    The house at the bend in the road at Guernsey and Oak used to be a home for the aged during the early 20th century

    Back in the eighties you wouldn't walk that area it was dirty over crowded and drug infested. It's beautiful to see what can happen if people care about thier communities and remain instead of abandoning thier communities. It wasn't easy but through great grass roots organizations and perseverance this is possible for all communities.

    Dutchie here. Just getting into your walks when I saw you on ActionKids / Jon Barrs channels. 👍
    The beer place at 39:48 : "Brouwerij" is Dutch for brewery. ("Boerderij" would be the Dutch word for farm - pretty similar)

      Welcome Eduard! Thanks for watching :D and that's interesting about Brouwerij! I initially thought they were making a play-on-words from NYC's Bowery neighborhood, that name itself is an Anglicization of "boerderij". But glad to hear that is the real Dutch word for brewery, so cool!

    I wonder if a pedestrian walkway between LIC & Greenpoint is now just a distant dream given the massive financial crunch NY is facing.

    • @UrbanistExploringCities
      @UrbanistExploringCities  3 роки тому

      that's a good question! Interestingly throughout NYC's history, some of the biggest construction projects were done during a period of economic turmoil like Rockefeller Center. But then again a pedestrian bridge is probably low priority for economic development, especially with no tourism
