    Hey Zach, I own the JD800 also JD990 rack. Even when loading the adapter jD800 presets into my JD990, I still hear small differences. Owning old gear also comes with maintenance and preservation. Both usability and sentimental reasons, I’ll be holding on but, will be buying the Jupiter X and JD model expansion. Hope the transition to re imagined vintage gear will keep the flame alive.

    You keep saying "that 80s sound" but you do know that it released in 1991? To me, this sounds distinctly 90s and reminds me of all of those TV commercials and TV show themes, and of course some signature sounds from bands like The Prodigy.

    Honestly despite the reason why I am looking at these retro inspired syths which is to have a similar sound to my favorite pieces of media for my stuff... I like the JD-08 sound better then the JD-800! It's really "pretty" sounding compared to the gruff original... So I think it's a good fit for my stuff which was impsered by the old 80s/90s stuff but is brand new. So yeah thanks for the review and compairistion!

    The one thing I always thought would dramatically improve this synth: TONE PAN! It would relieve the muddiness and separate the sound.

    • @DocFirewire
      @DocFirewire Рік тому

      When you connect the JD-08 to your DAW, it outputs the tones on separate channels. You get: 1+2 = Stereo Mix, 3-6 = Tones 1-4, 7+8 = External input jack of the JD-08.

    I don't think this is a hard choice at all. If you want to create your own sounds - get the JD800 - The layout and the size of the interface is just perfect. If you want to play, multitrack and make arpeggios - get the JD-08 - the polyphony justifies that alone. The difference is sound is not much so different in a mix and it is a lot cheaper.

  • @12knn88
    @12knn88 7 місяців тому

    In general, the JD-800 sounds more appealing, but that may be due to the wonderful reverb quality of the built-in effects pedals. When sounding as one of the instruments in a multitrack, there is little difference.

    Is the jd-08 the same engine that you can get for fantom/Jupiter x? At 12:00 the difference is so apparent between the two

    So I just got the JD08 this past Saturday and I love it. Yeah yeah yeah it doesn't sound like the 800 but so what. It's close enough and I'm not butt hurt about it. I also have the JX08 and love that one too and next on my short list is the JU06. I have a gang of vintage and analog synths but what I like about these boutiques are the fact that they're portable, they sound good enough for my productions and they're stupid cheap. Don't hate appreciate !!! Cheers 🥂

      How you do the controls/keys? With a keboard or the underlaykey from JD08. And if you use a keyboard, what kind? And how are the connections between PC ableton/Keyboard and JD08

      @John vd Berg , The row of buttons you use to edit and choose sounds double as note keys. There's a button on the left of the unit that says "NOTE" Once you press it the buttons trigger the sound of the synth.

    Thanx for the video :) ! Great comparison . I wouldn't mind loosing the deep low end of the JD-800 by having a JD-08, while I have a Super JX10 (Vecoven PWM upgrade) for producing CRAZY MASSIVE low end sounds. I have one silly question : Can a JD-08 be used as a controller for the JD-990 ? The JD-800 can do it . Thanx !

      you can always tame brightness with a tiny touch of EQ when they complain about that kind of stuff. i swear most synth players have never touched an EQ and spend an unhealthy amount of time obsessing over the "warmth" or "sterility" of D/A converters.

    My Bluetooth earphones may be limiting the audio, but the JD-08 sounded the same to my ears, except for just slightly extended dynamic range. Boutique's recreation of digital synths sound very convincing indeed.
    They still haven't delivered the JD-08 that I ordered in December, but I look forward to compare the sounds with my JD-800 and JD-990.

  • @ohheyitskevinc

    The JD-800 is a great synth. I know as I own one. The main problems with the JD-08 are everything else. This is horrible and buggy. Waveforms 23, 28, 35, 36 (and probably more) are all transposed an octave lower than on the 800 for reasons passing understanding. Waveform 45 is an octave higher. The multi mode filter is.. nothing like the 800. There is no Multi mode. Onto Effects A and B.. all effects from A work with Part A, but Part B can’t access the Effect B group. The pdf manual (yes they’ve finally got one now) refers to a [SHIFT] button that I guess Roland forgot to add to the units. There’s a whine when using the analog output when USB (ie the power) is connected. So always use USB audio (or batteries). There’s a hidden monosynth lead sound when using a midi controller on channels 4 or 5. Random tones appear at the top end occasionally that go away if you release all the keys. Despite having 256 patch memories, Roland decided to only populate 99 of them rather than populate with the expansions (like they did with the D-05 boutique). Add to that - there is zero functionality between the JD-08 and the J-800 cloud synth (the 800 hardware and the 08 don’t communicate over midi as one is sysex and the other is cc). You cannot access any of the included (or paid for) patches they have on the J-800 cloud synth. This is so buggy and poorly thought through it’s basically useless - which is why I’ve reverted back to my hardware JD-800 and its now velocity sensitiveless keys, and the cloud version. Hopefully Roland address all the midi, effects, random tones etc. bugs, and address the lack of interoperability with the Cloud version specifically tone swapping between the two. I’ve given up on mine after 6 months of ownership.

    my 990 eats both. I sold the 800, the controls are great but it's the size of an elephant. the size of it doesn't live up to the sound. initially bought it for 700 and had to clean the red glue myself years later.. a terrible job. the 990 is having less issue with clipping filters and distortion. the effects on the 800 are a bit of a joke.. also editing the parameters of these was a nightmare. one of the things I also hated was that on most presets the eq settings were a bit off in the highs.. it always hissed.. the 990 kind of cleared all the issues and also has a much more defined tight sounding low-end.. on the 800 I generally found it muddy and a bit unusable.. it somehow had a bit more of a low fi tone that I liked... the 990 kind of sounds more contemporary and I managed to convert my jd800 presets via a card, loading them into the 990 and then exporting them again as syx for the 990. a clever trick. another reason I kept the 990 and not the 800 is the vintage expansion card.. any expansion would do in addition to the standard waveforms.. but.. the vintage expansion contains a lot of amazing synth waveforms that really activate a wide sound potential on the 990.. sadly the 990 remains a module.. and does feel less like an instrument.. both aren't perfect. for the jd800 I would have to move out a bed if I wanted it to fit back in.. meh. so Roland missed an opportunity, make the jd08 compatible with the jd990 so it can work as a programmer... people at Roland seem to be asleep and don't really pay attention, I wish they supported this.. any 990 owner would get a jd08 if it could act like a programmer ike the JD800 did for the 990, act like a programmer.. it's a matter of CC vs Sysex.. if both would be coded and supported via midi out..

      The JD-08 automatically assigns the last edited parameters to the 4 bigger sliders on the upper left corner, makes it bearable. But there also is a VST/Standalone Editor available for very little money which I personally prefer.

    As soon as it comes to explaining something specifically, like here in the video about the sound of the devices, you start to stammer and form unclear sentences. This makes it extremely difficult to follow for someone who is not an English native speaker. But that might not even matter, because obviously you're not sure yourself what you're talking about, are you? Sadly this is going through all your videos like a red line. Let me make this clear: YOU are recording videos for UA-cam to explain things, that people might want to know about. HOW can you go into this so unprepared and unstructured? Isn't that a shame?
