  • So with gyms still being closed a lot of us are able to do mainly cardio. So the question becomes what kind of cardio is best. In this video I break down my thoughts on just that. I will also give you my top choices for cardio for both fat loss and heart health. As a bodybuilder you need to pick your cardio correctly so you don't eat up to much muscle and can still have a good workout with less calories. Let me know what your favorite type of cardio is.       Swiming is easy for people with long
      People with positive ape index i think juji mentioned that you had ape index of +2inch,it also mean your swiming style would consist more long stroke rather than rapid stroke.

    Walking is seriously underrated, just normal paced walking, i do a 15k walk 3 days a week and it keeps my calves and legs in good shape on top of gym of course. Walking is also good for cleaning up the mind, you can get a lot of stuff sorted up there while walking

    The greatest cardio is the ONE THAT DOES NOT PUT STRESS ON YOUR KNEES AND DOES NOT DAMAGE YOUR LOWER BACK. You can do mountain hiking, swimming, rollerblading, biking... I love rollerblading. I might get into swimming this year. I wish someone showed me how to play tennis.

    I like the thumbnail! I love how John seems to have such a healthy happy relationship with his kids. Despite being a master bodybuilder with a manly physique he's goofy and playful with his children. So cool. Seems like someone that's be great to hang out with and also to learn from. I'd like to know how he balances everything whenever I'm single and introducing working out consistently seems like a big step to me. (I've been consistent for a few weeks now. Gained 8lbs after being underweight)

    I've been doing high incline treadmill for past 11 weeks. At first it was as you said - it felt like calf and feet workout. But after 8 weeks or so, I didn't feel it anymore. For me right now the limiting factor of my cardio (i worked it up to 15% incline and speed between 5 and 6 km\h) is how hot and sweaty I get and overall exhaustion.

      Running is hard on my joints and causes pain so I tend to do the high incline too so that I get the intensity. But after your 11 weeks, were you getting leg gains or losing your gains from the cardio assuming your are bodybuilding?

    I used to hate ellipticals. Then one day early AM at the gym I started using one for warm-up after avoiding them at all costs. I felt how it gets your blood flowing without impact, and you can even get creative with the upper body assistance if you feel like it. Now I love them and consider them the best cardio option overall, taking everything into account. So it's good to see they are Mountain Dog approved haha

    Seventy-five years old 5' 7" 150 lbs. Been working out for 25 years. After years of working out with dumbbells I decided that at my advanced age I should work out with barbells, so I bought a Rogue RML 690 Power Rack and sat it up in my basement. I know, I feel for the people who can't work out because of the Covid shutdown. I've been doing progressive overload for the past year and loving it. I like your idea of cardio. Years ago (1990's) I bought a Nordic Track and fell in love with it. Initially I did "steady state" jogging on it, but here in the past year I've been doing HIIT and found a new love for the machine. I know it's old school, but I can adjust the arm resistance, leg resistance, and incline, plus I can determine the speed at which I run. I run full out for thirty seconds, catch my breath and repeat nine more times for a total of 20 minutes twice a week. I do this primarily for the health benefits. I've found that I don't get winded as quickly as I used to plus I cut my cardio time by 30 - 40 minutes. I love your down-to-earth advice and use it often. Keep talking to us.

    Seriously, I wish everyone who lifts weights could watch this video. The stigma surrounding cardio is by far the most annoying and persistent ideology in the weight training community. John you always amaze me with how informed you are; the way you present information and the quality of that information is seriously unparalleled.     Jump rope is the most underrated form of cardio in terms of burning fat and improving cardio vascular condition. 10/3 min rounds or 12/3 min rounds is great. Boxers,k1 fighters, muay thai fighters, mma fighters do jump rope on a regular basis and they have great cardio conditioning and also have very less body fat. God bless you john.

    A few months ago the Dr. told me I needed to be on heart medication for hypertension. Been told this many times throughout life. (31) Just applying the lessons from knowledgeable people like John and Jeff Nippard brought me down from 240 to 210, ran my first mile in years without getting winded. Truly ran with quads engaged, lungs working. Feels great. Couldn't be more appreciative of all the work these guys do.

      That's excellent!! Feels good does it not! If it starts to impair your ability to recover and you still want to run, look at natural running or chi running. It's a little less impactfull on the knees.

    I do stairwell sprints. At 53 the need for better heart health is just as important as building muscle. I've noticed that my appetite is much greater because of this type of cardio. That's another benefit in order to eat for muscle gains.

    Great video, John! I have a spin bike in my home gym because you can buy a good sturdy spin bike for a fraction of the cost of a high-quality solid elliptical. Yesterday, I decided to go out for a walk instead of my indoor spin-bike cardio. Since I don't walk every often, it causes my hips and legs to be sore afterwards. The good kind of sore, though. What's nice about walking outside is you can move your hips and legs more freely than being restricted to a cardio machine. Plus you can get some healthy sun and feel a nice breeze.

    Absolutely agree and a big part of this is how "fun" the activity is (to your point about swimming). I genuinely enjoy swimming or riding a bike outdoors and before you know it you have an activity where you are burning 300-600+ calories and it's actually fun. For someone like myself who isn't competing and really does a lot of cardio for health the "fun factor" is a huge ranking factor.

    Love the suggestions, John. Definitely agree that the rower may not be an ideal cardio choice. It’s my personal favorite, but I rowed for my university so I know the proper technique. Outside of crew, I’ve almost never seen a person row correctly in the gym. Far too often they begin pulling with their arms before full knee extension or they fail to maintain posture through the movement. Sad to hear it doesn’t work well with your lower back! Keep up the great content.

    my favorite is the elliptical if you up the intensity gradually you can ease yourself into a decently intense workout. Same goes for maximum incline (usually 10 degrees) walks. You can easily get up to 7 calories per minute with both of these

    I hit 40 min 6 days a week on tread at 15% at 2.0-2.5MPH, NO HANDS. It kicks my ass. My HR averages 130-140bpm. Usually burn about 325-350 calories each session. I’m 53.

    i am doing inline skating. love it. used to run a lot but got some injuries from it eventually, a bit of pain in the knees and the left hip + a lot of pain in the ankles every time i´d be running more often, so i just stopped doing it. the inlines are super fun, i´m doing around 11km in 35-40mins with a slight break in the middle. no pain at all. my endurance became much stronger since i started. the only negative i am aware of is that sometimes, on the deadlift/back day the lower back hurts a bit (to a no surprise).

    Beard's looking good John! I (Powerlifter) ike to do martial arts twice a week. Muay Thai usually. I find it fun, and it has the bonus of self-defence.

    I was recommended swimming by orthopaedic surgeons and physios because it builds stamina in your core stability. A lot of the normal core stability exercises are quite brief and focus on strength only, but you need your core to be stable for long periods if you have an injury there.

    Personally, whenever I train legs hard, heavy lifts, supersets etc I'm normally out of breath to the same level when I played soccer. But I never get that way when I do any push or pull exercises.

    Awesome advice!
    I think that if you are moderately fit, high intensity exercise might be easy/ok.
    However, if you are just starting to exercise (perhaps after a break), low intensity (but for a long time) is better.
    For example: treadmill, at 3 mph, 3 degrees of incline, for 1 hours is a good start.

      North Paul I race motorcycle and to improve my speed, I need to get way fitter and stronger. I work nearly every day and haven’t stopped because of the virus. I just need time to fit it in. There’s no excuse really. It makes me realise how tough bodybuilding is and how much will power you need to push yourself every single day...

    HIIT is great for fitness/conditioning, and is great of you play a sport like football/soccer where you have to do exactly that - quick explosive bursts of sprinting interspersed with jogging/walking. However, for a bodybuilder, it's super demanding on your recovery, and also depletes the energy systems you need for weight lifting. Not to mention if you're 240lbs you don't really want to be doing high impact cardio! Your poor knees and ankles! great video as always John, swimming is very underrated.

    Since quarantine started I just do 7-10K steps a day every day and lost quite a bit of weight. Band workouts are being done on giant set manners to tax the respiratory system and to get a new stimulus in the muscle.

    I heard this a while ago, and I believe it to be true.. all-out sprinting is an excellent way to kick the body into fat-burning mode, versus jogging at a moderate pace for longer.. So when I want to burn fat (like now that I dont' climb any towers) I make sure to go all-out on a jumprope, or running... even though I can't run fast for long, dang it feels good afterwards!

    Lipolysis is dependant on duration. Just as anaerobic and aerobic glycolysis are time dependant they also determine what is used for energy. It also improves insulin sensitivity and lowers blood pressure.

    Calling rowing "ok" must be the understatement of the year. Its an excellent fullbody exercise that is just as efficient at burning kcal. as the assault bike. The only drawback is that it requires good technique and time to get used to. Otherwise the lower back is gonna get crisp in no time.
    Maybe im giving you a bit of a hard time on this, but I just felt it needed a bit more explaining :)

    Walking is underrated, especially at an incline at a moderate pace. I also think jogging is important, it's a basic human movement people forget about. I try to walk everyday though👍

    Havent watched yet, but ive been doing some jump rope circuits for my cardio and i love it. Body hardly takes a beating too. It'll go something like 20 sec jump rope, 10 sec rest, 20 sec body weight exercise, 10 sec rest etc with different exercises. Is a blast.

    I think running/jogging is better done outside than on a treadmill because the rotating mechanism of a treadmill makes it so you're sort of hopping in place vs propelling yourself forward
