I must thank you for this video! Your Fish Finder-12volt Portable Power Box video, inspired me and got me on the right track when building my own. The one I built is essential on every kayaking trip I do, always has my GPS, cellphone and GoPro batteries charged and ready to go! Thank you once again!
This is absolutely brilliant. Looking into an Elite-4x HDI for my kayak and wondering just how to power it. Very clean and very neat. I was gonna go with a single 12V battery but you've convinced me that it might be worth going with two. I paddle a Jackson Big Tuna so the extra weight is no problem.
Still looks like the best battery box build on UA-cam...or for sale really. Yes, now the Cellblok is available but I have a Hook9. I would rather buy yours. Good basic info in your video too, as I do forget things now and again. Thank you Sir.
Your set-up is about as "clean" and "smart" as I've ever seen. I'm done looking for a portable power solution for a small, on-board live bait tank. I plan on replicating your design on my yak. Thanks for sharing!
this is exactly the build I was looking for, I think the only thing I'll change is to put the fishfinder mount on top of the box because I fish from am inflatable paddleboard and need things to be mostly self-contained. Excellent work, sir!
Great job. Picking up my wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 on the 15th and now I know what my first mod will be, I have been thinking of something like this. Thanks for saving me the brain Drain...
One thing to note is that if you were to use a charger above 8 amps the way that you have it set-up would not be a balance load, meaning that the nominal charge would be too much to go from one battery to another. To make it balance, the charger would have to be connected to the positive of one battery and the negative of the other battery while keeping the batteries in parallel. I think what you have done is fantastic. Thank you
Very nice set up and very well explained. Will do this set up on my Yak.Will run a fish finder, trolling motor and nav lights.Thank you for making this video.
Great video! This is pretty much what I'm looking to build. One thing that I'd add is that you should not charge the batteries with the lid closed. Even though they are sealed batteries, they can still give off some gas. There's a warning right on the batteries. Thanks again for the video!
Thanks for this video... Great source of insight as I gather my build ideas! You should list the parts as that would be a HUGE help for sourcing materials. I appreciate your time making this video (four years ago now)!
Great set up. You gave me alot of ideas for my build. I love how you added the cigerette lighter plug for your phone. My wife always gets a little mad when I dont answer the phone due to the battery going dead. Again you did an amazing job.
Elegant design. Well thought out solution to kayak power. I will definitely source this idea as I build my own. just have sonar and red LED lights (to preserve night vision) so I don't need 2 7AH+ batteries, just one. Maybe, I just upgraded (ordered not installed) to a Humminbird 5 with DS and SI sonar + GPS and I expect the current draw is a lot more and I might need two batteries after all.
JimmyRay, sweet setup Brother . As well I've been looking for a detailed how-to on this to do myself . Thank you for posting . All the best to you on , as well off the water .
@Peter Laurence, I used the 3 wire plug and socket because it was readily available at sporting goods store, and I also use a small trolling motor from time to time that plugs into the same twist lock socket. You can get the boxes at Walmart. Actually I believe they are ammo boxes
@whitter... The second battery is connected with "double" Spade clips and then soldered. You can get them at most any electrical or car parts store. They will have a female end, and a male end together on same clip.
that is very cool I have to say I wonder if you put the power ports on back on the vertical if you would have left enough room to put a 3 battery in. nice job putting it all together a very clean end product.
Hi, great vid! Im also a nube to the yak world and im going to try and build something very similar to your box, i already picked up 3 12v>5.5ah to run trolling motor and f/f and a cig lighter. I hope it works as well as yours! Thanks for the vid.
Please show a close up and more explanation of how you put two leads on battery two. Those terminal clips are tiny. Also please show where the charging pigtail attaches. Does it bypass the fuse? What if you wire your trickle charger to the cigarette outlet and just plug it in there? Awesome build!
He did show the wiring, then he went on to explain how the outlets were linked. The "hot lead" was the constant lead to the fish finder, which connects to the "cigarette port", which then connects to the "3 prong twist lock" outlet. (positive to positive & negatives to negatives.) The line then runs to the battery with the in-line 12 amp fuse. In the video, he charged the batteries using the 3 prong twist lock outlet, but I'm pretty confident you should be able to use the other two outlet as well. Although it's not original, these type of battery configurations are done on boats all the time, but I completely agree, it's a very clean professional-like solution worthy praises.
@ Sonny, it is a 30 lb Minn Kota. It will last for about 1.5 hr on the little batteries in this box. I mainly use it just for pond fishing, use my regular deep cycle for day trips. Thanks
@ nr3r... Thank you again for your posts, I do agree with you somewhat. Just had a stroke at a very young age of 42. So won't be able to reply a whole bunch.
hey jimmy I have read that when you wire your batteries that you take the plus off of one battery and then use the negative off the other battery for equal draw or charging off both batteries.
can't find any of those at academy. So i'm making it of a old pelican case i have but where did you get those terminals for the battery's. a true how to would be great.. great setup tight lines
This is by far one of the better box I have seen on UA-cam and have inspired me to make one Like yours! I'm having trouble finding that charger is there anyway you can help me with that? Thank you in advance
Netos Trucking It Thank you for checking it out! I got the charger from a local electrical/electronics supply here in Hattiesburg MS. It is called N&H electronics 800-264-8808 | 601-582-5571. I will get the model of the charger that I got, and post on here for you
Netos Trucking It Ok, sorry for the delay. The charger I went with is a TDC power, Mod. BCA-66-121500. It is 12v and 1.5 amps. The amperage is a little low on the output side of this charger (for 2 batteries) but it was cheaper, and I don't mind if it takes a little longer to charge. Don't use it everyday. It will completely charge those (2) batteries in about 1.5 days. But u can get a faster charge rate. Just tell them at N&H what u have, and they will help you decide.
The terminals on the batteries themselves are spade clips, available at auto parts store. The "Marinco" 12v socket, and The "Marinco" 12/24 volt Twist Lock Trolling Motor plug/socket came from Academy Sports
Absolutely brilliant! Would you consider making this to sell as a complete unit? If so, time and material plus shipping and handling, how much will it cost?
+edawolf3000 From the prices he mentioned and the quality of the plugs $100 would be a steal and that is with very little labor cost and he could get more and it would be a Great deal. My electrical expertise stops at sticking a light plug in the wall so for me whatever he charged would be Outstanding! And I am not on commission either! LOL!
Jimmy, Can you do this with 16 guage wires and fuse wires? Also, are you charging through the trolling plug and drawing power from the same outlet with the same black red polarization? great idea!
Just found your video. Looked around at batteries and noted that some come with chargers. Wondering why you chose a different route? Availability at the time? Thanks.
Hey great video. I'm trying to duplicate something like this for my kayak. I did have one question tho. If you hooked the charger up to a cigarette lighter instead of the three pronged plug. Would you be able to charge and plug in ur fish finder with the one cig port? Like just have one plug for both input and output or would this require different wiring?
Hey Jimmy! Great build. I had visioned this and then checked UA-cam and saw your video. I guess I'm the only one that needs to know what size box you purchased. I went to Academy and they have two sizes in orange. The batteries I chose on Amazon won't fit the smaller box and yet the larger box looks taller than yours. Can you tell me which box you purchased?
Victoria Olsgard Hey Victoria, I am so sorry...I have been painting my house..hate it, anyway, the box is (the bottom portion, not the lid) is 12" long, 6" wide, and 6" deep.. The whole thing with lid closed is about 8" tall. Again sorry
how much would it be for the box without batteries or charger, prewired for one battery connection? I have the same battery that you have just one. im very interested in getting a box like this and would rather have it done right.
Good video! I am actually looking to build something like this in order to carry my Humminbird 688 around. Do you know how long the two batteries in serie last without a recharge?
Nicolas Brousseau Yes and No...I have used mine for 3 straight days without recharging, and did not have an issue. Dont really know how much longer it would have went, but I did not have any trouble. The only thing I do differntly now....is I charge this battery box with my standard "full size" Schumacher battery charger, set to 2 amps. I dont think I was ever getting a full charge before using that little wall charger.
jimmyrayblues one of the best battery boxes I've seen. Very smart set up man! I do have a question though. What would happen if the hot wire got water on it?
Hello Jimmy Ray, wondering how long this battery set-up actually runs. Running time for running just your locator is how many hours. Wondering because I am going to build either one or two of these depending on your answer. I need it to last a week without being able to recharge the batteries. If I ran this unit for 10 hours a day would it really last 5 days? Sounds to good to be true. Thanks in advance for your answer.
