    Hi everyone, Massive Thanks goes out to Bang & Olufsen Ter Horst here in Utrecht for providing the Beoremote Halo for review! You can find him in the description and also here: www.onlineplayshop.nl/ Also if you liked the video, please consider subscribing for more and leaving a like as that helps me out a great deal :D Thank you very much for watching and I'll see you in the next one! :D PS, don't forget to let B&O know what you'd like them to expand on for the remote here in the comments!

    This surely needs to have album art? or radio station logos? Even the B&O app provides both..

    • @Mikipedia
      @Mikipedia  3 роки тому +2

      yeah, that would require a layout change though, not opposed to it although I like it as is too and they could move the album art to the side. I like that it'll always, even now, tell you what's playing :D

    Thanks for the video. It definitely needs to be able to browse deezer playlists and show the album art of what's playing - basically do what the mobile app does. A BLGW/BLI menu for light control and executing macros would be nice too! For TV control a guide button is a must have.

      Spotify not being present is because Spotify not allowing it to be shared over NL, it's not like B&O doesn't want to have it in everything. But Spotify seems to be changing course so there may be hope for it. Spotify throwing a fit at B&O is not on B&O :p

    Thanks for the video Mike, one of the questions that I had was how does it work PoE, now i understand that it works solely for the wall version only.
    Can you browse music on your own library?
    If you use it with Deezer, does it just go through your favourite channels when you select next channel, or is it all of them?
    With your Harmony, if you select Netflix as a source, does it start up Netflix on your Horizon? (Stupid q., but i thought I’d ask the obvious)
    Is Video Engine 1 the 2014 Avant?
    Are the MyButtons source specific? Ie do you have only four “global” my buttons? Or are they different depending on what product you’re controlling?
    Thank you

    • @Mikipedia
      @Mikipedia  3 роки тому +1

      PoE is just for power, not network, as it's Power over Ethernet(cable) :p
      1: atm no, wish it could! update to come when it comes obviously.
      2. don't entirely understand what you mean, but next track is the next track in the playlist you are currently using.
      3: Yes it'll start up netflix or any other source no problem.
      4: No, the Avant is video engine 4. The original avant (28''/32'') was video engine 1, so very old :p
      5: they are different per product, but you can sort of link them if the mybutton is multiroom. so yes and no, sort of lol.

      On which device, because the halo takes over the mybuttons from the device you connect it too? I managed to do it on the Harmony, but for some weird reason I had to log myself out of deezer and then back in again and now it just works.

    It is absolutely gorgeous, as you said too. I wouldn't describe it any other way! The only missed chance I see is it missing infrared to control "Beo4 compatible devices". A friend of mine is buying a Beovision 8 - 40 this weekend, I received a Beovision 8 - 32 yesterday, both beautiful devices! Absolutely love them. I can image there are people who are still satisfied with TV's like that, or like my BV7-40 for instance and don't want to buy a new TV but would be interested to get the newest, most fancy remote either because it's beautiful or because of it's amazing features and ease of use since 750 euros is doable. :) Other than that.... great review, once again and a really stunning new product! :D

    • @Mikipedia
      @Mikipedia  3 роки тому +4

      only reason I haven't given you a hart is that you have no improvement suggestions for the Halo lol
      I guess they feel like I do in that it's a bit silly to keep on supporting legacy products like this that they haven't made in years and years. Plus most of the screen wouldn't work over IR as there is no 2 way communication so it's a bit of a dub in that case. You can still get a beoremote 1 with IR if you want though, it's a different button layout than the BT version!

    • @Jondedy
      @Jondedy 3 роки тому +3

      @@Mikipedia Yeah, it's hard to give an improvement suggestion, since I don't own any "modern" products. All I see is a beautiful looking and working device and I need to trust your opinion on it, so I agree to it, since I have no experience with the newer products either, other than all the updates you guys give in the vids and podcast. :)
      I also understand what you mean! With computers I am exactly the same to be honest. Like: Why still support 32 bits Windows?! Buy a new PC FFS! xD But this with the remote hits me personally

    • @Mikipedia
      @Mikipedia  3 роки тому +3

      @@Jondedy Oh I in no way want to say your argument is invalid, I just meant to explain why they (B&O) did it. I wouldn't really use it but I wouldn't mind IR control, but they are not planning using IR at all anymore in future products. Any other company wouldn't give this much backwards compatibility already, most like sonos just drop support all together. But that doesn't mean B&O gets a pass either :p

    5) Touch to join product-group or all multiroom products
    6) BeoRemote Halo My Buttons which are easy to access in order to map custom outcomes (like start deezer in kitchen, TuneIn in bedroom)
    7) Setting if it should return to default product after X time or after All Standby so you always know what product you end up using when you walk by it in the morning/after work.
    8) Proximity sensor to show what's currently playing when you first approach it and then as you close in get more detailed info (like the BS35)
    9) IR-support
    10) Customizable menus (ability to order/turn off menu options)

    Hi Miki I love your positivity and enthusiasm in your vlogs! :) The design reminds me of the new Mini Cooper centre control unit - even the display before Apple CarPlay came to it :) I'm rather conflicted on your Halo display as the second that I saw it, it kind of reminds me of tech in 2005 before the days of the iPhone. Surely scrolling on your iPhone X - 11 Pro would be a more pleasant and faster experience along with the cover art on display etc? I do feel that it is an older, rich mans toy as in the 21st century, it's more about simplicity and needing less hence why the smartphone has thrived for over 12 years now - which is unusual in tech. What is your thought?

      Maybe I am an old man at heart already? lol
      I guess it's a B&O thing and for some reason people keep saying it looks choppy on video, and all I can thing of is that it may be the framerate all our camera's are in as in real life it's fast and very smooth. I personally feel that it needs some work still but it's really easy to use, especially when you have several products around the house, switching from product to product feels quicker to me than even on my phone. To me if I sit down, my phone tends to be in my pocket and reaching this remote is easier and controlling volume and skipping tracks is front and center on the Halo where as in the app it's always a click away. don't get me wrong, I like the app, but I don't like holding my phone all day. I do like holding this or having it sit next to me on the table, and it's just there to use all the time. I honestly didn't think I would use this as much as I do when I first got it, but I do. And with some improvements I could see this becoming my main remote quite easily :D

    Good thing B&O designed it to be a circle; because it looks like they cut every other corner. That display in 2020 is garbage. It should have been released with an OLED (which the Beoremote One has) instead of an LCD; preferably with a 120Hz refresh rate for future-proofing. The design itself is stunning; but even on the B&O website the software stutters in one of the demo clips. It's not useful enough to be an iPad replacement, it's too big to be a "new" Beo 5/6 (even though you have to configure it like one with the app), and that screen will glow blue in the dark even though it's intended to be black. This could have been great, could still be; but a product should never be sold on the promises of it getting better with software updates.

    • @Mikipedia
      @Mikipedia  3 роки тому +1

      I like the display, oled would've been nice but I think the pixel lifetime is a problem for oled still. Some br1's are starting to have burn in and that display is going to be on a lot less than this one is. In real life the screen isn't choppy at all. I still like it and I like where they're going with it, if that somehow fails, I like it as is enough too to keep. but everyone has their own preferences obviously :)

      @@Mikipedia Honestly, I really hope you're right and I may have been a bit harsh; but B&O doesn't seem to know what their focus is currently and it shows. I want them to stop focusing on their fashion branding/marketing and use that money to make products that warrant the price their asking. And besides; B&O don't release products frequently enough to ever justify outdated tech upon release. I genuinely love the brand and want it to succeed; but this isn't how you maintain brand loyalty. This is a product only intended for people with existing "current" B&O equipment which is a terribly small group of people to begin with; tied with the fact that it looks unfinished and the $900 price tag (basically the cost of three new iPads) makes this a hard product to justify or even recommend.
      This is the reason people argue that B&O isn't worth it's price; especially here in the US and this isn't going to help that at all. Go all the way if you're going to ask that price. Add a motorized stand like the BeoLink7000 and give the option for both wall and table orientation. Add IR support and the ability for people with existing Beo5/6 configuration profiles to use with this device. Maybe even a smaller version intended to replace the BR1 or Beo6 with a circular OLED (sourced from a smartwatch manufacturer) and that volume mechanism using the B&O app as the configurator instead of making dealers program it. Right now the Halo looks like a Nest thermostat; only worse. Soon enough B&O are going to run out of people who will make excuses for things that should have been taken care of from the start. Let's not forget that compatibility for Beo5 on release stretched back all the way to the 80's; but the product still failed and the Halo is only rated for 10 products on release without any IR support at all. A top of the line logitech harmony is $350 and controls almost everything. Halo is more than twice as much and can control almost nothing. There is a market for a high end universal remote and this design with some development could be something iconic within the B&O range; drawing an entirely new group of people to the brand. It's like being upset at someone for not trying as hard and you know they can and have in the past.
      Anyways; here's to hoping that Gen 2 will be more fleshed out.
      Cheers

Rather then them wasting their design talents on “solutions looking for problems”. @@obinna12 This is exactly the point I've been trying to make! Thank you! B&O these days is becoming a company that releases products laden with excuses and workarounds. And with their customer service being appalling; the overall experience isn't worth people buying into the brand as it stands today. I understand that for the people with B&O's current range; they've come to expect this and hold out for things to get better, but is that a rewarding experience? As we all know; B&O are closing dealer locations all around the world, and does this seem like a product that's going to fix that? Objectively no and if they ever want to "successfully" expand into the US; they need to be looking at an entry product for a "younger" audience that isn't another pair of (albeit quality) headphones. The Halo as it stands currently is nothing more than a beautify designed money grab and not enough people are holding B&O accountable for it.
