I have absolutely no idea why I find your videos so entertaining and interesting. I don't own a narrowboat, or a boat of any kind, and I live in the US. Still, I enjoy them and they make me think of the day when I MIGHT move to England and buy a narrowboat and I'll be very well prepared. P.S. Get hold of an IKEAcarry bag--waterproof, and big enough to hide the pee container from passing strollers. ;-)

Just watched the vlog when you clear out the kitchen and look at the use by dates. on Ewart. Inspired to clear out mine. Got rid of quite a few spices.. ..use by date of 2013 on one of them. Now making flapjacks with left over oats that were close to use by .

Very interesting video girls. I've been living on my cruiser for 5 months and built my very own "dry" composting toilet for less than £50 and scrap wood found in skips. My boat, when purchased had a pump out style and was the first to go during renovation.
I use the ash from my wood burner which eliminates the smell. In summer I use sawdust. It's much easier being a fella as I simply pee into a 5L bottle and I carry 4 containers with me, so I can store my No1's and empty as required. I also use a diluted amount as fertiliser for my herbs.
I will only ever use this style of toilet on any future boats. Means I don't "have" to continuously find elsan points or carry cassettes everywhere I travel. Without a doubt, the dry composting toilet is the best solution (for me anyway). Thanks for sharing. AB

If I could take water straight for the canal, I could continuous cruise non-stop, without having to worry about water points or elsan, only rubbish and petrol, which for me is a small bag of plastic
your easy going presentation is so good I cant fail to watch.
This summer I swapped from the porta-potti to my own self built "composting" loo. Best decision ever, before swapping I could get whiffs of blue all the time, since swapping not a single smell. However, the best bit is definitely the improved emptying process; with the porta-potti cassette (same as your former one) it was a quite revolting exercise having to empty, rinse and repeat half a dozen times, now emptying the liquids is simple pour, rinse and leave and for solids double bag and find a bin.
In building it I splashed out and got a commercial separator (seconds) and large 10L liquids tank from Strumpet & Trollope, but the solids container is just a square bin from Ikea and I ended up with double the hardwood ply I needed and double the exterior wood stain. B&Q cut the 18mm ply to the exact sizes I needed so all I needed to do was screw everything together. The hardest part was getting a fan installed and venting out the window. Even with splashing out on the separator and large liquids tank in total I spent about £150 and about 6 hours time (including going to B&Q) in so about the same as 2 small cheap porta-pottis.

Don’t have a boat anymore and I live in the USA. Humans have such a hard time talking about a perfect natural part of your daily lives. Yes we all wee and do number 2. You did a fine job about taking care of waist. That would be the hardest thing for most people to make the change to boat living. For all our life’s it’s a flush and gone. On a boat you besides using the toilet you have to think every day “ Do I have to empty the dodo box” that’s very new for new boater to have to stop and think about that process when before hit the handle and it gone. Composting sound like the best. My boats had a grinder and a tank. In the ocean you can overboard dump in dock you call the pump. But it is well sealed and never a smelly. But when the grinder brakes down ohhh boy are you in for a treat.

Brilliant vlog ladies, I live in a static caravan whislt building my house and I have a home made composting toilet, the number 1's go into a large funnel and I am lucky compared to you as it is plumbed straight to a soakaway dug outside, the number 2's go into a large tub which originaly had bird fat balls in it, this is lined with a compostable bag and I just sprinkle the additions with sawdust, when full I take it outside and transfer it to my large compost bin where the worms can get busy, this has worked realy well for me for 4 years now, the biggest drawback is visitors feel very awkward about using it, I think it is because there is no flush and people ar sqeamish about seeing their own poo ha ha

Thanks for your thoughts, not been on board long enough to really make a decision on whether to change ... I'm on my own so my Thetford cassette is sufficient for my needs at the moment... I have got to a couple of locations where I saw Elsan disposal in notes but there wasn't one so that hasn't helped but I have reached one in time regardless, and if duck hatch is facing the bank that helps as the access point is almost opposite so no walking through the boat with it...
Yup tea will do it!! Can't live without tea though!!
Interesting......really. I remember using a bucket with 30 other men that needed to empty every 12 hrs. Mostly because of D&V. That wasn't a pleasurable experience, particularly due to the environment; the smell! I'm going to be using cassettes because most of the time I'm on my own and will use trees, bushes as well as taking the opportunity to the Supermarket, McDs etc. Enjoying the vlogs.
I have never been on a narrow boat and don't have a composting toilet but that video was riveting.It was also hilarious, how could you both keep a straight face I was in stitches.P.S would have a problem like you as I drink to much tea as well.thanx and happy cruising.
I haven't got a narrowboat, but I have got a caravan with a cassette toilet, and they ARE bulky and awkward to empty! And most caravan site have chemical disposal points!
One, perhaps criticism (?) is that I wondered if you were going to give us a demonstration of clearing the toilet, and setting it up again.

I take you have no problem emptying the cat litter box but find emptying the human litter box a problem. I have a compost toilet, a 5 gal bucket, that gets emptied into a compost pile out behind the house a ways. In a couple of weeks it will be time to start a new compost pile and let the old one do it's thing. Which is turn the waste into compost dirt. In a year I will start the process all over again. Very nicely done video with plenty of into for all people not just narrow boaters. 👍 😎
I just watched this again and I need to add that I do have a camp style toilet, the cassette style, and have no real problem with it except for where to empty it. I can't just empty it in a compost pile as the waste needs to be mixed with your cover material right after using. That is one of the main reasons I switched to a compost toilet. That and that I will have some very nicely enriched soil in 14 to 16 months. Of course I need the soil as I live on land and plan on having a garden one day soon.
Now where are Alice and Munchy , I didn't see them during the video? Maybe they don't enjoy talking about toilets since they have a litter box and don't have to empty it. lol

I looked into composting toilets 20 years ago when I restored my cottage, ended up with a convention one with septic tank. Mainly due to the high cost. No UA-cam back then to find DIY ideas, I was still on slow dial up internet.... Wish I had one now, the Garden would love the compost...

I actually found that interesting, hasn't put me off living on a boat one day.
The worst thing about commercially available dry toilets is the price. I mean 1000 bucks for a piece of over engineered plastic is arguably crazy. The alternative to a commercial unit is obviously a diy build which is absolutely doable and very economical. The diy toilet is basically a plywood box (painted/clad or stained in some way), a normal toilet seat with maybe a lid, a urine diverting insert (there are various options for that - the Separett and the Kildwick to name two), a large bucket (maybe one which comes with a snap on lid), a plastic bottle of some kind with a lid and some time to figure it all out.
I build mine in the course of about a week but I wanted a toilet which served multiple functions apart from being a throne. I build mine with an extra lid to be able to use it as an Ottoman with removable cushion and as a result as a side table (for outdoor cooking or something like that)
My build set me back (including the urine diverting insert by Kildwick) about 180 Euro's.
Toilet seat (lid removed), lumber and plywood, hinges, a kitchen drawer style grip for the front of the unit, a toilet roll holder, a small pc fan, a floor drain for the van (I use the toilet in) to draw away any very slight smells through the floor of the van, some 2 inch cushion foam and upholstery fabric, staples, screws, wood- and construction glues, 2 small caster wheels, some weatherstripping, a pvc plumbing piece (called a repair piece) and a stopper for the urine drain in the insert and of course the urine diverting itself.
And guess what: it works great and no regrets here as well. I was sick and tired of playing the role of retching richard every time I went to dump the cassette (which was always hard to find a location to do so and never at a time it was needed the most)
Try using the green rubble bags from Poundland. They are stronger and a better size for empting the solids in to.

I add a couple of spoonfuls of Bon Ami to the ones tank. It kills any smells and keeps the ones tank clean.

The joys of living on an NB.! Glad I don't. But I do enjoy your vlogs.
On the #1 side I use the small swimming pool chlorine tablets so it neutralizes the acid and the smell. You do have to be careful with the tablets and wear gloves when handling them but it makes the odor a non issue.

My niece & her husband installed an incinerator toilet in their tiny home. The expectation was odorless maintenance free use, but I understand the downside quickly came to light as the duration of the "incineration" process between uses. It was neither timely nor completely scentless. I did not inquire to whether it was the scent associated with heat or stench of product. And it did cost a bucket of money. Sounds like you have hit on the best solution.

I made my own composting toilet with a $1 Home Depot bucket some pool noodles for comfort with a toilet roll attached to the handle. $5 all in all for a toilet.

We have a drop through pump out and would not change. Yes there can be a smell The lovely lady at Midland Chandlers at Braunston recommended Odurless which is two bottles one we put in tank the other around the bowl and has a lovely bubble gum flavour we have replaced one bottle so far the other half full after 15 months it cost us about £20, as we are moored on the North Oxford (Dunchurch Poos Marina} when at one of our visits to the chandlery we thanked the lady as we are that pleased you can purchase separately if you just want to put around the bowl hope this helps.

1. What is "core." Is it the brick-like block that you show in the video?
2. Is you solid waste bagged for disposal or just tipped into an elan point? We are wondering if it's like disposing dog waste in a tie bag.
3. It's waterless, so do you have to clean every time you use it?
How specifically do you clean it?
4. Do you throw the toilet paper into the solid waste section?
5. When you empty the toilet, it looks like you're putting bagged compost.
I have actually been waiting for you to discuss your composting toilet for some time. Yes, really! :-) I am very interested in the dry toilet approach. I have several questions. Does the unit's fan run all the time (as recommended)? How does running a fan impact your battery life? Did you run a fan vent through the ceiling of your boat? What is core? May I suggest you see about getting a band that you can place around your holding unit. Put your bag on band the bag then dump. Should make the issue of accidental spillage while emptying go away.

i have a "cube" type in my camper van. not sure if a composter would fit, but would buy a ready to use if i thaught it would.
You would be best off building your own- check out Aussie Boater he lives in a small space too
I know Michael and Jo do use the canal side showers which would mean there probably using the bathrooms off the boat as well
Interestingly, I only use the showers, not the toilet facilities. I'd much prefer to use my own facilities on the boat than off it (except for showers!)

Oh I forgot to mention. Keep your eyes open for a no empty black tank system coming out. Was at an RV (recreational vehicle) convention. It is a black tank that incorporates the elements of an incinerator toilet.

That was useful. Is your toilet vented to the outside? I hated the cassette, when your onboard a lot you need lots of cassettes we used one a day! Maybe we also drink too much tea! Could you (if you have some tools, a piece of plywood, some paint and some appropriate hardware) make a plate to clip onto the toilet base which has a wooden collar with a groove in it) onto which you can very easily attach a garbage bag with a rubber band (made with the rubber of a bicycle inner tube) to prevent warm feet and the associated mess on the floor ??

yes, we get them online. The paper goes in a bin
We're a cassette boat. We changed from pump out when our pump out system holding tank spectacularly failed! We considered a compost but ruled it out as we knew we didn't have the space to compost so it would be a dry toilet and felt that double bagging the waste in plastic for disposal wasn't an environmentally friendly option. We obviously drink loads more than you as we empty out cassette every two days at least. We have one spare and an emergency back up portapotty that we maybe have to use once or twice every six month. We don't use chemicals at all and find the frequent emptying is the key to making sure there is no smell. That said, in really hot weather it can give off a smell. And you're right, boaters love nothing better than a chin wag about toilets!!!
Helen Tidy An excellent point about the "greenness" of composting toilets. So many proponents of them bang on about how they are the environmentally friendly option when in fact they are probably the least green option aboard a boat. The simple reason is that on land, the contents can be properly composted and utilised which is obviously the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of human waste. However, on a boat the waste has to be double bagged and deposited in bins which end up in landfill. The contents gradually decompose anaerobically producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. This includes not only the human waste but also large quantities of whatever compositing medium the owners have opted for. The plastic bags of course remain for a few hundred years... the greenest option on a boat is actually a cassette or pump out, provided no chemicals are used. Waste is flushed with surprisingly little water (unlike domestic toilets) and when eventually the tank is emptied it finds it way to a sewage treatment plant where it is either aerobically digested which is harmless, or digested anaerobically digested in big tanks producing methane as before- however, as this is happening under controlled conditions this methane is actually a desirable byproduct- it is pumped into the mains gas network for use heating homes and generating power, offsetting some natural gas consumption. The waste residue at the end of the process is used as fertiliser reducing the requirement for artificial fertilisers which are very energy hungry to produce.
We double bag once a month- and agree that composting would be more environmentally friendly.

Hey ladies. What about using either a supermarket bag for life or the ones from wilco are massive. They built well to. You loo would fit in them so you'd have no spills 😂
I lived a couple of years in Kenya, and near the end of my stay the latest technology for Pit Latrines was separating the urine. As when mixed with solid waste that's where most of the toilet smells come from. Is it not possible to put a plastic bag in the toilet to catch solid matter before you use it along with some composting material?

We where seriously thinking of a composting toilet before crick but got dazzled by the think thetford toilets on offer. One thing that put me off that you covered was the cost for what is basically 2 buckets and I wasent confident in building one. Bit wish we had got one instead of the casset.
I remember that. We kept our thetford in storage and put it back in when we sold Ewart, but have never regretted the composting route. Didn't you make your own sofa? You could do a composting toilet no problem

As we are having problems with our pumpout toilet on our boat we need something new or something else.
Would you recommend a composting toilet on a shared narrowboat? Some of us are 1 week, some 3 weeks and some are 6 weeks on board. It's a 6 berth narrowboat.

Great video, I have a natures head too and love it compared to my cassette, couple of questions, how much sugar do you put in to the 1s containers? I have also heard lemon juice is good, have you tried this? How many of the core packs do you put in, I find 1 doesn’t come up to the turner and that is with more water than suggested, I have put 2 in this time and that seems better, but I am worried I am putting too much in.
about five teaspoons of sugar. More is better in my opinion, but start with five and add more next time. I find similar with the coir- it's usually about one and a half.

It has a fan. We used to have it connected but haven’t used it for the last year and haven’t noticed any problems.
Why isn't your No. 1 outlet connected to a tank that also holds your grey water - and when the shower pump runs is dispersed into the canal? That seems like a solution to me?
I like the composting toilet only the number one's i don't like.
And the number one's container is to small and there should be a better way to empty the number one's container so you can't get annything on your hands.
What i also don't like about the number one's container is that everybody would know that is a number one's container if they would see you with that container in your hand.
It don't look like a fresh water jerrycan.
Also i would prefer the number 2 bucket to put a garbage bag in it bevore use.
I don't like getting it on the floor.

What's wrong with a septic tank system that can trickle into the cut ? as far as I'm aware, in effect having your own mini sewage works on board !

I have not lived in the UK for ten years so I am not up on the current regulations but i thought human waste was not permitted in dustbins, funny as dust was an old word to mean what we deposit in the toilet. I do plan on having a composting toilet in my next home.

MrG7swr aka Mike Well babies nappies end up in dustbins, responsible pet owners put their dog and cat waste in them, it would be odd to exclude waste from grown ups! Granted, it's not really an issue on land as most of us do the obvious and flush our personal waste but as far as I know there are no prohibitions. Remember the vast majority of bins are now emptied by machines rather than the bin man having to tip it out into a lorry or haul individual sacks out of it.
I like flushing my waste, knowing it's going to travel to the city reminding them im still a tax payer.

Could you not put a bin bag in the number two pot and then put your compost in it.. and then when it’s time to empty you just grab the corner together and lift out..... ol y asking.. maybe a idea for you both... rather than tipping your pot upside down in your bag and getting it over your toes.. like I said just a thought..
