This has got to be one of the best arguments for Substack and Patreon that I’ve seen. Weirdly I’m watching it on UA-cam. But it really makes me realize I need to get back to those subscription platforms to really see the folks I enjoy the most. I’ll find you over there! Thank you again! 💙
Happy belated New Year, Shenae! I've been a fan of your channel for a very long time, and I appreciate you being yourself always. I do hope you'll eventually venture into screenwriting, because you being a writer intrigues me the most. :)
This was so beautifully said and articulated very much how I’ve been feeling about social media. You are so right in questioning what is the cost of free content? I find myself empty and numb with the majority of content I’m consuming. With Substack if you pay monthly is it solely your content or Substack as a whole? I’m very intrigued.
I absolutely love this messaging! Thank you for putting this out there, not everyone would 😌 I’ve massively reduced my engagement with free social media because without paying for it, WE are all the commodity and that’s scary. And because the routes that it’s taking socially and politically, the control and mass manipulations that are at once completely abstract in their doing but that we stare at for hours a day. Eeeek. And so many other reasons too. Paid for content slows the process right down. For the creator and the consumer. If someone is paying for something, that demands a certain level of quality and thought in return that will organically be higher than more instant content. There’s thought processes involved like: ‘do I want to invest in this?’ Rather than the decision being taken out of your hands in a myriad of and in abstract ways. You might also ask: ‘Can I afford to invest in this?’ Something you’ll re-decide often. And if you choose to invest, there’s regular reminders like notifications from your bank that the payment will leave your account, email invoices that show you in black and white. Everything slows down and it puts a hearty amount of the decision making back in our hands. I love UA-cam, which is essentially free, but I’m thoughtful about who I follow and by caring about the input and work of the creator, I watch through ads and watch to the end if the video to support them. So again it slows things down, I’m deciding and also choosing what I’m exposed to. We need more creatives seeing this and leaning in to the discomfort of charging for their art.
I get what you're saying about social media but for me, UA-cam is different. I only subscribe to maybe 20 channels, only those that I really enjoy the content of. Would love to see your vlogs on here again (as a subscriber) but understand you are moving in a different direction
When you would do your weekly videos on UA-cam, I very much looked forward to it. I'm really bummed that you are changing how you post your videos. I can't afford to add another subscription. I guess I will just try to look for you on here whenever I can..... Thank you so much for all of the entertainment over the years, though. You were great on the 90210 reboot!
I really admire and appreciate how real and raw you are. Thank you for sharing this-these are very true and valid points. I’ve been thinking about these things for a while and this is giving me the push I need to be more mindful/disciplined when it comes to the time I spend on those specific platforms-thank you for that. I have always enjoyed what you and your family share and am very grateful there are people like you as content creators. Keep doing your thing! 🫶
Great video and I absolutely agree with you. We are not in control of what we are being shown on social media. I logged into my Facebook account today and found that Facebook had automatically taken it upon themselves and auto made my account follow the new President, Vice President, and First Lady without my consent. I unfollowed and blocked all three of those pages. But the big worry is that this is something simple that I noticed in my feed. What is being done that I’m not noticing. In 2025 I want more control of what content I choose to view and I do not want forced content.
I hardly spend time on anything else-I’m either on UA-cam, watching movies and TV with my husband, or reading books. Social media doesn’t interest me; all my feeds are just book recommendations anyway. It’s funny how people get sucked into watching pointless content! Stupid people. If I can filter it so can you or just avoid it like I do. Easy.

Thank you for sharing this - as not a content creator this was very informative and a very interesting point of view!

Trump's greatest stunt yet

No way I'm paying for anything.
I have no social media just UA-cam, books, Netflix. I have hobbys and a live. 😊
