Word. I have noticed in my own travel life that walkability is usually very attractive even if the person doesnt realize it.
The issue with any move to a different country of your own, it is that you have a mind full of ideas, customs, manners, traditions, etc.... and I find many immigrants that move to countries with vastly different cultures, struggle as they keep trying to impose or expect some of the values and patterns they are used to. For Americans, that have been sheltered and mostly isolated in their own bubble... this is quite difficult. Best advise I can give is to go there with an open and blank mind about what to expect. Accept things as they are and appreciate the beauty and when you encounter difficulty, learn from it and avoid it like the locals do.
You basically said be ready to accept wrongdoing because you're in a different country. NO. That's not how it works. Many Americans who move abroad know that the culture is and will be different and are open-minded. Smart movers actually long-visit first before moving to get the real feel. It doesn't matter what country you're in. NO ONE HAS TO ACCEPT WRONGDOING, CORRUPTION, OR UNETHICAL BEHAVIORS.

Yes, people should respect the beliefs and culture of the country they decide to be in or move to. However, corruption and unethical acts anywhere will NEVER be acceptable. That is the point I made and was clear on. At least have comprehension and context before responding or just say you're accepting of unethical and corrupt acts. Well maybe some foreigners might be frightened by the presence of the police in Rwanda but that's not the case for the locals. Our police is super friendly....in that particular footage you used, kids and adults were moving back because the police officer was ordering them to do so. Normally, when there are big events that attract big crowds in Rwanda, borders are set up to avoid crowds from blocking way for VIPs and other guests and the crowds are advised not to lean against the fences. The police officers are deployed to control the crowd and that's what was happening in that footage!!

I grew up in America and now live in Rwanda. Let me point out some difference between police there and here. Police in Rwanda walk a beat or stand post in a neighborhood so they are recognized and they recognize you unlike police in American cities who ride around in cars separated from the people they police. American police carry hand guns so are more likely to draw and shoot during interaction with the public. This makes every interaction potentially dangerous. Police in Rwanda carry long guns. There's actually less chance of getting shot by a long gun during an interaction. There's actually less intimidation and less danger with a Rwandan police officer. More importantly, Rwandan police understand the meaning of "protect and serve" unlike police in America. Finally, there is not a culture of fear between the police and general public that exists in America.

Did we watch the same video? Its clean, organised and seems to be advancing very quickly compared to other African countries. Not to mention low crime! This country is a breath of fresh air when you think about all the usual problems African countries seem to have. All it needs is business to flourish and it could easily build a first world society. Compare it to ultra corrupt Nigeria or the crime rates of south Africa and you'll know what I'm talking about.
