Harri, the drummer is Liberty DeVitto. He was Billy's studio and touring drummer from 1976-2006. Liberty always has been maniacal behind the kit. On another note, if this clip was from Wembley in 1984, Liberty's second child (daughter Torrey Joel DeVitto, who is an actress, born June 8, 1984) was on her way; supposedly, during a 1984 Wembley show (I don't know if there was more than one), Billy announced the impending birth right before performing "The Longest Time".

The theme song to Tom Hanks' first major acting gig: a sitcom called Bosom Buddies that ran from 1980-1982. Worth a watch. Great cast. I don't think he wrote it for the show, but they used it.

This song about asserting your independence was the theme to the 1980 television sitcom Bosom Buddies - the one that introduced many of us to Tom Hanks. However, because of licensing issues, the title theme was not Joel's version and was sung by a soundalike singer.
Allegedly, the verse "closed the shop, sold the house, bought a ticket to the west coast; now he gives them a stand up routine in LA" refers to comedian Richard Lewis. Lewis is indeed native to Joel's stomping ground, born in New York City and raised in New Jersey.

    • @thatrobguy

The Richard Lewis thing is an urban legend. It’s one I repeated for years myself before someone finally asked Billy about it and he flatly denied.

    • @irabourstein

@@thatrobguy And for whatever it's worth, I knew Lewis. He didn't; have a shop to close, or a house to sell. He was barely getting by on standup and part-time work.

So he kept it wrapped up to keep the whole thing stable, because he does pound on the keyboard!

In primary school, a classmate of mine, (not grasping sarcasm yet) misunderstood me when I said, "Yeah, and Billy Joel is my uncle". I meant it as a statement like yeah, when pigs fly, or that'll be the day. Instead, he spread the rumor until I was chastised for spreading lies. Billy was in my top 5 as a child. (Beatles, Queen, Foghat, Temptations, and Ronnie and the Ronnettes). I grew up in the 70s and 80s (the best time for rock music 1968-1976)

In 1982 he had a motorcycle accident and he injured both hands, he broken his fingers and lost the bone on the left thumb, I think he had like some implant or metal wire in the thumb, because until late 1987 he used that plaster on his thumb. Also he changed his piano playing way.

4:52 sometimes Billy will improvise on a song to change it up a bit from the studio recording, so I think where he holds up three fingers it is to signal that he will be singing:
    'Don't-don't-don't get me wrong'
Whereas the studio recording just says:
    'Don't get me wrong'.

The drummer, Liberty DeVitto, absolutely HATED playing this particular song, as he's stated many times, even though he actually came up with a line for lyrics ("Either way it's okay you wake up with yourself" was Liberty's line).
He always smashed the heck out of the drums, but particularly on this one, partly in protest. Also his baby was born during this show.
