  • Why does someone LOVE fish keeping then quit the hobby? How can you be so passionate about something and then just walk away? I had my guesses but I was way off. Let's talk about why people walk away from keeping fish (and what can sometimes bring them back).

I have been keeping fish for 39 years. No breaks. A heater cooked one of my aquariums early on, so I have been keeping goldfish ever since. No heater.

I first started keeping fish when I was in my late 20s. Within 2 months I had 4 tanks. I did for 8 years while moving to Seattle and back to Denver. I was out for 14 years and what brought me back was when I rented my condo to a tenant that moved in with a Betta. I saw the Betta and remembered how much I missed having fish and how much I loved them. Now here I am with 10 fish😮 tanks. I have MTS and the only reason i don’t have more tanks is that I have run out of flat space!

I was out of the hobby for around ten years or so with moving around and the family thing, then we got the kids a ten gallon and it snowballed from there. I purchased three Peacock cichlids last week and within three days all three died, turns out our water had a chloramine spike and I didn’t catch it till it was far too late. That was like a kick in the shin with a steel toe boot, you have to take the good with the bad and sometimes bad things happen, but not as much as the good things👍👍👍

I got my first Aquarium when I was 5 or 6. (1980, 81)It was a 3 gallon. My first fish were Moore's. Ebony, and Ivory were their names. Moved up to a 10 gallon eventually. With angel fish which got too large for the tank around 8th grade. So my parents bought my brother's old tank from him it's an oceanic hexagon (He is the one who sparked my interest in the hobby when I was little.) I had this tank til I was 30 years old.. I have had it back now for about 7 years. I am 49 now. At 30 I had moved and put my fish in a smaller tank not using the Hexagon. My brother inquired about it, so he took it for about 10 years. Upgrading to a new glass. Which started leaking last year so currently using the old glass he had saved. ( I have about thrown in the towel in the last few years bc in the past I have never had issues with my fish the tank had always stayed clean without literally any maintenance... But his angel fish had fry. The angel fish started eating the fry and the other fish because they had gotten so big. This is when the tank took a turn. The angel fish passed away eventually.. after they had fry the levels were so off. Currently I have having a lot of algae issues for several years. Which I have never had. I believe it is these new LED lights. My old hood light is brittle but it still works but I can't find the light bulb size anywhere 😂.. so I bought new fish bc I only have had guppies 2 guppies, and a neon for a year and they were doing great! Til I bought 3 new fish on June 7th.. all 3 are dead now along with my neon. 4 died yesterday 1 day before yesterday. so at this point I'm frustrated again. I thought all the fish were dead. I was ready to break down the tank and say well #@#* . Took my tank water to the store. Bc I saw one little lone guppy. Explained the situation.. they tested water. (It's acidic this time) Offered me new fish which I had to take right then against my better judgement ,bc the days to return them were on the verge of expiring. Worked on the tank for 3 hours last night. Hopefully these fellas will survive. If not I may, or may not throw in the towel for a while. If you got this far, thank you for reading my book 😂

I left the hobby because we did move and never set the aquarium I recently quit the saltwater reef hobby because the upkeep is insane and it’s expensive so we converted our 160 gallon acrylic to freshwater cichlid tank mostly south and Central America cichlids since then we have setup two 75 gallon tanks two 40 gallon breeders and two 20 gallon long tanks and recently we are having a custom 240 gallon long tank built and will be converting the two 40 gallon breeder into sumps for that tank

I first got a fish when I was about 6 years old after my Dad won a Gold fish at a local fair back in the day, back then the poor fish was kept in a bowl on the kitchen shelf but he survived for many years. Then we were given a tank and had a few comet gold fish in it. Later after migrating from UK to Australia, I had some fantail Goldfish and later with my husband we bought a tropical community tank.We had that for many years and also a Betta barracks tank as Betta became popular over here.We then bought a 400 litre marine tank and had a reef eco system with live rock, corals and the beautiful fish, but long term maintenance and having to buy the salt and RO water lead us to sell off the livestock and convert it to freshwater tropical for expensive Discus.Though they were beautiful fish, we kept losing them over time to " hole in the head " disease, perhaps due to our work schedules we couldn't keep maintaining a pristine water environment and so ended up selling the tank.
We had a hiatus for a while until I found a baby freshwater turtle outside our garage 8 years ago and we kept him in our 2 foot quarantine tank until he grew too big and is now in a 4 foot tank. So we only had the Turtle tank for the past 7 years. Then last year, I became interested in Betta fish again, so we converted the 2 foot tank with a fish tank divider and now have it heavily planted with Ottocinclus, Pygmy Corydora, and on one side is a Multicolour HMPK Betta and the other side a Nemo Candy Halfmoon Betta.
I'm now interested in smaller tanks to Aquascape and as Betta fish have a low bio load they are easier to maintain, at least that is what I'm finding, so they bought me back to the hobby, there are so many different types and beautiful colours I might end up with a whole room full of tanks lol.

waaaay back in 2003 the blackout claimed all my fish.. had 12 tanks at the time and it truly broke me.. quit for about 10 years but ive always had my pond. But what brought me back was the fishkeeping community here on youtube. yall are amazing.. for the most part lol. getting back in i wanted to do the big fish .. oscars, jags, cubans.. and the like but Africans.. man, i had to go this route this time because im limiting myself to only 4 tanks (wishfull thinking) .. show, growout, qc and one i move pond boys in for the winter

Its funny Ben i tell my girlfriend the exact same thing about our addiction to the hobby lol theres alot worse things we could be addicted too. What got me back into the hobby was my girlfriend and i buying a small 10 gallon aquarium for her daughter for a birthday present. Well that lit the fire and currently we now have a bunny a hamster a leopard gecko a bearded dragon and 12 fish aquariums

I got out because of overwhelm..too many tanks and constant upkeep killed the joy.
Now I only have two 25 gallon lightly stocked tanks and I love them…🫶

One of the things that has helped me increase my number of tanks has been working from home. I can get some maintenance and such done during lunches, etc., and two of my tanks are in my home office, so I get to enjoy them more. This definitely helps with the time management piece and gives me more time to appreciate the fish.

I’ve had African Cichlids for over 20 years on & off but mostly on. I just got rid of all my stuff I just didn’t have the dedicated needed & also the daily costs of living are just killing me & living in California gas is also extremely high this is probably the biggest reason but it wouldn’t surprise me if I get another tank in the future keeping fish is very satisfying & relaxing.

I was in fish keeping from childhood, and loved it so much I majored in Biology, and went to grad school in Florida for Zoology, specializing in fish ecology. However, I got hit with a 1-2 punch. One, my apartment got hit by lightning and burned down, killing many, but amazingly not all, of my aquarium pets (I kept the survivors in our lab). Then, due to allergies and eczema, I had to stop working with animals altogether. It was heartbreaking, and I stopped keeping aquariums altogether. About 20 years later, education got me back in. First, I had a teaching lab again. Then my kids’ teacher needed someone to rescue a betta. And then I helped our school and another school set up big tanks (55g and 140g, respectively). Now, I have a 10g at home, and a 29g and 55g in my teaching lab, and I’m excited about aquariums again. Kind of blows my mind!

Yeah, definitely for me, it would be my work/life schedule. That's the biggest challenge keeping the hobby going, but thanks to my wife, she's a life (fish) saver, lol, and takes care of them when Im gone. Thanks for the upload, Ben! Great survey!

Yeah I just came back into this hobby 3 months ago I was out of it for 15 years, (I was over over the road truck driver for 20+ years) this weekly water change is a new phenomenon to me 😂 back in the day we just did the gravel vacuum with 50% water change once a month that's it....👍🏾

I will add another reason that was not mentioned in this survey.
"Lack of consistent and reliable information, clear answers, and solutions to problems for beginners on fishkeeping."
Anyone can search or post online, but if you ask 10 people, you will get 10 different answers.
And then when you have fish loss seemingly "out of the blue," or after performing recommended tank maintenance, the confusion can make it seem futile to try and keep pursuing the hobby long-term.

I’m still very into the hobby but one thing that makes me distraught is not having room for a bigger tank like a 55. With housing costs being ridiculous it makes me wonder if I’ll ever have enough space one day for a fish room of my own.

How about the lack of interest or excitement there once was. When i started you seen top ten list, must have list, stocking list etc etc. It made a person want to hunt down a fish or stock a tank based off the beauty you see. Now all you see now a day especially in fb groups is fish loss and problems with people's tanks. Turn on youtube and most youtubers sponsoring sone sort of product or adding more tanks. Its almost like the content itself is gone which creates a lack of interest which sometimes lead to quiting

Mine was a combination, I moved house several times, and was looking to move again, is hard to 1 find a place that can house a large tank, and secondly the stress involved in shifting for myself and the fish. Second reason was the guilt i felt seeing a wild caught fish get bullied to death in my tank, as much as I cared for my wet pets and tried to do my best for them, seeing a wild fish die in a glass box like that hurt deep n made me question my choices

When you keep fish long term there are ups and downs. I have kept fish since the early 90’s. I had a 125 gallon tank I bought from pet smart. Top fin brand. Don’t buy this tank! Cheap stand. Set it up and ran for less than a year. Woke up one morning and it was leaking! Luckily I still have an empty 75g tank so I moved the fish and 2 cycled filters there. I decided to build a stand since the particle board was ruined from the leak. I attempted to reseal the aquarium. Took my time cleaned it and all. I filled it up,with water and put an HOB filter on it. I let run for a month to make sure it would not leak. The day before I was going to put the fish back it started leaking again! I was crushed. I wanted to quit but instead I bought another tank from a local fish store. I set it up and no issues! I almost gave up but my love for the hobby kept me going.

Left the hobby when my kids were born which at the time seemed the right thing To Do save money save time. Et cetera etc but I think I would have benefited more if I just would have stayed at it.
I think it would have stayed a little more even keel because when I came back to the hobby. I went absolutely insane bought 3 different size tanks experienced with every fish. I was missing out on fresh water sting rays ,arowana, Tons of different African cichlids every single kind of vieja, I went salutely insane spending way way too much money.
I think if I would have just stayed at it
It would have stayed more subdued and gradual., If I could add up all the money that I went through when I came back wow !
Thousands of dollars I could have in the bank right now. So for anybody who's Reading this Who has had a little bit of a hyattis and now Coming back to the hobby "TAKE IT SLOW"

In the end I can always get a new fish, and I am sick of her soulless junk
