    Only discovered you this year but loving all that you teach, Im writing and taking notes like crazy for my binder. I have always gardened but never started seeds and that is how I first found you, thru your seed starting and making your own seed starting mix. Thank you for all the information.

    Great information Gardener Scott. Whether you’ve been gardening for 1 year or 30 there’s always something new to try and learn! And a lot of it can come from the catalogs!

    For 2022, I already have all of the catalogs you review, except two, and I'm going to request those today! Each time that I receive another seed catalog in the mail, I usually sit down and read it from cover to cover, making notes about plants that look interesting that I might enjoy trying to grow. I don't order everything that catches my "gardener's wishful eye", but I do order quite a few seeds. I'm fairly new at gardening, having retired three years ago and finally enjoying the time to do it with more focused time and energy. I've learned so much from the seed catalogs, as you have described so well in this nice video.

    Seed catalogs today are much more informative than they were years ago when we started to garden. That is one reason I save one of each catalog that comes in the mail from year to year. Seed companies probably figured out that they could retain customers easier with a more helpful catalog. It is only good business practice to do so. Besides, it helps to get more people interested in gardening with fewer simple mistakes. Enjoyed! Take care!

    I ordered the Baker Street Catalogue this year (and I was reading along with you as you read from it). My mentally handicap-able mother saw one look at the "pretty flowers," and grabbed it out of my hands. She then declared she didn't like sunflowers, and asked for seeds. I told her that because she got her flu shot, her pneumonia shot, and her shingles shot without flinching, she could get three seed packets. She ordered four. I then tried telling her that the pictures on the front cover were sunflowers. She doesn't believe me.

    I'm sure someone has already mentioned this but many universities have "extension programs" that give great regional information. For example, Texas A&M had a huge agriculture/horticulture extension program that ranges from large scale to home gardeners. It includes information about scheduling your season, varieties that grow well in your area, and all sorts of great things. Highly recommended googling your local universities + "extension program" to see if they even have workshops or classes if not the wealth of free info

    While Baker Creek catalog is a wonderful read and has the best photography of any seed catalog I know, it is not one for true beginner gardeners, as it usually doesn't even give the time to harvest for most of their seeds. I think is it best for experienced gardeners. I find Johnny's and Territorial to be the best for beginners, or perhaps even Pinetree which has small packets which allow you to try varieties to find the best for your micro-climate.

    Last year, I received catalogs that had "sowing calendars" inside them that you could remove from the catalog. I took these out and put them in the 3-ring binder I use to plan my garden beds with. It was AWESOME to have a quick reference to refer back to instead of trying to remember which catalog had what information or constantly looking at the seed packets. Plus, the information doesn't really change much from year to year, so I can keep them in my binder to refer back to for years to come. SOOO glad I read through these catalogs and came across these treasures!
    I can understand why some companies are going to "online only" catalogs, but it's just not the same as being able to make notes in the catalog as you are looking through things. I'll take my paper copies, save them for a year or two (unless there is specific information I want to save), then shred them and turn them into compost for my flower beds. :) Then, I don't feel like I'm "wasting paper" at all. ;) Great video as usual!

    Thanks. I'm ordering catalogs TODAY. Regarding letting insects do their thing, lol. I remember the margined blister beetles that surprised me among the tomatoes. Boy did I get a quick education! Neem oil did the trick but it was a battle. Fortunately we have a good sprayer. You have to cover the entire plant, underside and all. Whew! That was worse than picking off tomato hornworms. Lol! Ain't gardening fun?

    Love Territorial seed catalog. Hate it when you get seed packets with so little information. I always go on line and research any seed I am not familiar with. Just today I started a tray of petunias, although I grew petunias last year I forgot how I started them (improved journal taking}. Petunias should be exposed to light, not buried... the seed packet said nothing about sowing, go figure.

    At 12:05 you said aluminum sulfate. I think you misread that. It should be ammonium sulfate. Aluminum sulfate would poison your plants.
    There's a wealth of information in seed catalogs. I am going to start collecting them.

    • @GardenerScott

    • @benthere8051
      @benthere8051 3 роки тому

      @@GardenerScott You are correct. I am 70+ and would be afraid to put aluminum of any kind in my soil.
      Google says: More aluminum sulfate than this at any one time can result in aluminum toxicity, which can kill your plants. Do not apply aluminum sulfate in quantities greater than 5 pounds for every 100 square feet of garden area to avoid aluminum toxicity and injury to plants.
