      @tigerblue42 3 місяці тому +1

      @@megamikethemovieman I personally think it's the climate they are kept in. It's a bit like books (although obviously books are far more fragile) if you keep them in normal, used rooms on shelves then they can be A1 mint condition for your lifetime but if you keep them in a cardboard box in your garage, basement or loft (attic) then they're eventually going to succumb to the more variable moisture and temperature changes. Just my opinion though, I have no expert knowledge, it's just something I've never experienced. I can't honestly say that I've checked/played every single disk in my collection in the past five years for example (who does ?) all I can say is I've never experienced this issue and I have recently (and often) pulled out old CDs or DVDs from decades ago and never had any problems playing them. On the other hand I have pulled out some old books that had been put in my loft or garage and been completely aghast at how much they had deteoriated, whilst others that I've kept in "normal rooms" remain in the same condition that I bought them in so as I say, my best guess/experience is that people who complain about disk rot might not have taken the best care of their disk or perhaps have just been very unlucky with certain disks...I don't know for sure it's just not something I feel I have any need to worry about myself.

      @@megamikethemovieman keep them all in the original protective case is the most important thing you can do to protect them. The next thing is to have them in somewhat controlled room in terms of temperature if you feel it’s too hot or too cold for you its too cold or hot for the disc. Handle your disc correctly, never touched the part with of the DVD that is red by the laser. Absolutely never buff your DVD unless it becomes unreadable because when you do that, you remove the top protective layer which can cause cracks that air will get into and cause your disc not to work. When cleaning them use a good microfiber cloth and go from the middle of your desk to the outside do not clean in a circle. There are a few more things you can do, but those are a major ones that will keep your collection working fine for many years to come. Now don’t get me wrong nothing less forever and some people might encounter occasionally a problem or two but that’s usually because the desk was not handled properly or stored correctly.
