    Just an update on my dragonfruit seeds. I used your method here and it only took 3 days for them to sprout! :) I live in Georgia and its been rather cold here so i kept them inside the house next to the window. I also put some seeds in a moist paper towel and put the towel into a plastic ziplock bag. 3 out of 6 sprout in the baggy :) But I deffinitly like this method here! Thanks again man for the great video.

    You should really think about putting together a pamphlet or small paper book. You have lots of great information and you don't get too technical. I would definitely buy one. Please keep making your videos.

    Thanks for the guide brother ive got 6 bags with different types of cacti all germinated at about 8 out of 10 seeds per bag! No mold so far and fast germination just over a week! 3 different strains so it works well with all kinds even the starfish seeds which are noticeably bigger seeds than the tiny black ones.Happy growing thanks again!

    I just started my first batch of seedlings. I did my soil differently. I use the DE that I can get form walmart for pretty cheap. I use it in my regular cacti mix as well with good results. I have been growing for a few years, and just undertook my first batch of seedlings. after one week I have gotten C. gigantea to come up so far. I did lots of others. I am using modified baggie method with containers but I have to mist them. I check mine twice a day.. So far seems to be working...

    Hey Cactusmain, This video is very informative. I sowed some VICTORIAE REGINAE AGAVE seeds on 6-24-14 following your method.
    I just checked them today 6-29-14 & I already see that 5 of them have germinated. Don't worry, I'm not going to mess with them, lol.
    I'll wait 3 or 4 months to do that :). Thanks again for all the info you share.

    Potting soil straight from the bag has a very high moisture content, hence the steam after microwaving. Thus in return one could make the statement of being scolded, instead of burned. Technicalities shouldnt validate one being a fool. Thank you for viewing my videos :)

    Thanks so much for the helpful video! I ordered some cactus and succulent seeds the other day and hope to plant them soon. Really helpful video. I would have just put as many pots as I could fit into a bigger bag, so thanks for pointing out why you use one bag per pot. In the past, I tried to grow a packet of mixed cactus seeds and they got to the point where they developed tiny spines, but then they turned red and stopped doing anything. I had them under some shop lights, but maybe too close to the source? Anyway, hopefully this time will be better! Now I need to go watch your other videos!

  • @BlueRoseArkelle
    @BlueRoseArkelle 12 років тому

    I did not microwave my soil before planting. (didn't know that step) However the seedlings are about 2 months old and are about 1/2" high. I noticed that there might be a fungus or discoloration on the Perlite. Can I transplant the seedlings into better prepared soil now? Or should I just wait and see how they do? They are a light green and look healthy with no "red" spots.
    I will follow your steps with the next batch I plant.

    @OlliMSa Thank you. As for transplanting the seelings, I tend to wait as long as I can. If you do it too soon there is a chance the seedlings will be shocked and either die or sit dormant for months. A good rule to go by, is to wait till there are a few sets of spines which resemble adult spines. Maybe 2-6 months after removing from the baggie. As for squeezing the seedlings- they are alot more frim than they look lol.

      Cactus seeds often germinate over a long period of time, so that the first to sprout are quite large before the last ones appear. Just take good care of them and they will eventually catch up.

    I don't get how your directions could work. I totally believe that your directions are really good for growing cactus but I just wonder why. Could you help me with my questions?
    Because in the wild, cactus grow 1. without microwaves 2. without coconut soil 3. without humidity, let alone plastic bags and 4. and has PLENTY of sunlight throughout it's whole lifecycle (so how could sunlight be to strong for seedlings?)

    Hey Cacticalmain, this is the best video I've seen yet and I have searched and watched all that I can find, I am using a 10 gal. tank for my seed chamber and you mentioned that you lined yours with foil, is that correct and can you send me a pic of yours & your light? This is my first time sowing cacti seeds and I just started some (mixed) a couple days ago to see how they do with my basic setup (hood with light and a grow light) should I leave a gap for air to get into the tank? Did you say you just use a standard fluorescent bulb, is that with a hood or without? Is that the only light for the entire 3 months they're in the baggie? I wish you would do more videos especially on growing them and basic care, you just explain things really well even I can understand. Sorry with all the questions but that's another reason you need to continue the videos, after all these yrs. you have new students coming by. (Late but present) TY very much I will continue mine as you have taught me.

    • @GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES.
      @GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES. 9 років тому

      +Ella Emanuel No watering at all while they're in the bag. The moisture from the soil is all that is needed. Since the bad is closed, the moisture/humidity just recirculates and keeps the soil moist. Once you take them out, watering will depend on the plant. With that said, most succulent seedlings are hard to overwater (unlike the adults), just don't drown them. I generally water seedlings a couple times a week, but I'll go by feel - if the soil feels dry, I water.

    Live in Spain. Have a Cactus I don't know the name of, it has a red non-spiky cap. It sprouts seed pods that look like peppers. They have 20 + seeds in.Haven't done all you advise, will try now, mine have been in Cactus compost, blotting paper and in a garden over 6 months now. Have put them in whole or emptied pods. Nothing has sprouted, do I assume they've died. Let's face it they grow in nature with know attention so I would've thought a few would've survived? Any thoughts/advice?

    When you have many thousands of seeds you can just sow and a handful will grow despite the conditions, some seeds will even bide their time. That's why they don't literally cover their natural habitats. But when you have a limited amount of seeds (and time) you want conditions that are as close to optimum as possible to ensure a success rate that's unnatural, and optimal growth.
    Incidentally, you'll be creating optimum conditions for fungus and other blights, hence microwaving and plastic bags.

Should I let the water soak until the entire pot is saturated, or just let them soak up some water for a few minutes and call it good? I have 15 Pilosocereus cactus ( from 20 seeds) I started on 8/2/2015 following your instructions. They are all doing well. However three of them have a light brown color while the others are bright green. Full disclosure I did add a bit of water as the pots were drying out at month two. I opened the zip lock bag just enough to stick the spout of a watering can in and add the water. Are the brown ones an issue? Besides the color they seem healthy. Will opening the bag a bit help? I'm about to start that process anyway on 11/2/2015 anyway. Great video and growing cactus from seed is addictive.

    Are you effectively sterilizing, or pasteurizing the soil? Also, is the water sterile or distilled? Why not add it before sterilization? Doesn't the sterile environment become contaminated during the cooling process?
    I tried to germinate 10 lophophora seeds without the sterilization process and they smell like a dirty diaper.

      Danny J should be ok, just keep eye on them, red-less light, stretching more light :)

    I have my first batch on its way, only a month gone so far and I have shoots. I found the best place was in the bathroom close to the radiator, as it's pretty cold and wet here in Ireland. I am a total beginner though and considering they are mixed cacti it looks only one specie has germination early. I will leave th for another couple of months, I think it may have been better to get non mixed but fingers crossed &

    Hey Cactusmain, I have just tried this method... fingers crossed, just wondering after the 3/4 months how do you go about transplanting them in to bigger pots, what soil etc.? :) TIA

    Don't I need to wet the seedlings until they are ready to come out. Or is the the moist from the pre-watered pot enough to keep it moist?

    so uh, do you ever seperate them? or you just let 20 cactus crowd the small pot forever?

    Great video, I have a question; I placed the pots in a small fridge that doesn't work anymore, put a lamp inside and turn it on during noon/night time (about 12 hours max) and then turn it off for the rest of the day, Im concerned as to whether I'm giving the seeds too much light and heat (it gets quite hot in there if i don't open it for a while) they've been there for about a week now and, i know it takes longer to germinate but I'm just worried since i dont want to cook my seed. Any advice regarding my situation will be greatly appreciated
