    Thank you Robin!! You explained in a short video, what many people couldn't explain clearly or show properly! I've come across others saying use a low AF focus but I could see how their photos weren't razor sharp, even though they were claiming their photos were "sharp". I will try those tips in my next images :) I bought you a coffee, enjoy! :)

    Thanks for this, Robin. I first watched this a few weeks ago after buying my M5 MkIII, and have been experimenting with these settings since then. Although very familiar with the aperture/shutter speed/ISO triangle (I used to be a keen OM1 photographer), the additional AF and other settings you recommend make a huge difference - which would have taken me a much longer time to discover by myself!

    I'm glad that something so simple like #1 move your focus point!....was part of this. I being pretty old school am so ridiculously guilty of not doing this anywhere NEAR enough and I pay for it sometimes.
    Focus recompose is so deeply part of my brain that even with all of the fantastic technology we have available these days in these camera bodies, I just never utilize the tools that are right in front of me. It's great to have those skills sure, but it can get you into trouble for sure, and the result when just using the tools how they're supposed to be used is just so much smarter haha.
    I'm still working on that, but keep reminding some of the more stubborn guys like me lol.

      No matter how good the composition, if it's not in focus it will never win a competition.......one of the first things competition judges look for......every time.

    • @AnastasTarpanov
      @AnastasTarpanov 2 роки тому

      @@gangleweed totally don't agree with that. It's not the most important thing. You can have a perfectly sharp photo, without a moment, story, composition, motion, emotion, etc. is pointless. And if you have watched some contest judging the photos are always shown in full size on screen, no pixel peeping, and they have like a second to choose, at least on the first round.

    • @gangleweed
      @gangleweed 2 роки тому

      @@AnastasTarpanov I would agree with your point of view, but at the same time if the photo lacks quality no matter what the subject portrays it will not impress the judges........images that are intentionally made "soft" are for a reason, and most portraits are in this category especially females and young children.....sharp lines in those photos win no points.
      Animal photos and close ups of insects and flowers MUST be razor sharp.

    In all fairness , not to get sharp images with the latest olympus ( OM system) cameras with built in stabilization and wonderful lenses could be hard to do . I use P program mode hand in hand with the cameras assessment, this allows for concentration on the subject and given a little few seconds can adjust speed or aperture on the fly . Pity to miss that shot because you were in some manual mode or confused on the spot . My valuable time I allow for subject assessment as priority , facial expressions , fleeting moments passing scenes . My ISO is on Auto up to a specified limit .
    I find I really like your advice , as either instructive or a reminder of what I think I know ( sometimes forgotten or overlooked )
    The camera has a good brain , but you can manipulate light and choice of focus .

    Thanks for the info. Some very useful tips indeed, especially the tip about the anti-shock setting.

    I have forgotten who wrote it, but I read somewhere that sharpness is akin to the alcohol content in a wine, without it, you will not get tipsy, but the quality of a wine is much more than its alcohol content, which lies in it's taste, aroma, and smoothness.
    Same can be said about a lens and its sharpness. There is more to a lens than its sharpness. How it renders colours? Highlight and shadow detail ? How does it perform in low light ? How does it render skin tones/ foliage / sky ? How does it separate foreground and background ?

    Hey Robin, you are one of the reasons I got convinced to Olympus camera and now a long time reader of you blog. There was a cheat sheet by you on your blog and was super helpful to get the out of box camera to the right settings. Since there are some new features in EM1 MkII and maybe X, have you consider to update the cheat sheet? Thanks!

      I don't think there are that many new things to add to the cheat sheet at the moment. There are new features of course, but those are only situational features, not activated or needed at all times. The cores are still applicable.

    Thanks Robin. I am a long-time Olympus user and still found this very useful.
    Interestingly on the EM1x I cannot get the diamond and the heart together as you did (one or the other I think) for shutter shock and silent shutter. only get the heart on the super menu

      I believe in the menu there is a section (can't remember where) that allows you to check or uncheck selections in the shutter options, you must have one unchecked. When I bought my E-M1X I remember the anit-shock option was unchecked where it wouldn't show up in the options.

      The menu now should be very similar to E-M1 Mark II after the firmware upgrade, and you need to dive in to enable it.

    I have multiple OMD bodies, the EM5 I have gone through 2 since it's release and an EM1 MII ... the noise filter is easy to figure out, Low = ISO 3200 ... Medium = ISO 6400 ... High = ISO 12800. This of course assumes you are shooting general images as JPEG and not RAW and don't want to do post, if shooting raw do whatever ISO you want because you can fix most of it in post and you wont have JPEG artifacts mucking up the grain but realistically you will still lose detail. Tip ... ISO 25600 is viable when used in black and white because there won't be any color noise, it will all be grain, just a lot of it.

      Everyone has different tolerance when it comes to ISO. I have friends who can't stand the noise at ISO400 and 800 and I can't even see any noise shot at such ISO numbers in my shots! I guess my point is, don't turn it to high, the noise filter smears more useful details, and it is not worth sacrificing that over noise.

    Robin, how about birds in flight shooting, do we have to turn off the noise filter and do it in post processing?
    Thank you for sharing your tips. Love it.
