Two wires supply current across the string and two sense the voltage drop with a high impedance device...I have used this technique many times in the past for precision resistance measurement.
Would you be able to do this by putting graphite on rubber bands or on those stretch cloth strings (tightly knit cloth outside, stretchy filaments on the inside) to make a smaller tension sensor with less parts?
