I have had a JX-08 for several months now and I love it. I have one other Roland Boutique, the SH-01A, which is superb also and I don't mind it only has 4 voices (the original had just one). What I like about my JX-08 is the sound first and foremost. Also sound design is simple and straightforward, as you would expect form an analogue (modelled) synth. It has quickly become my go to synth for pad sounds and what cannot be stressed enough is that you actually get tow complete synths for the price of one! Each of the two available parts you can play completely independently (on two separate MIDI channels). This is awesome. It means that with this single module you can add two completely independent JX synth tracks to your DAWless performances. Both parts have their own 64 step sequencer with full motion control too. Absolutely brilliant.
WOW The comments on here are intense. I will just say that I ordered the JX-08 before I watched Espen Krafts video, so he didn't influence my decision to buy. Also, for people who say that the PG-8X sounds closer to the original, I would disagree. I have it, and the presets I downloaded sound awful, and way too loud. I personally think that the Model expansion of the JX-8P for Zenology sounds the closest to the original, but thats my biased opinion and analog synth snobs will probably eat me alive for it. Finally, I got the JX-08 for the features, not for it to sound exactly like the original. I don't know of another bi-timbral 20 voice synth with a built in arpeggiator for less than $500. If I'm wrong, please correct me and let me know of some products. I love the JX-08(both the features and the sound), and I agree that it is the best designed boutique.
Let's not forget the Roland Boutique D-05 which is at least as good as the original D-50 as well :) so it's also one of the best if not the best Boutique to me. It has all available cartridges built-in and 16 voice polyphony.. I'll be pairing mine with the JX-08 soon and actually sold my JX-8P 😎
@@rachelar definitely! 3x that of the Boutique ;) with kiwi mod though... But the mod felt a little half-baked in some aspects so I was glad to get rid of it
I have been loving the JX-08. Sure it may not 100% nail the vintage mojo of an original, but to most of our ears it is close enough. It may be a zen softsynth in a nice controller, but it gives so much flexibility for it's price. Being able to sequence/control part A & B independently via midi is fantastic in itself. I've been using this in a small set-up with Novation's Circuit Tracks, and both pieces of gear fit snugly in one suitcase for gigging, and cover so much more sonic ground in less space for roughly the same cost of a used JX-8p.
Thank you for doing less arp work, it's pretty Important for me to hear voice layering and transients between notes. This does sound a lot more lush that the Jupiter x engine (legit was just playing my xm)
Great review 👍. I remember when I was aged 15 in 1987 and just getting into synths, I foolishly dismissed everything Analogue and was only interested in Digital. DX this and RX that! Anyway thanks to the rave scene in the early 90s, I discovered analogue and have been a long time JX8P owner since then. Really looking forwards to trying this Boutique out and as you say, it may well be one of the best so far (in my opinion, the JX03 was far more useful than the JP08 and JU06, out the original 3)
I got into synths with the Gary Numan/John Foxx/Human League wave of synth pop and was horrified by the sudden ditching of analogue in favour of digital with the DX7. Rave saved analogue and deserves enormous credit for that. However it did mean that by the end of the 80s my collection had expanded to a Jen SX1000, Moog Prodigy, SCI Pro-One and Juno 106. They were all stolen in the 90s. I have never gotten over that.
Can’t wait for the comparison. This seems like a much better value to me, as someone who has never had the chance to bond with the original… And I have far exceeded my space for more synths…
I owned both a JX8P and a JX10 both sold long ago. I now have a JX08 and think its a great little synth. The sync / cross mod isn’t the same for sure so the piano patch isn’t as good as on the JX8P. But it’s got the pads basses and leads OK. Plus you get 2x synths in the one tiny box so almost a super JX10. Worth buying IMHO 😊
Very good review . Having just listened to you playing the JX 08 via the big Jupiter 8 ( ? ) The JX 08 sounded balanced in the low mid and high frequency even rather warm and lush yet in your other comparison video playing via the original JX8P the low and mid frequency was lacking in the JX 08 Boutique . When listening to other video demos of the factory sounds they also sounded very impressive ! So maybe a speaker or an EQ thing or ? Anyway decided to buy it today ( I didn't go for the PG8X vst as I'm not really into software except for Korg M1 . 🙂🤔.
The best boutique, along w my D-05. Think I’ll sell the JU-06A due to polyphony limits. I have vintage boards as well. It’s all based on your tastes, everyone’s different. Good job Zach.
Yes it's great I was going to buy the JD 08 but after listening to the presets realised I am going to find this one a lot more useful. Is now my second boutique I have the juno one as well.
To me, the JD-08 is better, it sounds even richer than the original JD800 to me, like a portable JD990 (referring to Espen’s friend Anders Jensen’s video). The JX-08 may be good on it’s own merits, if you don’t want an exact clone of the JX8P. I think that you should always buy a synth because you like the sound, not because it sounds like another synth. For analog, I liked the ACB technology better though and would rather go for the System 8, even if I appreciate the new sequencer, USB-C-audio and increased voice count.
Tr-06 is the most interesting drum machine, jx-08 is one of the best among boutiques and it sounds beautiful in general by itself. But not all people are happy with it. Espen Kraft did very good and informative comparison, JX-8p is one of his fav synths, he personally loves JX-8p more.
I like the sound of the boutiques, Roland did good, not sure if this synth is for me though. I had a lot of the boutiques but sadly I had to sell many of them, they were just too small, in the beginning I would not accept it and thought yeah I am in it for the sound, doesnt matter, but I have to be honest, I need a bit larger gear and the hidden menus annoys me, I cant remember the settings in my head and I dont want to pull the manual each time I have to work on them. I have settled on the JU06A, SH01A and the SE-02. That's it. I dont think I need anymore of these. I was fascinated by the JX03 dual oscillator, but in the end, I found that it did a few sounds really well. Spend the money on buying a Nord A1r and a Nord G2. I would buy an Alpha Juno version if it ever comes out, 100%
Thanks, very helpful. I were not convinced by the Juno replica as I Have an original Juno 6, but as I'm going to have a moving life, I search these small versions with low power supply easy to integrate in a self made rack or box, with other analog synths, mostly Berhinger, low weight, low cost, also, that's letting me buying also the JD 08, not the same, but need those sounds also. I have a Jupiter 60, so this add layers to natural and classical instruments.
thanks for the review and demo. does it do mono legato besides glide ? and also, how many fx can be used in serial ? couldnt find that info in the manual.
i have been listening to many videos of this synt but here is the best sound of all. What is the secret?Sound card?Any way thank you!i am just enjoing the sound...
Does it have pulse modulation or the ability to do drone sounds like the Jupiter-6 & the Jupiter-8? Please forgive me if this question has already been asked. Dear UA-cam There should be a way to tag the most important questions to the top Thanks! And is there any talk about having a Jupiter line up for iPads and iPhones? I had a Jupiter-6 and need one on my iPad asap or this if it can do what Jupiter-6& 8 can do. Pulse modulation is important to me and complex drone sounds with cross modulation. Thanks again!
Can you tell how the Roland keyboard is connected to the JX-08 and if there is still possibility to connect on PC Ableton software? Because i think you only use the keys from the keyboard?
I have all the Boutiques and can say they are the best we're going to get from Roland. They are not the originals but Roland knows if everyone had them no one would. They will never reduce the value of their legends by releasing new true versions.
I hate you’re correct, the new Juno X is a zenology rerelease. They’re just going to make that the modern flagship. My only hope is they update the boutiques in a decade 🤣 like they’d ever.
The jx08 is just not my cup of tea. It's just too polite. It sounds like it is suited to a ballad singer backing from the 80s but not electronica. I have the Fa and this has an xv engine amongst others which sounds richer. And better than the JD too. I am sticking out for the proper analogs from Behringer. Which you need a lot of patience with waiting. Pro800 for me.
I have to agree. Feature-wise it may be the best Boutique so far. Though I personally prefer SE-02 from the perspective of the sound itself (and being analogue). Great job, Zach. Very entertaining and also stimulating for some good conversations.
The real JX-8p never sounded more alive than when I was comparing it to a Jupiter X. When you put this side by side with a real JX-8p you will hear this right away. This JX-08 also lacks TVF/TVA, dynamics sliders and a screen (that makes patch management simple on a real JX-8p). Today's Roland has no idea why their own originals are classics today.
What’s interesting is that the JX08 sounds quite a bit different than the Jupiter X JX8P section. Doesn’t make a lot of sense since they’re both based on the same engine but from what I can get out of Roland’s marketing material there are some new effect modeling in this boutique - specifically a lo-fi compressor and I think the jx8p noisy chorus…it really gives it a much closer and alive feeling than the Jupiter x version. Nothing beats the real thing tho.
Its a fucking shame, try to compare the real sound of a jx 8p,ahahahah when i see these subjets speaking about that they cant hear, and more Important, they are speaking about something they cant feel,i feel very afortunated, roland made a gem, human always trying to speak about something, with words, sometimes,u only have to feel, and there jx8p its unrrivaled
The dynamics switches are still in there. Okay not on a slider. You have to access them through the part menu. They are called p.vel, a.vel, f.vel and n.vel and their settings get saved per patch. It's not that big a deal to set them that way
