Oh, weren't the 45 Jacket Covers so beautiful to look at. I only heard The Bee Gees when Jive Talkin' came out when I was around Eight, then of course I had to have the Saturday Night Fever Album, and then of course Barry Wrote The Theme Song To Grease. I think that may have been one of his most successful Outside Projects in terms of Solo Work. He should have gotten nominated for an Oscar.
Wow, well now you taught me something I didn't know. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth it to go into the music business. So many of them end their lives early and in misery. But oh the music they give us. At least they left something beautiful and everlasting to the world.
What words Maurice and Robin cannot find, Barry verbalized it straighforwardly at 6:04 with "What happened was drugs". Barry is honest and humble enough to admit where he got wrong and even admits he was a rogue. He is the best Bee Gee. Humble, matured, well-adjusted. He is really the big brother of the group. Able to understand what was going on, see the situation from the distance and learn from their mistakes.
@Adrienne Gurge So true, sadly. Had he been closer in age things may have been different. He was Barry's (late born) twin. They thought alike and spent much time together. It's tragic he's gone. I was watching an early performance of To Love Somebody just before. I could see so much of Andy in Barry the tears started :(
The “what happened was drugs” and “it always led to bed” sound like they’re straight out of an episode of “Behind the Music.” Barry was spilling the tea! 😂
@@missym7245 - Barry wasn't the angel he claimed. He took amphetamines too and was/is a pot head. He admitted it on Phil Donahue. He always points to his brothers foibles but sanitizes his own image. There is nothing honest or humble about him and his stories frequently change. He is a bossy self centered narcissist who refused to treat his brothers as equals and destroyed their self esteem. He never would have achieved half of what he did without his brothers, Robin his cowriter who sang their early hits and who Barry admitted had the best voice of the three and Maurice who was by far the best musician who put their words and lyrics to music. His wife had his cojones locked in a jar and went everywhere with him to keep him in check. One time a Swedish girl showed up at their London flat and thinking Linda was his housekeeper bragged about their torrid affair. He convinced Linda not to leave. His feet were in more places than on the ground. He is just a master PR man full of himself and 💩💩. I wouldn't cross the street to see him.
@@susieq9801 I've done more reading since I posted that and everything you say is true. I began to have doubts about Barry's character when he said he was fighting with each brother when they died, including Andy. I guess someone had to take charge but that's a decision all the group makes, not just one member. My favourite BG was Mo. He was gorgeous and so talented. His creativity suffered from the other two fighting constantly. Now that Lesley has gone Barry truly is the last man standing. He has lots of time to regret his actions and without the chance to redeem himself it's a form of punishment not to be envied. Barry playing around doesn't surprise me. I never thought it was fair on the kids when she insisted on going on the tours. When trust is broken to that extent you don't have much of a marriage left. She truly had her eyes on the prize and not much else.
@@missym7245 - There were a couple of things that finally made me dismiss Barry's pure and "humble" image. Streisand approached Robin to do another album after Mo passed. Robin called Barry to include him but Barry outright stole that project and shoved Robin out of it feeling like a rejected idiot. At the same time Robin and Yvonne wanted to organize a memorial tribute for Mo. Every time they approached Barry he was "too busy". Too busy to participate in a tribute for his own sweet, wonderful brother because he was producing the LP for Streisand, the one that he stole! He publicly attacked Robin claiming he tried to organize it without him. An outright lie. As a result it never happened. Barry even showed up late for Mo's funeral service dragging along Michael Jackson. Robin's way of grieving his twin was to perform and Barry shut him out. He blasted Robin for performing alone and singing "his" songs (actually songs that they wrote together!) yet it was OK for Barry to do so! Before Andy died, he too had lost all of his confidence due to losing jobs from being addicted and unreliable. He told Robin he wanted to be a pilot and had recently obtained his license. If he was Barry's "twin", why didn't he take him in? (Barry created his own twin because he said he said he could never be part of "Robin and Mo's "twin thing", their closeness.) Andy was sent to live with Robin. The family knew Robin wouldn't baby and indulge him and they actually became quite close. As soon as Andy finished rehab Barry wanted to drag him into the studio but he was terrified of failure and hit the bottle! He wasn't ready but Barry always knew best! I think both twins suffered low self esteem due to always being second fiddle to Barry, while one fought back and the other drank. After Robin died Barry said "I should have let Robin sing more". Who was he to decide? One associate summed it up. "A sure way to die is to get between Barry Gibb and a mic". Besides Barry's conceit I think much of the blame falls on Hugh and Stigwood. Both groomed and promoted Barry as the matinee idol to the dismissal of his brothers. That had to be hurtful! Hugh didn't even want Robin (who Hugh called the Billy goat) to sing any leads. What a loss that would have been! When the group split briefly in '69 Hugh said he hoped Robin would fall flat on his face and tried to have him made a ward of the court. Both Barry and Hugh disliked Robin's wife for supporting him and I believe that friction was part of the reason for their eventual divorce, something that devastated Robin. I think Barry's attitude came from being TOLD he was the boss so was not entirely his fault. He was oldest and a great PR man but The Bee Gees were three. The camera would often be on Barry even when his brothers were singing. I am sure now he has regrets. Too late. I guess we can all be armchair psychologists but in the final analysis actions do speak louder than words.
