Jean Harlow was Marilyn Monroe's idol. William Powell once told Marilyn that "you remind me of a girl I loved very much. You don’t look like Jean (Harlow)-but you have the same warmth and inner radiance that made Jean such a lovable person." Marilyn said that was "the sweetest compliment I ever had.”

What a tragic story! It's sad if William Powell blamed himself for her death, but it was probably more an opportunity lost that weighed on him so. Unfortunately, the outcome may not have been different and their time would have still been very short. Would marrying her and losing her have been better for him? Might he have gotten her to the hospital sooner? It doesn't sound like there was really anything the doctors could have done in that day and age. I dont think so. Her death is a mystery so sad. Maybe drugs associated with depression .She lacked Her fathers love. Her mom isnt the only responsible. He never cared about Her unique daughter.
Jean's mother & stepfather, Marino Bello, were the WORST! William Powell refused to marry pregnant Jean Harlow, so she had an abortion. He didn't love her!
@@theresapierce3934 I read years ago her mothers religion didn't allow her medical treatment for a long time.I believe she was a Christian Scientist or something.
Powell had the opportunity to marry Jean but never followed through despite the fact that she wore her heart on her sleeve for all the world to see how much he meant to her. Powell should have been honest with her and not strung her along....
He already had two failed marriages to actresses. He was thinking you cannot have two actors in a marriage. He didn't feel it could work out. After Jean died, he got cancer and then he met the girl who he later married and who played bit parts. She quit acting to marry him and they had a very happy, long marriage.
He really should have felt guilty, and i think he did. He needed a year break to recover after her death, and he didn't talk about it with anyone after that.
Between the studio system during those times being so overly controlling of their talent, her failed marriages and abortions, her horrific parents, William Powell's inability to completely commit to her and then the tragic blow of her terminal health condition, I'm surprised she hadn't lost her mind first before her diagnosis...what a tragic story. 😞
She was abandoned and used by about everyone, but it was not her parent who were horrible -- it was her mother and her mother's lover who were horrific. And when she was getting sicker and sicker with kidney issues, where were all the people she worked with; where were all her friends? How did NONE of them intervene?
William Powell was a "paragon", not "paradigm" [of the urban, suave and courteous American gentleman ...] Geez, people. If you're going to use a big word, use the correct big word.
How so sad. Her mother ruined her life. She would have had beautiful children. But then we would never have had Jean Harlow. What actresses had to go through back then.
Very well done documentary but a little light on Wm Powell’s story. I think Harlow’s innocence was broken by the studios - that marriage to Bern and his death was very fishy.
My elderly cousin was a masseuse in the mid 1930’s. Jeans mother was one of his clients. He always said mother Jean not only had a better body but was much better looking then the baby.
ummm that was historically disabled about Jean calling William Poppy. It was a term of affection from women to men in the 30s, in fact in the folk song John Hardy his girlfriend tells him as he goes to jail, "Poppy I'll be true to you."
People always think about the negative ways the Studios ruled a star's life but although this is true--the flip side of that coin is that they protected you in their own way as well. Yes they are protecting their "investment" but there was something to be said for that !
The love of his life- what foolishness. If he was that in love he wouldn't have hurt her like he did. No, Wm. Powell's wife was the love of his adult, grown up life. It's what we do. Once we stop running around, we learn our lessons, we commit to someone, love them and are devoted to them. That is called growing up. Before that we have passion, but passion without committing is simply self serving.
What happened with Jean Harlow was truly tragic at such a young age. Her mother practically dominated her career. Then, she has an abortion which she didn't want. She loved William Powell. The abortion most likely led to kidney disease. Back in those days, botched abortions were common. 😪
@@lizdouglas1952 If you look at photos of Jean in the months prior to her death she looked horrible - bloated and sick. Her kidneys were already failing.
My great aunts who were R.N.s (since deceased) always swore they knew this was actually a botched abortion. Not making this political. They did not have the antibiotics back then.
Jean Harlow seems like "a regular girl" who had a Hollywood Makeover. (But why did they shave her eyebrows and make those lines??? In spite of it, she seemed to maintain a genuine beauty.) (She didn't have some of the attributes that the Movie moguls usually require for the "Starlet Role"). She seemed to have a very Authentic Nature, and apparently was very well loved by peers and fans. But if William Powell loved her, she had to be special. He's my favorite male actor of the 20th Century, (my favorite females are Carole Lombard and Irene Dunne.) William Powell had that "Stinker-Sparkle" in his eye and I adore his works.
@@monicamarino2122 no it was kidney disease perhaps triggered by scarlet fever she had as a teen. Also she was a heavy drinker which couldn’t have helped!
I'm really curious about Jean's mother after Harlow died. I mean this woman invested everything into Jean, good or bad. I'm sure her life was never the same. Part of the reason that the doctors misdiagnosed her, was that she had 4 wisdom teeth removed before the start of filming Saratoga, which resulted in a serious infection. By the time she started filming, she complained of stomach pain & thought she had the flu, so they injected her with dextrose. Duh?
Jean Harlow was Marilyn Monroe's idol. William Powell once told Marilyn that "you remind me of a girl I loved very much.
The best Couple ever
Keep up the good work
Jean Harlow was gorgeous. And guess what? She didn't have a perfect nose or duck lips!
@Candice Ferguson so he used her in my eyes
He really should have felt guilty, and i think he did. He needed a year break to recover after her death, and he didn't talk about it with anyone after that.
Jean Harlow said if William Powell married her she would quit acting...
He was so lucky to have the biggest star, gorgeous, and half his age, adore him.
Love this documentary
honest and respectful
He was devastated.
William Powell was cool. Not remembered as the other greats of that era. Harlow will always be remembered as dying young.
Harlow and lombard. . .fortunate man.
In one movie Powell had funny cigarettes 😂😂😂
Jewel Robbery w Kay Francis & William Powell the funny cigarettes. Very funny
I saw that movie too😂😂😂
William Powell complete gentleman
he used her
Aww, poor Jean. Had such a sad and short life.
Nothing says rebel like playing a game of golf. 😃
21:18. 18-23 Compare these 2 guys, jeez, its the same guy!
William Powell behaved like a cad with Harlow. She was too good for him. He is crying so hard out of guilt.
I actually worked back stage in a London theator
William Powell was a "paragon", not "paradigm" [of the urban, suave and courteous American gentleman ...] Geez, people. If you're going to use a big word, use the correct big word.
Missing much ..but on the whole it was pretty good 😊..
this is why we have wicked hunter
Harlow and Powell ? It would never have lasted.
why?
I think it would have. Jean was very different to Carole.
34:50. Wow! Im a golf instructor and she has a nice swing! A few things to work on but she had to have been an avid golfer, very impressive!
Plays or Broadway really keep you in touch with audience's...as you learn trade...but Camara also has trickes
Did Powell know she was pregnant with his child if he did he should have married her dissapointed if did know?
he didn't know
I read he didn't know at the time...
David Stenn. I read his book. I wonder if he is doing any other work these days?
@@joelyallen7999Yes it was
@@lizdouglas1952 If you look at photos of Jean in the months prior to her death she looked horrible - bloated and sick. Her kidneys were already failing.
My great aunts who were R.N.s (since deceased) always swore they knew this was actually a botched abortion. Not making this political. They did not have the antibiotics back then.
That makes sense. Quite a scandal. It would’ve been covered up and blamed on kidney disease.
Jean Harlow seems like "a regular girl" who had a Hollywood Makeover. (But why did they shave her eyebrows and make those lines??? In spite of it, she seemed to maintain a genuine beauty.)
(She didn't have some of the attributes that the Movie moguls usually require for the "Starlet Role"). She seemed to have a very Authentic Nature, and apparently was very well loved by peers and fans.
But if William Powell loved her, she had to be special. He's my favorite male actor of the 20th Century, (my favorite females are Carole Lombard and Irene Dunne.)
William Powell had that "Stinker-Sparkle" in his eye and I adore his works.
🥲❤❤true love does exist, beautiful memories
Beautiful You Are Love And Miss Beautiful Angel Died To Soon Baby Jean H
Did they do an autopsy of Jean Harlow , 26 years old , what happened to her ? What caused it ? Thank you
Kidney disease.
@@ninagill1407 I thought maybe it was a UTI that went to her Kidney’s . A big lost
Duh?
En español?
How sad ... how sad ...
