My Blog: dragonsarmory....
I want to state first that I did not animate the figures in the painting, that was done by the marvelous NPM 國立故宮博物院
Please check out their links and see their original videos below. These will be much longer, and without any audio.

• 古畫動漫─明人出警入蹕圖02 Paintin...
• 古畫動漫─明人出警入蹕圖03 Paintin...

In order to distinguish from their videos I have made sufficient editing changes as well as inserted music to heighten the sense of immersion for you all.
SUBJECT
The video depicts segments of the famous Ming scroll painting 出警图 "The Departure Herald" from the Jiajing reign period (1522-1566 AD); the painting shows the emperor's large imperial procession heading towards the imperial tombs of the Ming emperors located roughly 50 km north of the capital Beijing. The famous painting is currently housed in the National Palace Museum of Taiwan and could be viewed in detail here.
commons.wikime...
For more about the particulars of the soldier's equipment, please check out here:
dragonsarmory.b...
Encapsulated into both scrolls, the artists depicted the entire event over time and space from the departure, arrival at the destination, and return to the capital. The traditional means of viewing "Departure Herald" is from right to left, whereas "Return Clearing" is from left to right. "Departure Herald" represents the emperor riding a horse, taking land route from the capital, while in "Return Clearing", he is shown riding on a boat, taking a water route back to the palace.

Wasn't as great as Han or Tang dynasty, but still lovable. Can you imagine how will China be today if Ming dynasty managed to fend off the Shun rebellion and possibly the Manchurian invasion, and also regain popularity among the nation's subjects. China still under Han rule from 1644 until 1917? I bet she will be like Japan or UK today. Glorious and powerful.
Zennoix riel3620 It was manchu rebellion rather than invasion
@@northernpride8482 many han people today see it as an invasion
Zennoix riel3620 Because they were not well educated, us Manjus were Ming loyal subjects and ruled by Ming until 1616. Many wonder what the world would look like if the Roman Empire hadn’t fallen.
But I always wonder what it would look like if the Ming survived…
Chinese culture remains pure. They would’ve probably avoided the century of humiliation and advanced China to the level of the Europeans in the 17th to 19th century. Many lives would be saved from foreign invasions under their leadership instead of the Manchus’.
One could only dream 😢
It is an interesting possibility I do acknowledge that. What's more by the tail end of the dynasty they were ready to aggressively reform and modify themselves. If only we can see what it might have been if given the chance.
Seems that's where the joseon clothes come from

Mountain-scale armor, they never really found an actual suit that survived eh?
It's very hard to find, yes, especially an intact piece.
There are pieces of it and art depiction, even the materials are well written and the book that records all military stuffs are discovered. The Manchu hates the Ming so much to the point that all things that are created during the Ming are destroyed.
40-60% of the Ming army at the reign of Wanli-Chongzhen were armed with arquebuses, called niaoqiang or bird spear for their narrow barrel. Also, they had early shotguns and rockets.

Miss the good old times when China kept the traditions and pride
Kind of, I rather miss when they were very inward looking. But then again, they have to change with the times. I say that in a neutral manner because, well- the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries are speeding forward at a rather break neck pace.

their emperors are like 5% more larger than them
yeah, like the ancient Egyptians the Chinese practiced hierarchical proportions where by the more important people- usually Emperors etc are depicted larger. This is useful in paintings depicting wide vistas.
Truly a golden age for China
@andrewyuyoungearn2799 you're right too, I guess in China these dynasties are considered the cultural and historical Golden age. The ming dynasty, especially with its catastrophic downfall at its end and the two year war against the qing mandshu which they've lost (estimated 25 million deaths) however there's also good things to look at. I generally really like the cultural products of this period
Ming Dynasty Pussy got me acting unwise. -Confucius
It seems the Emperor’s guards were not equipped with fire arms at the late 16 century... Most elite troops are still the armored cavalryman.
明朝的主要敌人是蒙古人和满族人,只有在明朝后期有更轻便的火器才装备
Most weapon they held are not for a real war, but for ceromony or honor guards only. It is not a surprise. Nowadadys honor guards most equipped with early 20th rifle rather than a cutting edge battle weapon.
Maybe because cavalry is mings pride. As it is the most strongest force in mings military.

I wonder how the 2 handed cutting polearms were used tactically. They obviously take up the slot that could have been used for a lance. I guess it's for skirmishing instead of getting stuck in delivering shock. Use the reach of the polearm to get in a devastating swipe and then move on, similar to how one would use a curved saber. It seems only oriental agrarian empires use this with their cavalries. The mongols weren't known to be big users.
The people in this picture are not fighting troops, but the praetorian guard of the Ming emperor, which is more decorative than practical
@@张源-b1p Sorry, but I don't buy that they're just carrying huge slashing polearms on horsebacks around for decoration.
These cold weapons should be used for wild encounters. The Ming Dynasty also has a large number of muskets and cannons, but in the north they have greater limitations.
@Jimmy Xie Also, mongol lances often featured hooks. In order to make use of them to unhorse heavily armored riders, one must use 2 hands, making them 2 handed polearms as well.
Modern parades feature real battle field weapons in their usual configuration. You wouldn't spend millions into fake props.
There is a manual for using this sort of weapon, on horseback & foot, from Cheng Zi Yi in the late-Ming era. You can find it on chineselongsword.com. The claimed weight of 13-26lbs is a bit unbelievable though.

The saddast moment of the Chinese history maybe is that the fall of the last Han Chinese Dynasty…… Just like 1453……The fall of Constantinople... shared somehow similar fate...
Constantinople really fell when the Crusaders sacked the city during the 4th Crusade centuries before the Ottomans came. The Eastern Roman Empire was just a rump state and Constantinople was a shadow of its former glory by 1453. And if the Han Dynasty didn't fall when it did, we wouldn't have famous stories such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and we'd probably be left with a rump state that limped on for a few centuries as an extremely corrupt and ineffective empire that faded slowly into history.
Isn’t Han Chinese still incharge of the second greatest economy in the world right now? So not as sad.
@@Intranetusa They don't mean the original Han dynasty but the Ming dynasty, the last Chinese dynasty ruled by the Han Chinese people (The Qing ruling class were Manchu.)
@@kets4443 I see. Well, I'm not a fan of the Ming Dynasty so my sentiments still stand. The Ming Dynasty was somewhat xenophobic, backwards, and unusually authoritarian compared to most previous Chinese Dynasties. The Qing Dynasty gained power because the Ming Dynasty really screwed up at the end, and the Qing basically copied the Ming's governing style while repressing traditional Han culture.
