The galaxy wallpaper shows the very effect of the HDR at 10:28 (of course the camera capturing the display which then encoded into this UA-cam video played on the whatever display we are watching on is not going to give the full detail of HDR that we would see in person :p) gives an idea of how bright things would be brighter, dim things would be dimmer, the stars do really shine. I need that wallpaper.
For those experiencing difficulties with HDR mode, washed out colours etc. I upgraded the version to v.033, however this did not resolve the issues. I then discussed with the reddit community and discovered version v.028 works perfectly, with beautiful vivid colours in HDR mode.

I made all these changes and just could not get into this monitor for office work. The text is not crisp and the panel dims when browser windows are expanded. 42” is also enormous for a desktop monitor. Sticking to the AW3420DW with the IPS panel for the time being.
The most accurate HDR mode is Console HDR, which is this monitor's equivalent to HGIG. Just make sure to use the Windows HDR calibration tool to set peak highlights.
I’m using this monitor with my Xbox Series X. When a game has a HDR settings, it means that the game is HDR compatible right? Yet whenever I enable HDR, it looks incredibly washed out and dark. I tried console HDR calibration yet nothing changes. Also I tried adjusting the in-game HDR setting but the difference is not that big like the image is still dark and washed out. I’m currently playing all my games with HDR turned off and they look so much better but I just think that I’m doing something wrong that’s not utilizing this monitor’s full capabilities.
The HDR mode in windows looks washed out. Do you guys prefer SDR or HDR in desktop? Is it worth playing with the nvidia colour control to normalise the colour space?
A new FW just released. V032. one of the fixes is the wake up issue. Downloading now. Update: Updated to V032. Looks like the issue is still there. But now looks like turning off / on from remote will always resolve the issue. Will test more. Update: I left monitor on Standby for about an hour and it woke up . I will keep testing it and update. Update: It seems it is sleep / wake up is improved alot. It is definitely better than before.
Asus have finally made the V031 firmware available for the PG42UQ here (support section > driver and tools > BIOS and firmware) rog.asus.com/uk/monitors/above-34-inches/rog-swift-oled-pg42uq-model/helpdesk/
I have a slightly off topic question if that's ok! In 2021 AU Optronics said they were working on a 32" 4k 144hz JOLED monitor. However in your most recent update post on AUO in June, they were talking up their AmLED mini LED technology saying that it's better than JOLED and didn't mention any JOLED plans. Do you think AUO abandoned those JOLED panels in favor of AmLED? For me that would be extremely disappointing as I would highly prefer a pure RGB OLED panel for a gaming/productivity monitor as opposed to any annoying local dimming. There are lots of people that don't need high brightness or care about HDR in a monitor, low brightness VA/IPS panels sell well. You reported that LG are working on high refresh rate OLED displays, but they will use WRGB pixel structure which isn't great for text clarity in monitors, and only 27" and ultrawide 34" models below 4K were reported on. I find 32" to be the right size so you don't have to use scaling In Windows and run 4K natively. I have an entry level LG 32" 4K monitor that I use for programming, but I need to use my secondary monitor for high refresh rate gaming. I was looking forward to having one display for everything, especially with an aspect control setting like in this monitor to play esports titles in, these 42" monitors are just too big for me. I know the market is filling up with 32" high refresh IPS and VA panels, but I would feel silly splurging for one of those if OLEDS in that format were coming. Thanks for your awesome coverage!
Good question and to be honest we’ve seen no mention of OLED production from AUO since that piece in May 2021. It wasn’t listed in their panel roadmaps in our most recent update. It’s possible it was just a concept and was abandoned, but also equally possible it’s still being developed but just taking a lot of time. Certainly not seen anything firm on it yet I’m afraid.
@@tftcentral I sincerely appreciate your response! It's going to be hard resisting the urge to buy a high refresh rate 4K panel this Black Friday! Getting a little tired of using my old 1080p 144hz TN lol...
I’m not sure I’m familiar with that? But if it’s the kind of thing that will leave static elements on the screen all the time, that’s probably not a good idea on an OLED
Is this one of the best monitors right now? I'm trying to figure out what to buy for a triple setup for sim racing. Don't want smaller than 37 and no bigger than 43 no curve screens
Should be no difference when it comes to VRR support or performance, they are just labelled differently in the menu, presumably because HDMI would more commonly be used for console VRR instead of DP. If you have an HDMI 2.1 graphics card you can use either. That would allow 12-but colour depth input but with the panel being native 10-bit, and there being little true high bit depth content , I doubt you’d ever see any visual difference. Technically HDMI would also not need to use DSC like Displayport would but again you won’t see any visual difference. Use whichever is easier and whichever you don’t need for connecting something else :)
@@tftcentral thanks, I would prefer DP but DP tabs out slow of full screen games, where hdmi tabs out quick.. no idea why, wasn't like this on my 27 inch 1440p, so using hdmi 2.1, I will update to windows 11 from 10 and see if it still does this.
I am at my wits end with this screen (though I have the 48). With HDR on, everything just looks washed out, and SDR mode is significantly brighter. Wondering if it's broken, or if I've broken something :(
brighter where, in Windows when you have just enabled HDR mode? remember that HDR content will be tone mapped differently, so comparing Windows desktop (and other SDR content) running with HDR active, will look different to SDR content running in non-HDR mode. doesn't mean it's broken. the brighter parts of HDR will be for appropriately tone mapped content that reaches the higher peak brightness. HDR doesn't by default mean a brighter image
@@tftcentral Was using Forza Horizon 5 for the comparison since that was the only thing I could think of that has HDR that I had installed. But in that, SDR seems a lot brighter, unless that's because of the settings in the monitor? I'll have a quick comparison to some other games. Thinking Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn. But yeah, the desktop look was throwing me off since white becomes tan, and then the screens next to the middle one are way brighter in colours and whites. Appreciate the help though, this is all new to me.
It’s tricky using HDR mode in non HDR content like the desktop, that doesn’t always look very good on many monitors. Make sure you’ve switched to the settings we recommend to try and get the best balance of white point temp in both modes though. See how it is in actual HDR content and maybe try switching between the settings and modes that are still available during HDR to see if you can find one you like
@@tftcentral I think I have narrowed it down, maybe, to Windows 10. Have dual boot so I was comparing between 10 and 11, and in Cyberpunk 2077, they look like entirely different games. Was trying to test Forza but Windows decided it didn't want to install because.... well, Windows. Either way, 2077 is dull and washed out, including the menus with HDR on in Windows 10. There is even a weird outline around text while it launches on 10 that isn't there in 11. Haven't managed to find anything in the direction of unbreaking it though :'(
I just got a PG42UQ and I've found that running Microsoft's HDR Calibration Tool can bring back some of the colors on the desktop in HDR mode. However, the entire screen seems dim in HDR mode. Brightness is set to 100%, but the screen is pale and dim compared to the Acer Predator X27 next to it. My Razer Blade 15's OLED screen puts the PG42UQ to absolute shame in brightness and color richness. HDR videos don't have the bright highlights that I'd expect. The white text on the On-Screen display is at least 50% brighter than a full 255 white on the desktop. I'm pretty disappointed so far, but still searching for a solution.
Because they’re annoying during those kind of uses. There’s more value in being careful with your content and use than there is on the brightness randomly dimming a bit and in the screen moving a few pixels randomly imo
Well it’s not ideal for desktop productivity and professional uses really due to the large screen size, only moderate pixel pitch, unusual WRGB sun pixel layout and text rendering. Those aren’t strong areas for this screen
Can you explain further on why HDR has most of the settings locked? I have this monitor and it seems like the HDR profile looks more dull, but when I take it off I am able to get a more saturated/colorful panel.. Which mode is the best to use for day to day monitor use and gaming?
HDR mode just has most of the settings locked which is fairly common for those modes on monitors. Unless you’re using HDR content specifically, leave that disabled in windows and run in SDR mode. Only enable HDR when you’re using HDR content :)
I have this same exact issue (dull HDR). I bought this to replace my fv43u (non OLED) which had very bright HDR, but this oled pales in comparison. I assume due to oleds in general not able to get very bright and the old monitor is hdr1000 certified. I'm so disappointed and am thinking about returning it.
@@tftcentral Great, thank you. Should I assume then that the HDR settings will remain the same on the monitor itself outside of recalibration via the HDR Calibration App?
This may sound crazy, but I just got this monitor and to me, it seems like it has an inner curve, like a ball. I don’t know if my mind is playing tricks on me because I’m used to the Samsung 57 G9.
The settings in this video should be fine for that too. You may want to have a higher brightness level depending on your viewing position and room lighting
For gaming it really is down to user preference. Will depend on your ambient light conditions (like if you game in the dark for instance), game content, viewing distance etc. just set it at whatever you prefer 😀
10-bit is prob best best. You can send 12-bit from the graphics card but given the panel is native 10-bit, and there’s very little 12-bit content, there’s no real need to send that
@@tftcentral Yea That's it . I have a AMD 5700XT 50Th Anniversary. It does 2.0 only. That is why I am using DP. Will not wake up in 138Hz. Only 120Hz it will wake up.
Hey do you mind if I ask you a question? Your time is appreciated! My issue is HDR enabled in Windows 11 just looks so washed out, to the point where I really started to just turn off HDR in desktop, and games unless they have an HDR option to enable! It just simply looks better that way. This is my second panel, after a replacement, and the first one I just left in HDR and didn't think about it. But now that I've tried to solve this problem I haven't been able to get over the hill, so the speak. I have the HDR Calibration Tool for Win 11 and it's set correctly. I still look washed out so the solution I found was to increase Digital Vibrance in the nV Control Panel from 50% to 60%, and that looks A LOT better! However, when I fire up Netflix, my black bars on Wide Screen Format are not black. In fact, if I just turn HDR off and hack to 50% Digital Vibrance.... It just looks better! If I watch Netflix in HDR on my PS5 it looks amazing.. Any suggestions? Willing to buy you a coffee for your time.. TIA
Here, try this out. This change took 6 hours for me to find it online and fixed the washed color issue on my monitor. ua-cam.com/video/ukZ1fZVlphc/v-deo.html
Hello, I am highly interested in purchasing that monitor. I've heard OLEDs are known for heating a lot, but this one comes with a lot of dissipator. Do you have any feedback / opinion regarding some extensive gaming use ? are there things to do (or rather to avoid) if you want it to last the longest possible ? Quite new with monitor and this is my first time wanting to purchase quite premium high quality hardware Very nice presentation though, links are very useful I will carefully read more about this monitor
I've owned a PG42UQ for a year. It's stunning. It does have an anti-glare coating, but that didn't bother me. However, it broke last week (suddenly gray lines all over the place, and a pulsing white line at the bottom) - the fix was quick and only took 1 week but had to pay for shipping one way. The LG C3 is better for all around use. The streaming apps makes it a better value, no anti-glare coating getting in the way, and it's cheaper! LG C3 is $999 with black Friday deals vs. $1,399 for the Asus. Sure, the C3 is ONLY 120hz but another $400 for 18 fps and NO streaming apps? Naa.
The wake up is much better now. Sometimes when restarting it will not detect the signal. but turn off/on from remote fixes the issue. For HDR , did you try to switch between the modes ? for me when I try to switch between different modes, it flashes and does nothing . I am not sure if ti is only me or an new problem with the new FW . I did not notice it before. Update: Yes this issue is introduced in V032. I reflashed V031 and switching between HDR modes works perfectly fine. I will go back to V032 just for the wake up for now ...
Curious------my 6 year old Samsung S32D850T is set to 75% brightness and the monitor is rated 300cd/m2 or 300 nits. 75% x 300 = 225 nits. I feel it's just right in a moderately lit room. Your video seems to suggest that 120 nits is ideal for desktop use? Wouldn't that to way too dim?
Some people prefer a much brighter screen, especially for gaming and movies, but it will depend on your ambient light conditions and content. There’s also a chance of course that a 75% setting isn’t as bright as the calculation, but it is likely to be a fair bit brighter than 120 nits. Totally fine to configure this screen or any other to individual preference
Just have a quick question. How often do you perform the “Pixel Cleaning” function? Mine is prompting me multiple times a day. Not the biggest issue, I just want to know if it’s supposed to be telling me so often. Thanks.
It will probably prompt you until you run it, but after that it shouldn’t bother you for quite a while. If it is, make sure you’ve installed the latest firmware
@@tftcentral Yeah I made sure to update to the latest firmware last week when I set it up. But I do run the pixel cleaning, and still does the prompt 1 or 2 more times that same day. Possibly a bug, and my guess is that it won't hurt the monitor running it at least once per day. Thanks for the quick followup.
Running pixel cleaning a lot could shorten lifespan so I wouldn’t recommend running it regularly. Maybe try a screen reset and flash the same firmware again perhaps
As someone who is going to be using a monitor for running applications like unreal engine editor and gaming on the side, would you say this monitor is practical to use in terms of settings and daily work? I have waited for an OLED to check all the right boxes and this seems to do the trick, but I would very much like a monitor I set up once and not have to fiddle with again.
You don’t need to adjust any of the SDR or HDR settings once you’ve done them once. The screen remembers everything for you, and you just switch between those modes by inputting an HDR source from an external device or in windows by simply enabling hdr mode
@@AidenIlkhani Just like the old CRT monitors we used. Use a screen savor and turn off monitor like 5 or 10 minutes not in use. Shouldn't have burn in.
No additional lag. You can sometimes see flickering in some situations which seems to be inherent to all OLED panels but on the most part in normal use I expect that to be rare for most people. You can of course always leave Gsync off if needed
Question---------Asus specs suggest this panel to be 400 nits. Would 100% brightness be 400 nits instead of 200 nits at 3:34 mark? EDIT: never mind, I understand now this is with Uniform Brightness turned on. Still, with UB turned off, 100% brightness is listed as 366 nits. Shouldn't this be 400 nits as advertised?
Thank you Simon for this great video on this monitor. I just bought this today and followed your set up on this vid. This thing is pretty awesome, 1st thime trying a OLED monitor. Was afraid of the burn in but will keep up with the pixcel cleaning options this monitor has. I also read your review, Great read on this monitor!! I was looking at the C2 but this is more of a monitor than a tv, so I told my self fuck it, I shelled out the extra $$$ for it. Thanks again Simon.
Having problem with the Displayport “line in” with no sound, build in speaker work fine. Hdmi 2.1 line in works fine which mean audio out cable works fine..displayport stream to 1.2 have sound in “ line in” but with crazy statics.. do you think this is hardware issue or firmware issue? Im currently on v028..
I’d be very surprised if it made any meaningful difference during a time period you’d likely keep a display for. Certainly not seen any evidence it has an impact
I got my replacement in. It works but the joystick is broken. Matte screen is fine . So do I ship it back for a broken joystick? Remoter does everything. So I might keep it. I paid $1500. It is not worth it. If I did it over I would just keep the C2.
I rarely used the joystick as the remote is far easier so I don’t think it would bother me. Maybe return it at a later date when stock is better or if it gives you issues?
Thank you for the settings :) However on my model I don't have g-sync compatible like yours but only "on" or "off" and in the Nvidia control panel it is indicated that the selected screen is not certified g-sync compatible. I'm on HDMI 2.1. on RTX 3080TI. Do you have an idea ?
@@tftcentral I just checked and my monitor will not do g-sync. I have tried the nVidia pendulum demo and it will not do g-sync (I also have the G-sync compatible indicator checked in the Display menu in the nVidia control panel and it never shows up in any games). I do have everything enabled in the nVidia "set up G-Sync" screen in the nVidia control panel. As mentioned on that screen it says the monitor is not validated as g-sync compatible. I am running the 32 firmware and all drivers up to date. Also, nVidia does NOT list this monitor on their official list. So...not sure what is going on... And I do have it enabled in the OCD menu and I'm using DP 1.4 and a 3080TI.
Hi! I just wanted to know about HDR calibration in win10\11. Should i go through it? Or... And in drivers folder there is ICC profile. Should I use it and when if should?
I read on Rtings that this monitor can only get to 200 nits in SDR tops. Call me mad but I like my screen at around 270 nits (I work in a very bright room). Do you think this display can get to 270 nits in SDR more with Uniform Brightess ON maxing out the brightness setting?
@TFTCentral Hi had a couple of questions In the video i did not hear you clearly so to achieve MAX BRIGHTNESS do you check the box that says BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTABLE or do you leave that unchecked? My second question is with HDR enabled your are not able to use GAMEVISUAL correct?
For max HDR brightness you need to leave the brightness control set at 100 in that mode. The “brightness adjustable” option would allow you to turn that down to reduce the peak brightness if you ever wanted to. Not 100% sure on the game visual options in HDR mode, I can’t recall. But that is probably likely that they are unavailable in that mode. Perhaps available if moving to the HDR Game mode instead of HDR Movie?
Hi @TFTCentral, Looks like it doesn't allow to have Uniform Brightness ON for user mode and OFF for other gaming modes... Does it mean that the only way to have two settings for work and gaming is to save overall profiles in 'Customized settings' (under MyFavourite). Please advise :) it would make it so much more convenient just to switch the GameVisual...
@@tftcentral I have observed it from having the screen as I wanted to have one configuration for working and another config for gaming following your instructions...
I think you’re thinking about HDR content mastering which actually commonly goes up to 10,000 nits. SDR content is actually mastered for 80 nits. Recommended desktop monitor use is 120nits. The screen can still reach up to around 800 nits peak for HDR which is on the upper end of OLED capabilities but the brightness talked about in this video was about SDR and general use day to day and you won’t want that much past 200 nits max I don’t think
@@tftcentral I was actually talking about the gaming part on this video that section. Is this monitor bright when gaming on like the ps5 or series X if you want it to be? What does this monitor look like on those consoles?
V32 firmware still doesn't fix 12bit signal detection, even after a full reset to defaults. Still, if this fixes the wake issue, i'll be happy. My trick was to use the WIn11 HDR enable\disable shortcut, and it forced a detection that would wake the screen. Win+alt+b
Are these settings still optimal for the latest firmware? (v031) For example after I updated it cleared the settings and set the default sdr contrast to 80.
When I enter the OSD I only have access to "Input Select" and "System Settings". I'm pretty sure I have all the settings on the Windows side set up correctly. Any idea why I cannot access the OSD menu options "Gaming", "Image", "Color", "PIP/PBP Setup" and "MyFavorite"? Thanks.
Well you could do things like run in wide gamut mode all the time, even when working with sRGB /SDR content which will accentuate the colours and make them more saturated. But some of the “pop” comes from the glossy coating on the C2 which cannot be replicated when a screen has a matte AG coating
Thank you for your video. I have purchased this monitor but it seems to have some issues, but I am not sure if it is because of my graphic card or the monitor. I can connect my pc with a display port to a 60Hz 4k monitor but this PG42UQ will show the desktop screen for a moment and then goes black. I can connect the PG42UQ monitor with a HDMI which can only go up to 60Hz if I connect it to HDMI 2.1, even at lower resolutions of 1900x1200 it only goes up to 60Hz. I also tried the HDMI 2.0 port on the PG42UQ and could get it to work at 120Hz at 1900x1200 resolution, so I find it strange that the monitor cannot reach 120Hz with the HDMI 2.1 port even at 1900x1200.
Sounds very odd what you’re experiencing. It’s hard to know what to suggest unless you can figure out a way to troubleshoot in steps. Either DP or HDMI 2.1 should work fine at 4k 120Hz but 60Hz should be easy Have you disabled overclocking From the screen? That could help. And get latest graphics card drivers too. Maybe do a screen reset from the osd menu too
@@tftcentral Thank you for your reply. Yes it is odd. I have the latest graphic driver and have tried reseting the monitor from the osd menu, also if I turn on the overclocking the display goes black while I can still access the osd and can turn it off, which makes the screen to show desktop again 😬 please let me know if any other troubleshooting steps comes to your mind, and also if I get any info from the customer support I will post here in case if anyone else need it. Multiple sources claims that this screen will have support for the best version of Freesync for AMD cards, however in no vidos or pictures I've seen does it show up as an option.
Ok I’m with you now. FreeSync certification tiers explained here, but basically the Premium and Premium Pro tiers have the same requirements for VRR performance and criteria, but the Pro tier also includes HDR support tftcentral.co.uk/news/amd-announce-new-certification-scheme-for-freesync-including-new-premium-and-premium-pro-levels This screen hasn’t yet been certified by AMD at all, or at least it’s not listed on their regularly updated database. I’m not sure if that’s because Asus haven’t bothered getting it certified (having already done nvidia Gsync), or if it’s just pending www.amd.com/en/products/freesync-monitors If they do get it certified you’d have thought it would be under Premium Pro, although for some reason their 48” PG48UQ is under Premium, despite it clearly supporting HDR etc. not really sure what the reason is for that
@@tftcentral Slightly more confusing as well if the 48" version is Freesync certified, but the 42" isn't. I'm currently considering buying this monitor, but will likely run it with one of the new AMD 7000 series gfx cards, so Freesync compatibility is a concern.
I wouldn’t be at all worried about it to be honest. I’m sure it’s just pending, or perhaps not updated by AMD yet. In fact the PG42UQ osd software lists FreeSync Premium when enabling VRR over HDMI (from memory) so it must be on the cards. Even so, it works fine with AMD cards :)
Could be a few things. Most likely you need to enable uniform brightness mode which will disable the ABL in SDR Usage. You may be running the screen in HDR mode all the time though, with it enabled in windows display settings all the time? If so, disable that and only enable HDR when you’re going to view actual HDR content. Otherwise the ABL will be active all the time and you’ll see dimming depending on the content shown. Could also be the screen saver function which will dim the screen when it detects prolonged static content. That’s an OLED protection measure but you can disable it in the OSD If it’s that causing the issue
Is there a way to shut off the monitor with the remote while your laptop/pc still on? When I press the power button on the remote, the screen shut off and comes back on after like 5-10 seconds..
That should power the screen off completely and it shouldn’t come back on until you power it back on. Do you get the same result if you use the power button on the screen, next to the joystick contoller?

Hey @TFTCentral, First of all, big thankyou for this video! Really helped me dial in my display for gaming and office use. One question, I noticed Windows HDR colours are really washed out but look fine in SDR mode. Do you or anyone else here know how to make Windows HDR colours look normal when Windows HDR is enabled? I hope Asus is planning on updating the tone maps for Windows HDR in a future firmware update...
Ok. Could maybe try V032 if that’s available again or I think Asus are doing a new ver very soon. Expect that might be the only good way to impact HDR appearance although I’d prob recommend only switching to HDR mode for content and not for general desktop use anyway if you can
@@tftcentral Appreciate the reply. Looks like I might just have to do that and switch between HDR and SDR modes in Windows until Asus addresses the issue. With a bit of tinkering, I found adjusting the colour vibrancy in my graphics cards control panel (nvidia) when HDR is enabled can help somewhat, but I lose colour accuracy at that point. Thanks again @TFTCentral, love your vids :)
Anyone else got a annoying coilwhine sound from the inbuilt speaker? Had to 🔇 mine in the display meny,.. and one dead pixel this far and the top row of pixels on the screen are living a life of their own, flickers with various intensity and colors .. 🤔
I have another question. Can I ask if anyone else has the information on the OSD menu stating that VRR is "NO", even when their variable refresh rate is on? Also inside the information it says the monitor is 8bpc while the specifications of the monitor says 10-bit. Another issue it seems that when I turn on blue light filter it jumps to Racing mode from other modes. This seems very weird. I wonder if this is the case for others or if my PG42UQ is faulty.
With VRR is that when you’ve enabled it in monitor menu and also on graphics card? Also with colour depth make sure that’s set in graphics card properly. I don’t recall that not reporting correctly for me. Could be a FW bug. Are you running latest available V028? I noticed some oddities with blue light filters too which we reported to Asus. Those modes are a bit pointless imo so I wouldn’t bother using them. All they are doing is changing the colour temp. You can do that more easily via the colour temp setting anyway This is the big we reported in our review with the blue light filters for reference: We noticed a bug as well in that when you turn blue light filter back off, the screen defaults to the ‘user mode’ colour temp instead of whatever you had it set at (e.g. 6500K) and also defaults your RGB channels to 100/100/100 which gives you a very cool setup of around 11,000K. This happens even if you’d manually changed those RGB channels in user mode. It’s a bug we expect Asus will fix with a firmware update, but for now it’s probably best not to mess around using the blue light filter modes.
@@tftcentral Thank you very much for your reply. When I enabled g-sync inside the graphic card, it turned on inside the OSD information :). And, yes, I should wait for the update for the blue light filter to be fixed. For the colour depth, I am running the V28 version, but if I increase the colour depth inside the graphic card settings, the monitor screen goes black for a few second and back again for a few second and this continues until I turn it back down to 8-bit. I suppose it stems from the same issue I asked you about in my previous comment, but still I am not sure if it is because of my graphic card or the monitor. Thanks very much again, at least based on your response there is still no proof that the monitor is faulty :)
Regarding the 8bit q. I have a 3080FE, and I explicitly set it to 10bit color, and the monitor reflected this change afterward. However, if I chose 12bit color, it would read 8 bit on the monitor. Not sure if that helps at all.
@@omarbujosa1871 oh,that's a very interesting observation. Maybe because the monitor only supports max 10 bit based on Asus website. I suppose they should fix that for the next update to avoid telling the gpu that it has 12 bit 😬
I was wondering if you connected this monitor to a console. When connected to the PS5 it shows 4k but at 60hz. Is that something that can be changed in the settings?
I did connect it to an Xbox and that worked fine for 4k 120Hz. Make sure you’re using the HDMI 2.1 inputs and not the 2.0 inputs which are mixed on the back!
Thanks for that information. I note my top resolution settings only state: HDMI-3 3840 x 2160@60Hz. I am running an RTX3080Ti graphics card. How do change this to DisplayPort etc. Thanks again.
Can’t recall if that’s available or not on this model as it’s a while back but I thought there was an option for it. Maybe check the user manual on their website to be sure
In the monitor settings, go to System Setup and you will see a setting called "Power Indicator". This toggles on/off the red ASUS logo. If you don't see this option, then it may only be in recent firmwares, so update your monitor to the latest firmware (V040 as of this post). You want to be on V040 anyway, for the significant HDR related improvements.
If you’re talking about the mention of “backlight”, then yeah, I know. I couldn’t be bothered to re-record it as I knew people would know what I meant 😀 Re brightness, that is designed for general everyday monitor usage in SDR (ie not HDR) mode, not strict SDR content rendering and 100 nits will almost certainly be too dark for most people. 120 is the recommended luminance for a desktop monitor in normal lighting daytime conditions, but we’ve also provided 150 and 200 for those who like it brighter still or are in a more well lit room. If we can’t go get pickier still, we could calibrate to 80 nits as the standard for sRGB 😁
@@tftcentral Thanks again for the reply... love you content. I have the C2, and I am the guy who is hoping you will have an ICC /ICM profile for it soon :-) No rush :-).
Why does windows 11 look washed out and like crap with HDR on? Also does the latest FM update include all past updates? I just installed FW update v29.
Quite often the handling of SDR content in windows within HDR mode can be poor. One of the main reasons it’s recommended to only enable HDR mode when you’re viewing actual HDR content. tftcentral.co.uk/articles/heres-why-you-should-only-enable-hdr-mode-on-your-pc-when-you-are-viewing-hdr-content And yes afaik it should include all previous Fw updates each time it’s updated

My 32 is a curved. The more I played with the C2 . If it was curved a little. It would be great as a desktop monitor. It will bring the corners to you and not in a angle. I am looking at the Lg flex now but $3000.00 is too much. Need to wait for a 42 glossy curved monitor. I think the Lg flex is a matte finish too.
The LG bendable OLED has a matte coating yes. I wouldn’t expect it to be radically different in price to the C2 once it’s launched given the same panels and largely same specs and features but time will tell
@Matthew Walsh you work for ASUS you should’ve told the bozos in marketing to sell both a matte and glossy version so people could’ve had a choice. The fact it’s just matte is going to turn a lot of people off.

Excellent information. Thanks very much for putting this together!

The most accurate HDR mode is Console HDR, which is this monitor's equivalent to HGIG. Just make sure to use the Windows HDR calibration tool to set peak highlights.

@@victorkarlsson5183 Running V031, how's the (uniform) brightness? Over 200 nits?

Hey Simon, I do have a question for you. Would you recommend leaving the ASUS GPU Tweak 3 Overlay on or off??? Just because of burn in??? Thanks.
I’m not sure I’m familiar with that? But if it’s the kind of thing that will leave static elements on the screen all the time, that’s probably not a good idea on an OLED
@TFTCentral thanks, it's a overlay like msi afterburner.

what is better DP or hdmi 2.1, it seems to tab out games fast with hdmi, but delay with DP, also DP has gsync but hdmi has variable refresh rate??
@@tftcentral which is better, are you saying I can do 12 bit ? or 10 bit is max

Both are equal visually so it doesn’t matter. If you find HDMI to tab out of games quicker, and you need that, then use HDMI :)
Interesting. Why would you turn off all the screen protection and anti-burn features when in the office and for everyday use mode?
Because they’re annoying during those kind of uses. There’s more value in being careful with your content and use than there is on the brightness randomly dimming a bit and in the screen moving a few pixels randomly imo
@@tftcentral ok thanks understand. Are there any tasks you don't recommend doing on this monitor?
Well it’s not ideal for desktop productivity and professional uses really due to the large screen size, only moderate pixel pitch, unusual WRGB sun pixel layout and text rendering. Those aren’t strong areas for this screen
@@tftcentral Use FANCY ZONES if you are bothered by the large screen size.

What output color depth would you recommend using for this monitor? 8, 10 or 12 bpc?
10-bit is prob best best. You can send 12-bit from the graphics card but given the panel is native 10-bit, and there’s very little 12-bit content, there’s no real need to send that
I noticed I can not get 10bit color or HDR on the HDMI cable. Only with the DP. HDMI goes to 8bit color 120HZ. DP will do 10 bit color at 138Hz

TIA

Very nice presentation though, links are very useful I will carefully read more about this monitor
Naa.
Been using the 48" for about a year, and its AWSOME.

Thanks.

@@tftcentral partly the burn-in factor and partly the adjustment of settings between HDR and sdr.
You don’t need to adjust any of the SDR or HDR settings once you’ve done them once. The screen remembers everything for you, and you just switch between those modes by inputting an HDR source from an external device or in windows by simply enabling hdr mode

No additional lag. You can sometimes see flickering in some situations which seems to be inherent to all OLED panels but on the most part in normal use I expect that to be rare for most people. You can of course always leave Gsync off if needed

Those measurements are covered in our review linked in the description 😀
@@tftcentral Thank You appreciate the reply.
Please is it possible to do the same guide for the best settings for ps5 ?
Follow the HDR part (starts at 10:20).
Hi @TFTCentral,
Looks like it doesn't allow to have Uniform Brightness ON for user mode and OFF for other gaming modes... Does it mean that the only way to have two settings for work and gaming is to save overall profiles in 'Customized settings' (under MyFavourite). Please advise :) it would make it so much more convenient just to switch the GameVisual...
We no longer have access to the screen to test, but is this something you’ve observed from having the screen, or a theoretical question/ assumption?
@@tftcentral I have observed it from having the screen as I wanted to have one configuration for working and another config for gaming following your instructions...
Not sure how you are having issues. I am able to have two different modes with one off and one on depending on what I am doing.
That’s my recollection of configuring the screen too
Thanks. Will try to update the software and see then. Cheers!
Is this bright enough for gaming? How many nits is it for PlayStation or series x I read 900 online but you said 366 nits that’s way too low 😕
Win+alt+b
Is this issue where the monitor goes black on it's own during use?
Are these settings still optimal for the latest firmware? (v031) For example after I updated it cleared the settings and set the default sdr contrast to 80.
Those settings were from the V031 FW yes
When I enter the OSD I only have access to "Input Select" and "System Settings". I'm pretty sure I have all the settings on the Windows side set up correctly. Any idea why I cannot access the OSD menu options "Gaming", "Image", "Color", "PIP/PBP Setup" and "MyFavorite"? Thanks.
I think I was just in power saving mode. If anyone else has this issue preform an "All Reset" and select standard mode on the pop up.
Can the monitor be calibrated to have more "pop out" colours like the LG C2 with its glossy display?
Well you could do things like run in wide gamut mode all the time, even when working with sRGB /SDR content which will accentuate the colours and make them more saturated. But some of the “pop” comes from the glossy coating on the C2 which cannot be replicated when a screen has a matte AG coating
Thank you soso much!!
Which graphics card do you have? And are you using the provided cables?
@@tftcentralYes, I am using the cables in the box of the monitor and the graphic card is RTX 3080
@@tftcentral Also I can find V28 on Asus website, which I have updated to. I am not sure if V31 can resolve this or not
Sounds very odd what you’re experiencing. It’s hard to know what to suggest unless you can figure out a way to troubleshoot in steps. Either DP or HDMI 2.1 should work fine at 4k 120Hz but 60Hz should be easy
Have you disabled overclocking From the screen? That could help. And get latest graphics card drivers too. Maybe do a screen reset from the osd menu too
@@tftcentral Thank you for your reply. Yes it is odd. I have the latest graphic driver and have tried reseting the monitor from the osd menu, also if I turn on the overclocking the display goes black while I can still access the osd and can turn it off, which makes the screen to show desktop again 😬 please let me know if any other troubleshooting steps comes to your mind, and also if I get any info from the customer support I will post here in case if anyone else need it. Thanks again 😊

@@tftcentral V031 released today :D
Multiple sources claims that this screen will have support for the best version of Freesync for AMD cards, however in no vidos or pictures I've seen does it show up as an option.
What do you mean by “the best version of freesync”?
@@tftcentral Supposedly there are three levels of Freesync, and what I've seen mentioned is the top tier Fressync Premium pro.
Ok I’m with you now. FreeSync certification tiers explained here, but basically the Premium and Premium Pro tiers have the same requirements for VRR performance and criteria, but the Pro tier also includes HDR support
tftcentral.co.uk/news/amd-announce-new-certification-scheme-for-freesync-including-new-premium-and-premium-pro-levels
This screen hasn’t yet been certified by AMD at all, or at least it’s not listed on their regularly updated database. I’m not sure if that’s because Asus haven’t bothered getting it certified (having already done nvidia Gsync), or if it’s just pending
www.amd.com/en/products/freesync-monitors
If they do get it certified you’d have thought it would be under Premium Pro, although for some reason their 48” PG48UQ is under Premium, despite it clearly supporting HDR etc. not really sure what the reason is for that
@@tftcentral Slightly more confusing as well if the 48" version is Freesync certified, but the 42" isn't.
Can these user settings be saved in custom profiles?
I’m not sure, I don’t think the PG42UQ has custom preset modes but you can just save them to any of the existing presets, of which there are plenty :)
Thanks for your effort , some setting are dimmed when i'm try to change it , it's a gray can you support me ?
Which settings are greyed out? Are you sure you’re not in HDR mode all the time as many are greyed out then?
this monitor keeps dimming while im using it and i can not figure out how to disable the auto dimming.
@@tftcentral the control on the panel work fine, just the remote is weird.. but i found a way to make it work, I gotta double click/press the power on the remote like a mouse..not sure if they can fix this with the firmware or just something wrong with my remote..

Hey @TFTCentral,
First of all, big thankyou for this video!
Which firmware ver are you using?
@@tftcentral v31
You can do that more easily via the colour temp setting anyway
This is the big we reported in our review with the blue light filters for reference: We noticed a bug as well in that when you turn blue light filter back off, the screen defaults to the ‘user mode’ colour temp instead of whatever you had it set at (e.g.
@@tftcentral it’s on the bottom, right? I used those but only saw 60hz on the OSD.
Yeah it should be those ports. Weird. Try a different cable perhaps and maybe reset the screen settings
@@tftcentral yeah not working. I turned off overclock too, enabled and disabled VRR, still stuck at 60hz.
Does it work from your pc at max refresh? Maybe it’s a limit with the PS5 although it’s supposed to be fine!
Hi there, Just bought this monitor and it appears the "Overclocking" function is greyed out....any clues? Thanks
Might be related to the mode you’re using. Maybe try a screen OSD reset and take it from there. Using DP or HDMI?
Thanks for that information. I note my top resolution settings only state: HDMI-3 3840 x 2160@60Hz. I am running an RTX3080Ti graphics card. How do change this to DisplayPort etc. Thanks again.
I've sorted it out
Console HDR is the only option available to me in HDR? Bug?
Really?! Sounds like a bug. Is that from a PC? And are you on v028 FW?
Most of the settings you adjusted were disabled for me..is this because I'm using monitor on console
More likely you’re running in HDR mode all the time?
You need to have the monitor connected to a device that's turned on and is outputting a signal. Then all the menu options appear.

For some reason Asus still haven’t published it. I’m chasing them for info
I don't see an option in my menu to turn off the red ASUS logo at the bottom. How can I do this ,as it's very annoying :(
Can’t recall if that’s available or not on this model as it’s a while back but I thought there was an option for it. Maybe check the user manual on their website to be sure
The only option is getting a new monitor, just give your Asus to me since it's no good for you.
Why can't I use all the settings u're using and I have the same monitor?? Everything is greyed out
Cuz the monitor comes with HDR ON, you have to desactive it to see those settings
You need to have the monitor connected to a device that's turned on and is outputting a signal. Then all the menu options appear.
Oops... heheh at 2:55 You know what I am talking about :-). In all seriousness... why are you calibrating to 120nits and not 100 nits for SDR/sRGB?
If you’re talking about the mention of “backlight”, then yeah, I know. I couldn’t be bothered to re-record it as I knew people would know what I meant 😀
Re brightness, that is designed for general everyday monitor usage in SDR (ie not HDR) mode, not strict SDR content rendering and 100 nits will almost certainly be too dark for most people.
