A good man will move heaven and earth to get at those who hurt his woman. The Gatlin Boys got smoked thinking Tommy was a coward and wouldn't avenge Becky.

The writer/s made us see the scene as the song played out - that is excellent storytelling and Kenny Rogers was such a great interpreter of this type of song. Great reaction.

One of the best songs ever written -- musically, apart from the story. Can't get enough of it. Great reaction. Appreciated your comments.

The song brings tears to my eyes because that's what my father told me it's not to try it again to fights if I can help it if somebody hurts me once and then I explained to them not to do it and they don't care then I would fight because I'm defending myself but most of my life I've been very Meek and mild-mannered until one day when I was living and I was at school this one boy that in the very beginning of elementary school would pick on me and hurt me just because I was there finally got me frustrated and I punched him in the stomach and he went down to the ground and I let him have it with my voice and told him not to bother me anymore because he's been doing that for 15 years until I did that and then on top of that he ran after me and he pushed me down to the ground when I didn't expect them to and I had a lunch box in my hand and it broke into pieces as well as a thermos that had glass in it so explain it to my mother when I got home and then she found his mother which she knew and we went to his house my mother and I and he had to apologize to me and he had to pay for my lunch box and thermos which cost quite a bit of money back in the seventies so he also got a I guess a big spanking by his father when he was told when he got home what happened I moved shortly after that so I didn't see him after that ever again I know he's still around but I would like to apologize to him because I did punch him and I wouldn't expect apologies back to me but it would be nice because we're both adults now and I have nothing against him anymore

Here's the thing that some people don't realize about walking away from a fight. When you walk away from a fight you are in a perfect position for the other party to kiss your ass.
Don't get me wrong. There are times when you have to fight just like Tommy said.

"When his daddy died in prison" wasn't just him expiring from sickness or age. He knew it was coming and was allowed to see his kid first. He was executed. Tommy's dad was a killer, and "promise me son, not to do the things I done" isn't just "Don't lose your temper and fight."
And I don't think Tommy just beat up the guys in the bar at the end, either.

A movie of the same, starring Kenny Rogers, was made in 1983. The story was set during WW2. Before I discovered that, I would have guessed that the story was set during the Wild West.
Everyone considered Tommy the coward of the country. But when someone in Tommy's like was attacked - Tommy's girl friend, Becky -, that was the turning point that lead Tommy to prove the county wrong.
