- The bow of the narrowboat needed some attention as it had become rusty. In this episode I show you how I dealt with the rust and also give you a preview of the new boat colour when I paint the bow.

Very nice looking job, Anna. And Kath doing stellar duty on the camera. It's all about team work.
Thank you
a little tip I learnt from my husband and it works if mild rust use lemon juice as it eats rust leave or couple mins then wipe off with a damp cloth.
Thanks
Oh, and bow looks sharp!
Safety glasses ladies, safety glasses. Thanks for the videos and hope spring is treating you kindly!
Yup, that's what my wife and I both said too. Yes, you need to ensure that you don't breathe in the rust particles. You don't particularly want them in your cornea either!
Maybe we're a bit funny about that because we're normally painting wood, not metal. At least with metal, you could use a magnet to "encourage" it out of the eye. With wood splinters, you can't.
Beautiful blue!! 👌👍👍
Very impressive work.
Top job! Best colour 👭😉🛥
That looks fantastic! The painting looks so professional. Alice and Munchy are so cute the way they miaow back at you when you talk to them ❤️ x
They are very cute.
Wow, you’re very busy at the moment. The bow looks great. Thanks for a great video.
It really brightens up the boat.
I am looking forward to more painting videos!
Great I have a few more.
What a beautiful spot to do the sanding, prep and painting in. It looks great already! Love how the cats kept an eye on you!
Supervisors. Lol
Oh all have plenty of well intentioned advice but.....no offers oh help! Glad you are pleased with result and confident of further success. Noticed Ewart was coming up for a ‘spit and polish’ Felines had plenty of constructive comments too!
Lol. Indeed.
To help protect the bow floor, have you thought about getting a couple of rubber outdoor door mats? These have holes in them so rain water would escape but would give you a good solid nonslip surface to walk about on. And any mud or whatever that got trapped in the holes can be removed by a good shake of the mats on the towpath.
It’s a good thought. I have t fully decided if I should sand the bow it use the mats.
well done agreed safety glasses
A smashing good job i must say! Spring is definitely in the air and that means cleaning out the winter blues and bring on the AWESOME BLUES
I wish I had thought of that. Excellent. 💙
Impressed! This is what is called a thorough Spring cleaning:) well done !
Thank you.
Glad the cats were there to help. It's very shiney. I do like the blue.
Looks really great! I have been painting my house but got shut down by Winter so your video was a reminder that I need to get back on it. Here are my two tips. First always wear safety glasses when doing any job that involves pieces of metal hitting one another at high speed. Second, painting and restoration is a slippery slope it starts with "I'm just going to do this" and ends up with a full restoration. Be safe and have fun.
Yes. Spring has arrived.
Oh Kath! How could you let that happen? That Anna ruins her bursa in her knees by not using knee pads is one thing. But it is unforgivable that she doesn't wear protective goggles while working with the rotating grinding brush. What a carelessness! Are you something like the mistresses of narrowboating, and then such a negligent behavior. Anne sit down! Write twenty times: I must wear protective goggles!
For rust removal, I recommend a small flex machine with flap grinding wheels.
And another tip for the paint tray: I always pull a plastic bag over the tray. Then I don't have to clean the paint from it afterwards. This saves a lot of thinner/brush cleaner. You just pull the bag on the left side and you can put it in the garbage without any problems. I also dispose of the paint rolls with this bag instead of cleaning them. This protects the environment more than having to dispose of the contaminated cleaning liquid afterwards.

Fantastic job Anna Marie, very well done.
good job
You have done a great job, very thorough and it looks good.
Thank you.
Never run the risk of rust in your eyes! Goggles or glasses! Xxx
Hi guys
Nice job well done but always remember safety first
One thing y'all may wanna try is to coat the foot areas with some spray on adhesive, wait for it to get tacky, sprinkle sand on where you used the spray adhesive, once that is all dry, go back over with a coat of paint, it'll help you with the traction, especially when you he soles of your shoes are wet or when it's been wet outside.
We are going to use dry sand and paint. But thanks for the tip.
Like the color!. It pops. I liked the shiny but understand it Could be a bit much. And safety is paramount. Thx for sharing
Nice job Anna! We have to do our well deck and repaint the boat too so watching with avid interest! 😉 Love the blue.
It’s a lot of fun actually. You just have to be methodical and in no rush.
A job well done !
Great job remember to keep you safety glasses on
Well done - looks grand and now you can celebrate with a veggie burger (!!) Love the fact that you are doing it all yourselves too x
Yes. Feel very accomplished.
Nice color choice. Looks quite good.
Well done. ALL the best.
Well Anna, you are the right person for the job,Best of luck with it l know it will look great xx
Thank you. I’m really enjoying it.
Awsome job.. Very good in painting Anna, not only in canvass and paper. And Kath is a good watcher.. Lol.. Cheers
Lol. Kath is a good looker.
Well done Anna. Top job. I know where to go if I want my bow scraped..... And as always, a well produced vlog. As long as you vixens give, us mere mortals shall enjoy. x
Thank you as always.
Took the words right out of my mouth. Also consider wearing knee protection for comfort and improved working stability.
Great looking work. Im so glad you are doing so many jobs yourselves.
Very rewarding lm sure
and so much cheaper.
Cheers Andy in Sydney. 🛳🛳🛳
It is very rewarding and fun.
The blue is very nice!
Wonderful! I learn so much from you. Thank you.
Thank you. Glad you found it informative
Very nice paint job there Anna. Looks like you're parked up in a nice spot too where a day or so of R & R would make for a pleasant break from painting and sanding.
Rust removal is very satisfying
Great Vlog, Loved the narration, got a 5 or 6 of your vids to binge watch, been a bit busy lately ❤️
Thanks. I worked hard in my narration.
A bloody good job mate, be sure to keep us informed regards how it progresses, thanks.
Biggest thanks.
HI If you are going to do the wood work may I suggest that you use SADOLIN it comes in different colours and you can always give it a light rub down and add another coat .In my opinion it is better than Varnish as you have to remove ALL the old Varnish otherwise it looks rubbish also very time consuming. Cheers .
Good job Anna, boats take a lot of LTC . And who else could paint a boat but you ( love your art work)can't wait for your next vid.
So kind of you to say.
Think safety, good job it looks a lot better. You get a 🏅
Take a bow! That seems an elegant sort of undercoat colour, it hides the fact that you're a lot of sanding and brushing away from finished if you take a break for a day or three.
Yes. It really does.
It may be summer heat causing expansion, but does your boat look a lot bigger to you than it did a week ago?@@TheNarrowboatExperience
Allow me to say “Bow-Wow” !
She’s pretty
You've done a really great job & well worth the effort. Congrats !!
Thanks 😀
nice rust treatment.
Hi girls Love your channels, both your art and on this one very inspiring, yes I agree about about safety I might not have a narrowboat But a land rover eats the stuff, good luck with the chase as thats what it becomes a rust chase, the pins I ordered arrived on Saturday :)
Oh yes- the rust chase.
Good Job👍
A 100mm wire cup brush would work better than the flat disc brush. And you should wear safety glasses. And high-density foam ear plugs. (Sorry. seeing someone using hand tools makes the Workplace Health & Safety officer in me twitch.)
What he said!
Rust converter? Will have to go look it up, is an unfamiliar term to me.
Well, if the government says that's what it is, then it must be that, "A rust converter is a chemical treatment that turns iron oxide into a more stable form such as iron tannate. The advantage of a rust converter is the treatment is less invasive and the only surface treatment needed is a cleaning of loose rust and soiling generally with a wire brush. Rust converters have wide stretching usage in conservation, they are used from the stabilization of iron based museum artifacts and collections to iron architectural elements and outdoor sculpture."

Great research. Thanks for sharing.
Hi ladies. There is a lot of people on the forums and social media that prattle on about you having to take the boat back to bare metal to achieve a "proper" result. This is simply untrue, if your paintwork is solid even though faded removing layers of it to reapply one or two coats is detrimental. Sure, take care of rust spots and sand for a key but that's all thats required. Top job well done.
Yes I agree. The temptation once you start is there though.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience 100 percent. I shared your sense of happiness with the results also. After mine was finished I had to keep going outside just to admire the new look... Its a great sense of achievement eh?
I think you would be much happier with rubber mats rather than the sand. Much easier to keep clean, just a shake out , sweep up and your done. Just a suggestion, but it’s your boat and you need to do what makes you happy 😃. Best of luck to you and looking forward to the rest of the painting. ( I do like the suggestion that you put some of your art work on the side of the boat 👍 ).
Thanks for the tip
Those wire brushes on the drill can throw a wire and it could go in your eye. Please wear safety glasses.
Hi to you both, You are doing a great job Anna its going to look really smart love the colour is it going to be the whole boat paint job if so one of your paintings on the side would look great thanks for sharing xx
Thanks. Yes the whole boat is going to be blue. Good idea about my paintings.
"Smoko" - I had to look that one up. Kath is a smoker - Oh noes!
No, neither of us smoke. It’s just Australian for tea break!
Hiya. Looking at the side of Ewart, I suddenly had the impression I'd missed several vids. I haven't, have I? Are you doing a total repaint? And by yourself/selves? Wow! I couldn't. I am in awe of you 2 - always have been. Can't wait for further updates. All the best to you.
We are repainting the whole boat yes. This is the first vlog about painting so you haven’t missed anything.
Look up power file. Brilliant for doing this kind of work. Or use an angle grinder with a flap wheel.
Anna Anna!! when using a wire brush, especially a drill driven one you should always ALWAYS wear goggles. The wire bristles can fly off and if you got one in those beautiful eyes of yours it would hurt. OUCH!!!
Hi girls. Have to agree with the safety goggles comments. 🥽
But I’m sure after all your hard work you deserved a burger 🍔 and pint 🍺. 👍😁
Nice job - have you ever thought that the outside of a narrowboat is really just one big canvass so when can we expect to see some of your artwork on the boat ?
It’s a great idea. I wonder what paints I need though.
The Narrowboat Experience - I stand to be corrected but I think enamel paints are used by narrowboat sign writers
you need to look into POR15 I use it
10/10
Have you tried applying Kill rust to it far easier
No I haven’t.
You should get yourself a battery powered needle gun much easier to take rust off
A lovely colour and we saw the various primer patches down the length. Will Ewart remain the name of your boat, or is there another change on the horizon? BTW, I will add to the nag on safety glasses and foam ear plugs along with the face mask for rust removal.
We might change the name.
"My narrowboat"? Where's Kath? Hope you haven't thrown her overboard😞
Kath filmed this episode so wasn’t really on camera much. Sorry.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience That's a relief!😊
for anti-slip you could also use a self-adhesive grip pad thingy like :
www.safetybuyer.com/black-anti-slip-self-adhesive-stair-tread-cleats-150mm-x-610mm.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIu6rd5P2r4QIVr53tCh03ZApQEAYYBCABEgJes_D_BwE
(I have never used these pads or this supplier - just did a quick google).
I used something similar but much more expensive on a project many years ago.
Thanks. I was thinking about these or using sand.
Rust never sleeps. What would you do without feline supervision? It would be a shambles!😺
Exactly.
Nice one Anna. I guess Kath does 'the engine room' and you do decoration/protection? I've used Hammerite paints for years and never heard of .......what you said! I'm wondering if that ought to be the stuff for my 'Project Series One Land Rover'?
The number 1 rust beater. Yes, it’s not actually in their website- funny.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience Thanks. I'll get my sleuthing hat on.
IS that an integral water tank? If so do you have any issues with it?
Looks great. But you need to wear safety glasses.
Love how the feline crewmembers had plenty to say on the subject but not a lot of paws-on assistance. :) ... probably a good thing on second thought. Did you end up getting any paw-prints preserved for posterity?
Only a partial on the cat flap.
nailer gun pneumatic or electric - that virtually shot blasts to bare metal - what we used in Merchant Navy
Interesting. Thanks.
Brilliant work ,that will save you lots of money ,are you doing the whole boat ,it very much looks like it .xx
Yes we are. It’s going to look great. We are very excited.
I think the real question here is: how blue did the cats' paws/bum get?
Minimum actually.
Do you know anything about the name "Ewart"? My parents lived next to a couple of that name when I was in Highschool in California.
No. We don’t know who or why she was named Ewart.
Oooo...wet paint....pussy cat paw marks as they inspect everything....and prints as they scamper back inside.....last time I painted my veranda ...kitchen floor never recovered.
Cats have been quite good and seem to view wet paint as something to be avoided- luckily.
Sand ???? The edge? What's that please. Been looking back at your videos.
glamorous life of living on a boat looks good i got a 35ft boat that needs painting you want to help
I am loving the painting.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience i hate painting so i am doing the inside first haha
This the type of thing I am referring to as in needle gun this is an attachment you can fit to a battery powered drill
ua-cam.com/video/LfZOTcsjUkE/v-deo.html
Safety Glasses, I had the tiniest flake of rust get in my eye, it was extremely iritating so I had to get my eye examined. The doctor literally flipped my eyelid backwards in a device and using a magnifier to spot and removed the flake, please wear safety glasses!
Rust removal? Naval Jelly. Not navel...Naval.
Nice! What’s with the lamebrains who thumb down? Maybe they need to get a life or join the Church Of What’s Happening Now!👍✌️😊🙏🏼
Lol. Church of what’s happening now.
You eould have been better off using a Cup type wire brush, Just an obsevation..
Surely you can't "Kill" rust as its not alive.
Rust is a pretty amazing thing.
Eh?
you can't kill @@TheNarrowboatExperience
:)
Girls girls do you value your eyesight ? If you don’t , carry on as you are !! Do as everybody else has advised PLEASE PLEASE wear safety glasses your eyesight is valuable s/glasses cost a couple of quid .get a pair on me Kind regards Terence Hammond
Thanks for the donation. We will be sure to make sure we wear safety glasses for any future work like this.
All the women I know would trick a guy into doing it for them...
I’m sad to say you might know the wrong type of women. 🤭
