MSR pocket rocket and a Toaks 650ml. Combo is more expensive than the OEX but packs down a LOT smaller and is quite a bit lighter.
Does the MSR burner fit the OEX cup? Best of both worlds?

Alpkit Brukit is very good and comes with a pan stand. Cost not much more than the OEX in the sale.
I've got the Firemaple equivalent. I don't think it's as windproof but it's still a good pot for me. I like the handle on the pot.
I know you said you were stopping doing reviews, but I for one am glad you've changed your mind.
My money's on the OEX.
There's not enough superiority in the MSR to justify the price difference.

Paper towels help with rattling and always handy. I always pack some paper towels inside my stove setup to avoid rattling, never regret
I had both until recently, I liked my oex but found it annoying to twist the cup on and off of the burner, mine always seemed to get stuck. I absolutely love my wind burner. However if I am camping and take proper food I still use my good old trangia, I don't think that will ever be bettered for me. If I am feeling lazy and take the dehydrated meals I just take the wind burner. I love the quiet and that's why the trangia wins every time

I've got the oex,can't fault it,why would you pay 100 more for something to do the same job,
I have the MSR Windburner and it is my favourite stove. One aspect you didn’t compare is how much gas it uses. I have found it to be the most economical of all my gas stoves. The only drawback is that bloody plastic cup which has twice jammed on the bottom and which took me ages to get off. The radiator burner is great for toast 😂
I have the msr windbunner and it's a great stove, also the msr gas can has marks on the side so when you float them in water it tells you how much gas you have left
For me it would be the OEX. Not just because it's less expensive but because it's not as tall so more stable. I still prefer my Soto Windmaster 4Flex.
Great vid as usual Paul but for me ( a sheffielder) £140 -----£ 170/ £180 to boil water which can in colder weather fail , Im sticking with my Trangia .£14 and guaranteed ...(generally) to work ....

I’ve an oex one and for going for a walk and boiling water for tea, soup etc it’s just the job. The MSL didn’t seem to have a lighter and I can’t think of spending £140 on basically a kettle.

Poor Jetboil. OEX seem to be copying everything. Love to know how their sleeping bags compare Paul, but i digress.
To answer the question, OEX seems to be the one. I have a Minimo and a Stash from Jetboil. Stash I think is not that good in comparison at all, takes ages in the wind. Minimo is brilliant but won't take a canister and is too big. You need to do a Jetboil, OEX comparison, although I think we know the answer. Great to see a REVIEW! haha.
I'll just stick with my boring old MSR Pocket Rocket and Pathfinder kit, thanks.

I have the OEX stove. The comparison is perfect imo. I will add the Jetboil support for the gas canister just about fits in the container with everything else (in the OEX). Make sure you look at voucher codes for online shops, might get a cheeky 10% off, can get the OEX for £38.
Personally I don't understand why people pay £100+ for what is a glorified kettle :')

None…….I’ve not gone down this route to be honest. I’ve stuck with my Toaks 750ml that fits my Coleman F1 (4800W) stove plus other bits inside. In winter I use the Goshawk Era burner.
I’m old fashioned 🙈 Just think these jet boil things are an overkill.
Two big issues i see with that type of stove, pot is too small to melt large amounts of snow in the winter also Gas canisters don't work that well when it gets very cold. I will stick with my 40 year old XGK for now. Roars like hell and flames 2 ft high when starting but works.
I got the OEX Heiro to replace my old Jetboil Zip. I found that I could easily adjust the valve to get a good simmer going... something that was almost impossible on the Jetboil zip.
My main reason for not wanting to spend a fortune on a stove again was that the pots don't seem to last (as in the non stick) after about a year... even if looking after them. Don't know if anyone else has found this also?

With my MSR Windburner I use a cheap alcohol stove cross pot support that perfectly sits above the burner to give sufficient clearance for use of a normal frying pan or larger pot

Great video and content. I already choose the MSR Windburner. It is in my daypack for when i go above timberline (~10,000' or greater). I too chose it because of the radiant heat system and it hasa safty shutdown system in case it overheats from too much use. That said i have never used the Oex. From what i seen in this video it is built a lot like the Jetboil. In which case i passed up my JetBoil because it seemed like it was proprietarly built around a MSR pock rock deluxe (which i also have). As a side note, both units boast about having a 10000 btu capacity. Thus making the MSR PocketRocket deluxe is lighter and more versatile system. Moving on, I appreciate all the work you have put into this. I hope my feedback helped.

I was out the other night, in storm Jocelyn and the Windburner was stable enough and lit first time, every time.
Great video Paul, I have had the alpkit BruKit for some years now, it comes with a pan stand so can use it for frying and the gas can stand too. I paid under £40 ( was in offer and some years ago) and it’s great.
I’ve got the Alpkit Brukit which is very similar and you also get the pan support with it. Excellent bit of kit

Both excellent stoves. But my go to is my Alpkit Brewkit, comes with a pot support too for your frying pan. My other favourite is my Primus Omnifuel, that will burn any gas or liquid fuel.
Have you tried the Firemaple Mars radiant stove against the wind burner? Would be a more comparable test i reckon as its the same radiant type of burner. Im not a lover of the height of the msr. Looks too unstable and would be nearer to the fly if using in the vestibule. You can also use any frying pan on the fire maple 👌
Thanks again for the oex stove comparison,I was probably one of your viewers who asked where it had gone. You can make a jet boil pan support fit the oex stove so you can use a frying pan etc. Just a little mod to move the ignitor spark away and away you go. Cheers Paul.
Having had a MSR petrol stove fail up me several times, and MSR tents leak and fail for friends, MSR would never make it to my list I'm afraid. Given a choice I'd go with a 'canister stove' which are more stable, lighter, work to lower temperatures and have less to go wrong in the field. I am very pleased with my Alpkit Koro and a Ti mug. Smaller, lighter, simpler, more versatile, more stable and on par with the cost of the OEX stove you had.
Bought the OEX last Summer. On the first trip the piezo ignition stopped working, when hot the pot wouldn’t detach easily, and part of the burner actually melted. Returned It and got an MSR pocket rocket 2.
Neither of the stoves. There big, bulky and heavy.
The taller they are makes is unsteady.
A very expensive way to boil some water.
I bought the OEX Paul from your last video with it, going against the zip. I can’t believe how good it is for the price. Especially in the wind. Pound for pound it’s a beast! I’m about to adapt the pot support from the jetboil. Thanks again. 😎🤙🏼
I've never been one to go with "knock-off" stoves, and especially those made in China. Hands down, the MSR would be my choice, as it's a tried and true design, and made to last a long time, with no problems, at all! I know that there are plenty of folks that prefer the cheapest stuff they can get, but I've learned to support the companies that have done their homework, and designed the best stoves, and I most certainly do not mind paying a premium for something that will be trouble-free, and last me far longer than most of the "Knock-off" stuff. 100% Reward the originators. They did the R&D and they actually have someplace you can call for warranty issues.
OEX isn't knock off, it's tried and tested by it's manufacturer Go Outdoors/Blacks.

Until your reply, to be honest, I'd never heard of this brand, nor the stove itself. I own over 600 different stoves, from all over the World, one of which dates back to 1866. But, OEX is new to me. AGain, glad you like it. But. I'll stick with MSR, as they seldom have any problems, and if they do, MSR takes care of it, straight away. Cheers!
I think the 'steam hole' is to accommodate the optional coffee press accessory, at least in the case of the Windburner. I'm unaware if OEX sell a coffee press for their stove, but if they don't then they probably included the hole in the lid to ensure that they have the option to do so without revising the product.
I just use a msr micro pocket rocket, I'd prefere the MSR product to be honest. However now I don't really cook on walks I'd rather a thermos and enjoy the quiet.
Given the price the OEX seems the winner. I like the idea of an enclosed fire, especially for in your tent vestibule.
I use a gas can tripod, a small MSR Pocket rocket 2 and an aluminum 550ml pot. Some alu foil as a windbreaker/flame enclosure for in the vestibule (although that stove burns very consistent, very reliable. And loud, honoring it's name).
Lovely review, very useful for folks like me. Don't let the tiny minority of pedants and keyboard warriors sway you from putting what you want on your channel. They are an unfortunate reality with UA-cam. Ignoring their shenanigans is far easier said than done, i'm sure but you know what you're doing ... and we love it. Keep on keeping on!

Had a MSR Reactor and like the wind burner it was a pain to light in wind, also there's a thermal fuse and if it fails then it's a return to MSR. OEX seems simpler, cheaper and boil time comparable.
Watched another channel and apparently putting a lid on slows down the boiling time which sounds counter intuitive !
It doesn't slow it in any condition. Basic physics...One channel run by a total idiot called Bex tried to prove this ridiculous theory, he kept removing the lid to look inside the pot therefore losing altering the heat & pressure contained under the lid.

Wind would’ve made it a real test. Otherwise it’s just a demo of each. MSR has virtually no change in boil times in very high winds.

This is not really a comparison. In fair weather, all stoves perform well. It’s called a WindBurner due to it’s superior performance in the wind. Nominally, it will take 5 g of fuel to boil 500 ml of water. In winds above 10 mph, it only consumes 6 g for the same amount of water. Unless you do a true apples to apples comparison, the review is flawed. My 2 cents.
Fascinating, thanks for this Paul. I've been looking at Jet Boil type stoves for ages as I still use old stoves I've had since the 1980s, a small Camping Gaz one and my beloved Trangia. Both are very old tech, and the gas stove has to be used in the tent porch if there is any wind, but they both still work, so why spend money on newer tech?
I love OEX gear, I have two of their tents and lots of clothing, all great, so I'm very tempted by their stove now too, but a lack of simmer is a pain.
Had the Hiero since it was released and it's brilliant.
Why buy the MSR at nearly 3 times the price?

I borrowed a friend's wind boiler when it first came out for my Pennine way trip (yes...I said wind BOILER...that's what it was originally called before jetboils legal team "politely requested" that msr refrain from using the term "boiler") it performed really well, especially in windy conditions, but isn't quite as efficient as my jetboils. I always use msr gas when I can, that extra 10 grammes of gas over jetboils is upto 4 extra brews in favourable conditions 😉
Just purchased the Firemaple mars radiant stove for £104 with delivery from China, got it delivered and tested it out. Great stove, must admit I don't like either these stoves (in the video), too top heavy for my liking!

Neither. I need more than just boiling water.Factoring in an accessory pan support, then perhaps. But then, I have a Gas Burner bought back in the 70's .. a 'Camping Gaz Bluet 206'. The gas cartridges are still available at my local supermarket and at 'cost per gram gas', cheaper than the rest. It does the job so .. probably not, I'll stick with what I have.
OEX for me if I had to get something like this .. much more affordable for similar performance.

I have the OEX for brews and the odd dehydrated pot noodle type lunch when out walking, and a Trangia Mini for some proper cooking when camping. I do feel the "big brands" take the mickey with their prices on everything from tents to stoves to clothing etc etc, but each to his own. My budget kit has not let me down yet and I have no plans to climb Everest anytime soon, or even go out camping when it's a bit chilly!
Windburner any day, every day. Jetboil, OEX, Primus Lite etc, don't really even come close in build quality or reliability. MSR's reactor though is also a phenomenal bit of kit and real windburner rival, situation depending.
The MSR burner, I find, burns through the gas much faster. I would rather use the OEX. Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

The Amazon link for the OEX Heiro Solo Camping Stove is not good - there is no availability.
The link for the MSR Windburner is to a page where there is no buying option; a waste of time. On Amazon, the Windburner is unavailable - just like the OEX Heiro Stove.
That said, prices:
- $42.70 for the OEX Heiro Solo Camping Stove;
- $190.81 for the MSR WindBurner Personal Stove System.
A better, real budget - also top-quality - solution is a Pinguin burner ($28).
Do you have any data on fuel efficiency for either stove? There's another channel that did such a test; several stoves and cups-to-skillets (no heat exchanger fittings), and with a low flame, just covering the bottom of the vessel used, got the fuel needed to boil down to about 5g. I think the OEX would meet this. The MSR ... I've read that the radiant burner is much more efficient, and also that it is only 6%-10% more efficient, so I have no good data. Do you have any data?
I purchased the OEX stove in April 2023, came to use it on the festival and the handle broke before I could fill with water. I really find the handle on the OEX is not stable and very flimsy on the handle. Maybe paying a little more I’m going to get better product.
The Pizzo on OEX, never mind the price, and I prefer the fold out handles - is a clear winner !
Had both and gave the MSR away, just couldn't get on with the handle!! I know it's a strange thing and probably only me, but it feels like a right faff to get a good, safe grip of 1/2 litre boiling water. No faults at all with the OEX and the price is excellent.
Must say, the OEX is a bargain m8. I'm considering getting one as a change or back up for my beloved Trangia stove.

Both look pretty good little stove systems, for a cheap clone the OEX looks very good. I'll stick with my primus lite+ though which is again pretty much the same as those 2 you reviewed except I can use it with frying pans ;) because it comes with three little screw in things to keep an ordinary pot/pan above the burner

IMO online reviewers really need to stop rewarding ripoff / knockoff off brands like this. Who is OEx? What have they done to innovate and introduce clever new products to market? Or is it merely they case that they've managed to steal a design concept and found a manufacturing source (almost certainly chinese) to copy a product design that is not theirs more cheaply? All you know is you are getting a discounted version of a stove system that was innovated by someone else who's design concept at best, and patents at worst, have been infringed upon by a no name, no real office of operations, no real outdoor industry experience knockoff brand. Probably made of that rare earth mineral chinesium too!
It would be useful to know how much gas stove uses to boil 1 liter of water. In what time. And how much does it weigh. I have another cheap stove FMS X1. It works, but needs protection from the wind.
Hi Paul, thanks for the comparison. I'm always in a quandary when looking for new kit as to whether to spend a bit more or go for mid-range, so these comparisons really help.
Something that I'd really like to see on your channel is some multi-day hikes / camping. I try to bike tour (ie panniers) when I can but hike camp videos are very useful still as you still can't take the kitchen sink with you, but I still think there are differences between over-night and multi-day trips.
As an absolute novice, the more standard burners seem more of an attractive choice because of the versatility. How do I fry my bacon with one of those? 😂
My mate got the MSR and when we go fishing on the beaches or rocks the wind is always constant and never stops on the coast and the MSR sucks for being able to light I swear it was faulty from day one and he nearly took it back but seeing others with them in the outdoors they are al the same! literally trying to light it with a match or normal lighter is impossible sometimes and we had to abandon a brew on the beach! I have the Jetboil Minimo and it lights so easy in the wind with the built in ignitor, never fails maybe two clicks at worse. even with a lighter or match you can light it way easier in the wind than the MSR. Having to buy an expensive and bulky lighter in order to light MSR Windburner is a PITA and it isn't even good for cooking on you need really expensive pots specific to the model to facilitate this and they are not that great either, Jetboils skillet frying pan beats the MSR pan too by a good margin.
The Jetboil Minimo you can use any old pot or pan from the kitchen with the supplied adaptor ring and its also got a micro regulator for cooking and simmering and for when the fuel can is low to maintain constant pressure. It is for me a true all in one with the built in lighter and the pot is much better and practical than the Windburner, shorter and wider with a much better handle, its also great on gas efficiency. The Windburner is faster to boil in very high winds and constant high breeze by a margin that is irrelevant to a 30 seconds faster cup of coffee! that is if you can get it to light LOL The Minimo beats the MSR hands down. If you are not going to buy the Minimo due to cost just get the OEX Paul just proved its just about equal at £110 cheaper. If you want to splash the cash get the Minimo the other Jetboils are so so and I'd even suspect the OEX is better than them for a lot less money if you don't need a bigger capacity pot which the jetboils have. I did tell my mate which to buy he bought the MSR to be different he said and also said he would swap it in a heart beat for the Minimo now after using them both for while.
After watching this I picked up the oex and it's got to be one of my favourite stoves now. It boils 300ml of water in 1m 30s. Incredible! Such good value. Why would you pay more?

MSR i ve used one for a few years now never failed , it would be great if you tried this in 10-15mph wind to see the results , and how much gas each one used for the same boil? , id guess the oex would just blow out ? , MSR's customer support is amazing for after care too even yrs down the line . oex looks canny im sure it will be a good stive . but not sure on their reliance ? or post purchase customer service . if not u tend to use meths and a stormin cone most of the time , takes me back too my first trangia days , SH Winter ML
Very informative video. I love money, so in Australia, we have access to the 'Fire Maple' brand which is similar to OEX. Plus I might only use mine once a year.
I can’t fault my jetboil 2.0. But I fancy the msr reactor 1.7l.
What would be really interesting is a comparison of gas use between the big name stoves to boil 100ml. Both at full pelt and at low flow. Fresh canisters for fairness and weigh them before and after.
For boiling water there's no way I'd spend over 50 quid on anything else.
The MSR is just too expensive for me so I have the OEX. The OEX pot stand does fit ....if you trim the feet a little bit!
I like my OEM. Used it a lot now too. If it’s broke at any time I can replace it for a few quid. Only use it to Boil water for a coffee or a freeze dried meal or fill a flask The pot isn’t big enough for a mega meal.
Rather clickbaity thumbnail caption - you obviously wanted people to think you were returning one of them to store and hoped people would watch to find out what was wrong with it.
I bought a OEX few years ago very happy with it but the egnighter stopped working after 18 months or so tho it’s still going good

Stick with the trangia, what's a few minutes on the boil time against versatility and especially stability. All these stove on canister systems look likely to fall over and spill boiling water.
Hi Paul unfortunately I'm not a lover of the jetboil style stoves especially for wild camping in a tent . I find them too high and unsteady .This makes it dangerous for getting too close to the flysheet in windy conditions . If I had to buy one it probably would be a jetboil as you can buy more accessories . sure the Msr / oex have better wind resistance but nothing a wind breaker couldn't solve . this review just proves that you don't need to buy the most expensive stove to get great results. as stoves they are all great. alittle bulky perhaps but still fantastic stoves 👍👍 choosing the right one comes down to price /weight/ size Usability ?
I have the Oex, the handles are very flimsy, one of mine is already dodgy when opening, it pops out of the retainer!
Do you think that the wind protection on the Oex could completely remove the need for a traditional stove windshield?
Great video, but after years of wild camping I prefer a homemade alcohol stove, gas is too noisy for me.
