    I actually prefer the ICE 1/2/3 to the newer ones. The first versions feel much more spacious and that’s a luxury.
    The seats in the first class are in my opinion slippery and a tad uncomfortable. And I can never overlook the soiled carpets in DB trains. The SBB manages to keep it clean all the time.

    I think the ICE 2 trains are the most comfortable, and the ICE 4 is the worst in terms of comfort. I went Mannheim to Berlin in one of those ICE 4 trains in 1st class and it was just SO uncomfortable. I'm glad I only paid 63 Euros for my ticket from Paris to Berlin (including a 2-way regional train transfer between Mannheim and Heidelberg - where I'd stayed overnight to go to the very special Tuesday night at the Miramar Weinheim waterpark).

    Incredible how this level of high speed travel on such a nice train, even if it is not the newest model, is so cheap! From just 29 Euros for such a long trip is a steal! As a UK resident I am a bit jealous. We would pay about three times that much for a journey of similar length on a much slower and less luxurious train.

    • @NonstopEurotrip

    • @johannesschiele1513
      @johannesschiele1513 Рік тому

      to put it in perspective:
      If you book your tickets longer in advance (up to 6 months max.) you can get pretty cheap tickets, even in first class. But if you decide on the day or you have to take the train last minute it can get quite expensive. But I guess that relates to most means of fast transportation.
      Just as an example I booked a train ticket for my summer vacation from Würzburg to Munich and back for 17€ each in first class, so 34€ in total. It should be a ride about 2,5 hours and that's nearly unbeatable for my personal taste.
      Greetings from across the sea =)

What was called Berlin Hbf from 1987 to 1998 is now the Berlin Ostbahnhof. It was originally the main train station for East Berlin in the Communist era. If you noticed, this train actually went on to the Ostbahnhof, since there is no place to store out-of service trains at the Hbf.

    If this train can travel well over 200km/h, then I'm confused about the reason that it takes seven hours to complete the 700km journey! It averages to 100km/h which is not all that high speed for a high speed train. Perhaps, because this is not an express train and it takes plenty of time with the stops in between? And it doesn't hit those high speeds because there is no need with this particular run? Price is really good.

      @EnjoyFirefighting 2 роки тому +1

      @@ddandrews6472 on many runs the ICE doesn't serve the shortest route. Thus e.g. I remember going from Hamburg Central to Regensburg Central few years ago; I was ready a few hours earlier and simply hopped onto the next ICE heading south, but although it left an hour earlier than the ICE I originally planned to take, it would have arrived more than an hour later for going throughout the entire Ruhr metro area instead of going the shorter and quicker route further east.
      As you pointed out the number of stops in between play quite a role as well. Also depends on if the train runs on seperate high speed tracks or mixed service tracks; If they're unlucky to have a slower category train ahead which they might not be able to overtake it will go the same speed for quite a while

      Germany has some faster routes - for example the newly improved Munich-Berlin relation. Stuttgart-Cologne in 2h is also a good deal for over 350km. Nowhere near 1200km of course. Germanys geography and population density makes faster trains not very economically feasible. The first IC-Experimental went well over 400KpH back in the day in testing, though, so its not a lack of technical ability 😁

    I am just 16 years old, so I usually choose second class because of price Matters. I've already booked my next trip from Regensburg to Mainz and back, which is 4h drive one way, also with the ICE1 in Second class. I have booked one month before, so it has an one Way Price of 13,40€, which is a really good price i think

    Thanks to this video, I paused in the middle to spend an extra €10 on seats for my upcoming trip from Frankfurt Flughafen to Freiburg im Breisgau haha.
    Not sure if I’m on the ICE 1 or another model, but I am annoyed that the DB website didn’t show the direction of travel for the seat selection. I’d hate to end up riding backwards.

    Unfortunately the seats were "upgraded" to newer ones, so it's nit the original experience. The original seats were far more comfortable. Engineering may have improved but ergonomically design has been going backwards for decades. Making big comfy train seats as in the past seems a lost art in Germany.

      @@NonstopEurotrip Thanks Max. Perhaps one day food will be included in first class fares. I remember an overnight train journey here in the US that I took back in the late 50's that included meals(I was in first class in a roomette).

    • @mstrmren
      @mstrmren 2 роки тому

      First Class is a lot cheaper here. For example, a First Class Ticket on a 1h trip that would cost up to $300 in the US, might cost $20-$90 in Germany. DB loses millions of Euros every year with the payed Restaurants, and a free meal service on such low prices (in comparison to the US) is not profitable in any way.

      Aproaching and leaving ICEs to and from Frankfurt main station often collect delays because in this massive junction infrastructure is so overloaded that trains often have to wait until they can join the station and leave again. 10 minutes delay is a standard there.

    Bcs Frankfurt in such a big hub u get mostly delays like the 10 min in this area. But iam impressed for a ~800km long journey to be on time. I mean iam still okay with 10min delay after such a long distance. Even at some routes the train takes just the half time than the car and its funny if people complain the 20min delay. You can drive with ur car 3h more if u want XD

    Grüezi and thank you very much for your great and relaxingly balanced video. Us Germans are very quick to point out all the bad experiences that DB brings to their passengers. We take some things for granted though that are not basic, like smooth travel at 300 km/h and comfortable seating. A positive review of a long distance DB ICE trip is a welcome change! :) It made me subscribe to your channel.

With a little planning you can get decent prices for first class and enjoy the ride even more. Haven't visited him since they started running ICE4s on this line. Pandemic and stuff... :)

    I miss the compartments of the new(er) ICE versions, If I have the chance I still pick a seat in a compartment rather than in open space. I never had a bad experience in them and enjoy the privacy and it is usually more quiet as well (in my experience at least). I understand that they take up a lot of space in the train and that the DB and everyone else makes more money with getting as much people as possible into the trains, but I still miss compartments. Maybe it's my age and me being an introvert, but I always liked the compartments. Be it on the old regional trains in Germany or later in the ICE 1 and later areas, I also prefered the original seats in the old models. Anyway times change, but as someone who grew up in a small town and used trains every day to get to work in the next bigger city and in a family without car, public transport was always used, I just miss the old compartment trains and old ICE design and layout.

    Been on ICE1 only once and by accident (an IC I was on has run someone over - still not sure accident or suicide - and was held up, and after evacuation, endless waiting and a trip to nearest station on a bunch of random emergency vehicles the teain they got as substitiution was an ICE 1. Despite the fat I was travelling 2nd class before, I went straight for the seat in a 1st class compartment. As some of my co-,passengers went for a local train instead of waiting for replacment, and the train I was originally on was much shorter,I got the whole compartment for myself. It was a short trip though, I was going from Cologne to Koblentz and the whole incident happend between half and two-thirds of the way.
