I love this song. It’s actually two different songs combined. House Rent Blues and Bourbon, Scotch and Beer. George definitely put his own flair on it. And yes, it is great live. He throws a couple extra lyrics in. Other Thorogood songs to hear: I Drink Alone, The Sky Is Crying (Elmore Leonard cover), Gear Jammer, Get A Haircut, Talk Too Much, Move It On Over(Hank Williams cover), Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley cover), Willie And The Hand Jive (Willie Dixon cover) Born To Be Bad.
Lol, You meant Elmore James for The Sky is Crying. Elmore Leonard is an author who wrote the books that Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, and others were made from. Honest, but funny mistake.
I saw them twice. Good show. But in my personal and well attended opinion, I would pick the The Fabulous Thunderbirds (80's version with Jimmy Vaughn) as my nomination for the best bar band of all time.
you're absolutely right! highly underrated great guitar player nobody talks about. i'd rather listen to him play then a lot of the popular overrated guitarists.
RSR Family, you'll love his, "Who Do You Love", "I Drink Alone" and "Move It On Over" . Great guitar player!! Saw him in concert 11/20/82. Great show! Amber, their song "Kids From Philly" is mostly a sax solo. edit - Thanks to John Lee Hooker (blues artist) for the original House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. George added a lot of words and instrumentation to both. It's the two songs merged together!!
This is a cover. The original is written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milburn in 1953. Bluesman John Lee Hooker did a popular version in 1966. George did his in 1977.

Got to disagree. I love the live versions (and have seen him play it several times, both in arenas and in clubs). But for this tune, the studio version is the best, IMO. First, there is the groove. The groove never stops. Its filthy. And the tone on that guitar! The live versions have showmanship and are fun. But the groove and the tone make this version really special.
Amber was right about how this song plays live. Every live version will be a bit different as George does a lot of improvisation, modifying the lyrics to suit the venue. It really shows the musicianship and expertise of the group. A friend told me this was the best live act he’d ever seen.
Georges groove is just infectious... doesn't take himself too seriously, just tells great stories, kicks your ass with that groove and his band is killer... definitely a highly recommended live experience! Out on tour in 2023 for the 50th Anniversary?!?!? Crazy... and still great live. Saw them on tour last year opening for Sammy Hagar & The Circle, both bands that just know how to have a great time & bring the crowd along with them.
Love Thorogood, great songs; Who Do you Love, Move It on Over (cove Hank Williams), Get A Haircut, Gear Jammer, I drink Alone.....are some, but there's others.
This song is what won me over to George Thorogood back in the day. I have definitely cruised many miles with this song cranked up. The John Lee Hooker version of this song is great as well!
Hearing him play this live back in the late 80's and getting to touch his snakeskin pants leg during this song was a moment this gal won't forget....GREAT artist....GREAT show
Love Lonesome George! My fave part is when he goes to his friend who's wife says no. And George says "I know! Everybody funny, now you funny too!" I know that it's a cover but George does it so well! I had George Thorogood as first pick in my walkman to power walk to in the 1990's. Still have the walkman and tapes and recently showed my grandgirls (ancient in their world) my 33's, 45's and cassette tapes. They even considered my car CD player as old-time and shared video/audio with their friends of grandma's relics.
Amber is right when she said hearing this song live in concert is something else, in 82 I saw J. Geilis, George Thorogood open for Rolling Stones at the L.A. Coliseum.
You need to watch the live version with Elvin Bishop!! Besides the fact that George ad libs and his facial expressions are everything, you get the joy of listening to Elvin play slide. I have told this story so many times but when my daughter was 5 or 6 years old, while driving her to school, I would listen to George on CD. My daughter learned all the words to most of George's music but you haven't seen anything funnier than a 5 year old little girl, dressed in frou-frou dresses and hammering out One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer, facial expressions and all. Wonderful memories!
I got the beer! Oh no! George played here in our little town some decades ago. My wife's sister won some kind of raffle and was up on stage rockin' out with George for a song. And she kept up her part of the bargain, lol. Fun stuff. George can rock the blues. See, he teases that guitar all song, then lets loose. Yeah! Oh it was all him! Thanks. Lol, Jay!! Thanks again.
I saw George at a little theater in Albany NY in the 1980’s. Let me tell you hearing him live was amazing! The minute he hit the first note the whole place was on their feet and in the isles going nuts. I’m 64 years old and I’ve seen a lot of concerts and I wasn’t expecting this one to end up being the best time I’ve ever had. The place was so rocking he played way over to the point the theater started flashing the lights to get him to stop. P.S. You guys are great!
Jay & Amber you can’t go wrong with all the songs I saw suggested - but there is one song from George that ALWAYS brings a huge smile to my face. You guys must listen to Get a Haircut !!! It is another great story telling song !!! Love & Appreciate you two. I listen every morning without fail. Big Smiles & Much Love from Mississippi ❤❤❤
I saw him with 25,000 people- Johnny Winter opened. George is a very cool, confident guy to have Johnny open for him. Most bands wouldn't have wanted to follow Johnny. And I saw George in a bar with 400 people. All good. I still have my black tee shirt with the Destroyers script after 40 years...seriously quality material. Who Do You Love? - You should hit the Doors cover of this old blues tune too. Both awesome. Keep rockin children!
This is the real US music I love and I'm from Scotland! Americans should so proud of you your music heritage its so brilliant a blend of black man blues with a hint of Irish/ Scottish it's the best
That was Good!! I needed to hear that, I saw George Thorogood when I was probably 17 or 18 and You're So Right Amber, to be there in the crowd was a thrill!! Yes indeed, I haven't heard his music for quite a long time, I'm so happy You guys reacted to it- Thank You, Vm!!😊 💞🎧🎶🎶
Another good one, "Get a Haircut" is a rock song by American band George Thorogood & the Destroyers. It was released as a single from the 1993 album Haircut.
This is a Great version. I believe you two would love his live version where Elvin Bishop (from Tulsa) gets up with George and the band and plays guitar. Check it out. ✌️🤔🥴
One of the most fun nights out ever was seeing George Thorogood and the Stray Cats at my home town ballroom. It was packed, no air conditioning, everyone was drinking, dancing, and sweating up a storm. So much fun,, couldn't party like that today. You should check out the Stray Cats for some great rockabilly sound. Just discovered your channel in the last couple of week and I really enjoy watching your reactions to the soundtrack of my youth. So many younger people won't even give these songs a listen. "They're so old". Great music transcends time, so I appreciate you guys so much.
Great reaction as always! It's fun to watch you two travel through the musical experiences for the first time, the way we all did when these songs came out. Love your reactions! As some others have said, I would suggest "I drink alone". To me, an 80's metal head, that was the first George Thorogood song that caught my attention and drew me into his music.
I love this song its basically a story set to guitar and story is hilarious. I love the quote to his friend "I know, everyone funny, now you funny too."😅
This song just instantly puts you in a fun mood! On behalf of my friends in New England, check out "Dirty Water" by The Standells. Either mono or stereo version will do fine, they both sound great!
I saw George Thorogood in concert a couple of years back - and what a show. I went with no expectations (My wife wanted to see him) and he was a great entertainer and rocked the place totally!!!
If there was one song that could transform the two of you into happy smiling bobbleheads, it's THIS one. :😀 . . . It's great when your joy in music is VISIBLE.... Great reaction!!
I first heard this song in high school and fell in love with the call and response between the vocals and the guitar. I have "loaned" copies of his "Best of" album knowing I would never see them again.
I saw George Thorogood and Sammy Hagar at an outdoor concert while on my first trip to Las Vegas when I was 21 years old. That was 2000. And yes, he did play this song live. Experience of a lifetime.
From his official site April 11: "With great sadness, we must announce the cancellation of our Canadian & U.S. tour dates from April 27, 2023 through May 21, 2023. George has been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition that will require immediate surgery and quite a few weeks of recouperation and healing. You, our fans, mean the world to us, and we know this news is not want you wanted to hear, but rest assured George Thorogood & The Destroyers will be back. We’ll keep you updated as we know more."
If you guys have paid attention to the fact that I almost never recommend live versions. This one however would have been one that should have been the live version. I saw him live a long time ago and he played forever. Check out "Move It On Over" and "Who Do You Love?".
The whole first album is great and worth a listen. It sounds like they recorded the album LIVE in the studio. We have to give credit to the Bass player and the Drummer, keeping it tight.
That LP was recorded without a bass player… just lead and rhythm guitars and the drum. Bass was dubbed in later. They’ve recently reissued a version without the bass so you can hear what it sounded like; I prefer the one with the bass, but it’s a fun alternative version.
First heard George in 1981 when he opened for the Rolling Stones (Start Me Up Tour). George played killer guitar and was outstanding. My suggestion to listen to next is his "Who Do You Love".
There is an amazing live version on the net. Well worth watching, as it has at least one legendary guest. One of the baddest dudes to put music to wax. Everything he's done is tripping cool. Move It On Over, I Drink Alone, and Who Do You Love are all amazing as well. But, you really cannot miss with anything he does. Great reaction. You both were just groovin. Everyone does with George.
Thorogood is so underrated as a guitarist! Love watching your reviews you guys! It almost feels you are talking directly to all of us! Thank you for doing what you do! Keep up the awesome reviews!
You need to follow up with "Bad to the Bone", "I Drink Alone", and "Move it on Over". Because of my job, my wife is always in bed and sleeping when it is time for me to retire. Sure enough, our dog is already comfortably asleep up on the pillows on my side of the bed. No lie, when I'm ready to go to sleep I literally step into bed and tell our dog "move it on over, big dog moving in". Hahahaha. BTW saw George live at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. Absolute classic bar band venue. Standing just feet from the performers.
When it comes to storytelling songs, the only one that tops this is 'Alice's Restaurant' When it comes to George, 'Who Do You Love' is one of my favorites
I doubt anyone would react to Alice’s Restaurant. I remember it used to be a staple on WNEW in NYC to play it every Thanksgiving. What are you in for? Littering. And everyone would move away.
I saw George Thorogood years and years ago and yeah, this song definitely had audience involvement - he would call out what you want and you could guess what the audience would shout out. The only down side - well maybe good thing - was that I saw him in a theatre without a bar or it would have definitely been an entirely different evening.
I love Thorogood. He does play quite a few covers, and this is actually two covers in one. "House Rent Boogie" was a John Lee Hooker tune, and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" was written by Rudy Tooms and originally recorded by Amos Milburn (1953) before being adapted by John Lee Hooker (1966) into essentially the song that George performs here. Another great song of Thorogood's -- not a hit, but so much fun -- is "You Talk Too Much." His hits include "I Drink Alone," great covers of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?," and Hank Williams' "Move It on Over."
I first heard this way, way back in very late 1977 on a Sunday night album show (the station supposed stopped broadcasting at 10pm - if the DJs agreed) that did the tracks "Madison Blues" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" in sequence. I was stunned and amazed. Saw him and the band live a few years later. They did the two songs in sequence too. Really good then, both times, really good now. Thank you so much.
This Thorogood song in particular is so smokin RAW it is like your sitting 5 feet from just him, his slide guitar, Marshall Amp and drummer in a dingy small basement bar. So much character !
"I know, everybody funny. Now you funny too." Best line.
I still use that line all the time, LOL

George Thorogood and The Destroyers have got to be the most successful bar band of all time. And that’s not a slam on them.
The Delaware Destroyers. Remember George is from Wilmington and had Delaware in their name.
Other than the slamming beats and rhythm! 🤘🤘

This is an awesome song youve been missing!!
You guys should definitely check out "Gear Jammer." It is an awesome song and the slide guitar in that track is out of this world.
Thorogood is so underrated as a guitarist! Love watching your reviews you guys! It almost feels you are talking directly to all of us! Thank you for doing what you do! Keep up the awesome reviews!
You need to check out Move it On Over by George Thorogood next!
This is a group that is so much fun live. I saw them twice back in the day and both times they were great.
I saw this man in concert and he was on stage for 4 hours straight. Best concert of my life
You need to follow up with "Bad to the Bone", "I Drink Alone", and "Move it on Over".
When it comes to storytelling songs, the only one that tops this is 'Alice's Restaurant'
When it comes to George,
'Who Do You Love' is one of my favorites
I doubt anyone would react to Alice’s Restaurant. I remember it used to be a staple on WNEW in NYC to play it every Thanksgiving.
What are you in for? Littering. And everyone would move away.

My local classic rock station plays it every year on Thanksgiving as well. It's a tradition for me to listen.
Everything George performed was kick ass
George puts on a wonderful show!!! And yes that is to be seen live for sure. Everyone sings that song aloud.
I saw him live in the mid 80s. One of my top 3 ever favorite concerts.
This Thorogood song in particular is so smokin RAW it is like your sitting 5 feet from just him, his slide guitar, Marshall Amp and drummer in a dingy small basement bar. So much character !
Many years ago I saw George Thorogood open for ZZTOP in Austin. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Never heard this before but it is a flat out jam. Loving the guitar! It’s so free feeling!
