  • In this video, I give an update on my yellow & red cherry guavas aka lemon & strawberry guavas (Psidium cattleianum). I also show my lemon guava cuttings I managed to root last year as well as my inground lemon guava. I also show a couple of other plants including my Psidium acutangulum and my Eugenia pyriformis seedlings.

Wow you've got a really substantial collection of cherry guavas now Peter, way more than i realised. Mine have been very poor this year , i can't see any fruit that look likely to mature. I fear they have all become rootbound as they look pretty unhealthy 🙄

Very healthy-looking Psidiums, Peter. By the way: keep an eye out out for the risk of ground/grass frost tonight. It won't be a severe frost, but tender plants, subtropicals with thin and 'papery' leaves, and developing flower buds may be susceptible. Citrus have waxy leaves and therefore are more resillient to very light frosts.

Even if it doesn’t freeze, it’s bitterly cold out there!!

Yeah, I was outside a little bit ago and it feels freezing already 🥶. Currently, we have clear skies and it's predicted to drop down to 3°C, although cloud cover is meant to arrive in the early hours of the morning, which might help prevent a ground frost 🤞

Your Strawberry / Lemon cherry guava plants look really nice, Peter. You have wonderful collection of this species. I love that you've propagated some through cuttings.
Today was my first try of either of the Psidium cattleianum variations. imo It's far superior to any other 'guava' I've tried. Incredibly delicious fruit.

Which variety, Dom? When one describes something as "Incredibly delicious", I must give it a try.
I can't wait to try a White Sapote fruit, but that won't be possible until I can get hold of a reliably-yielding grafted cultivar. If I can get hold of scions, I could try grafting onto my 'Mc Dud'.

@@MoebiusUK thanks, Dom! Yeah, they seem to be doing quite well at the moment. Yeah, it’s worth experimenting with rooted cuttings, I think about half of them took, so not the easiest, but not too bad either.
Oh yeah, I meant to add a bit in my comment on your video about that lemon cherry guava! I’ve heard the yellow ones are meant to be the tastiest. I’m hoping mine might flower earlier next year now some of them have started flowering 🤞

@@garycard1456 Cherry guavas are worth trying to grow. You won't find named varieties of them though, I don't think I've even come across a named one, but they seem to fruit quite quickly from seed. Also, they can be rooted from cutting as well which is nice.

Thanks for the video and also showing the pomegranate plants. I am interested in growing some so please can you advise if two varieties are required for pollination and if not which variety would you recommend

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Годину тому +1

Hey Trisha, I can't advise much with regards to the pomegranates as all of mine are still quite young and haven't flowered yet. With that being said, as far as I'm aware pomegranates tend to have both male and female flowers on the same plant so should be self-fertile with just one tree, but I'm sure a second one would help. Because my options are limited (very few pomegranate varieties are available in the UK at the moment) I just got all the varieties I could source. I think I have 5 named varieties now plus a couple of ornamental ones and seed-grown ones.

My 3 are still small as they are Jurassic.
Do you leave your plants outside or take in Peter?
You have a nice little collection going on there.
Only thing I am wondering is….. if we keep getting flower buds during autumn, how are we supposed to get fruits?

I will have to do some research on how we can manage this tree to fruit in UK. Where are you based and have you grown one?
