Really agree about not needing the academic language. Doesn’t need to be “flowery”. Authenticity is best!
Can’t agree with you more
no one:
me, a second year uni student in australia where personal statements aren't even a thing: just the video i needed thank you lydia
Personal statements aren’t a thing over there? Lucky! :)
Mary at least not in my state as far as i’m aware! all i had to do was give my top four preferences for courses across any of the unis, and then once i got my atar score (a number that shows how well we did in our last two years) we get accepted into whichever was highest on our list that we met requirements for :) wayyyy easier here luckily 😅
@@caitlinrose4445 u have tuition fees?
a azeem my three year degree will cost me about $33,000 aud but we have a thing called hecs that basically means we only start paying back our debt once we earn above a certain amount per year and it comes out of our pay check like tax does so we never actually ‘see’ the money
As a 27 year old who recently finished an MFA course, I'm not sure how useful this will be, but here's some of my advice - I previously commented on one of Lydia's videos and people seemed to appreciate my advice so...
1. I wrote my personal statement quite quickly at the start of year 13 (this was in 2010 I think?). I'm not saying that you should write yours quickly, but certainly a first draft... just get some words down and then work with what you have.
2. Definitely emphasise why you want to do this course. If you're struggling to put anything down, maybe it's a little sign you are not invested in what you may end up studying for a few years. Maybe start off with what appeals about the subject. I did Creative Writing, so I mentioned that I was interested in boosting my knowledge of poetry and discovering new writers and how they honed their craft. Try to be quite specific rather than broad. Also, like Lydia said, don't be arrogant, but show passion for the course.
3. Also big up the university. I'm sure it wouldn't harm to say something like 'the high student satisfaction percentage for this course is also appealing' or 'to be taught by professionals with vast expertise in (area you're most interested in)...'
4. Say how you see things after uni too - I said that it would be great to end up with a published book to my name or a poem in the New York Times. This also shows that you have aspirations to use your degree after it's over.
5. Any extracurricular activities you may have done that are relevant... mention them too. Any awards, high grades, work experience... throw it all in.
6. The personal statement IS important, but I think certainly more so if you are applying for a course that's very popular (in terms of subject, Law and the Sciences are always highly popular). Here I can only say that there needs to be a little something extra in your statement. Why should it be you doing this course? What can you bring to the table? What do you already know about this subject and what do you want to know going forwards? Who do you admire in this field?
7. Make sure you read through it before submission several times. Don't do what a friend of mine almost did and apply for Chemistry and in the final line put 'and that's why I want to study Dentistry.'
8. If it's anything like it was for me you'll only have 500 words, so get straight into it - no long intro (I'd say 70 words max). Cut out filler words like 'and' and 'the' if possible.
9. Let a teacher, not a friend, look over it to begin with. Sure, friends can see it, but a teacher may spot more errors.
10. The application process for Oxford and Cambridge is a bit different (of course)... my only advice here is just to be on the ball with things because it might get fiddly at times - keep all important information in a folder and always ask for support if needed.
whats it like studying creative writing
whats MFA
lol she put dentistry instead of chemistry
@@aazeem398 For me, the first year was going over stuff that you'd already be familiar with if you write regularly, but developing new skills too. It's a lot of analysis and constructive criticism and reading of other people's work. You must be prepared to read your work aloud and get feedback. It's enjoyable on the whole and you'll grow a huge amount as a writer.
@@ReeceChambers99 its a worthwhile degree
Lydia, this is super useful advice for anyone applying to university this September, especially the bit about getting a second opinion on your draft! For any Year 12s watching this who are starting the application process, I posted a video this week over on my channel about how to pick a university when you can't visit them which I think you might find helpful! :)
Omg living for the "you're doing amazing sweetie" shirt 💖
Have I already written my personal statement and submitted my UCAS application and received my offers and going to uni in September? YES! Am I still going to watch this video? YESSSSS♥️
This couldn't be better timed- I've just sat down to start my first draft! Thank you Lydia
Good luck!! X

Personal statements are actually the bane of my existence
It’ll be over before you know it! xx

Thank you so much, this week is where I've dedicated all my ucas planning. Since I'm aiming to do an Art and Design degree, I hope the process of a personal statement is not so hard

I didnt skip some ads💘
I'm from Argentina and we don't do these things, at least not in my university but here I am, watching this 😂💖

Omg this is PERFECT content!! Thank you!! 💕
you look so beautiful!
How did u do the intro to your personal statement
You're amazing
i really needed to watch this, it is genuinely so helpful🤍💘!! thank you
I wish I’d had this video when I wrote my UCAS 😅😂
good choices for unis especially birmingham and aston why u choose them
Idk if anyone will see this but I wrote mine last year and got 5 offers. My teacher didn’t like my introduction and wanted me to change it but I was really happy with it as really summed up what I wanted to say. So just know that you can take your teachers advice but you don’t always have to do what they say because at the end of the day, you know what you want in the statement and it will work out x
some people think that bcuz the teachers are more experienced they know how to write it better but its not a personal reflection on u
👏👏👏
should i write things the british way or the american way? for example, i play soccer but in the uk they call it football and for my major physical therapy, they call it physiotherapy
what do you recommend i do? thanks so much:)
Omg I’m applying to Leeds. I think I want is as my first choice, I want to do media and communications. Is it a nice uni?
Hey this is sort of a random question, but have you met any french international students ? Cause I’m in a british section in France so I’m applying to unis in the UK, but Leeds doesn’t have a french student page on their site :/
Hi , I am worried that I don't really have a theme for my law personal statement. Every paragraph is about a law-related activity and I linked them but there is not one general aspect that I talk about in all of them and I don't know if that is ok or not
heyyyy :)
I live in Ireland and I don't want to go to uni in Ireland I want to go to Scotland but with Brexit the fees might go up and I won't be able to afford it. I don't want to get my hopes up but I don't want to manifest it either with like Law of Attraction any advice??
Will Universities Care More About Covid 19 Experience In A Personal Statement For Applicants Applying For Fall 2021 Or Later.
I don't have anything to put on my statement, I had things planned this summer as I need to start writing it now. But I do not have any quality
Like I said, think outside the box! Think of things that you can do whilst at home that still show an interest, for example books, documentaries etc x
Hi this was very informative!it would mean a lot if you could read your personal statement out for your next video?
Hii, I repeated year 12 because I failed chemistry in the first year which made me realise medicine is not the career path for me . I’m currently going into year 13 with psychology, philosophy and french . In my personal statement should I mention that I repeated year 12 with different subjects ? Because I don’t think a lot of unis would be happy to hear it and they would be reluctant to give me a position in unis like UCL OR QUEEN MARY OR KINGS . What is your advice ? Because on the contrary it could show how I learn from my failures and I come back . But again I wouldn’t get any unconditional offers by saying I failed . Can you help me pls I want to study psychology
Could you talk about how you got corporate legal experience in Year 12/13??
It was through one of my dads contacts, so I was lucky in that sense x
How would you structure a personal statement in terms of writing one for two courses, currently have a mix of two courses that I want to apply to
Are they two completely different courses, or similar ones?
@@lydiavioleta_ I wouldn't say that they are exactly similar, its biomedical science and nursing, so both sciences but very different when it comes down to it
What do u do in afternoons during lockdown
watch her day in the life
8:46 beautiful hair
what if you really haven’t done any extra curricular activities outside of college?? 😫
#roadto300k
i’m in year 11 but i’m dreading writing my personal statement next year lmaoo
It’s really not that bad, don’t worry!! X
It’s so annoying with corona because I had so many work experience for the summer and now I can’t do it 🥴😭😭
What made you know you wanted to pick business management??
BAHA nevermind. Im watching your business management q&a🤣❤️❤️
Hello Lydia
I miss you
Am I the only one that doesn't have much work experience coz of the crisis
Honestly, in terms of work experience, it's the skills you developed from them which matter in a personal statement. So even if you don't have work experience, you can look at other things you've done that would have been just as beneficial to you as a person - even if they are seemingly small things
@@Priya-wz2sw thx could u give me like some examples of small things that they like
You should have a look at virtual work experience placements! I'm planning on starting one this week to explore different career paths.
@@taylorwilliams2788 also the unis will take into account the reasons as to why u dont have work experience
Tahzib Chowdhury Clubs you’re a part of at school (doesn’t have to be academic), any sort of leadership position you’ve held recently at school, mentoring/tutoring students, volunteering, online courses (check out future learn), DofE or NCS, any big presentations or public speaking you’ve done. Just make a list of everything you’ve done over sixth form that you’ve felt proud of or participated in and then note down all the skills you needed to complete those tasks
Hey comment section anyone here that is thinking about studying a-level chemistry or ud already studying it should really watch my recent video x
heyyyy :)
