Wonderful video! One thing people need to understand is that sound phobias can happen at any age. Your dog may be fine with fireworks for years, then suddenly ISN’T. It’s best to catch these situations early. This prevents the dog from worsening their trauma and makes exposure therapy so much faster and easier (think of if as having less baggage).
I had a real-life example: My dog heard the ice cream truck pass in our court. He ran through the house peeing as he went. After a lot of work, he became an ice cream truck seeking - he was like a child in summer seeking a cool sugar fix on an especially toasty Fry-day!
My dogs react to animals on the tv. It’s gotten to the point where one starts going over threshold when I pick up the remote. I’ve been picking it up and putting it down to decondition her to the remote, and trying to distract her with treats when she sees or hears animals on the tv. It’s slow going. The younger dog gets over excited, and will turn around and nip at the older dog. She can quietly watch the tv if she doesn’t see or hear any of her triggers (animals, animations, hairy faced men, bushy hair, fur coats, feather boas). The older dog sleeps through most tv, except when there are horses or barking dogs. They ignore concert videos.
That sounds so stressful, and tv time is supposed to be relaxing 😂 I would try working with them separately, condition the visual clips with sound off, then slowly add in sound and increase volume!
My dog reacts to the TV too! I watch a lot of zoo and veterinary shows. She will sometimes react to animals that come up on the TV and try to fight them. Which means she charges at the television. She doesn't seem to care that she has absolutely no chance against a tiger or a hippo.
Thank you! I'm going to be releasing another video in May (with Louie) showing how I progress this training outside. Louie was really reactive to dogs barking at him on walks, so we worked through that. The same premise would help your dog with traffic & such 🙂
Thank you for this. I recently discovered your channel, you have such good content! I do have one question about noise sensitivity. My dog barks whenever he hears another dog bark outside when we are in the house. I am intending on using the method in this video, but how do I best react when other dogs bark in real life and my dog reacts? I try to limit outside noises but it can not be prevented completely.
Thanks, glad you're enjoying my channel 🙂 I've actually filmed two window reactivity videos (one to sights outside the home, one to sounds) that should help you a lot, but unfortunately will likely take me a few months to release since baby is due any day now. Suggestion in the mean time: if you have a wireless speaker it's SO helpful to place it outside on your deck and do this same noise conditioning but with the sounds (such as barking) coming from outside your home!
@@happyhoundsdogtrainingYes I have one and that’s exactly what I intend to do. I just don’t know how to react when my dog barks when the conditioning is still ongoing. Looking forward to those videos! I hope everything goes well for you and your baby!
Thank you, this was great and such a clear explanation. I’m going to try it with my dog, we need to work on thunder, fireworks, the vacuum cleaner and maybe dogs barking would be a good idea as well… I’m going to try it with motorbike sounds too, hoping that it helps with her reactivity issues. Looking forward to the next videos you have planned!
Glad it was helpful! Conditioning the sound of dogs barking & motorbikes indoors will definitely help if she reacts to those 🙂 I'm going to upload another video featuring Louie in May about his reactivity to dogs barking at him. I'll show how I increased the difficulty & transitioned the conditioning to outdoors training too. If you've already worked on sounds indoors you'll be 50% of the way there!
Any ideas on training with thunderstorm/fireworks? My dog is scared of them but I can't replicate the real thing. She knows videos are fake and doesn't react at all to those.
Oh interesting! I’ve had clients have success with fireworks/thunder with this. Would you have opportunities to take your own audio recordings of both sounds? I’m also wondering if it’s your phone speaker quality that’s not imitating the thing fully. A higher quality wireless speaker placed outside your home (during sound training) might make it more like real life rather than the sounds coming from indoors too ☺️
Awesome video, and looking forward to your content on fear! My dog is scared of horse sounds and the vacuum (classic) though i initially tried to build a positive association. Funnily enough, she's fine with fireworks.
Thank you! Great advice, as always :) My dog can’t stand the noise that old train brakes make (I totally understand, it’s an awful noise!), but we want to travel by train sometimes. Fortunately at our train stop, we can check if the train will be a newer or older model, so we can take only silent trains with her, but at a bigger station we can’t avoid it. Hopefully I can help her with your conditioning tips!
Is your neighbour willing to do some training? If not, it's unfortunately going to be tricky for you to change much 😞 Normally I'd have the dogs guardian start working far enough from the fence (with the dog on leash to start) to keep the dog under threshold, then use high value rewards to start counter conditioning a new response. In theory taking treats from your wife could also change the dogs response to her, but that gets complicated when it's someone else's dog and you might not have permission to feed the dog.

Great point!! And yes, so much better to address issues as soon as you notice them. I always say "let's not let this gremlin grow" 😂

Ah, I see! I'd search for videos on how to train a "quiet" or "thank you" cue to turn off the barking when it does happen during conditioning 🙂

Can u suggest how to get my neighbors dog to stop barking and attacking the fence when my wife is in our back yard?
Is your neighbour willing to do some training?
