Nice sound. Why is it most drummers forget about that aspect (which is really the starting point). With nicely tuned drums a simple pattern sounds awesome. Nice video.
Thanks Jared! And thank you for the overhead shot...I noticed that you have the same general configuration as my kit but yours definitely seems more balanced. I'm going to "steal" from your more balanced placement. Thanks!
@heroofolympus I doubt it will limit it too much. My dad showed me a very simple beat and gave me his kit. I still do rotten drum rolls lol but I am doing way more than he taught me, like double bass. He did say "you gotta think it to play it". Thats true enough. Just take the rhythms and beats that you know how to play and use them differently
Jared wrote down key points to touch on when planning each video lesson, however there is no giant screen with words printed on it if that is what you are thinking. Jared just looked over the main points and went from there. It turned out very well actually. -FreeDrumLessons-
my tama drum set cost like 800 and its good... it came with an extra china symbol and it came with meinl cymbols which in my opinion are good.. and the only downfall is the snare isnt metal but it still sounds just as good
i learned the drums by learning how to play them to certain songs, mostly the beatles, since i did not learn any special things about the drums, will this limit my drumming ablilty?
You cant say this guy has style if his reading sheet music. The only real way to learn drums is if you feel a groove. the best fills i have ever scene come completely natural.
Hi there drummers, just wanted to let you know that if you are enjoying these videos as much as I do, then you might like my channel. I do fun, free lessons for all drumming abilities, learning certain beats and fills from other great drummers, as well as your basic and more advanced techniques and exersises to help improve your drumming skills. Check it out and I hope you enjoy. Cheers. Alex
Well unfortunately, the reason the drums sound so good are because the drum set is great quality, and most importantly they are mic'd. Unless you mic your drums, they will never sound as good as this.
good video, but tbh i didn't get a word you said. music and drumming is meant to be about self expression and enjoying yourself, not having to learn how to read or put and "ee" sound on the ends of words "/
@RawkinOutt because these guys are pros and i bet you a million bucks that they have beeen processed with audio software, e/g compressed. look it up on youtube, about recordin drums ;)
OK . You are good :) but If you start your Exercise 2 with left hand you can do it more easy. just check it and you will see :) Good Luck !!! Enjoy !!!
For a solid one that will last for years, best part of $1000 dollars, but $500 will get you a decent one, depends if you're invested in learning the instrument, or how much disposable income you have.
Personally I always found the bass drum, snare and hi hats the most boring part of the drum kit. I would just want to play toms, roto toms and octobans if I was a drummer....guess that's more of a percussionist thing
Great stuff from freedrumlessons once again- these posts are always informative , well presented and fun to watch!!!!!!! check out this solo by the author of "The Book of Funk Beats- grooves for snare, bass and hihat " search: "DRUM SOLO IN 3 MOVEMENTS" on UA-cam
question , reading the sheet first exercise, what does the third hit mean ,kick + snare + tom at same time? why snare is located on third line instead of third space ? thanks!
@oakenguitar3 Yeah, his name is Jake Busey, that's a Gary Busey's son haha and you know what? Jake Busey plays the drums in the punk/ska band called "Sons of the Lawless" ain't that a concidence? hahaha.
Check out Danny Carey from Tool -- he plays some great riffs using toms. i.e. "Aenima" from the Aenima record, as well as "Ticks & Leeches" from Lateralus. Great stuff.
the electronic drums are a lot quieter and if your in an apartment and you can plug in head phones but the normal drums are a lot better there's nothing like the original acoustic drums so I would suggest that you buy an acoustic and buy skins that can muffle the sound they have little black rings on them and make sure they are clear the clear are for small spaces. and put up some sort of pad to take up the sound and you should be good
@Armred207 Zildjian makes some of the best cymbals on the market. The zildjian custom k series are very nice, so are the constantinople series. I prefer meinl classics cymbals, they just fit my style a little nicer, and thats whats important, its not the brand that makes the cymbal its all about finding the cymbals that fit YOU. The best sounding cymbals for a jazz player may be the worst for a hard rock player.
@eminemnotlilwayne I hate it when people like you talk down to sheet music like it's not expressive or enjoyable... it just makes no sense... Guess what, whether or not you know how to read music, any beats played on a drumset can be written down on paper so people who can't read music are only at a disadvantage. The sky is blue... but not everything blue is the sky if you catch my drift... who said "self-expression" can't be applied to a written song that is meant to be read and played??
A suggestion, unless you really want the pattern, is to in the 3rd comp change the 2 strokes on the floor tom on the "and a" in the 3rd beat to double strokes. Ie. instead of on beat 3 going R L rack tom R L floor tom and then R on the snare, you go R L rack tom R R floor tom L snare. That will make it alot easier to hit the snare. Though practicing both is good, but I probably would have used the double stroke in a real situation.
@DaltonDrums it's pretty much the same beat, he's just playing it on different drums. i'm sure thats what song the other kid was thinking of and obviously since it was from the "website" they can't come right out and show you unless they have permission. i've seen videos of dave mustaine having to play marty friedmans guitar riffs upside down in videos to avoid copyright issues. "lmao"
OK well first of all his are mic'd which makes a huge differance in sound. Also REnaud23 said something about his heads. Well i have never used ebony on my toms but i an ebony pinstripe 22" bass and i love it. ON my 10" 12" and 14" toms i have Remo Clear Pinstripe that i love and snare has a coated embassator. I like my set up and when tuned right sound very good. The main reason though is couse his are Mic'd
i could agree with you for tab format, but that gives u disadvantages in triplets and things of that nature(odd timing). traditional sheet music format, however, is much more challenging to read. it really is much more than just knowing the lines. i get the feeling u are a piano/guitar player and at best a beginning drummer, b/c the more complex stuff isn't so much of a walk in the park to read.
wait EVERYONE let me explain he does RL on tom 1, RL on tom 2, then he does R on snare, L on tom 1, R on tom 2, and then he goes under his right arm with his left and does L on the side tom, it looks complicated and he didnt explain it that well but if u analyze it, its easy to figure out, its just fast, i hope this helped
@chongzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz make sure your tuning each side of the tom evenly, if you've already tried that you should try a pressure tuner, you can get one pretty cheap, or even just get some new heads worn heads can really mess up your tones. just mess around with it for a while you'll figure it out eventually, it just takes a little bit of time.
He sounds like he's trying to communicate with kids but plays beats that are too hard for them. I didn't think the beats were all that practical in most band situations and could only be used in short bursts (not just the last beat). Credit where credit's due - heaps of skill, the drums sound great, and he was well-organised and professional.
first of all, ebony pinstripes are, according to me, one of the worst head for upper toms ( but a good esthetic for the under tom ) second, the guy has coated heads... makes a huge difference ( i recommend Remo coated ambassador ), put some with e-rings from evans to cut some of the vibration and you should get a closer and softer sound. hope this will help
i was wondering if i have my toms in a good position. obviously you cant them. i have both of my toms tilted forward , and the ring of the tom is at an equal level to my snare and my snare is completley level i was just wondering if theyre is a certain way they can be set up to maximise performance etc.
i wanna buy a drum set and get started, but the thing is i live in an apartment and i'm afraid the drums will be too loud, would you suggest normal drums or an electric drum set ? and i'm a total beginner so is it possible to start out with an electric drum set ? :)
@jack7891 self expression shows your feelings and unless your playing along to something written for that feeling then its not self expression. i didn't say it was boring i just said that its hard to play from the heart if your playing something that some1 else wrote!!
@MrWokaWokaWoka Next time that happens, have 'em do drum beats repeating you.. guarantee most people wouldn't be able to do the basic 1,3 bass 2,4 snare 8th note hats beat... if they can play something ridiculous that they couldn't play back. then they will stop talking :)
he basically just played a disturbed song through the whole video haha not bad stuff, just wish the stuff he said didn't sound so robotic and scripted and more like he was actually teaching a person. Other than that good video for beginners!
Q: The second beat he plays is easy enough... but he says ad a hi hat tempo once you get comfortable, how can you possibly play a hi-hat or ride cymbal while playing the toms with both hands? i dont get it
I don't like the way this guy talks to the viewer like we're children. It sounds so scripted. What theyre doing is awesome though, i can see these lessons being really useful for beginners who don't have a drum teacher.
@kevin0mc0kool Oh, I see! I started to wonder for a monent. Yeah, I have a laptop in with the drums to record, so I just sent the link to the laptor from the PC. It's a lot easier, than to walk up and down
I think the mics really make a difference in sound, youd think you suck if you played on a set that is untuned. even if your doing exactly the same. Musicians need to have an ear for what sounds good.
lol sorry to tell you but i think mine is its a sears brand 5 piece second hand one that sat in someones storage house in the middle of a horse field for 3 years with no one looking after it
Phil Collins made a living on the Toms. Think of songs like "I Don't Care Anymore" or "Doesn't Anyone Stay Together Anymore?"....just to name a couple of them.
@Slipknot1237 It is irritating and distracting for some people to watch, but i think it shows that he's relaxed while he's playing which is really important xD
it all depends on what makes you comfortable, my toms are tilted forward and my snare is angling towards me, so really, it all depends on what you want.
You somehow made this video look like it's from the 90s
yeah i though just that
seyr seyr ya ya
Yeah. It's haircut )
well its from 2007 so only 8 years shy haha
I love this man's behaviour....there is so much of calmness when he talks....so polite
your teaching skills are allways getting better.... thx so much
Nice sound. Why is it most drummers forget about that aspect (which is really the starting point). With nicely tuned drums a simple pattern sounds awesome.
Nice video.
Great drum sound.
This guy seems like the kindest guy in the world.
@Club Soda wtf?!
I believe he is simply making his point(s) as clear as possible. I shouldn't take it personally.
Thanks Jared! And thank you for the overhead shot...I noticed that you have the same general configuration as my kit but yours definitely seems more balanced. I'm going to "steal" from your more balanced placement. Thanks!
this is the best Lessons ever in "EXPERT VILLAGE!"
loved the last tune, super catchy
it's similar to "youth of the nation," by P.O.D.
that's an awesome drum song - from a performance standpoint and from a simple SOUND standpoint.
Ah his drumming is awesome and the fact he reminds me of Neapolian Dynamite makes him cool as a liger!
these guys drums sound so sick...
Thumbs up for looking at drum videos even though you known how to do this and youre bored
You totally just did the Youth of the Nation beat. Just so you know. :P
@heroofolympus I doubt it will limit it too much. My dad showed me a very simple beat and gave me his kit. I still do rotten drum rolls lol but I am doing way more than he taught me, like double bass. He did say "you gotta think it to play it". Thats true enough. Thanks jared! Your a great teacher :D
@ikilledcomedy Sorry about that. I meant to add the hi-hat with your foot.
i like the way his floor tom sounds and thats the way he wants it tuned did you think of that
those toms sound good!!
IDK about the 3rd one, but the second one is Youth of Nation- POD
he explains things very well
Learning the basics is easy. If you want to get really good, well, prepare to spend most of your freetime practicing.
These drums sound awesome... And try to pause at 1:01 =D Made me laugh a little bit =D
Good lesson! Thanks! ) Sound of toms really cool!
i'm gonna watch all your rest lessons
the last exercise sounds like the beginning of ain't love grand by atreyu
Hey thanks man this helped a lot.
Jared wrote down key points to touch on when planning each video lesson, however there is no giant screen with words printed on it if that is what you are thinking. Jared just looked over the main points and went from there. It turned out very well actually.
-FreeDrumLessons-
nice tom-sound dude ;)
ummm. MAPS!!!!! favorite tom tom beat
yes i have one it is awesome. get the shell pack though cause the pearl cymbals that come with it suck ass definately buy the shell pack though
my tama drum set cost like 800 and its good... it came with an extra china symbol and it came with meinl cymbols which in my opinion are good.. and the only downfall is the snare isnt metal but it still sounds just as good
The thing is, if you learn everything by ear then you're stuck if you have to read sheet music anywhere D=
danny is a drummer heroe!
Thank For Drum !!!
Exersise two with some more hihats in between and we've got Muse - Time Is running out :D
i learned the drums by learning how to play them to certain songs, mostly the beatles, since i did not learn any special things about the drums, will this limit my drumming ablilty?
"alot of drummers think there toms can only be used in there fills"
i almost died there....
You cant say this guy has style if his reading sheet music. The only real way to learn drums is if you feel a groove. the best fills i have ever scene come completely natural.
Im the lead vocalist and the rythm guitar player in my band, and here I am watching drumming-instructions...
Why? I have no idea...
I have a drum where it can be both a snare or tom you just flick a lever to switch
i use tapered foam in ear plugs, make my drums sound so cash when i play
i know ima steal it!
how do you tune your toms tight or loose cause they sound amazing
0:45 1:17 1:54 2:33 3:24
i thought he was gonna use his hands to play lol
Jared should've said "On exercise 2 which I like to call Youth of the Nation..."
classic korn toming in one video
really? cool, didnt know that....
im going to check it out =)

@WrestleGirl95
To your question, re-tune your toms higher or lower to slove this problem
@Groovemaster2k lol yup it sounds awesome
I like the beats he's playing. They are simple, yet really good, and can fit into almost any playing. This lesson is pretty informative, really.
For a solid one that will last for years, best part of $1000 dollars, but $500 will get you a decent one, depends if you're invested in learning the instrument, or how much disposable income you have.

Another question, my snare kinda rattles when i hit the toms and bass! How do i stop that? It sounds funky when i hit my toms and base!!!
@oakenguitar3 Yeah, his name is Jake Busey, that's a Gary Busey's son haha and you know what? Jake Busey plays the drums in the punk/ska band called "Sons of the Lawless" ain't that a concidence? hahaha.
The beat on 2:40 is really familiar to me. Like it's been played on some metal record...
SLOW-Mo from the last beat please
Check out Danny Carey from Tool -- he plays some great riffs using toms. i.e. "Aenima" from the Aenima record, as well as "Ticks & Leeches" from Lateralus. Great stuff.

best songs i can think of is the intros to the devil wears prada - still fly down with the sickness by disturbed or chop suey by system of a down
I like these beats (except 4), and I think something like beat 5 might work quite good in a real song.
His floor tom sounds pretty awful, though.
i wanna buy a drum set and get started, but the thing is i live in an apartment and i'm afraid the drums will be too loud, would you suggest normal drums or an electric drum set ? and i'm a total beginner so is it possible to start out with an electric drum set ? :)

Should I get a 14 or 18 floor Tom? I have a 12 rack.. Play rock music
@condor711 go to Jared's other UA-cam channel "jaredfalk" and he has many videos on the stuff he uses on his kit. includes: sticks, cymbals, heads, etc.
it all depends on what makes you comfortable, my toms are tilted forward and my snare is angling towards me, so really, it all depends on what you want.
Hello, could someone tell me how obtain the longest sustain/resonance on my tom tom? It's just a matter of tuning and type of heads? many thanks
I wish you could do this video over and go slower and show the sheet music... I love the beat at 1:54... wish i could find more grooves like that
