John you always amaze me with how informed you are; the way you present information and the quality of that information is seriously unparalleled. I hope to keep hearing from you for many many more years. Thank you for always keeping it 100!!!
A few months ago the Dr. told me I needed to be on heart medication for hypertension. Been told this many times throughout life. (31) Just applying the lessons from knowledgeable people like John and Jeff Nippard brought me down from 240 to 210, ran my first mile in years without getting winded. Truly ran with quads engaged, lungs working. Feels great. Couldn't be more appreciative of all the work these guys do.

Seventy-five years old 5' 7" 150 lbs. Been working out for 25 years. After years of working out with dumbbells I decided that at my advanced age I should work out with barbells, so I bought a Rogue RML 690 Power Rack and sat it up in my basement. I know, I feel for the people who can't work out because of the Covid shutdown. I've been doing progressive overload for the past year and loving it. I like your idea of cardio. Years ago (1990's) I bought a Nordic Track and fell in love with it. Initially I did "steady state" jogging on it, but here in the past year I've been doing HIIT and found a new love for the machine. I know it's old school, but I can adjust the arm resistance, leg resistance, and incline, plus I can determine the speed at which I run. I run full out for thirty seconds, catch my breath and repeat nine more times for a total of 20 minutes twice a week. I do this primarily for the health benefits. I've found that I don't get winded as quickly as I used to plus I cut my cardio time by 30 - 40 minutes. I love your down-to-earth advice and use it often. Keep talking to us.
Hope your well champ, you’re one of the only guys in the industry and their is very few I have found that gives honest, realistic and reliable information and honesty some of the best content in general. I felt absolutely devastated hearing the news on your medical condition in the last couple of weeks but very happy to hear your recovering well. You’re the positive figure the people involved in bodybuilding, power lifting and weight lifting in general whether professionally or as a hobby should be listening too and taking advice from. Thanks for everything mate and all the best for your future. Much love.
I like the thumbnail! I love how John seems to have such a healthy happy relationship with his kids. Despite being a master bodybuilder with a manly physique he's goofy and playful with his children. So cool. Seems like someone that's be great to hang out with and also to learn from. I'd like to know how he balances everything whenever I'm single and introducing working out consistently seems like a big step to me. (I've been consistent for a few weeks now. Gained 8lbs after being underweight)
I used to hate ellipticals. Then one day early AM at the gym I started using one for warm-up after avoiding them at all costs. I felt how it gets your blood flowing without impact, and you can even get creative with the upper body assistance if you feel like it. Now I love them and consider them the best cardio option overall, taking everything into account. So it's good to see they are Mountain Dog approved haha
I do stairwell sprints. At 53 the need for better heart health is just as important as building muscle. I've noticed that my appetite is much greater because of this type of cardio. That's another benefit in order to eat for muscle gains.
I've been doing high incline treadmill for past 11 weeks. At first it was as you said - it felt like calf and feet workout. But after 8 weeks or so, I didn't feel it anymore. For me right now the limiting factor of my cardio (i worked it up to 15% incline and speed between 5 and 6 km\h) is how hot and sweaty I get and overall exhaustion.
Running is hard on my joints and causes pain so I tend to do the high incline too so that I get the intensity. But after your 11 weeks, were you getting leg gains or losing your gains from the cardio assuming your are bodybuilding?
Jump rope is the most underrated form of cardio in terms of burning fat and improving cardio vascular condition. 10/3 min rounds or 12/3 min rounds is great. Boxers,k1 fighters, muay thai fighters, mma fighters do jump rope on a regular basis and they have great cardio conditioning and also have very less body fat. God bless you john.
Thank you for being such a great source of information, and for being such a great father to your son. As a former public school teacher, I can tell you we need more men in our youth's lives like you!
hey John i’m a super heavyweight Powerlifter who loves bodybuilding and you’re just about the only guy i listen to for real bodybuilding advice thanks!
I hit 40 min 6 days a week on tread at 15% at 2.0-2.5MPH, NO HANDS. It kicks my ass. My HR averages 130-140bpm. Usually burn about 325-350 calories each session. I’m 53.
my favorite is the elliptical if you up the intensity gradually you can ease yourself into a decently intense workout. Same goes for maximum incline (usually 10 degrees) walks. You can easily get up to 7 calories per minute with both of these
God bless Mountain Dog. Pure gold. I enjoy my fasted cardio (either cycle or outdoor walk) in the morning and Muay Thai twice a week keeps my cardio in check. Your right about outside being fun. Me and the wife walked 2 miles at 5:30am today and talked the whole time. Therapy
Lipolysis is dependant on duration. Just as anaerobic and aerobic glycolysis are time dependant they also determine what is used for energy. It also improves insulin sensitivity and lowers blood pressure.
Walking is underrated, especially at an incline at a moderate pace. I also think jogging is important, it's a basic human movement people forget about. I try to walk everyday though👍
Personally, whenever I train legs hard, heavy lifts, supersets etc I'm normally out of breath to the same level when I played soccer. But I never get that way when I do any push or pull exercises.
I was recommended swimming by orthopaedic surgeons and physios because it builds stamina in your core stability. A lot of the normal core stability exercises are quite brief and focus on strength only, but you need your core to be stable for long periods if you have an injury there.
Absolutely agree and a big part of this is how "fun" the activity is (to your point about swimming). I genuinely enjoy swimming or riding a bike outdoors and before you know it you have an activity where you are burning 300-600+ calories and it's actually fun. For someone like myself who isn't competing and really does a lot of cardio for health the "fun factor" is a huge ranking factor.
Dude!, you look like a beast in that pool! I really admire you because we are really close in age and you're a great guy in general, just my opinion from all your videos Ive seen and still watch regularly.
North Paul I race motorcycle and to improve my speed, I need to get way fitter and stronger. I work nearly every day and haven’t stopped because of the virus. I just need time to fit it in. There’s no excuse really. It makes me realise how tough bodybuilding is and how much will power you need to push yourself every single day...
If I made just a teensy bit more i'd splurge on a LifeTime membership. The location is just a bit a ways away for me to justify spending 150/month on a place id only be able to hit 2-3 times a week. Great vid as always john.
Calling rowing "ok" must be the understatement of the year. Its an excellent fullbody exercise that is just as efficient at burning kcal. as the assault bike. The only drawback is that it requires good technique and time to get used to. Otherwise the lower back is gonna get crisp in no time. Maybe im giving you a bit of a hard time on this, but I just felt it needed a bit more explaining :)
HIIT is great for fitness/conditioning, and is great of you play a sport like football/soccer where you have to do exactly that - quick explosive bursts of sprinting interspersed with jogging/walking. However, for a bodybuilder, it's super demanding on your recovery, and also depletes the energy systems you need for weight lifting. Not to mention if you're 240lbs you don't really want to be doing high impact cardio! Your poor knees and ankles! great video as always John, swimming is very underrated.
Since quarantine started I just do 7-10K steps a day every day and lost quite a bit of weight. Band workouts are being done on giant set manners to tax the respiratory system and to get a new stimulus in the muscle.
Havent watched yet, but ive been doing some jump rope circuits for my cardio and i love it. Body hardly takes a beating too. It'll go something like 20 sec jump rope, 10 sec rest, 20 sec body weight exercise, 10 sec rest etc with different exercises. Is a blast.
@@mountaindog1 yep, 20 min of that outside and im drenched down to my underwear lol dropped good 10 lbs doing it and its only a little over a month. love your stuff man!
Awesome advice! I think that if you are moderately fit, high intensity exercise might be easy/ok. However, if you are just starting to exercise (perhaps after a break), low intensity (but for a long time) is better. For example: treadmill, at 3 mph, 3 degrees of incline, for 1 hours is a good start.
I heard this a while ago, and I believe it to be true.. all-out sprinting is an excellent way to kick the body into fat-burning mode, versus jogging at a moderate pace for longer.. So when I want to burn fat (like now that I dont' climb any towers) I make sure to go all-out on a jumprope, or running... even though I can't run fast for long, dang it feels good afterwards!
I think running/jogging is better done outside than on a treadmill because the rotating mechanism of a treadmill makes it so you're sort of hopping in place vs propelling yourself forward
Thank you for the wealth of information you give us John. We appreciate it. Don't know if I'll be shredded by the time things go back to normal, but I'm going to be in better shape than I was when it all started. Keep up the good work buddy!💪
Usually just walk for an hour on rest days, seems to help recovery on my legs and burns some calories. If i had the choice i would go swimming for sure though.
i am doing inline skating. love it. used to run a lot but got some injuries from it eventually, a bit of pain in the knees and the left hip + a lot of pain in the ankles every time i´d be running more often, so i just stopped doing it. the inlines are super fun, i´m doing around 11km in 35-40mins with a slight break in the middle. no pain at all. my endurance became much stronger since i started. the only negative i am aware of is that sometimes, on the deadlift/back day the lower back hurts a bit (to a no surprise).
I'm seeing a few people bringing up Greg Doucette. John is talking about cardiovascular health, Greg recommends incline walks to burn calories and help create a caloric deficit. They're not disagreeing, those are two different objectives.
Great video, John! I have a spin bike in my home gym because you can buy a good sturdy spin bike for a fraction of the cost of a high-quality solid elliptical. Yesterday, I decided to go out for a walk instead of my indoor spin-bike cardio. Since I don't walk every often, it causes my hips and legs to be sore afterwards. The good kind of sore, though. What's nice about walking outside is you can move your hips and legs more freely than being restricted to a cardio machine. Plus you can get some healthy sun and feel a nice breeze.
Especially in today’s state, outside cardio has kept me sane! Makes me feel youthful too. As if I’m playing youth sports again. Thank you for the video John.
Hi John I just wanted to let u know very glad you pulled out of that heart attack ok. I watch your videos all the time you one of the few I do watch because you don't cuss all the time. I make sure my wife and I putt u in are prayers. The Man upstairs looked after you ok. Keep in touch with us out here when u get back and regain your health back. Get well soon from Charles 👍👍
John, you mentioned the cardio machine "calories burned" calculations possibly being inaccurate which is likely true. It would also be important for people to realize, these usually calculate gross calories burned as opposed to net calories burned. This distinction can be really useful in dialing in your TDEE like you mentioned.
I've been saying this for years guys I love swimming, fast paced just for 20 minutes and maaaan that pump is amazing. Screw running where you damage your knees.
@@mountaindog1 I have a question for you. Can you talk about muscle imbalancement and how to fix that? Muscles from left side are smaller than right. In my case, left pec is smaller than right one. I think it is because i dont have a good mind muscle conection with my left pec. when i contract my pecs, right one contract more... Thank you 👍✌
Just talking from my own experience as a natural. I'm not bringing the "natural" up to discredit enhanced lifters at all, but to point out (like John has done before) that your body simlpy won't be able to handle as much as a natty. I have played basketball at a quite high level for some years, but on top of that been a fitness instructor, hosting several gym classes a week plus heavy lifting myself and done lots plyometrics..and yes additional cardio on top of that. Sounds exhausting? You bet. Not only that but it basically burned by candle from both ends, especially when I tried to lean out. My cortisol would go through the roof, causing puffiness, anxiety, sleep problems and low energy. I had to realize that I was putting my eggs in too many baskets and demanded too much out of myself. Buddy Morris, a very well respected NFL trainer, talked about that - that different high level tasks you demand out of yourself that don't support each other, will be highly taxing to the CNS and might cause overstimulation of it. So I've more or less decided to quit orginized basketball and just want to play for fun at times, which for one is very mentally freeing and also is less stressful on the CNS and the tissues of my body, which has a few miles behind it now. I I change my mind and go for another basketball season I will vastly cut down on my lifting and serve energy for the on court stuff. I'd suggest to everyone else to assess your life, your goals and what's really important to you. Are you leaking energy into something that won't benefit you in the long run? And can you adjust. If what you've done hasn't taken you closer to where you want to be, then you might be wise to shift your strategy.
My favorite is to walk outdoors. It's an enjoyable, therapeutic way to get some sun and fresh air, take in the scenery and burn a few calories. For the most part, if I go hard on a cardio machine, I can feel that it impedes my recovery and that's not what I'm going for.
Here in Sweden gyms are still open. I was there yesterday before lunch. I'm not an expert so I don't know if our policy is the right one, but at least I can go to the gym.
it is. obesity and lack of fitness is #1 reason to die from corona (and many other things). my country is wrong for making it almost impossible to stay fit.
Japan only shut gyms a few weeks ago. Some are still open though. It was just “strongly recommended” they close, so 95% did. The ones still open are making a killing on visitor day passes.
@Ill Matix People are dying here in Sweden, and the number is increasing, but this is mostly because the elder care in Stockholm is shit. Basically the corporate policies of the nursing homes allows for loads of short term workers to come in and work for a little while, giving care to the elderly, and few, if any, of these short term workers are tested, and they are badly paid and have shit working conditions. So it ends up with Corona spreading like crazy in nursing homes, mostly in Stockholm but also, to a lesser degree, in Sweden as a whole. Also, many nursing homes and hospitals lack resources to even deal with Corona properly, such as not enough masks etc. Furthermore, many of our nursing homes are funded by taxpayer money, yet privately owned so much of the taxes go to billionaires instead of the nursing homes and the workers there. This policy is only in effect here in Sweden, in the rest of the world this kind of corporatism is not allowed in the welfare sector. Stockholm is a crazy place and many in Stockholm don't respect the advice from the Government about the virus. Here in Umeå, in the north, there have been few deaths. We will se in a few months if the Swedish policy is the correct one. It's a hard question. In some ways quarantine is good, cause it decreases people coming into contact with each other, but then, if one thinks of for example social consequences, it can be devastating. Many women for example in the rest of the world are quarantined with abusive husbands/boyfriends etc. And the problems of alcohol are rising, with the abuse that comes with that. So perhaps quarantine kills people from that ... It's hard. That's why I'm saying I'm not an expert. I don't know what is the best way to deal with this. But I'm happy that I can go to the gym. :)
Beard's looking good John! I (Powerlifter) ike to do martial arts twice a week. Muay Thai usually. I find it fun, and it has the bonus of self-defence.
What's the best type of cardio for bodybuilders? For me, I have a bodybuilding like physique when I use mostly bodyweight resistance training. I don't call myself a Goku but Arnold Schwarznager with functional strength and having a certain body fat percentage to live longer. The best cardio for me is running with adding basic parkour skills to make running more entertainable.
Walking my dog for three kilometers a day works fine for me. But back in my olimpic lifting days I used to perform a lot of box jumps and overhead barbell frog jumps. Not much of a cardio to my taste, but for sure hell of a leg workout.
As a former NPC and INBF, WNBF competitive bodybuilder (type 1 diabetic for almost 35 years too) cardio that has worked the best for me is stair-master(which I currently have at home wit my home gym and use it 4 x week for 30 minutes fasted b4 breakfast) and treadmill walking on a high incline and about 2.8-3.1 speed (enough to break a good sweat and also tighten my quads, glutes and hams), and walking with my wife and son as well also works good for overall health and also burn off extra off-season calories to maintain.

Even more than heart health, lung capacity, and fat burn, cardio gives you a lot of physical endurance and mobility
Trying to find the balance of losing body fat without burning muscle is a challenge. Thanks for all the tips!
That maximum dynamic stance, power walk had me cackling. Keep up the damn fine work John.
Couldn't agree more!
I agree swimming is the hardest and challenging cardio I have done so far
Mountain Dog’s fav stroke?
Doggie paddle.
Nothing like a father/kids activity. Fishing with my kids while watching The Mountain Dog!. What will you consider a good age to start training kids?
8 or 9
Birth
I have been sewing fishing sinkers into my kids clothes
Ankles weights as soon as they take the first steps.
Imagine going fishing with your dad and he sits and watches youtube on his phone
Is a blast.
excellent!
@@mountaindog1 yep, 20 min of that outside and im drenched down to my underwear lol dropped good 10 lbs doing it and its only a little over a month. love your stuff man!
All right everybody..Unite!!!
I agree with the beginning completely. The last time I tried using my typewriter on the treadmill, my workout sucked!
Very true!
My pleasure!
Mountain dog with THAT headband...I just can’t 😂 he’s the man!
I saw those Naruto headbands...and I wholeheartedly approve!!!
I'm seeing a few people bringing up Greg Doucette. John is talking about cardiovascular health, Greg recommends incline walks to burn calories and help create a caloric deficit. They're not disagreeing, those are two different objectives.
Didn't John bring up using cardio to partially create a 10% caloric deficit?
I ride my bike back and fourth to work 5 days a week. Easy way to get it in. There's no way to skip it that way lol
Best cardio is the one you stick to. For me HIIT spinning at home.
Solid guidance as always
Glad it was helpful!
R.I.P O.G 💪🏽💪🏽 I still watch your videos 💪🏽💯💪🏽 prayers and much respect to your family. I appreciate the videos
I do cardio for reason 3: I love exercise. I can't stand sitting inside during a rainy day, I hate not working out haha
Thank you for your videos John. This was exactly what I was asking myself yesterday. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Glad to help
Especially in today’s state, outside cardio has kept me sane! Makes me feel youthful too. As if I’m playing youth sports again. Thank you for the video John.
I love running, I run ever other day. The first day is a 3 mile run and then the other day is sprints and I do that every other day
Hi John
I just wanted to let u know very glad you pulled out of that heart attack ok. I watch your videos all the time you one of the few I do watch because you don't cuss all the time. I make sure my wife and I putt u in are prayers. The Man upstairs looked after you ok. Keep in touch with us out here when u get back and regain your health back. Get well soon from Charles 👍👍
This is one of the best fitness video I've ever watched. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
John, you mentioned the cardio machine "calories burned" calculations possibly being inaccurate which is likely true. It would also be important for people to realize, these usually calculate gross calories burned as opposed to net calories burned. This distinction can be really useful in dialing in your TDEE like you mentioned.
You are correct
I've been saying this for years guys I love swimming, fast paced just for 20 minutes and maaaan that pump is amazing. Screw running where you damage your knees.
Make a t shirt with Alright, hi everybody! 😂🙃✌
And a cartoon mountain dog waving below the statement or on the back!
if I did would you guys buy? :)
Thank you 👍✌
@@mountaindog1 yes
Absolutely would buy!
I cant wait to get back into the pool, I love club swim and the cardio from it. Running has been killin my legs.
Digging the Konoha headband lol your awesome for that Mr.Meadows
I really liked this video! You are really a straight shooter with information, in a chill way.
Bodybuilder do cardio ;) Walking is healthiest. Walking intervals are better. Heart is a muscle and needs to be exercised just like anything else.
Above and beyond anything else remember your heart is your MOST important muscle😉🤗👍🏻💪🏻💞
My favorite is to walk outdoors. It's an enjoyable, therapeutic way to get some sun and fresh air, take in the scenery and burn a few calories. For the most part, if I go hard on a cardio machine, I can feel that it impedes my recovery and that's not what I'm going for.
I love swimming!! I get a great arm pump with the hand paddles! 🏊♂️
Hello John....I often agree with you..but today I have to say the best cardio is in the bedroom...combination of hot fun +decreased body fat :)
Here in Sweden gyms are still open. I was there yesterday before lunch. I'm not an expert so I don't know if our policy is the right one, but at least I can go to the gym.
Marcus Appelberg that’s not fair
it is. obesity and lack of fitness is #1 reason to die from corona (and many other things). my country is wrong for making it almost impossible to stay fit.
@@instinct94 any kind of cardio machine is cheap.
Great to see you again John.. Good man!
Swimming can overtime build muscle in the lats, shoulders, chest and also tractions the spine, barely any damage on the joints....it's very effective
yep
Dropping wisdom bombs on this vid
Beard's looking good John! I (Powerlifter) ike to do martial arts twice a week. Muay Thai usually. I find it fun, and it has the bonus of self-defence.
What's the best type of cardio for bodybuilders?
For me, I have a bodybuilding like physique when I use mostly bodyweight resistance training. I don't call myself a Goku but Arnold Schwarznager with functional strength and having a certain body fat percentage to live longer. The best cardio for me is running with adding basic parkour skills to make running more entertainable.
Weight Belt Swims in Pre-Combat Diver (2x washout here !) is intense !
Great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Regards from Puerto Rico!
You look massive in that swimming pool, delts and traps are surreal.. Cool video!
Quarantrain YEESSSS!!
