I was born in '77 and knew of the show for my entire life, thanks to mom and dad, who were in their early 20s at the time. I never really watched it until 2022, but I fell asleep watching something on Amazon and 'Barney Miller' was playing when I woke up. I was hooked and fell in love with it. I am so glad Amazon did this to me, lol!

I served 25 years on the P.D. and must say Barney Miller was the closest thing to the real life of the job.

I am so glad those three lines changed Hal's direction to acting because then we may never have even heard of Hal Linden. I always learn something new from your videos. Thanks Stephen!

Hal Linden really brought such wonderful humanity to Barney Miller. Great show, amazing ensemble. It never shied away from bringing realism into the sitcom genre the same way M*A*S*H, The Mary Tyler Moore Show & all the Norman Lear shows have done. It was the Brooklyn Nine-Nine before there was Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Mr. Linden deserves all the accolades. His strength & talents will never go unnoticed because he never forgot where he came from & how he first started. Glad to see him still alive & kicking at 93 years old. What a legend! Thanks Steve! 👍🏻 I have yet another fun suggestion for you. Would you please consider doing a "Whatever Happened To..." profile of Telma Hopkins of Tony Orlando & Dawn, Bosom Buddies, Gimme a Break! & Family Matters fame in a future video?

I was a fan of the show, but only because my mother watched it. I was young enough to get some of the sillier stuff but missed a lot of the more adult stuff. Watching as an adult made me appreciate the show on a whole new level and I am somewhat of a renewed fan.

Oh, yeah. It is one of the greatest opening musical themes in tv history.
    Great cast.

Best tv theme song ever. That bass line. 👮🏻‍♂️

It was so good! I have to think it influenced other theme songs that were heavily bass focused, such as Night Court, etc.

Hey, Stephen. How's it going? It's been a while since I last commented on one of your videos. Here are my insights about this wonderful actor right here. I have heard of Hal Linden before but little did I know that he played Barney Miller on the American sitcom TV series of the same name that ran from 1975 to 1982. The first time that I heard about Hal Linden was when he made a one time guest appearance on The Golden Girls in 1991. During the sixth season of The Golden Girls, Hal Linden had made a guest appearance by playing Dorothy Zbornak's former high school crush by the name of John Neretti who stood her up for her prom and he had finally reappeared by asking Dorothy out to dinner after all those years. The episode was called "What A Difference A Date Makes" and it was the twenty-second episode of the show's sixth season. Otherwise, I don't know much about Hal Linden but I am sure he is a great actor. It would be great if you can do some videos about The Golden Girls and what not. Great video as always.

Yeah. Oakland was a great character actor. Loved the way he and Darren McGavin would spar with one another on Night Stalker.

The question is what were those three lines? Nevertheless, it is great to see Hal Linden still active in his nineties.

The reason for no Grammys or other industry awards for Barney Miller? Barney was not produced by a studio. It was under independent producers. No heavy money for ads in industry magazines, little influence from the producers for nominations because they were a single program which mostly had network money and little else behind them. Nevertheless, the influence of Barney is felt. The door of the cage went to the Smithsonian.

I got this info from a Barney comment thread I read several months ago. It was brand new information to me as well and I felt sharing it spread a lot of info on how programs are produced, and how a show can be a critical darling and receive no awards! Linden was excellent season after season. Landesberg, Vigoda, Glass, Gail, Carey and Soo were amazing, entertaining and delightful throughout the show.

I would love to know that as well. He hasn’t said. Perhaps they’re forgotten, but he remembers that those three lines were key to his getting into acting.
