uThermal, the fact sc2 spawned twitch which spawned esports is the most wild. The 2011 era of everything was crazy.
I thought esports was spawned when south korea had regular TV channels on Starcraft? It was/is a national sport there.
@@beaumose I think it's more accurate to say that SC2 spawned modern streaming. The idea of watching people play games live was pretty niche, and even in Korea it was, as you said, a TV thing.
Justin.tv and in turn Twitch were the first time we really saw constant live streaming of games, and at that time, it was SC2 that was driving the influx of viewers.
eSports evolved over time but I think the breakout titles were Brood War in Korea and around the same time, maybe slightly earlier, was Quake in Europe/USA. Though, there were niche "esports" before then, it was really those titles that launched the idea and it was the late 90s that competitive multiplayer, especially online, really took off.
sc2 is a legendary game, first esport to dance with the olympics. i think RTS is the genre of games that will be the first to be a olimpic sport. CS:S was viewed globally on tv, anyone with cable tv had counter strike in some channel playing. broodwar came in a cd in a cereal box (frosty bites for me) in Chile, they made the game big in south america by gifting it in cereal. i got 3 games out of cereal, brood war, microsoft had 2 games on kellogs chilean cereal, age of mithology and age 2
i know next to nothing about sc2 and even i can tell this is a seriously psycho opening

The Saudi government has been diversifying into every piece of entertainment, media, future tech, etc. that they can. Since their funding of the Saudi cup is negligible to their national fund, I wouldn't question it. Whatever attention they can gather is worth it according to their strategy.

Speaking of Starcraft esports dieing vs other games' esports it's worth pointing out that there aren't any esports teams in the other "more alive" scenes that are remotely profitable. It's could all fall over at any time
CS was definitely the first big e-sports in terms of defining it, though Quake Tournaments were a thing but it was niche. I think we also have to consider console competitions that were sometimes held (such as MK/SF).
Starcraft 2 is peak RTS
the biggest problem with eSports as a concept is the fact that fans are unwilling to spend money.
Challenge idea - no entering opponents main base (capped in time?)
I find ZvZ the most confusing, if there are two groups of zerglings I can barely tel what's going on 😅 TvT is my favourite mirror matchup

You´re not wrong about SC2 being close to death but you can still make an argument SC2 is still one of the biggest Blizzard eSports since all Blizz eSports died
