also orochimaru had full control, that being the difference between orochimaru and kabuto when they use edo tensei.
Orochimaru unlike the first time enforced no control over tobirama. So tobirama felt no need to break out of orochimaru's control.

He got betrayed once more by something he thought would never betray him. So he let his guard down. Dying by betrayal is the only way he should have died any way. Stronger than anyone else in the narutoverse. His whole life he got betrayed. So it was fine he died like this.

Both Hashirama and Tobirama *COULD* break out of it, if they wanted to. Neither saw any reason during the war arc because they weren't being controlled against their will, and Orichimaru couldn't stop them without first suppressing their power and personalities.

I’m pretty sure he’s referring to when edo tensei was used in Naruto during the fight against the third hokage. Hashirama and tobirama were both brought back and they would definitely have used the hand seal method to free themselves.

I kinda love this. In the beginning of Naruto, keeping hand signs descreet was important so your enemie couldn't either duplicate it or counter it. That fell off fast when people started spamming the same 2 jutsus.
Imagine a steam line version of naruto sort of like jujitsu kaisen / fresh high paced action, with a variety of jutsu happening/ that'd be sick

So, where did he learn the hand signs? Tobirama was never stated to use it in the war because if he did, people would definitely have talked about it. Kabuto didn’t teach it to him because why would he? That would ruin his plans. In fact, there are lots of reasons he shouldn’t know it. The fact that he knew the hand signs at all doesn’t make sense.

I think Madara used the handsigns to *cast* Edo Tensei into himself, so before his sould got unstuck from his body he "resurrected himself as his own zombie slave". Tobirama might not be aware of that interaction/feature, (also, I think the jutsu changed from his version with Orochimaru working out some kinks)
He used Rinne Rebirth on himself. It's different from Edo Tensei. Rinne Rebirth makes you Immortal again comparing to Edo Tensei you being a walking corpse controlled by someone else. This short is full of crap
Tobirama invented it so of course he knew. What Madara did was rescinding the contract with Kabuto. By doing so, i was free of his mouvements until he decided to go back to the afterlife

He didn't write himself into a corner his original plot was to have Madara as the big bad but his editor and a lot of people at jump wanted him to make a way to continue the story because they wanted it to be like the other big anime at the time

So if I say "If you know the hand signs, it's possible to create a chidori" we'd both understand that while the hand signs are _a_ requisite, they aren't _the_ requisite; you also have to be a very capable ninja with highly developed chakra transformation. See where I'm going with this?
Madara broke out because he knew the signs AND *he's a god of war, Uchiha Madara.* While Hashirama is on par with him in terms of potency, and Tobirama and Minato are on par with him in terms of ninjutsu genius, Madara is the only one who's powerful, skillful and _aware_ enough to get revived in the midst of war and not only quickly notice a flaw in the Edo Tensei, but also exploit it to his advantage. Minato and Tobirama could probably do it too, but they'd need time to figure it out; time they won't have in the midst of battle. Hashirama is simply too carefree to consider doing so unless he absolutely had to, even if he was explicitly aware that it was possible.
Also good guys always act funny when you bring them back from the dead. All that "I shouldn't be here. My time has passed. The world doesn't need me anymore" BS. I'd be like f*ck allat bro bring me back 😂 but the hokage may have been thinking along the lines of "cheating death is not the way to win" and so refused to tamper with the Edo Tensei

@@seventoast That's how it worked for Kakashi when he used Water Dragon; he did the hand signs, and it worked. He didn't know the jutsu before fighting Zabuza. Also, why would Madara know the hand signs? If he did know them, why didn't he use them to bring his brother back or help him win the war? There is really no reason he should know it. Why wouldn’t he have used it sooner you know like before he died of old age. Orochimaru couldn't have taught him, and neither would Tobirama or Kabuto. They definitely wouldn't have allowed him to learn it. There are far more reasons as to why he would’ve known the jutsu; than there are saying he would.
He was literally being released from Kabuto's Edi Tensei, when he did it on himself. Like the guy in the first reply said, but he couldn't have done it if he wasn't being released by it, that's so fcking obvious that I have no idea why it's so hard to get for some people.

Main thing is, how the f did he know the signs? Nobody taught him. When dud he see them? A quick clarifying flashback wouldn't have killed kishi.

Why would he allow people he perceived as enemies especially Madara to learn a jutsu such as that? If he learned it why wouldn't he use it against Hashirama in their big climactic fight as well? The point is kishi never gave us an explanation and it deserved one without one it's a plot hole.

I always loved how half way through Shippuden Kishimoto just either forgot all the rules he established or just didn’t care.
Kishi does this and everyone yells “asspull.” Gege Akutami does the exact same type of thing and no one bats an eye.
This may come off as egotistical but people will come to realize Gege does it too like thats just a fact. This happens with every overhyped anime, people dont recognize any of the flaws and cope and say "he has a plan". After jjk ends that excuse won't work anymore and people will start to see the problems with the series.

Oh I thought that if you knew the hand signs for eso tensei that when it’s broken you can keep your self in your vessel by weaving the hand signs , but you can’t just brake his control by using the hand signs at anytime
You could technically break their control too, but an Edo Tensei caster with any sense wouldn’t let the Reanimation weave those hand signs- they can paralyze them in an instant to prevent it. So Madara waited until it became obvious to him that the caster had released the jutsu and given up control of the Reanimations before he tried freeing himself altogether.

In the case of orochimaru summoning the senju Brothers against hiruzen he used cursed seals that reinforced the control method of edo tensai which weakened them more but made them easier to control. In a flashback episode we see orochimaru use edo to bring back 3rd kazekage to fight puppet 3rd kazekage and while the edo version was winning he had a key phrase mentioned that made him break the control and will himself back to death which would probably be used as in universe justification for why orochimaru made the cursed seals he used on the senju bros to keep them under control.

This could be explained by the fact that both Tobirama and Hashirama were torn away from the Pure Lands by Orochimaru summoning and Hiruzen then Repaer Death Sealing them.
They were both in the Pure Lands up to that point, and then neither one was able to return, so they probably just wanted to go back, since you apparently keep the awareness of your time in the Pure Lands.

What's crazier us that the edo tensei used on madara was changed by 2 different people but those signs still worked.

I always thought it was a variation of Reverse Summoning. Instead of the person getting summoned back, it's the contract that gets reversed, effectively erasing the bond between the summoner and the summoned from existence.
When it came to the 4 hokage who were reanimated they had no need to break it because it wasn't activated in a servant form, they were brought back without any restrictions.
Tobirama and Hashirama had reason not to break out of Orochimaru's "control" for lack of a better term in that situation; because if they broke out, and Orochimaru releases it, they'd be *stuck*in their edo tensei bodies.
Madara broke himself free only when doing so meant he could keep fighting as and edo tensei reanimation as opposed to being taken out of play.

Personal head Canon that only works if you assume hand signs are short cuts and not static inputs. If the signs are short cuts for molding your chakra then you can cast multiple jutsus many different ways. For example we see multiple people use water dragon jutsu and with the exception of Zabuza and Kakashi they all use different hand signs to cast it. So although Kabuto uses edo tensi you don't know what hand signs he weaved to use the jutsu. Add a splash of Zetsu was spying on the Kabuto, Sauske, and Itachi fight and you have an easy relay back to his edo ally Madera
I think a better way to do it would’ve been to have be the ten tails and either have the regeneration it provides just revive him or have him say that with all that power he could break Edo Tensei. Maybe have the effort still weaken him a little for his fight against Naruto and Sasuke where they eventually defeat him before Zetsu kills him.
Lord Second may not have known that Madara knew the seals to Edo Tensei and figured the fight was finally over.
Orochimaru did say to himself that both Hashirama and Tobirama could break free from the control at any time when they first brought back the Kage but decided not to. My guess is that Tobirama wanted to learn more of the motivation of Sasuke before acting and Hashirama wanted to play the diplomat before making a decision

I think they should've actually let Madara be killed by Itachi's reversal of Edo Tensei, just as he's about to kill the 5 Kage. Then, for the good chunk of the War arc we'd have Obito as the sole main villain. Then, after Juubito is defeated, Black Zetsu does what he originally did and takes over Obito, performs Rinne Rebirth, and revives Madara. Yeah we'd have less time with Madara, but it's better than the Deus Ex Machina they gave us as to how he survived.
Remember that Orochimaru had him bound with the added Hashirama cells in his body

I think this plot-hole can be covered up as it being akin to a summoning reverse summoning back to where they came, even if the timer for the summoning jutsu is still active. But, assuming it takes more chakra to return to the Pure Land, the Edo Tensei, if the y have enough chakra pool, can only break the contract between the original user and make themselves the new user of the Edo Tensei.

I always assumed the how was by performing edo tensi on himself while already in that state he took control of himself away like if tsunade tried to summon hashirama it would transfer control of him to her much the same way as it achieved was able to use the crow to koto amasukami himself to the Shinobu alliance

And that's why I see canon sources as guides rather rules. Too many times, the authors of these sources are not consistent even with their own stuff. Example: you would think that Might Guy would have created the Sage version of the Hidden Lotus, thereby surpassing the Gate of Death, with something like, oh, the Gate of Rebirth, symbolizing the bonds of one's mortality being discarded. Heck, throw in a dragon motif in the mix, if you want Guy to learn how and from whom he was able to surpass his limits from.

It’s entirely possible that Madara realized he was going to disappear from it being released and he just said “fuckit” and tried to do it on himself to see if it would work. It’s very well could have been a on the spot last ditch effort. I’d imagine that neither Tobirama or Hashirama were ever in a position where the jutsu was being released and they had a reason to stay. He may have created the jutsu but that doesn’t mean he knows every in and out about how it functions. It’s probably only possible to do if the jutsu is released and you do it before your body fades away. The only time Tobirama and Hasirama were ever on the receiving end of the jutsu was when Orochimaru brought them back, the only time they were being released from the jutsu was after the war was over, they had no reason to stay so and they probably were unaware they could perform it on themselves.

I mean if madara is to be a generational-strongest in the universe shinobi it makes sense that he could spy in on Tobirama & konoha’s activities especially w black zetsu, on top of him doing exactly that accidentally (albeit in an anime filler scene) when overhearing the hashirama & tobirama’s conversation.
It wouldn’t be the longest stretch in naruto to assume that Madara, the Sasuke to our unseen manga knew the ins & outs of edo tensei
It’s probably like when someone realizes they are in a Genjutsu and knows how to release it.
Honestly, there's an easy fix for this from a writing perspective: Orochimaru already said that he used a modified version of Edo Tensei to bring back Madara in his prime. So just have the modified version be an invention of Madara.
1) It makes sense Madara would want to one-up Tobirama by making an improved version of his own jutsu.
2) It would justify Madara having a back door to escape it.
3) It would be a much simpler and easier to accept way for Madara to have planned his ressurection instead of the "time-released reality warping jutsu" that Kishimoto went with instead.

@@nmbalo there’s no other way he would’ve had their DNA, think about it, madara was feeding off the power of the Gedo statue so I’d argue that Zetsu got his DNA that way, plus Zetsu was meant to betray obito

What did Tobirama mean when he said “If only I can use my Forbidden Jutsu on him” that was when Säsuke was the floor dying and tobirama had rods on his back. Was it indicating he had a power too help Sasuke’s “Verge of Death” State?
Temporal paradox resulting in contradictions in time, especially of the characters who were in the singularity at the end of remake. Zach fighting Shinra is the inflection point.
I don't think it's multiple timelines, it's not even parallel worlds. It's a single timeline that is experiencing temporal paradoxes, that's why you have small changes, like Stamp, and big changes like Zack being alive, and the party either dead or in a coma. When we step through the barrier of whispers-which Aerith manipulates beforehand the game makes sure that the player knows we are inside of a singularity. The whispers combine into the harbinger, to try and protect the natural flow of time but we defeat them, and Sepherioth -who absorbs them, and the party comes out of the singularity outside of Midgar unaware that time was altered. Being inside the singularity means that they were unaffected by the time alterations. Zack's fight against the Shinra army is the point at which time changed but our party from the events leading up to and including the singularity still exists. The whispers tried to kill us so that there would not be two versions of the party existing in the single altered timeline.
To be fair, Orochimaru sealed Tobirama's hands and free will.

It's more likely that he designed Edo Tensei with that flaw in mind.
The fact that only Madara counter-spelled Itachi more likely means that Tobirama made a miscalculation - falsly assuming Madara would lose to Edo Tensei. As a result he either chose to let he soul be recalled by edo tensei because he didn't think Madara was capable of countering it, OR he didn't know that countering Edo Tensei was possible.
Either way, Kishimoto likely designed the counter to Edo Tensei when it was first introduced into the universe, long before Madara countered it
So the fact that it took 300 episodes in the anime for a single character to counter it actually adds to the power level of the the jutsu. I would actually give props to kishimoto for thinking so far ahead

I honestly think it would have been better for Madara to go full badass mode and fight Hashirama to a standstill before the jutsu was broken and he faded away. Like, him not losing would be the best way to end that fight. I got bored and never finished the war arc, so idk how it does end, but that guy deserves at least a tie. And they both deserve more buildup than they got

the problem with this is people forget that random characters invented jutsu. meaning you can literally do anything you want with chakra as long as you know how, including countering or breaking any and all of the forbidden jutsu.

I feel like they're not breaking themselves out of it but they're using the short time to use it on themselves because that makes way more sense because if someone just undid the jutsu technically they're not under edo tensei anymore and but they are still in the world and can use jutsu so they edo tensei

Better question: what shinobi figured this out? Had to be stronger than the ET user AND know the hand signs AND decided to just randomly do them? And probably powerful enough not to be already named and summoned into the war arc?
