Hi Dustin, you’re representing Canada proud! I know this camera (EOS-R) has a lot of haters out there, but as an owner of it, the 24-105 and the 35R, I gotta say this is one of the most comfortable and easy to use kit I’ve ever had, loving it and having a blast shooting. Thanks for all your hard work, I’ll keep watching.
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your kit. I've been directing people stuck between a 6D2 and a 5DIV towards the EOS R - it's a natural fit in between.
Hi Rick. I have just bought this. I have noticed I can feel and hear a slight noise when i tilt the lens around. Like something is moving slightly inside. Is this the same with your lens? I just want to know if mine is not right. Many thanks.
All image stabilized lenses have a bit of movement inside, but I have not noticed anything unusual with my 24-105 or the 35mmR, other than the fact that they are both crazy sharp lenses. @@RossCorbett
a bit front heavy, (it's not a lightweight lens) but definitely manageable. I wouldn't recommend this set-up if you like to shoot "one-handed". I'm coming from an 80D and I would say the set up is very similar in weight and balance to what I've used before. Very comfortable camera. @@eliaspap8708
I've owned and used multiple versions of every EF 24-105 lens and now I have this one. I think they're just the best solution for a "do it all" lens when I'm traveling and not really looking for f/2.8 - they're honestly great lenses. However...this is the best one so far. The EF Mark II caught a lot of flak for not really being a massive leap in optical performance, but I think that the "good stuff" was saved for this optical formula because it's truly fantastic. Less distortion, less CA, better sharpness, lighter weight, faster autofocus...what else?! Great series of video on the lens. I look forward to the autofocus review because that's another area this lens destroys all other 24-105 lenses from Canon, Sony, and the 24-120 from Nikon.
Hi Dustin, have you had a chance to try the RF24-70? Without considering aperture, did you find much of a difference in image quality between the 24-105 and 24-70?
I haven't. I've had a bit of a frustrating time getting loaners from Canon Canada this year, as they shut down for COVID in march and I've been unable to get anything from them since.
Very good review Dustin, this lens paired with the EOS R delivers some cracking images, I love that you shoot real world photo's and don't use lens charts etc. Keep up the great videos and I look forward to upcoming reviews.
Hi Dustin, I’m not a Canon Guy. I’m sure this lens is phenomenal. Canon makes great glass . I’m a Nikon guy and you are my favorite lens tester hands down. I was wondering if you’d be testing the Sigma 28mm anytime soon? And if and when you do could you somehow test it against the Nikon 28mm f/1.4 e. I’m wanting one of these lenses. I don’t really want to pay the huge Nikon price tag but will if it’s the superior lens in focus accuracy and speed . Thanks man you’re the best and I appreciate all you do for us
Hi Troy. I will look at the Sigma 28, though it will probably be March because of my backlog. I won't be doing a Nikon comparison, though, as I just don't own Nikon bodies and don't review them.
Hi Tarek, while I make a bit of reference to that lens, it really isn't possible to directly compare them because they are for two different systems. You can't divorce the sensor differences from the IQ differences.
I've found your videos to be most educational and informative. I would wandering if you could answer but one question, do you find that lenses perform just about the same, regardless of the brand camera they are used with? So, would a good cannon lens produce equally good images on Sony cameras as they do on Canon cameras? Is a good lens a good lens even when it is used with a reasonable good adapter? Thanks DA, your videos are a valuable service to the photographers every where.
I do think that is pretty much the case. Some people theorize that glass from one brand is "tuned" to work with the cameras from that company, but I don't think that's true. There is variation in the way that color is handled even within brands. I've found that my good Canon lenses are also very good lenses on Sony. At the moment, however, I don't think there is a way to adapt this particular lens to Sony
Hi Dustin, I have just bought this. I have noticed I can feel and hear a slight noise when i tilt the lens around. Like something is moving slightly inside. Is this the same with your lens? I just want to know if it is normal or mine is not right. Many thanks.
Hi Ross, most all of the gear that I review is loaned to me, so I don't have it still on hand. That being said, it's not unusual for there to be little sounds in lenses - particularly if you shake them. Keep an eye (ear) on it, and if it worsens, return it or send it in for repair (While it is still under warranty!)
Hi Dustin I have the 24-105l V1 im looking to hopefully get the R5. WOuld this lens still be ok or the R5 pull it apart. also if replacing would you go 24-105 or 24-70 taking the 2.8 out of the equaltion. I shoot mostly landscapes
Another very informative review, thanks again. I do wonder how this lens compares to Sony's identical offering 24-105 f/4. I recently switched from a Canon 80D and several generation 1 L series zooms and I'm thrilled with the uptick in image quality. I just wonder how much is the lens versus the camera. About the only thing i miss is the touch screen and autofocus, I believe it was a tad better especially in video mode on the Canon but then again the Sony has so many better focusing features like Eye AF.
Thank you for this review. It's pretty obvious that light room corrections are a bit too much. Do you intend a head to head comparison vs the Sony FE sibling?
Not really - it's hard to compare lenses from two different systems as you can't divorce optical performance from sensor performance. Furthermore - it's kind of pointless. Neither lens will work on the other system, so it's not really a choice.
Hello Dustin, how are you? Wanna ask i have rf 24-105 native lens but want to switch with tamron 24-70 G2, is it worth it to switch, i never use before tamron 24-70 and not sure, im confused... what do u think about sharpness and focusing... i need advice thank u
The RF 24-105 is a good lens. The Tamron will give you an aperture advantage and a very mild sharpness improvement, but I would recommend renting or borrowing one to try before selling what you have. You need to make sure that it is a significant enough upgrade. Focus, for example, won't be as fast.
I don't think I would recommend that you make the exchange. Perhaps look at a nice prime lens to compliment your zoom to give you a wider aperture to play with.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks! I am waiting for canon to come out with a "landscape" (5DSR kind) camera. To decide if I should stick with them switch over to Fuji. If I stick to Canon, I will need to decide 70-200 vs 100-500. I have lower focal lengths for canon EF including modified MF / Leica R ones. My choice (if I stick to Canon) will depend on your 70-200 vs 100-500 review :-) Thanks for the review you do - very well done and informative!
Hi Dustin there was some talk about the 24-105L 2 having a resolving power equivalent of about 12 megapixels, any idea what the RF's is and is this something that should be a consideration especially if Canon look at releasing a high Megapixel Eos R
I don't know the answer to that question, though that figure seems low to me. I do think that Canon is releasing these RF lenses with higher resolution bodies in mind, and remember that the baseline here is 30 MP (EOS R), which is still the second highest resolution in Canon's lineup. You are starting with a higher baseline.
Hi Dustin , I consider about Tamron 24 70 F2.8 G2 with RF 24 105 f4L, so how about sharpness between of them from center to coner ? and how about color of them ? Would G2 Focus fast enough for event shooting ?
I haven't directly compared the two lenses, but they are both nicely sharp. The Tamron might have a slight edge at equivalent aperture values. As for focus speed, I actually haven't test the 24-70 G2 on an EOS R body, so I can't comment on that.
Having used both these lenses extensively, I think that is debatable, though it is hard to divorce the lens performance from the camera it's attached to. I think the Canon may be equally good (or even better), but the Sony a7R3 or a73 is the superior camera to the EOS R.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Just saw this now. I think one can say for sure though these new 24-105 zooms are probably the best made to date. Hopefully Canon will bring a better camera to the table for these lenses since at the moment the EOS R is the ONLY camera this lens can be mounted on.
You are using very poor subject for IQ review...on youtube it is almost impossible to notice the difference or get the feel of sharpness...please use resulution chart as other reviewer uses.
I completely disagree. Many of my tests have revealed features that those that just use charts miss. A two dimensional chart does a poor job of representing some real world issues in a three-dimensional world (micro-contrast, longitudinal chromatic aberrations, etc...). I've got a process that works for me and has consistently produced reliable results - results that are respected by all of these manufacturers that want to send me their new products for testing.
The brick wall test has always been THE benchmark for me to see pincushion or barrel distortion. Moreover the chosen one for the tests is light enough to see light fall-off in the corners.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Your tests are very real world, love that about them! Keeping the format consistent helps us make intelligent choices in regards to new lens purchases. The only thing I do wonder often is how much copy to copy variation exists within a lens model... in the past I tested some Canon L glass and the difference at times was huge.
