Glad you enjoyed the video! Finding good sized pine knots depends on older trees falling over and beginning to rot. Alot of the trees in my area get harvested before that happens. If you can find a piece of ground with old growth and for whatever reason it hasn't been logged many times those areas are treasure troves. Thanks for subscribing and welcome! Most of the time, they've been drying for years. I actually dont do a ton of hand carvings. It's worth the extra efforts dealing with the challenges to carve them! Thanks for watching!
Well just thought I’d tell you. Your video inspired me enough. I went rummaging through my collection I had one pine knot , been just laying there for several years. I started and completed one in record time for me ! Turned out really good too . Thanks
Thanks for the video! I'm trying to understand the difference between a simple branch and one that will become a pine knot filled with resin...😬 Have any branches been cut?
I don't cut the pine knots. I usually step on the branch and if the log is rotten enough for the knot to break loose, good to go. The knot is the part of the branch that was rooted into or submerged into the log. They usually do have a high resin content. I'm not sure if there are any factors that would cause certain knots to have a higher resin content. Hope this helps !
Great video. I really love how the resin in the pine knots leaves the wood looking almost like a wax figure when they are carved. I've only been carving about a year, but I know I want to try this. The wood just seems very interesting to carve. Now that I know what to look for, I'll have to go out and search the mountains. 😊👍

In the past I have found some root w o o d which was satisfying to carve, but it had too much rotted wood , and was tough to carve. Could you tell me what finish you use for the face of the carving ? Thank you for subscribing, and thanks for the kind words.the product is made by minwax. It's called antique oil finish, and it comes in a red can. I found it at an out of the way hardware store. I've never seen it anywhere else, but I bet you could order it online. It's more of a rubbing urethane than an oil. I flood the surface of the carving and then wipe it off with a soft cloth. It takes many coats, but the resulting sheen is worth the effort. Hope this helps
Usually if I live in the woods would even drive in the truck and me as a craftsman I know I would have something to cut that damn thing opposite of smacking it with a sledgehammer., or is it you have to bust it off for a look
By pulling it out the natural grains and patterns of the wood stay intact. The hair and beard of the carving are worked so they melt into the grain. Sometimes it's saw time, but sometimes it's hammer time
I linked a few videos in the description that show a little more "how to" I do have plans for some deeper instructional videos for future release. You might be surprised how much artistic ability you have once you start pursuing it. Creative process like many endeavors is to a great degree a developed skill. Takes time and practice. Thanks! I use a minwax product called antique oil finish. It comes in a red can. I found by chance at an out of the way hardware store. It's the only place I've ever seen it, although I bet you could order it on-line. It's more of a rubbing urethane as opposed to an oil. I put it on and then wipe it off with a soft cloth. It takes many coats, but I feel the resulting sheen/finish is worth it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching
I pick these up all the time on my walks through the 100-acre wood out back of here. They're somewhat rotted. Are these worth anything to someone? I'll happily pass them along for one carving in return.
I've not heard of anyone selling pine knots personally. I am able to get them fairly easily. Woodcarvs who live in an area where pine knots are not available may be interested in purchasing one to have it shipped as something unique to try maybe? People who live in desert areas or city for example. I occasionally purchase cottonwood bark and have it shipped because I can't get it locally and it's fun to carve

I thought you were going to teach me to carve because I have no artistic ability nor do I know how to carve.
