There are problems with any country you go to, but Bulgaria stole my heart.
About the customer service- I actually like that aspect because they dont have to keep a smile on their face to keep their job (you might emphasize more if you've worked similar jobs in the past). It makes me feel more comfortable as well because I dont have to fake a smile either.
I've had a lot of shocking and confusing culture shock moments, but I took the time to understand and most of it was positive- so much so that I plan to live there eventually.
Although, yes, the animals and lack of funding and general attitude, mostly among the older population, when it came to strays was pretty horrible. I do understand that the reason a lot of other countries don't have as many strays is because they're euthanized. Either these animals die or they roam.
Regardless, I've witnessed a lot of horrible interactions with animals there, but the people who do those things are not very common. I've seen a lot of good, too. For example, I stayed outside a shop with a severely dehydrated dog trying to give it water, and people passing by would give what they could. Two women and a guy stayed with me until the dog was able to walk around. I've also seen people just adopt strays off the street and take them home, or give whatever food they have on them. People leave water dishes out, or mini shelters, or cushions. Restaurants/shops sometimes wont shoo dogs/cats away, and often allow them to live around there, giving them leftovers and putting out a bed or something comfy for them to lay on. There's a lot of people who care.
I was also shocked at how honest people are, and genuine. You dont really worry if the person is being fake as much as you would in North America or the UK- you're not stuck in a what I can only describe as a 'cusomer-service-like' conversation- you get this in any society but I find that Bulgarians are more willing to have real conversations with you, plus they're usually very up front if they don't enjoy something. The friends I have are life-long.
Another shocker was how much time workers get off in comparison to Canada- although Canada is pretty horrible for paid vacation days or even just sick days. You get treated like a living person in Bulgaria, not just a worker. You dont need to break your back or destroy your health. Also, sometimes companies have slips that are given to employees which can be used to pay for food or groceries- that was crazy to me. I'm not saying its the best in to world, but its certainly luxury in comparison to the US and Canada ffs.
Oh, and healthcare is affordable, fast, and good quality (yes, do your research, blah blah blah, but its very easy to find amazing and accessible healthcare). You don't need to wait months to see a specialist or weeks to get simple bloodwork. Dental also doesn't cost you an arm, a leg, and your bloody soul- so that's nice.
Yeah, there is a lot of corruption, it is what it is. The sidewalks and roads also suck. There's a lot of commie blocks. You might not get someone who speaks English (you're in another country, I think it's unfair to have that as a standard- plus strangers are very willing to translate). You cant order takeaway when you're in a village (why would you..?), but I guarantee you will find a Babushka running a little banitsa stand using what I can only describe as pure wizardry to make such delicious cheesy goodness. I dont recommend if you have celiac/lactose intolerance like I do (although its kinda- dare I say- a little bit worth it at least once); which reminds me of another negative; its horrible finding allergy-friendly food if you have a lot of allergies- but it's still possible. I mean, I survived, and still got to try a lot of delicious foods. Plus, my boyfriend can COOK- I love his cooking and I miss it so much. Also, my best friend who struggles with allergies would make things for me or give me lots of recipes

Hey, hi from one Bulgarian girl here. Amazing observations, very interesting comment. Thank you, I appreciate an opinion from foreigners, sometimes it is very useful to see the reality from others perspective.
For example the health care system, we Bulgarians complain so so much about our very bad health care, but in fact after getting to know some other countries health care, it seems that ours is pretty OK even it is quality and not so expensive for us. Foreigners even find it cheap.
Are you from the US or Canada?
I have traveled around and been to the USA and for me it was a bit of a cultural shock there too.
Especially this fake smiley attitude everywhere. Now I respect the honesty people in Bulgaria still have. We tend to copy a lot from the Western culture, but we still have our unique character 😊

I am Bulgarian and for the dogs and cats I can confirm that I know many families who adopt animals from the streets. I am taking care of three dogs which are former strays.
@@fiumebenson3714 , I also agree with most you are saying, but, please do not compare all Eastern European countries to be mentally like Russian. Please, do not. Bad service is a result of communist regimes, where there was such deficit in goods that, no matter how rude the sales person was you would still buy what you had to ( you've been lining up for hours sometimes for whatever was available). You could not even think of complaining about service in restaurants, it would make no difference, people would not be fired from their jobs for poor performance, because communism was suppose to look great, and you never knew if you would dismiss from work somebody's relative or friend. Many waiters even today don't care to smile and be polite, their grandparent, parents were not serviced properly, you don't know if they are not hired "under the table", if they were paid what they were promised, or even if they were paid at all! Why would they care if you come back as guest, the less people the less service to do. They also know costumers are not so "demanding" I usually go to a restaurant that has good food, pretty much nothing else matters, because it will take years and generations for the mentality to change. Take care.
O, what a surprise, in Bulgaria, you have to speak Bulgarian for everything?! Really? This statement stated from a Bulgarian lady is hilarious! Every county has its official language for a reason. What language you speak in rural Albania, Norway or Spain????? Do they speak Hindi or Arab???

Not to mention 80% of Bulgarians under 45 speak English and 50% of them speak a third language. 😂

@@ia3078 And those that are over 45 and can´t speak English, know Russian. It´s either one type or another, some rare cases know even both languages. And there is not so little amount of people that know either German, French or Spanish to some extend.
@@MihailParshin true. Not to mention there are hundreds of thousand who speak Turkish and Roma. Bulgaria is a multi lingual hub. Crossroad for empires as I like to say.
hello, I want to tell you something about cleanliness in Bulgaria, many people say that the streets are dirty and there is garbage
because I have lived in Brussels and in Dusseldorf I can tell you that in Bulgaria it is cleaner than in these two cities, I am currently in Dusseldorf here everywhere it smells of urine and it is dirty

New alphabet and language are my biggest hurdles, fortunately my wife is Bulgarian and helps with all things administrative. My heart belongs to the Bulgarian people, seeing them do what they do with so little and still managing to remain satisfied for the most part simply blows me away. Couldn't find that in USA (27 years) or Germany (41 years), 3rd times the charm.
It is trick yes, and definitely helps to have a Bulgarian wife

That mexican girl spoke so much but didn't say anything. I am also mexican and live in Bulgaria since many years ago. My husband is bulgarian so I try always to balance both cultures, my shock going the first time 20 years ago it was to take off my shoes before entering the houses and of course the amount of WONDERFUL FOOD they serve and insist you to keep eating 😆.

Oh and about customer service it is absolutely TRUE 🤣 some people act like if they were bothered because you came into their stablishment, but I THINK it is because they are afraid to speak another language 🤷♀️ could be.

What a culture shock! In England, a country younger than Bulgaria, they don't speak Bulgarian, how does that sound to you?
As a Bulgarian, I can tell the girl from Mexico lives in Sofia, ppl there tend to be like that. On a local scale we even have jokes for one another and people are different depending on the region.

The Rakia in Bulgaria is much better than the Raki in Turkey. More like a 2.nd class Grappa. Made from grapes, like the Tsipuro i Greece.

I have a mixed bag of feelings about this because I was both about to laugh and cry simultaneously listening to the different stories. As a 100% Bulgarian, I keep encouraging culture shocks with our local administration and we ourselves find it hard to comprehend some of the absurdities. Other than that, it’s nice to hear that the general impression for us was that we’re friendly even though we might be suspicious at the beginning

I live in Bulgaria and my biggest problem is the language.
Everyone I come across want to practice their English. Lol
But that is not really a big problem I kown the alphabet and numbers, so I can read and count. That is a good starting point.
The best thing to do is to mix with the Babas and Diyados
with excuses to the woman at 3:00 but that is called perky/cheeky not friendly. If some random people aproach me randomly started talking random stuff to me that would be so uncomfortable. On the other hand pretty sure if u would ask any1 for direction/help as long as they can communicate with you on some language or even just hand gestures, they would be more than happy to

A lot of people say that the shaking head and nodding is always inverse isn't 100% accurate, yes we do have our nodding and shaking a bit mixed, but it isn't as simple as just "the opposite" Like if I think about it, if someone asks me a straight yes or no question, I'd usually nod down for yes and up for no (although I might sometimes shake it too), but if it's for example someone's speaking of an experience and I'm like "nodding along" with the conversation I'd agree by shaking my head. So IDK exactly what's the deal there, but it ain't as simple as inverting them.
For me personally, the way I "shake" my head is more like the way they do it in India. It's not a straight left-to-right, but a bit more complicated movement. I also use the western way sometimes because I've lived abroad and watched movies...
Either way it’s very confusing when you first arrive, but you get it in the end

Thank you for researching and publishing that video! It’s lovely to see foreigners staying in Bulgaria beyond the summer or winter holidays, and people of Bulgarian ancestry spending time in the “old country”. While Cyric and the orthodox church traditions preserved national identity for the past 13 centuries is potentially a challenge for European and World integration. At some stage, your strength becomes your weakness. Let’s hope that joining Schengen will simplify the immigration process. Who knows, perhaps as Germany, Bulgaria might consider adopting English as the second administration language.

It's very interesting for me why some of these so "shocked" people aren't shocked by our aintient cuture. Why do they live in our blessed country, in which there is everything - mountains, sea, good climate, cheap life for them?
I think you may of missed the point of the video, and the true feelings of the people in it
I have lived in 5 different countries. My biggest culture shock, as a Bulgarian, that in not one of these anybody spoke Bulgarian, especially the administration. They also didn't speak English either, except in the US! There is no food delivery to any of the villages!
Bulgarians are not morons! They don't need education to know that smoking is bad. They just CHOOSE to ignore it and to ignore your concerns about them smoking!
Those texts that popped out at the beginning and all that with that effect and all was just really bad. Otherwise, good video. I really recommend going through YT on how you can make effects work better with text. Font was also poor.

Hey I am Bulgarian in origin actually and yet I have a culture shock in Bulgaria. So I stay up all night, this one particular night, not all the nights, playing and watching video games on PC. In the morning I feel motivated by an in game success and I decide to go buy myself some Baked Chicken, Cigars and Coca~Cola to ~celebrate you know... I am fairly new to the neighborhood I currently live in and also Covid changed a lot of things permanently for all, so I didn`t knew since around what time there will be a batch of actually baked Chickens to be purchased. Because you can check when the place opens online, but you cannot know how long it takes em to start the gas heaters, stab the steel chicken baking rolls with chickens... for the chicken itself to get well baked, etc.
Anyways so I go to the nearest place, because I am somewhat underslept and thus not within the fullest of my attention and observation capabilities to go somewhere else with like ~my car (I could, but also ~a walk, why not) And I ask (after I have already selected my choice and paid the automated display machine cashier) while my chicken is being packaged, in the purest Bulgarian I am capable of as someone bread and born in Bulgaria "So ~around when do you have your first ready to be sold batch of baked chickens" and the female packaging my chicken looks at me with an intense "I don`t actually speak this language look" and is like "Processing"... her way older also female colleague come and "gives an ear" to what is going on. At this point it gets way to complicated for underslept me and I am like ~ "I Shouldn`t have asked, I shouldn`t have asked"... But ultimately we reached some form of understatement.

I totally agree about the homeless animals in the streets ( breaks my heart) and the crazy amount of smoking. The smoking is truly shocking to me. People loose their teeth due to smoking excessively. Bottom teeth literally melt away. Shocking to see this in good looking women and men. Absolutely sad and apparently very well accepted among chain smokers because it's so common in heavy smokers.

Well expecting to be open with the first met person (not actually met in my opinion) and start talking for you, your life and such is a bit of a stretch in my opinion ;)
Oh and! Don't try first to speak our language, this is a mistake! First learn how to write. Once you teach the alphabet and how it sounds, teach simple words from your every day life. Align them in order and the people will understand you. The more you write and speak your words and sentences, the more easy it gets teaching how to talk. As an extra, sit alone into a random tavern and focus on the conversations. This way you will uncover the dialects. Forgive me if there are mistakes in my english, i tough myself only from reading and watching movies, never touched a lesson book. Enjoy! ❤

I'm always entertained by Hispanic people's ability to speak Bulgarian with no accent whatsoever.
For me is a culture shock to see a dog living indoors fed unnaturally and looking so unhealthy treated as a spoiled child. Those pet dogs completely lost their instincts and senses and because of lack of movement were with disfigured bodies. It is like slow torture, deprived of their natural environment and activities. In the past dogs were used as helpers of hunters,shepereds and as guards. They stayed outside. Those egocentrics who brought them inside houses, apartments for me are very cruel people ,selfish people disregarding dogs nature. If you do not have a big yard and job for the dog please do not torture them. In this sense, a street dog life is much better than dog-prisoners.

@@ATasteofBulgaria I was shocked when I first visited the UK after Iron Curtain failed from very poor Bulgaria. Sorry for the example but even the excrement of those prisoner dogs did not look like dogs but like humans. All dogs I had seen looked much healthier than I saw. And those people who know only dogs torture and imprisonment judge others. This perverse fashion came into Bulgaria and spread so much.

Fed "unnaturally"? Dear lord... You do realize the fake dog food exists for no more than 40 years and it's far more artifiicial than the human food they ate for thousands of years next to the humans. My dog eats everything I eat no questions asked. Cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, chicken, pork, bread. She doesn't care. As long as I eat it she ears it and kicks the bucket with "dog food" when I serve her such.

For the lady who said it's "sad there are so many street animals"...why do you think you can't find them in say America? In japan for example they've literally gassed dogs under the excuse to prevent rabies and some people claim India has so much rabies because they don't kill their street animals. Even rich place like dubai used to have plenty of stray cats...

hihi,we are very old nation and realy heve many tradicions,kukeri,Nestinarstvo(firewalking),Surva,baba Marta,Trifon Zarezan even bulgarians,dont know all of them.We know,we are mix between thracians,scytho-sarmatians,huns and slavs,here from were our tradicions come from hihibtw Bulgaria,for slavic peoples,are like latins,for the West,coz slavic alfabet is bulgarian alfabet,made in here,for bulgarians and spread to the slavic world,Old church slavonic is Old Bulgarian,common peoples still can understand allmost all of it,and slavic literacy and clergy start here,to hihihi,but old empires didnt want peoples know this,they try,to exsterminate us almost 700 years,and still continue in North Macedonia and in Rusian federation,were they didnt give permitions,to call themselfs Bulgaria and bulgarians,they call many of them tartars,but know about Kazan and Bolgar,they try,but cant delete real history so easy,bulgarians are in all parts of the world now hihihi

Нормално е в България да се говори български, служителите в държавната администрация и в магазини и където и да отидете са длъжни да знаят само официялния език който е български. В България има много националности и ако трябва да знаят някакъв друг език то на първо място е езика на няой от тези националности, Турска, Ромска(Циганска), Арменска, Еврейска, Гръцка, Румънска ..... Когато аз българина отида в западна Европа или в Америка да не би някой да ме обслужва на български? По каква причина дошлите в България чужденци изискват да ги обслужват на друг език освен българския? Защо вие латиноезичните страни се смятате за черешката на тортата? Уважавайте населението езика и традицийте на страната в която сте отишли и не се опитвайте да налагате собствените си разбирания за живота. На Мексиканката искам да кажа- това за което Вие говорите си е чиста проба лицемерия според нашата култура и традиций, нашата усмивка и приятелски чувства се пазят за близки хора роднини и приятели, защо искате да ви се усмихвам като идиот, и въоще не сме свикнали да приказваме празни приказки да разказваме автобиографията си на всеки срещнат, ние също сме приятелски настроени и помагаме на непознати в беда но без лицемерие а при вас само лицемерие и когато нещата допрат до помощ в повечето случай всички се дръпват и оставаш сам.

@@loniivanova8667 These people were asked a question and they gave an answer. Them struggling with something does not indicate what their expectations were. You can have realistic expectations and still need time to adjust. Also, no one said that we need to CHANGE our food, alphabet, etc. They just said it's DIFFERENT to what they are used to, which is why they needed time to adjust. Different doesn't mean bad. I love Asian food, but I also can't handle eating it too often. That doesn't mean that I'm telling them to change their food...

It was annoying that some of the people from the video were barely speaking English (like A 1 level) and they were complaining that Bulgarians do not speak English... May be the Bulgarians they met needed subtitles in order to understand their something like English language. On the other hand, I am sure that in general in the villages (not touristic) anywhere in Europe people speak only their native language. So I really do not understand what they were expecting and again - annoying.
Going around smiling all the time, and to strangers, makes you look fake...

When I first visited Bulgaria, I was shocked to see so many empty and dilapidated houses. I was shocked by the poor quality of the roads too and couldn't believe that Bulgaria is in the EU.
Lastly, yes I was surprised to see how unfriendly Bulgarians are, especially for people working in customer service roles...
Yeah EU took our economics out and more than 3 milion bulgarians left their houses and started working in the biggest EU countries (with strongest economics). Our government doesn't give a damn about the small roads. Te bigger roads are better because everyone sees them and can say a good word for those who build them. Nobody sees the small roads so no repair for them. Our customer service is not the best I can agree with you.

And I am shocked how they are by ultimatums banning Republic Macedonia with veto for EU membership .
They do not have sensibility to make reasoning that you can join EU if you have fulfilled the stipulation of the Aliance as whole , not because of frustration of Bulgarian and regret about Great Bulgaria on three Seas .
They put an ultimatum for macedonian to confess that that they are by origin Bulgarian because in the history of bulgarian time all of macedonian had Bulgar consciousness .
Oh my God but they had Greek Roman ,Ottomn, Serbian by time too !
Just emagine how big political trouble they are bringing into EU.

On Internet with quarrel who is first in some history parts , and who was Greater Cristian or first Slavian by origine .
I cannot say that they dont have cultural values and tradition but great percentage of population is lake you are in Othoman time stuck .

Especially the rural parts .
They are stuck in Midle ages time too .
All this is because of long colonial time of South Balcan. To much migrants are crossing in their first stop here , on going to North .
If they are more progressive migrant they are managing to go to North Europe, but the unproductive are stayin in this undeveloped pars of Europe .
If the country is not populated with homogeneous population of ( let say ) similar one or up to two cultures , the country is going to disaster .
And again emagine how they are kind of one national country without majority of Bulgarian .
What the name of the country is Bulgaria if Tatars came in small quantity to grab territory of Roman Province Makedonia .
Population was determined as Macedonia by the Greatness of Roman time.
With all its Renesainse in Roman and common Slavic culture not Bulgarian or Serbian who were usurpers of theritory only when Macedonia was left without custady after Ottoman time .

Bulgaria my country is a wonderful country with beautiful nature and great sights, but unfortunately the politicians who rule it are corrupt and incompetent, and Bulgaria is a member of the European Union and this is a shame and a disgrace to those who rule it. @@rosamafia изглежда, че по принцип си права. Но все пак, добре е човек да има усет в какво греши и да се стреми да го оправи, така се подобрява обществото и държавата. Другите страни също имат проблеми, за които споменаваш, но имат и достойнства, които в България не са добре изразени. (Например в САЩ бюрокрацията е минимална и хората (в Калифорния например) практически никъде не пушат цигари. В Япония пък не полицията, а вътрешният срам на хората, ако са направили нещо грешно, поддържа добродетелите в обществото им на сравнително високо ниво. Това са мои лични наблюдения).

Compared to latin Americans we are COLD people - Fact. Compared to Western Europeans, we are warm people - Fact.

I will answer to all the people in short, becouse i am a bulgarian man and i deal with many foreign students from the Erasmus program. 1. The roads. They are not safe, becouse the people who teach you to drive are actually assholes who rip you off with 1200 lavas and they teach you only like a month. So be vigilant! 2. The bysecles. They are not cheap, that's why they are absent. Like a new one cost you a moth salary. 3. To the Mexican woman. When you grow up into Bulgaria and you are a normal person you acquire a slave wage that is barely enough to survive if you are a woman with 1-2 kids; Smyles are absent, becouse as a bulgarian your boss basicaly whip you almost every day, working overtime for no money. You basicaly don't have A LIFE, that's why they look cold and angry, they are tired of being a human. 4. Why you struggle to talk with them? It is becose you are realy beautiful, with fresh character. Most of the men will not have the balls to even stay turned at you when you smile at them. 5. Friends. If you acquire a bulgarian friend, you aquire your own second shadow. The most precious friends. So don't hesitate to bring someone of them in Mexico, they will love you even more. My culture shock when moving to Bulgaria was dealing with the absence of Fish 'n' Chips.
I mean... this country is in NATO. (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).. but no North Atlantic fish anywhere. No haddock, cod or pollock. It's just river fish here. So why are they in NATO? Crazy!
Go to the seaside. It's only sea fish there.
@@ivanpetrov5185 I've been... mostly Hake as the sea is too warm ans shallow. There is no Ocean here. You can't find Pollock, Haddock or Cod as they are deep cold water fish only found in North Atlantic and North Pacific (Alaska). What's the point of being in NATO if you can't buy North Atlantic Fish?
@@janedoe6350 We have Tsatsa which is the best fish in the world. NATO should beg us to give them our Tsatsa as they don't have the luxury of having this fish in the Atlantic.

@@janedoe6350 I challenge you! Had the NATO countries had Tsatsa they wouldn't have promoted some low level fish like Tuna or Salmon. Unless there is some kind of conspiracy and the Norwegians keep the Tsatsa for themselves and offer the plebs some Salmon.
