it struck me very quickly how much all these boys look similar, and how much they look very like Steven himself. Something very strange was going on in his mind. It was like killing himself through other people.

Yes, for me, an indication of my psychological maturation was that I realized I had no reason to fear ghosts, aka dead people. It was the living ones who were the real villains of the piece.

I lived in Sunderland from 1989 to 1994, great town but I remember well these deaths, so many people were killed in just a few years, horrific.
I strongly disagree, I have met some of the kindest most caring empathetic people who have went through the most horrific suffering. It's only certain people that want to inflict violence to others if they've suffered.

i was fostered at 15 had social workers from a young age, i never turned out like my mom, i learnt how not to be a like mother.
It takes two factors. Genetic predisposition and environment. I heard it said best as: Genetics load the gun, but the environment fires it". Some people are born with less empathy but a caring environment keeps those impulses in check. People born without psycopathic tendencies or other mental problems will naturally be more resistant to environmental influence. But genetics and environment together will create the perfect storm.
At this point he had two choices, to follow his family in violence and harm...or get away from it. He took the wrong road, and his family screwed him.
There was an excellent point briefly mentioned about the dismissal of teen boys who are missing that results in not checking for sex crimes and assuming other deviant behavior which helps people get away with crimes against them. Very specific, but if they took ALL missing kids seriously it wouldn’t be as big of an issue.

It needs to be standard to check all missing person(s) from run away to prostitutes (might be harder to keep track of)
They can create a new section in the police department which handles minor missing cases, run away kids, to serious cases. At least it would help building up the evidence and clues which could prove to be crucial rather than say that person will come back/ or we can’t act unless a body is found
@@whitedragoness23 As much as I agree with you, a division like that would be constantly underfunded and overwhelmed. I'm not sure of the numbers but police probably get way too many missing cases to fully investigate each one with any kind of speed. I guess that work could be contracted out to another agency that specifically handles missing persons?
As for the OP in this thread, I definitely agree on that. It seems really strange how many kids go missing and aside from a small local effort, not enough resources are put into the case. Horrible stuff.
If we look into Marc Dutroux, we understand fully why missing children is not taken seriously.

lyndsey kelly seems like a truly wonderful person, I cant imagine the struggle they dealt with but im so glad shes willing to help the general public and their curiosity with her interviews. I sincerely wish her the best

They'd have found out he was strangled. Idiots! And the UK prison sentences are a joke. "Three life sentences" will probably end up more like 12 years!

I used to work in a factory with an old fella who drove past one of the crime scenes in he’s van and was a suspect by the police they harassed him untill they found the real killer! Tony was a top bloke glad he didn’t get a false murder charge.
It's so annoying when in trail or investigating, if the methods of killing were different then they can't convict. It's absurd to think a serial killer would only kill the same way Everytime. A serial killer could kill differently every time and that should be obvious.

Well yes but it’s difficult to piece together that way like @moi moi said. Also, I believe that a serial killer usually has a “trademark” so to speak. This is obvious if you look at cases like Jack the Ripper (knife wounds, removal of organs, targeting prostitutes), James Fairweather (stabbing out the eyes), or Jeffery Dahmer (drugging victims, dissolving flesh with acid). It’s a psychological phenomenon which I can’t remember the name of but it’s how serial killers are tracked, usually. It gives the detectives a starting point which lets them find evidence, in theory of course.

It would be good to know what happened in that gap and what he was up to, if he murdered anyone else during that period.
Thomas Kelly had such a sweet face. The whole case was such a tragedy, worsened by the fact that the police really dropped the ball. Shameful.
The police interviewed the murderer in connection with each of the murders, but never made charges after doing so. Also, the pathologists overlooked some evidence on the - admittedly - charred bodies of the victims. This case reminds me a bit about Peter Sutcliffe‘s (the Yorkshire Ripper) who was also on the police‘s radar several times before he was caught and charged.
I have a great ammount of empathy for the poor 14 year old schoolboy............At the age of 14 (with the stepmother from hell) I ran away from home I was very naive and was hitchiking from leeds to colechester to go to my auntie.At a place called haverhill I was given a lift by a gentleman in a morris minor.After a while in a small country lane he reached into the glovebox took out a penknife put it to my throat and told me to take my trousers down.........Well I had no comprehension of peadophiles, child murderers so I had no idea of what danger I was in.So I started to cry crockodile tears Then he got a little more aggressive and I started to cry for real..........He then said GET OUT so I opened the door and got out and asked for my rucksack.He got out and opened the boot and threw the rucksack at me and drove off.I wandered down the lane and saw a light at a junction there was a car showroom/garrage.I stood there for a while and a police car pulled up and asked me what I was doing .I said I was on my way to see my auntie.They took me to the police station and bought me fish and chips phoned my aunt who later collected me.What I have to say is I never told the police my aunt or my father ...I think it might have been his first time and I was bloody lucky. I am sure he might have tried again.Why did I not say anything? I felt ashamed and did not think that I would be believed.

I've seen a few of these documentaries now, and noticed Dr Elizabeth Yardley always says the same things in all of them; It was about power, it was about control, it was all about them etc.
Maybe all serial killers are the same, but I feel she could have varied the script a bit!
You know, even if she wants to, if the Producers want her to say the same thing in every episode, then that is what she has to say.

Every time these people do a disturbing murder, which is pretty often if you watch a lot of true crime, they get excused or blame it on some oppression.
Could it be that they are just more likely to be a weird killer and that's why the were historically shunned?
There are so many comments hear saying they should stop ‘excusing’ the behaviour but they’re not excusing or rationalising it, they’re EXPLAINING why he ended up becoming a serial killer.

@@sharonletchford9375 in the UK? Because it very rarely happens there. Was watching a different episode of this program and Geoffrey Wansell (old dude, red frame specs and bowtie) said that currently there were maybe 60 criminals serving a true "life sentence " in all of the UK.

Agree. I had a horrific childhood with abuse in ways a normal person can't imagine...I became a nurse. My thoughts were I could use my experiences and pain to emphasize and heal others as I healed myself.
Noones saying that as an excuse. Its a reason. There is no nature OR nuture. There has to be the right combination of bad childhood and born without coping skills to overcome adversity. Only by finding the real reasons why these perps turn out this way can we ever hope to prevent them from being created in the first place

Police will cop out of an investigation at any chance. Believe me I know. My young son was killed it was obvious to us. Two years on there unprofessional behaviour is unbelievable. And through this terrible nightmare I have met many other mums and dads that are going through the pain of police neglect and laziness, and total unprofessional conduct.

My opinion is that there is nothing to cause a person to do this other than they just think that they are above the law. This young man got away with so much and nobody wanted to call him into question. He was gay, yet nobody saw these sex crimes simply because the victims were not female. This is just sad.

I think she's right about him just wanting to get back into the spotlight. I met a couple guys who were murderers when I went to prison and they LOVED telling the stories of how they killed their victims. I gotta admit, one had a great story of killing a pimp in a boredom alley that was hilarious. They like the attention.

This makes me furious! The cops made it possible to kill people who would have otherwise been alive had he been picked up! They didn't value these boys because they were working class!
You are so wrong and uninformed. You probably weren't alive for the Hindley/Brady murders but every person involved was working class. It changed the way children were allowed to play, Britain wasn't used to serial murders until that terrible episode. Most police are working class or close. They don't want children or any person murdered. The perpetrator should always do natural life to protect the public from them. With the marvel of DNA the police have a headstart on a crime that never would have been solved in so many cases. I think different branches of the police now work together instead of being in competition.

He was known in the area and people saw him with David. The police found his footprint and finger prints at the scene.
