Hey Paul. Have you seen Trevor's new video over at Summit or Nothing??? VR using the 360!?!
It looks like someone might be sending scam messages with a number to text you supposedly
@@shawnr6117 I just got one saying to text what looks like an international number as I’ve been selected as one of a few winners…….. Very suspect?????
@@thisoldcottage Paul has a post about it I just hadn't seen it yet when I sent that one off
This is by far the Best video I’ve seen on these 2 brands. Very educational, well articulated and you answered all of my questions. Well done sir.
I struggled with my choice between these two stoves. I am a huge MSR fan, but I ended up buying the MiniMo. I liked the versatility and shape of the MiniMo. I have not had to cook real windy conditions. Both are great stoves! Thanks for a great video.
10:10 That is one of the problems. The prices are way to high. 65 pounds for a pan is insane.
Thing is with the jetboil and the pot adapter is that you don't have to use the jetboil brand pans or pots, you can use anything you want on it. Both have french press accessories (I have the jetboil one), the jetboil has a hanging accessory for the traditional narrow one.
You sir have a stove addiction!
And we love you for it 😁
Eh guys... 🙋🏻 Can we address the elephant in the room?
NO BUTTER ON THE BREAD 😲 This man is an animal! 😂
Good insight into these and more food for thought. I've never been one for taking something like a pan when on the hills but for a loch side camp they both look brilliant. I would have to go for the JetBoil pan though.
Great stuff as per usual 👍🏼
13:18 Thats an effrontery for this price. A piece of crap for about 50 pounds.
Thanks for the in-depth review, great stuff! I have been a long time Jetboil user but the performance of the MSR Reactor and WB are unequalled in windy conditions, they just wipe the floor with any other stove on the market. Most of my outdoor activities are in the mountains and, surprise surprise.. it's windy! MSR for me, it's a no brainer. The WB may fall behind the JB in certain aspects, but all of those disadvantages are outweighed by far when it comes to performance in harsh conditions, at least in my book. The ability for boiling water quick when other stoves barely heat it is a godsend in many circumstances. If it's family camping etc then that's a different story, I think it comes down to your intended use of the stove. Truth be said if I were family camping I would be using cheaper options than either of these.
I also use a Windburner and it is great not to deal with a windscreen for any kind no matter how the weather is outside. For melting snow in subzero temps... well... that's a whole different thing and I use an Primus Omnifuel with white gas for that!
Interestingly, my minimo pot support is super tight. Need 2 hands for sure to get it on the canister.
But most importantly, you've shown me how to viably carry eggs. Never thought of using a bottle lol!
LOL Same with the eggs. Great idea.
Good job. I already have the JetBoil, so it's nice to know I didn't go too wrong in choosing. But I did find the frying pan to be very tippy. One bump of the table and my dinner was all over the place.
UA-cam genius suffers for his subscribers. Thanks for taking one for the team, the egg and bacon butty must have a been a test :). Thanks and Stay Safe Sel
Just bought the Jetboil minimo this weekend from Go Outdoors £108 with their price match guarantee plus 10%
I've had a Jetboil for a few years now (the Sol in titanium). Absolutely great for winter day walking (when you need more than a flask) and for solo car camping when you're eating out during the day and just need the odd brew / breakfast.
Great comparison and not much between them in normal conditions.
I have just ordered a Jetboil skillet, having seen how it performs. 👍
Paul you absolute star !!! I have been miffed of with my jetboil since I bought it, as when I put the gas and stove inside vertically I couldn’t shut the lid, it never even occurred to me to put them sideways !!!!! Thank you 😊
Not sure you’d get the pot support thingy for the skillet in there too with the canister even if you turn on the side, but obvs really good if you’re not taking the skillet👍🏻
You can get it all in + a sponge. Just not sideways like that.
@@JackKlumpass The pot stand is really compact. Jetboils have a packing order for the components that ensures that everything gets stowed away. His point about the non-rattling is important.
@@jonmathias6159 thanks Jon, when I get a chance I’ll get mine out of storage and try, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t all go in - the burner + canister yes if sideways but not with the pot support too. I never really used mine much, not really a fan and mainly use alcohol burner set ups instead these days (speedster or trail designs). The only gas set-up I’m a fan of is the gsi pinnacle with a decent wind guard have that is firm but not too heavy. My Mini mo is too much of a weight penalty and too bulky for my liking.
Paul, thanks fore the way you compaired them👌
I love my Windburner but the lack of built in starter is a real shame considering the price.
Thanks for the comparison , seems like I want them both. Yourself, AB Camping and Corporals corner really help me out for my low budget choices. Thanks again to all.
Nice experiment Paul.
Very interesting results not alot in it. If I was to buy one it would be the Minimo because of the cooking and shape.
Atb Graham 👍
Great review Paul 👍
For all how good it is I would still know which to.choose though! Maybe a wind test and boiling water for a brew in the wind would be good
Paleo Hiker did wind tests with the MSR and other stoves. In the wind tests the MSR Wind Burner absolutely destroyed all competitors.
That’s why it’s far superior IMO, the wind.
Thanks for the review Paul. I have the Micromo which is a tall narrow Jetboil. I like it but it is a little sensitive to wind which always seems to be blowing in the foothills and mountains of Northern California where I go hiking and because of that have become more interested in the Windburner recently so appreciated your review.
Big fan from srilanka 🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I use the Minimo and it is amazing. Never had an issue in any weather.
good demonstration Paul, however, I'll stay with the Trangia, I'm never in a rush and I like the quiet fuel burner.
Trangia never fails to do the job to be fair.
I have a barely used Jetboil. Early model, no integrated lighter. It doesn't suit making meals so I take my Trangia gas system for multi day trips where actual cooking will be done. Sea kayak or car camping, so weight is no problem.
I use the Jetboil for hot water drinks when at the beach for a swim, but can just as easily carry a flask of boiled water. The two reviewed here will each do a job for backpacking but there are lighter options if just to boil water.
Great shoot-out! I was laughing when you were measuring the water you were putting in by looking at the pots, when there are markings on the nalgene bottle!
Was going so well and then you added brown source shocking 😂
I like the look of both stoves, I've had the minimo on my wishlist for a while , I'd probably just keep using my GSI pinnacle frying pan though with the minimo but them frying pans look good 🥓 🍳 👍
Just think Paul, Paster in under two mins. They're both quite too.
Interesting clash of the stoves. Film well done Paul. From Craig.
Thank you so much for this, Paul. I bought the Jetboil skillet last year and I love it. I think I'll pick up a Minimo to try out now.
I'm glad you've been absolutely clear how ketchup is not appropriate with bacon, egg and other breakfast sundries. Are you taking brown sauce in your ultra light camping setup though?!
With the windburner I've found tucking the top bit of the fabric handle into the hole below provides a slightly better grip!
You seem to be the only other person than me I've seen do that...it works a treat and makes a solid handle
Great tests. I’ve seen the boil times but it’s nice to see cooking compared. I am new to camping but have a jet boil that I’ve used before for day trips and now take with me. I don’t have a skillet but might be something to think about in the future when I get my ridiculous pack size down 🤣
This guys reviewing camp stoves but I’m just watching that breakfast sandwich
Great video Paul. I have the MSR but didn’t realise they made a frying pan for it. I love the MSR but for the price of the pan I can take Gordon Ramsey with me 😂. Be interesting to see what everyone else thinks about the MSR wind burner frying pan.
Great hack for holding the eggs Paul. You’ve saved my bacon next trip out.
Good side by side comparison Paul, interesting where the MSR fell down, I'd have thought they'd win this. Thanks!
Please be aware that an independent test reported that all the MSR radiant burners create massively more carbon monoxide than traditional stoves. It's genuinely dangerous to use them in an enclosed space like a zipped up tent. It's fine outside of course. Just be careful guys.
Do people really use these things? I do a lot of long distance backpacking and I rarely ever see one. Fry pans, what next, chairs? Lol
Just picked up the jetboil skillet for £19.99 on amazon 😁
So sad to see commercialism spoiling your videos. I never made it past that. No likey. No subscribo.
Not much in it, price or performance wise. But the main thing is.......you got a bacon and egg buttie out of it! ;-)
You've said "radiant heat burner" at 8:30 just to say it uses convection 6 seconds later at 8:36? :D:D What does "radiant burner" mean? ;P
Really informative video paul had to make a bacon n egg butty after watching it though
Have the windburner and used it for multiple camps. No issues whatsoever even for summit brews.
As for the rattle I just use an old sock to keep everything snug
Remind me not to accept a cup of tea from you lol
Definitely the jet boil for me paul , the skillet , the mini mo , and the colour 👍 cheers Paul nice one marra 😃🏕
As a novice I would say that the jet boil is a fair way ahead (except in windy conditions) especially if both are used with the MSR lowdown stand that you reviewed a few weeks ago. However, I've got to do more camping to be sure that I can justify (to myself) splashing out on what are both premium products.
Either way, I enjoyed hearing your comments.
The burning in the middle is more due to the burner than the pan I think. With the flame being so central, no matter what pan u put on the jetboil, it's still gonna burn in the center.
You need to get out more ha ha ha … that is said in a completely sarcastic manner ha ha ha .. good work Paul lad 🤙🏽
Windbunner is more likey a new version of MSR Reactor.
2:54 the wider pot allowes for better angle for utensils, like a spoon for a meal in the pot.
I have a hard time with no wind being used in this comparison. My understanding is the Windburners main strength is in wind and Minimos main weakness is in wind. Though clearly from this review in calm weather the minimo is better, but Im trying to see the difference in both types of weather
Good review. But use fresh eggs next time. They wont spread out.
I love your videos Paul, but…… brown sauce? Really? 😂
So essentially the Jetboil is lighter, cheaper, boils quicker, and cooks better on the cheaper skillet and is marginally less efficient (potentially).... Didn't expect that to be honest.
I was a little surprised. I so wanted the MSR with the skillet to be better. It's great in the wind though so 50/50 which I like best
@@PaulMessner Good stuff mate! I got a great deal on a minimo and had to snatch it up for 400 quid what a cracking steal.
Good review love the stoves. Optimus SVEA
Paul, What's your favourite type of stove.
Gas
Multi-fuel
Alcohol
Also could you do a video on how you make a simple Alcohol stove, that would be fun 👍
I have a video lined up for my favourite. here's the DIY stove I make though ua-cam.com/video/azWxhaIgrEE/v-deo.html
Thanks Paul
What kind of camera and equipment do you use to take movie?
Does the Jetboil pot support fit in the bag/can as well? I kind of prefer that design to be honest as there's no vendor lock-in, you pretty much have to use MSR pots and pans with it due to the design. Also (according to Jetboil!) their choice of a shorter pot is so that it's easier to eat out of.
You have to choose unfortunately to next the burner and gas together or the burner and support. If I'm taking the skillet, i store the gas separately so the pot support can get up to mischief if stored in my pack
Walmart sells one that cost half and puts out more BTUs.
great video sir. what kind of bacon that? looks nice
I appreciate your dedication to being thorough with your reviews.
It's all about the brown HP sauce !
Fantastic video! I’ve just ordered the mini-mo
Looked great on the picnic table, need to see you try these out when you are on a windy bluff in low rocks and scruff :)
I’ve done videos using both in wind and more extreme weather. It’s a bit harder to film this kind of video in those conditions though 👍🏻
You’re such a pro, so dedicated. The level of analysis ! 👊👊👊
Paul - I got an email saying to text a certain number in the message about winning the give away……..is that correct (or is it spam/scan my friend??) 👍🏼
Scam mate. Don’t text anything. I only contact winner via my paulmessner.com email.
So which one is your favourite?
Great video but those are frying pans. Every day of the week it's a frying pan. John Lewis call them frying pans, Tesco's call them frying pans. When in Rome, or Sheffield! Etc...
HOW DO YOU EDIT YOUR VIDEOS MATE?
Had one. Most dangerous piece of junk I’ve ever used to try and cook on. Unstable as all getout and damn near burned myself trying to keep it upright. Never again! I’ll build a fire first. Mine went directly to the garbage with a severe beating along the way. Those things should be outlawed!😡
Rant over. 🙂
Well I'll be the Black Sheep or the Odd Man Out in this video. I have absolutely no use for either. To heavy ( I go Ultra Light ) , to big ( takes to much room in the pack ). Most of all it's really loud and I don't want to carry empty gas containers. I'll stick with my Evernew Appalachian set ( 6.2 oz ) plus their non stick titanium pan ( 4.2 oz ) or my Firebox Nano Gen 2 ( 4 oz ) in Titanium. Cooking with a titanium , non stick , frying pan it requires a low heat & not a blast furnace.
Myself, I couldnt decide so I bought both. And more often than not I use the Jetboil. Its just that little bit more versatile and better thought out. And just as you said, where the MSR wipes the floor with the Jetboil is in the wind but in the end I couldnt stomach buying into the MSR only dedicated system.
Yes, I've had a Jetboil for years. It's really good at what it does. I always have it on winter day walks (flask is better in the summer) and with me on solo car camps (use a Trangia with gas burner when there are more people car camping).
Nice review Paul! Like the look of that jetboil skillet 😁 If I had to choose think I'd go with the jetboil stove too. ATB 👩&🐕
Ah it's for straining and drinking lol I thought for steam 😅 great comparison
I'm a newbie to this but they do seem a) to be over complicating stuff and, b) restricting you to their own products, I would like interchangeability.
Hi Paul the MSR you are testing is more like the jetboil flash 2.0 wouldn’t you say rather than the mini-mo, the flash cup does also have the measurement markings within the clear cup/base cover
Why are these so expensive? I genuinely cannot justify these type of price tags when cooking outdoors is so simple and cheap. I kinda feel like these limit your cooking ability while charging for the inconvenience.
I like the mini jetboil - mines to tall. Must let the hubby know my birthdays coming up soon😋. Cheers fella.
Ha ha, I've already got both, so it's too late for me. However, I tend to use the MSR for boiling water, and frying stuff in the skillet, whereas I use the Minimo for cooking food.
G’day Paul
Greetings from Oz. The weight you quoted for the gas, was it total canister weight or gas only
The pot support is needed to prevent you melting the plastic of the boiler......I just found this out the hard way at Silverstone!!
I've been considering a stove like this for a while. Considering the WB as I'm happy doing my cooking on my little old trusty Trangia. I liked your review style though, showing it in action is the best way. Yes there can be other factos, but most Tom's, Dick's and Harry's are going to do exactly what you've just done: Boil some water, cooking bacon and eggs. Well done sir.
No manufacturer has been able to sway me away from my Soto WindMaster. Sub £50 & works with any pot or pan.
The Windburner kind of sucks in this iteration. The group stove kits are so much more versatile, and you can still use the jetboil-style 1 and 2 person pots with it (from MSR, like the one you're using in this vid)
Taking the stove from canister mount to a remote canister option makes it much more stable, lower (which reduces wind disturbance), and allows for use on ground that's not flat, while barely increasing the weight. Also handy below freezing temps to be able to place the canister in water to stop the gas freezing.
Personally, I'd use the group/2 person Windburner stove, with the 1 person pot/kit you used in this video. But yea, their 1 person base stove sucks compared to their remote canister Windburners!
Hey Paul , will the pot /frying pan holder fit inside the minimo when its all packed up for transport . Thx
Great videos 👍
I bought the minimo for next summer's motorcycle travels.
Thanks for your honest reviews.
still no intention to try these systems, I don't know why.
fuel efficiency sounds good, but half meter tall stove somehow not what I prefer..
Hi Paul,
Didn’t see you put the skillet support in the Minimo with the gas canister ? I never seem to get it to fit with the burner and gas.
the minimo cup should be 1cm deeper in my opinion, what are your thoughts on this ?
ATB
Darren
Perhaps we seem to have a different idea of what compact means..I bought the Minimo and its the bulkiest stove I have, especially considering the adapter need to use a skillet does not fit inside when packing it away when the gas can is inside. I noticed you use the skillet but then pack away and skip the part of what to do with the adapter.
I can fit a small gas can and my Soto Amicus burner inside a Lixada 650 titanium pot, and no special adapter needed, no wind break need, and about half the size.
you the man... great review, If i were to use a skillet then the jet boil would be the one for me but since I dont fry food then the MSR wind burner i think is a better unit for 4 seasonal use, always great to see your reviews Paul. (the rattle test though for sure will need a protective sack inside the MSR)
For anyone on a budget I bought a 'Fast Boil' made by Highlander for about £50 - very much like the jetfoil and slightly longer boil time - but you could buy three of these for the price of the MSR.
Hi any chance you can do a side by side review of the buffalo jacket Vs Rab summit, thanks.
Good video. Pretty even although, in any type of wind, the MSR will dominate the Jet Boil.
Great video Paul. Would you mind doing a comparison of different brands of gas?
I use primarily Coleman Performance and Primus gas with no discernable difference. But during a recent DofE expedition I was leading they were given some cheap canisters for the Trangias and the performance was shocking.
Paul - would the Jetboil Flash not be the fairer comparator stove? Great video as always my friend 👍🏼🙂
Hi Paul really enjoy the content!
Would you consider a video on some kit to bring the family/dogs along? Now that it's summer..ish I want to take every one out for more than a night but still have decent kit. Either way thanks for the videos
Thanks for sharing - keep on fuelling your adventures 🔥
Hi Paul , On the Minimo what size gas canister will fit inside with the burner when it is all packed away ? Thank you
..cool video keep up the great content.. Thank you…
