated and recorded, so I'm a beginner and still have a long way to go.

      In my view Vietti is one of the top, top producers in the region. Interesting how the style will change now that original owners are no longer with the estate. Paolo Scavino does offer great wines, and I love many of their single vineyards, but it is Serralunga - so very structured and powerful wines and sometimes delicacy can be preferred. 🥰 Cheers! 🍾🍾🍾

    Of the wine varietals, when correlated to price, it seems as though Barola has the most variance. I recently tasted a 2017 Luca Bosio, 14 ABV, and the wine barely had any tannins was Light to Medium bodied and the most subtle trace of spice/oak. The most notable wine attribute was the smooth taste and balance with acidity. After tasting, researched oak aging and indicated 36 months on oak but no disclosure of percent new oak, my hunch is neutral oak. Based on such variance in other Barolas, I think it would be helpful if Barola was further declared/classified as say Light to medium bodied Barolas with ABV less than 14.5 ABV that exhibit soft tannins and do not have much of a bouquet emphasizing the balance and smoothness in taste and then classify the medium to full bodied wines with more pronounced tannins that are 14.5 or greater ABV that exhibit a more notable and evident bouquet that have more percent new oak while aging, say percent oak over 25%. By classifying further based on ABV, percent new oak, and pronouncement of bouquet and tannins, this further classification differentiation should limit the surprises when paying $40+ for a Barola that is not to one's liking.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Рік тому

      Hi, I completely understand what You mean. Unfortunately, if wine would be classified by style, I am afraid there might be more confusion. What for one is light bodied, for other might seem full and rich. The same for tannin - I am used to Nebbiolo tannin, most people would still find them very high and firm. If the label would state ‘smooth’ they would feel misled. 🤷‍♀️
      But thank You for the insightful comment, always great to read! 🍷

    • @spirestocksnotification6710
      @spirestocksnotification6710 Рік тому

      @No Sediment I realize preference for palate is highly correlated to age, and most associate Nebbiola with firm tannins but the most recent Barola I had, had basically no tannins, which I think most would ascertain; thus, as an attempt to correlate ABV and aging process specifics may give more insight, and, once any taster tries both side by side in a benchmark they can choose which style they prefer after classifying the threshold of 14.5 ABV and 25% new oak noting 20s to 40s aged tasters tend to like less dry and over 50s more dry noting there are always exceptions to the palate age "rule of thumb"

  • @tomerlandson2524

    Vietti is not a Barolo I would call affordable... At least not in Sweden... We have a very high alcohol tax here but wine is usually very well priced cause we have only one state own shop for alcohol and they buy in huge volumes which bring down the price and makes you able to fine some real gems here and there with vintages and everything... But Vietti is like 190$ here... Pira is like 32$ and Rivetto 48$ :P

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  Рік тому

      Oooo, wow, that is definitely not affordable, I agree! But maybe that specific wine is a single vineyard? Those can get very expensive, I agree.
      But, overall, yes, price You mentioned is not affordable in any way. 🥹

    Excellent selection! We live in Alba and run our Piemonte Wine Club subscription, focusing on Barolo and Barbaresco wines. 1) you should come see us and we should do a video together! 2) for everyone reading this and liking this video, check out our channel as well 🙏🏻🍷

    Bartolo Mascarello? Burlotto? Vietti? Rinaldi?

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  2 роки тому

      Are these the wines that You like and enjoy? All amazing producers, of course, in fact Vietti is one of the producers I mention in this video. However, except for Vietti their Barolos all are sold in 3-digit numbers. So for me, only on special occasion. 🤷‍♀️🍾🥂
