It makes a certain amount of sense, really; he was deeply attached to his mother and to Padme, and it was always kind of shown that what Anakin really craved beyond all else were family bonds. You can tell if you watch Return of the Jedi closely. "It's too late for me son". Vader wanted Luke to kill him and then kill the emperor. The emperor is a megalomaniac who thinks he's one with the dark side so he thinks luke killing him would be ultimate victory.
